Nice seeing younger video producers understanding the value of practicality. Most of the time all they care about is shooting everything RAW at the highest resolution. Not all clients hire you because they think you’re Steven Spielberg

If most of the content is for KZbin, all of these ultra specs will go unnoticed. If the intended viewing medium is a theater movie screen, then yes, high end specs will make more of a difference. At the end of the day, its the creativity of the creator that makes the biggest impact. Just my opinion, but at the same time there is nothing wrong with using high end gear either. Creating something from nothing should be a joy.

I'm still using the c100mki and mkii after a decade and I really couldn't be happier. Great image, small file sizes. It's been a workhorse over the years. Almost went for the C70 but the weak hinge on the screen that tends to break and the lack of full XLR inputs really held me back. I wish Canon would have just put everything the C70 has into a C100 body and call it the mkiii. The formfactor of the C70 is absolutely amazing and I love it.. it just doesn't allow for proper and robust audio inputs.

I really want to the C100 mkii for project, youtube and doc work. The C70 looks so lush, but the price though worth it is out of my reach at the moment, I love what you said about the small file sizes and amazing battery life. I'm usually a one camera body and lens guy. I think it maybe worth doing the same here.

As someone who recently, and happily, picked up the FX30, I was looking at what camera I may upgrade or add to my gear in the future. Owning a Sony camera, I have been thinking that the FX6 would be a natural progression in choosing a higher end camera. But, I'm leaning back to the C70. Why? Well, as a low budget/indie filmmaker, I need to shoot with a camera that I can use anywhere without drawing attention to myself. So, cameras that "look" like a DSLR would be a good choice. In that vain, the C70 has that look. Whereas, the FX6 looks like a cinema camera. Solution? In DaVinci Resolve, you have the Color Space Transform tool that allows you to match shots from multiple cameras, regardless of manufacturer. So, I can see shooting with the FX30 on gimbals or quick run and gun situations, and the C70 for the locked off shots, etc. This video actually helped in making this decision. Subscribing.

One thing I've realized while transitioning more to gaffing: no matter how good your camera is, if you don't light it right the image still looks like sh*t. So the main factors are: is the camera industry standard? And, is it built in a way that you can work well with it? After those two considerations, all the other specs are extra, and then it's time to focus on other things like lighting (and lenses). "I like it" really is a good enough reason to choose a camera.

By the way Thomas, after your video I started to searching for the fixed (non variable) ND filters, and I found a very interesting option! Marumi has a magnetic set of NDs made specific for the video! Marumi Movie Kit. The key feature of this set is that it has 1 stop, 2 stops, 3 and 4. And it designed to be used in combination, like 4+3 stops to achieve 7 stops. And as I understand it doesn’t loose details and colour. I think it should be much better quality than Freewell. So with this set you can put any stops ND without needing to close the aperture. And because of magnetic it will be pretty fast

I have an FX9 and recently sold my Komodo and bought a C70, with the raw update on the C70 it’s a more versatile camera overall than the Komodo. I’ve used the FX9 and the C70 as two camera set up for interviews and in Resolve you can get them to match. Komodo has a great image but falls short in a lot areas, FX9 and FX6 only have 7 stops of ND vs C70 having 10 stops, in bright daylight I find I still need more ND to shoot wide open or even a stop down from wide open on the FX9.

@@76tygfgugthe C70 is a tiny sensor in a prosumer body that delivers a very “video” image. Different target altogether from the Komodo. Not to mention the internal ND’s are mediocre. Great video! Watching this just reminds me of the “switch”. Everything we seem to want from our cameras now is what we had 15 years ago with the dedicated video camera. A compact, all in one camera with built in xlr audio and built in ND filters. A single fixed Lens we didn’t (and couldn’t) fuse with, all with great stabilization. However, the interchange prime lenses with the fantastic low light and cinematic look is such a game changer. Eye pleasing look, but with the price tag of a car and a silly rig. Some day they will make the absolute perfect camera, they are getting close…but for now the struggle continues 😂 and I’d rather just get a simple great shot from my iPhone ☺️

No doubt. I bought the Komodo when it was launched the summer of 2020, and while i was waiting for it to come in, they announced the C70. and i was so bummed. because during that summer i was on a travel job shooting on the C500 mkii, and man, i was kind of regretting that i already bought the Komodo. The RED is definitely a PIA for tiny crews or low budgets.

