Today I'm discussing how I chose Obstetrics and Gynecology as my field of choice in medical school and why I tried REALLY hard to talk myself out of it. If you're a medical student trying to pick a specialty, maybe this will help you. If you're a person outside of medicine I hope it gives you a little insight into why we do what we do - hint: it's not for the money or the great working hours.

My ob/gyn treats my grandma and my mom. She has treated my mom sense before I was born so when I walked into my first appointment for birth control for period cramps and a breast exam when I was 13 she greeted me as "hi, I'm wendy, I'm the one that watched you grow in your mom's womb. " then went on so say how old she feels treating 3 generation of women.

When I went for my first gyn exam it was the office of the doctor who cared for my mom when she was pregnant with me (he was away when I was born). The questionnaire asked if I had been seen in the office before. I wrote “only as a fetus”.

So true! I'm pregnant, and the nurse who taught out childbirth education class brought this up. She said in her experience, a lot of practitioners don't even think about this. They don't ask for consent before touching a patient. They don't ask, "May I examine you to see how dilated you are?" but rather they say, "I'm going to check you now." They don't consider that maybe a female practitioner would be a better fit for that patient. Etc Birth is scary, especially if you've had an epidural and you're lying there helpless. So much that happens then can be triggering.

@@sayhello5377 I was abused as a child and having my pelvic exams is always so difficult for me. I am pushing 50 and in all these years the only Dr I ever had that asked for consent every step of the way (Every. Single. One.) was a Dr at a Planned Parenthood. I could have cried from the respect and relief. I am usually depressed and shaken after my exam (ma'am, relax your legs, ma'am) but this Dr was so considerate after I had explained my predicament. I wish every Dr cared as much.

@@JustTheTruth-Please I have alot of anxiety over exams. In my case I needed a more direct doctor who would say "this is what I'm going to do" My Doctor, he was really patient and gentle though. I would love to see this too. I have some severe sexual traumas in my past and it’s so hard to go to OBGYN for me. I am too afraid to admit my past so I just avoid going for check ups as much as possible. When I got pregnant I was so afraid of all the exams we have in my country. And birth ... oh boy the idea of somebody even trying to tie my legs to something ( they do it here) I would have trashed the place in panic. So I ended up getting C-section even tho I wished for natural birth. Well I would love to hear what training doctors have dealing with survivors and how it is best to share that stuff without it being awkward and is it better?

I really love your videos on these topics. I’m currently just a hospital scheduler and the person processing doctor’s orders, but at one point I actually wanted to be a forensic examiner and toxicologist, which stemmed from wanting to be a surgeon but deciding that I didn’t have the heart to be the one to tell someone they had to die, thus I changed my field entirely to where the people I was working with was already dead ^^” it’s moments like these where I listen to experiences of doctors like you, that almost make me wish I had explored my mental health long before I did, because I possibly wouldn’t have scared myself out of the positions I once fell in love with if I did. I didn’t realize that my fear of giving people bad news, and then subsequent fears of chemical exposure and other maladies in toxicology, were mostly the result of my own head working against me. I wouldn’t realize that until I graduated college. Mind you, I still don’t regret my actions - I’ve studied in Japan, acquired honors in my field, established roots for writing a novel, taught students across the country, and I’m trying to pave the path to teach in Japan in a few years - but part of me wonders what it would have been like if I stuck to my guns through those fears. If I had just tried it, instead of letting myself duck out as soon as a stray thought occurred. I send you many kudos for working through it despite all of your fears and concerns, and coming out the other side with a degree and a specialization that you absolutely love :)

Thanks for sharing! I too was like you. In my early part of medical school I thought I would do peds because I love kids (so I thought, I just love my own kid, lol) but then I learned quickly that I hated the parents. I loved, loved, loved my ob rotation and too was discouraged about it being a specialty that doesn’t allow family balance but I trusted my gut and followed my heart and went for it. I also love “doing” things and working with my hands. I am not sure how you did it with having kids in residency but I had my son 4 years into private practice and once I had my son things changed. I wanted to be that mom who was able to pick up and drop off their kid at daycare and knew I was going to be able to do it and it wasn’t just a maybe depending on how things were at the hospital. I love the relationships with my patients, but I love my family more. I felt like I wasn’t being all I could be for my patients because I was rushing to go home and be with my family and I felt like I wasn’t being all I could be to my family because even though I was at home (and on call) my mind was on the patient at the hospital. I still love ob/gyn and I don’t regret my decision because I couldn’t imagine being anything else. I decided to quit private practice and as of March this year I am a Ob/Gyn Hospitalist. It is still fun and I can still be a great doctor even though I may only know the patient for a few days while they are in the hospital . But now I feel like I can be a great doctor to patients while I am a work and a great mom and wife to my family while I am at home and I am 100% present for both when I need to be.

He is the happiest kid I know, extremely intelligent, and very self efficient. The myth of mommy raising the little kids are long gone. Children need to be social, and learn how to take care of themselves from early on, to reach milestones and be effective adults. Us moms tend to baby children for as long as possible, cripling them for their adulthood. If we work, we can only baby them for 1 to 2 hours a day, and psycologicaly, that is more than enough emotional time a day a child needs from their parents.