Thanks for stopping by, love your videos! Yeah the komodo is great, but man is that c70 a workhorse. Internal ND, great audio, great AF, all the buttons you could need, RF lenses work well with it, and canon keeps giving it updates so now we have RAW LT / ST. It's been great for myself as a solo op The KX looks enticing bc it fixes a lot of issues I had with komodo og, but yeah it's not as ideal for the majority of projects alot of us work on hah. I go back and forth deciding what to do with my c70 and it's just too good. I wish it was in the style of the c500, but the small footprint makes it a dream for travel gigs

The combination of good af, battery, 10 bit compressed and uncompressed codecs, internal nds, video assist tools like false color, shutter angle, C4k. This all makes for the ultimate camera and rn I think the c70 is the only camera that really does this. Can’t wait to see if the new version of the Fx3 add that internal Evnd like I thought the first version would along with adding the other cinema features like false color and shutter angle. Maybe even see it in all in a hybrid body someday like a future A7 Vl

Really enjoyed this review, dude. I got to the video world with Canon Mark 3 I had bought 7 or 8 years ago and then I switched to Sony system for few years. But Sony A7III was a huge disappointment for me and in spite of getting new A7SIII I've got myself a Red Dragon 6K and I really enjoyed it. The media straight from the camera was perfect and I could see the smallest details at the actors coat. But this the biggest problem was that this camera was heavy as hell and you always need a few v-mount batteries, huge gimbal like Ronin 2 that turned every project to really expensive one. I was lucky to sell it fem months after purchasing it. I loved the quality, but the clients didn't want to deal with r3d and sometimes they just wanted a quick proress material. That was a big challenge for me to switch from Sony FX6, FX3, Red Komodo and C70, and I got the last one and I love it. These perfect canon colors remind me the time I was using my old eos camera for my first projects. This camera is perfect for my sigma 18-35 and 50-100 (that I use probably 85 percent of my filming) that I usually used with red dragon and BMPCC6K. I've got a speedbuster and now I can use full frame EF lenses. But the same time I had a lot of projects to film with Sony users or for a production that have only Sony cameras. This fall I had few projects for 40-50 days and I realized I could rent it every day so I've got myself a FX3 and I enjoy it too. These are great cameras and I used them separately or together. That's amazing they have some cool features. Its like having a two cars with different characters. These two cameras are great and I like that you enjoy them too %)

I feel the c70 is a great choice for you, haha love it you got a fx3 too! Both are incredible, and it's so nice to have them depending on the needs. I've had pocket 6k, 1dx ii, komodo & c70. I do outdoor/offroad filming and the komodo had awesome image quality, but it was a pain for run & gun. It gets heavy when built out with just a screen and one small battery, cables all over like rigging a pocket cam and it takes forever to turn on and off, then gotta black balance more. The c70 was the nicest for run n gun that I've used. Komodo still has a nicer image, deep colors and more depth to the image. I was perfectly happy with my combo of baby fx3 (zv-e1) and BM6KFF but I made a silly offer on eBay and got the c70 just for the fun of it. I have had few canons including c200, r8 and r6II and I mostly disliked them. C70 is winning me over very quickly. The DR is insane. It’s so intuitive to use. I still prefer the image out of 6KFF when shooting in decent light but not by a great margin. C70 has that filmic soft vibe like my older Blackmagic Cameras. Af and the better choice of frame rate are also a factor. It will be a hard choice in the end.

After playing with them for a few hours, I not really feeling the ergonomics of the FX6 and there are way too many buttons for me. Guess I like the simplicity of the C70 for my workflow. Guess the Sonys are going to be returned and I’m sticking to canon.

With Ninja V+ I can get some serious RAW out of the R6mkII and thats full frame. You make some valid points here Thomas, and although I don't totally agree with you, I can definitely see where you come from. I've had the c70 for a while (since it was released) and yes, the image quality is amazing, and you're right in that how good a camera is all depends on your own workflow. I ultimately decided to sell my C70, mainly because of its size/weight, but especially because of the terrible performance in low light, which is a huge requirement for the type of projects I do. So yes, it all comes down to workflow. I also shoot both Canon and Sony, but I lean towards the Sony for most of my projects because of the type of filmmaking I do. Great video!!

I really hate the hassle with these half-baked cameras. Dealbreakers: S35 (welcome to 2016), Mini-XLR (good luck with that), Marketing "internal RAW recording" when it's only 12 bit compressed slush and not 14/16 bit full fat (Sony users had this discussion over 6 years ago, btw.). Why i bought the FX6: Dual channel MMI (2 lavs, no cables, no batteries), 12.800 base iso, Auto-ND, skintones and the fact that i can just drop in some FX3s/FX30s and everything will work beautifully. One thing i have learned the hard way: never buy into idiotic audio cables/connectors and things that need Batteries. Ideally: no cables at all and one single battery. There's a reason why shoulder Camcorders have drop-in slots for wireless audio systems.

Great video! I started with a Blackmagic pocket 4k and ended up with two Canon C70s. I completely agree that internal NDs are a game changer. Something I don't see many talking about is the advantage of being able to purchase EF class and use the 0.71 adapter. Buying used EF glass (I have an EF 24-105) is some of the best cost to quality I've found. I also own the Sigma 18-35 1.8 and Sigma 50-100 1.8 which are both aps-c lenses, yet are also some of the best value to cost as well. Having a large range of used EF glass for the C70 that provide both incredible image quality and reliable autofocus at generally half the price of the full frame/competitors lenses, I've found often makes the overall cost the same or even less than those investing in another system.

Nice breakdown. I Own BM Cameras (From the Pocket 4K to The Ursa G2) and they are specialized cameras for real unless you can build a compact rig which I've managed to do with some rigging pieces. On the point of NDs... approach purchasing NDs the way you do a camera body. A lot of VNDs are okay to a point and then they go crazy when you try to stop them down too much my advice is in the future as you do more commercial work make sure you invest in solid IRNDs.

What an excellent video, great content and well thought out! I’m shooting with an fx3 right now and its a great camera, however I really don’t like the audio handle and the limitations in rigging. I don’t like a “cinema camera” in a mirrorless body. The screen is unusable and I need an external monitor for focus. And one of the major downsides for me, the e-mount system is so limiting and makes you locked in to e-mount glass. I prefer my vintage lenses, but there are times when I need something else. I invested in a couple sony primes (24/50) and a sigma 24-70. I can’t adapt them to any other camera body and that sucks. For that reason I’m thinking of selling the expensive primes because I’m looking to get something other than a Sony for my next camera. All that said I will probably keep my fx3 like you for certain jobs. What is your glass strategy, other than having vintage primes? What e, rf ir pl glass would you get to use for both cameras?

appreciate it! the fx3 is fantastic, yeah I can see taht! There's definitely limitations, buuuuut when stripped down it's a powerhouse The c70 feels much better, as it feels like a step up- a c300 / c500 definitely feels nicer bc of the ergonomics / ports but those are also twice the price of the c70 haha Yeah lensing is a difficult one, I never really enjoyed the sony lenses and just rocked the sigma 24-70 E by itself on the fx3 and that was a workhorse lens Right now- I sold my sigma 24-70 for the sony 20-70 f4 primarily for KZbin / event work I've only used the fx3 for work once and that was general event coverage, so I was okay making that decision For my c70, I just have my vintage lenses converted to EF, I'm in the processs of trying to find the right cine zooms for my setup. I'm not interested in cine primes as I have a kit of primes already I've been toying around with the idea of getting the RF24-70 as that lens is insanely good, and it'll be nice to have AF for KZbin stuff I think adding the RF24-70 + a 2-3 lens kit of cine zooms would be ideal. I'm not too interested in sharing lenses with the fx3 primarily bc the cine zooms will only be used on larger sets and I wouldn't take my fx3 on those Plus, with both having different sensor sizes, I would have to invest in full frame cine zooms to share, which is fine but those get heavier and more expensive Right now- I'm looking at the DZO Pictor 3 lens kit and tokina 25-75, 11-20 and 50-135