@@andrakarsten226 no pne is judging you. It's like people who use baby formula getting SO angry at breast being best. No one is attacking you personally by stating an indisputable fact. It just is what it is. It's just true. That DOESN'T mean every single bottle baby will have a Neuro degenerative disease, due to lack of myelin, or poor eyesight and get diabetes. But it does cause those things in a large number of babies. And not being able to form a significant bond during infancy resulting in an inability to process emotions effectively and form adult attachments well is absolutely a problem in children passed off to daycares at an early age. That doesn't mean it will 100% be your story. Don't get angry at facts. Do what you can to mitigate damages in your specific circumstances. Sounds like you did what you could or thought was right at the time.

Listening to you talk about how unsure you were to follow ObGyn and do what you are passionate about is just incredible! I am currently going through something similar, in two months I will graduate (Electrical and Electronic Engineering) and I am doubting what to study in my master's degree ...when suddenly you said "you are right Keithy(Katy?), if you are watching this" . I fell like this is my wake up call to really study what I love and worry about the rest later, thank you so much! (btw I am 23 y/o and English is not my first language)

This video was really helpful. I'm almost on my last year of medical school and I really want to be an OBGYN but everyone is so discouraging about it (even most of the OBGYNs I've talked to at the hospital). So thank you for this, I really needed someone saying that you can be a OBGYN and still have a life and a family outside the hospital.

I hope that you followed your thoughts and your passions and that you ended up becoming an OBGYN! I'm about a month away from testing for my RN license and want to be a Labor & Delivery nurse, so I hope that you found the inner strength to pursue what you wanted! I'm sure you're going to be an excellent doctor, if you aren't one already! Just remember that being yourself is the biggest gift that you can give to the world and to your patients! :)

THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. And your entire channel in general really. Ironically, OB is ALL I’ve wanted to do since I was 8 years old (which could 100% change if I actually get into medical school and get to try it out) but there is still almost no one encouraging young women who want families that you can do it. So to find an encouraging voice amidst allllll of the negativity is honestly just want I needed in this season of life.

Yet another great video. Thank you Dr. Jones, i hope you know you're amazing. I love OB-GYN (as a subject & loved my rotation) but i always get discouraged to pursue this field as I am an IMG (which makes it super competitive) and family life-work life balance dilemma. I want to apply for residency this year and I'm still unsure if I should spend all my time and apply only in OBGYN or be practical and apply in IMG-friendly specialties. My heart always goes towards OBGYN and I cannot imagine myself doing anything else, I don't know if applying to OBGYN will be worth it :(. I'm happy for you that you could choose to pursue what you love. P.S.: it would be nice to have Milo in all your videos.

Hi! I’m really glad you’ve posted this. I’m an LPN going back for my RN. So far the only rotation I’ve enjoyed is OB/GYN. Eventually I’d like to become a CNM. I was a surgical technician in the US Army, and I ❤️❤️❤️OB/GYN surgeries. Especially C-sections. It always seemed like a miracle to be assisting in the birth of a baby! I considered certified nurse midwifery as a career, but in the 1980s and early ‘90s CNWs were not common in the USA. I am so glad you rightly chose the medical specialty that you truly loved.

Wow. I'm finishing my undergrad in PSYCH (I gasped when I heard you say that! SO comforting!), and I am contemplating switching to medicine (I live in a city where primarily the people here work in the medical field). My main issue, is that I've got a weak stomach. Not for surgeries, but for infections, if that makes sense. But, I'd love to work in GYNO. I know this video was posted over a year ago, but it helped me see into what my options are! Thank you so much!

Thank you for this video! I love OB/GYN, but i'm 32, an RN living in Australia, about to have my fourth child, and married to an ICU specialist. I'm seriously considering going back to med school, but I think OB training will take me FOREVER here. But when you mentioned what could you read about forever, it's reproduction medicine / women's health for me. Gah! It's so hard.

Melissa Shea I’m Aussie too. My gynae is in her mid-40s. She started as a midwife, then went to med school, and then on to be an OB/GYN. It took her eight years instead of six years to do her specialty training as she had her three kids during that time. (Maybe two during train8ng and one after?) Sometime during all of that she was in the Navy (perhaps as a RN?) and her husband was until very recently when he retired to academia so he could work hours better suited for their family life juggle. With two kids in high school and one in upper primary they do juggle, with the help of a nanny/au pair and a great community around them. Despite the juggle, she LOVES her career. She not only says it, you can tell it is her passion. So, at the end of all of this, I would say if this is your passion, follow your dream. Realise it will involve sacrifice, that your family life will be different, but your kids will see you doing something you adore. Alternatively, would a move into midwifery work for you? Definitely less study involved, and also very rewarding.

If you are in a Canberra it is highly likely. Unfortunately she wasn’t an OBGYN when I was having my babies as she was still training. She seems like she would be an amazing OB, and she is a great gynae. She has great empathy and emotional understanding to go along with her knowledge and energy. She has been in private practice with another female OBGYN for a few years now.

@@angeh9995 Yep 😂 Bec is AMAZING!! I have seen her for both OB and GYN reasons and she always makes me feel comfortable, reassured but always tells it like it is so I never have unrealistic expectations. All the doctors in my GYN practice are women with families and are super supportive. I’ve been with my doctor for 20+ years and was with her when she opened the practice with some other female doctors. She talked to me about doing this purposefully to make medicine a better career for women. As a college student at the time, it really showed me that you can be the change.

I've gotta say, as a doula and birthing mom, this is so cool to hear!! I love hearing your passion and dedication to it. I have had similar fears of one day going into midwifery - can I do it? Would I be good at it? Can I handle someone's life and baby's life in my hands? You gave me a bit of hope that maybe, one day, I could reach for it and succeed. Thanks for this!! 💕