This a great video, canny long, but really good and I will certainly be sending it to my customers who are trying to decide on the C70! I think it is funny about how obsessed you are with internal Nds (me too) though cinema cameras don't have this as it can change back focus and they can colour shift, so it is therefore more consistent to use external solid nds like tiffen or Schneider. The fx6 definitely has the same sensor as the fx3 btw and the whole audio issue is what stops it being an almost perfect camera. It still great but even if it had one XLR on the body would have been great and considering the fs5 did it's very annoying this doesn't, even if it had the mi shoe adaptor would have been something. The main thing I hate about the fx3 and I only figured this out recently is that you cannot run shutter angle so have to change the shutter speed with frame rates which is amazing all cinema cameras should have shutter angle.

If I were on more video only sets with ACs I wouldn't care hah, but for the majority of my jobs I'm running solo and when using primes it gets a bit hectic carrying and swapping filters Yeah the audio on the fx6 is a big bummer, especially since those top handles dont feel sturdy. I haven't used my c70 top handle in a long time bc I now use a bright tangerine one which I prefer- I couldn't do this with the fx6 bc I lose my audio Yeah shutter angle would be such a great addition! Having used them both, I haven't seen the dynamic range advantage in C70 I hoped for. I tried pushing them a lot, various lighting conditions, all types of codecs and realized they both have pretty much the same dynamic range, just distributed differently. So, when properly exposed on each, they both yield the same. With that knowledge and knowing FX3 has much better rolling shutter performance and having wider field of view, I've sold the C70. Contemplating a used C500 ii or Alexa XT. But just happy with FX3 by itself. If oscar winner Greg Fraser (of Dune, Batman etc) can shoot an entire Hollywood sci fi movie on FX3, we are kidding ourselves if we really think we need more to be better.

That's interesting. Well Gareth Edwards did shoot his first feature with the old EX3 with a 35mm Letus adaptor and some cheap Nikon primes, so maybe shooting on a modest Sony camera again appealed to his indie roots.

I personally would go FX6 for a perfect pairing with the FX3. You haven’t experienced auto VND yet probably. The c70 is super35 with not as good of low light. If you shoulder rig the FX6 it negates all of the heavier rigging and is super stable and comfortable. As you grow in your video production career you’ll probably find yourself doing more two camera shoots. That’s cool though.. to each his own.

yeah I get that! on paper yes fx6 and fx3 and fx9 all work seamlessly together I've shot a bunch on the fx6 and eVND is cool, but it's not ground breaking for me. I'm cool with / without it Haven't had any issues with low light, I'll crank it up to 3200 iso and it's plenty fine, though it's no FX3 with the 12800 For the majority of my gigs and the bigger jobs I've gotten, it's all been one camera and the fx6 / c70 and Komodo all would be great. I just feel overall the c70 works better for me, ya know? Same reasoning for owning the fx3, for my needs it's perfect Plus, I way prefer the image out of my c70 over the fx6, which that was a huge factor

All of your words in this video make perfect sense to me, I’m kinda falling into the same category, looking for a best all around compact cinema camera, FX6 could’ve been my best bet but the handle/only audio input is definitely a deal breaker. URSA mini is a great camera, but again, too bulky for me, c70 is not my type, not a fan of canon’s color science, so, I think I’ll just wait for a while, hopefully Sony come up with a new FX line fix the fx6 issue, or blackmagic to assemble a cube like camera with a better rolling shutter. The pain of using bmpcc6k/6k pro I relate so much the Frankenstein ergonomic and the power consumption are just driving me nuts.

Excellent video, so much so this video alone made me a subscriber. I was in the same position and drew a lot of the same conclusions. However, in a sliding doors moment, I went for the FX6. Both the FX6 and C70 are excellent, my factors were the low light performance of the FX6, especially ‘run and gun’ in the doc format, full frame over S35, full XLRs over mini, and I was already part of the Sony ego system. (However this isn’t a factor as such, if the camera is worth it, I’d sell the glass and buy for a new system). But I’d sooner not have to buy glass for two different systems. FX6 has superior autofocus, but one issue which really worries me, was the purple spot on the speed booster when trying to get that full frame look on the C70, can’t be having that on a shoot. Plus, the raw thing is a bit of a myth. It’s just a more robust codec. No camera recorded ‘every single ISO’ etc. (check out Alister Campbell for the full details on that) with Catalyst on Sony, you can even change the WB in post. Either which way, I loved the video. I’ll be watching more. And it did make me wonder… should I have got the c70 over my fx6 🤔

thank you! 100% the fx6 for low light, I love the dual base iso with 800 / 12800 in slog3, it's just absurd how clean it is in 12800 haha Yeah the fx6 AF is phenomenal - for the purple flare, I only see it in heavy backlight situations where the sun is like center frame haha. I've been using it 100% of the time and it shows up like 1-2% of the time- but totally agree def can't have that on a shoot. I carry the normal adapter incase it becomes more of a problem Yeah having a 12bit codec is pretty nice! I never change ISO in post with raw, only on my pocket 6k bc of the workflow it required. But I do love changing wb in post if needed Thank you! Yeah both are incredible cameras, I wish I could have em all haha but the c70 is just something I'm drawn to Thanks for watching & sharing!

Love the c70 but my only problem with it is at times the image seems a little TOO soft. It’s lacking a little detail in comparison to my pocket 6k cameras. Sometimes I wish it was a 6k camera shooting a 4k image so it could have just a little more detail. I also wished the screen was a 5 inch tilt screen instead of a flip out…or at least be able to have a second hinge that lets the screen stay in-line with the camera so you could just tilt it up instead of NEEDING to flip it out.

I really didn't like the canon r5 / r6 footage for some reason, the DR didn't feel as good as my fx3 or c70, so for a mirrorless setup forsure sony BRAW is great, but I never truly fell in love with it. I really enjoyed it but I think the canon image fits my style more. I do want to try the Ursa 12k at some point, it seems really sick and having internal ND would be helpful (I shot on the p6k and used vnd filters back in the day) All 3 are amazing, especially nowadays and you can't go wrong If I had to rank for client work Canon, BRAW, sony Sony has always felt a bit "plasticy" to me, unless I use vintage lenses to help the image That said, I shoot with my fx3 / c70 for my KZbin videos now and they match up pretty well! hope that's helpful haha

@@thomas.kovacik super helpful, and I appreciate how thorough you were. One more thing I want to ask you about: I’ve been shopping for a camera that can allow me to have stunning high end images for short films, but when client work arrives I can also rely on it to deliver there. That’s why I was so stuck between c70 and Komodo. Komodo seems to have better image quality, but canon has those things like you mentioned in your video, internal audio NDs, stuff like that. For what I’m looking to do, I feel like the c70 is the better option, and is definitely Capable of producing a great image for short films…right? Or, do I spend a bit extra, and use the Komodo for both since the image quality is technically better, and it still has autofocus. Some advice I’ve seen is to get the cheaper camera and get high end lenses, like Dzofilm. Would you say C70 is the better route for what I’m looking for, or maybe the Komodo might fit better? Your two cents would be appreciated

Sounds like the c70 is the move Personally I’m not the biggest fan of the RED image, and their cameras kinda require a small team Sure you can solo op it but having to swap filters, black shade and deal with media doesn’t sound fun solo haha The c70’s image is gorgeous and there’s loads of codecs for media requirements I was enticed by the red but after almost 6 months of owning the c70 I’m so happy with it I could see the need for a c500 or c300 mostly for the build / SDI for bigger sets but that won’t be a move for a little bit The c70 is super versatile, it’s great 100% invest in good lenses, DZO lenses are good but they’re heavy and long Vintage glass is solid, the RF lenses are really good too

It’s great to see someone with this level of enthusiasm. All three cameras mentioned have huge pros and cons but the c70 is a dslr design and very soon becomes awkward to rig. The fx6 is great if the monitor is good enough but it likely won’t be and neither the c70 or fx6 are designed for an extra monitor. The Komodo acts and is a proper professional cine camera and the box style absolutely expects a monitor or evf. Think external audio and rigging and there isn’t anything the Komodo can’t do. The auto focus is surprisingly good and the new elq codec is fantastic. The cine tools and menu layout LUT support and breakouts are all pro level. R3d is insane to grade and for product oriented work it’s a massive plus to nail the colours. If you compare a c70 to a c300ii or iii it’s a real reminder of how dslr and not a cine camera design the c70 is. It’s a great camera and is fun to use but rigged out and the flip monitor becomes a massive pain. Button placements are odd as are the ports on the op side. The rigid handle is also a drag. Impossible to put on your shoulder. Not the cleanest image in low light but has a very pleasing look. Great to hear all this youthful enthusiasm. Good luck with all the shooting.

love the insights man. i’ve got a couple questions. i currently have the A7s iii and love it a lot. however, i’m kind of reaching the next level in my career while also wanting to really branch out with my own independent work/ passion projects (specifically docs and short films). i’ve been eyeing the FX3 because i really want a pure video camera. i would’ve bought the FX3 to begin with honestly, but it wasn’t out a few months before when i bought the A7S. do you think the FX3 would still be a great buy even though it functions very similarly to the A7S? or should i set my sights on an FX6? the c70 is definitely enticing, but a lot of my work relies on AF, so i have all my sony glass and really don’t have the budget to cop the c70 along with canon glass to go with it. internal ND would be fantastic but honestly it’s not super necessary for what i do (i seem to be a few steps behind you career wise). my clients truly don’t care about internal raw or the negligible image quality boost that internal ND would bring over a VND. it would purely be something that would just be nice for me to have, which i’m not sure would be worth the couple extra thousand an FX6 would cost. not to mention the friendlier/less heavy codecs of the FX3. i know it sounds like i’m answering my own question lol but would like your thoughts on maybe future proofing with the FX6 since i do want to get deeper into personal filmmaking along with naturally progressing in my client video career, or is the FX3 the better buy since it’s like 85% the same camera…. appreciate any input! i know either camera would be a pretty smart buy. at the end of the day a second body would be ideal to have anyway. maybe make the FX3/FX6 the workhorse and move the A7S3 to a personal/second angle camera. love the content man keep it up!

appreciate it! yeah that a7siii is a great camera, I know loads of people who depend on it the fx3 is fantastic, it's very very similar to the a7siii. The big difference now comes with that new firmware they put out - check out my other video about that. There's lots of features that help separate it even more from the a7siii I love the design primarily, it's smaller, I dont use EVF so I dont miss it, multiple record buttons is welcomed, a big ol fan, tally lights, the list goes on it's a tough move from the a7siii bc theyre very similar, but I think it could be worth it the fx6 is an entire different beast, you could also send it towards that and have the a7siii as a b to it Totally get what you mean about the client's needs, I think you can get by with the a7siii, fx3, and fx6, which is a nice place to be in the workflow and design of a cinema camera like the fx6 definitely makes things nicer and easier for the operator - exposure tools, shutter angle, internal nd, and the overall feel are much preferred. It is a video camera after all haha, but the a7siii and fx3 get by bc theyre so video focused, they just miss out on a couple key features, which is okay yeah the idea of making the next camera the workhorse is a good idea! I think it just depends, you could also move to the fx3, save up and add the fx6 so then you forsure have two cameras that function similarly (base iso slog3 on fx3 is same as fx6- a7siii low base is 640) I would prob add the fx6 personally, if I was in need of internal nd / a more robust camera for shoots- I think the time will come when you are just kinda over working with mirrorless cameras. Until then, I think the fx3 / a7siii is a solid camera to work with!
