I started game dev recently, and I never tried Unity but Godot is SO GOOOOOOD! Its just so convinient and there isn't an unnecessary amount of garbage that I won't ever use, the tools are easy to understand, the documentation is so good, the community is friendly, its just so good

Your game ideas look pretty clever, you have the gift. You'll get far :) Congrats on choosing Godot, it is the sensible choice for most of us. Cheers.

You're hilarious! I love the edits in this video I was smiling the whole way through. And why does anime eyes look so perfect on godot 😂

Well said! Thanks for sharing your experience! I love Godot and while I've considered Unity, the trust factor was burned by them.

I switched to Godot because Unreal's Nanite and Lumen Dynamics made my coal-fueled Pentium II Windows ME pc to start emitting harmful radiation like a tiny star.

Same, I feel the same way about Godot.

My biggest issue with Unity became, how time consuming it was to get the very basics set up every time (like input mapping, character controller, etc.). Godot, with its flatter architecture is just a breeze to get trough that part. And by low-key forcing me to use composition driven designs, it also showed me, that this design approach aligns way better with the way my brain works. Got my first fully working Match-3 game up and running in only 3 days, after a week of tutorials - including sound, start menu and a proper level reset and end game button. Never got these last bits in using Unity, because I was still too busy to get the actual game mechanics to work.

When I was starting out, I tried unity and everything just felt so slow. Changing a word in a script, waiting for compilation, waiting to play test... while Godot is much faster and easier to iterate with

Only used unity once and had a really hard time with it, the nail in the coffin for me for never using it again was also the changing of the terms of service. Godot feels so much simpler and intuitive to me, i love it

LOL I'm sorry but you not gonna make it. Unity is far far better than Godot... As Unreal Engine Fan

I've learnt Godot way before the runtime fee (around Godot 3.4) because Unity always felt so corporate, glad I dodged a bullet there xD I have a lot of problems and nitpicks with Godot, but since the project is open-source other people likely also have those problems and are probably gonna fix them eventually. A lot of the issues I've had have actually been fixed in the new 4.4 update! Better physics engine, proper game debugging, typed dictionaries, camera previews, etc

I hadn't heard of it before, but I won't be surprised to see commercial games using Godot more and more! It can do just about anything!

How did you start to learn? I downloaded it and am just learning how to code in my college class with python 3. Where do I start?
@iheartfunnyboysgames2 күн бұрын
The short answer is: KZbin tutorials The long answer: I first started learning programming my first semester in university with a MATLAB course, and had 8 or so years of university and professional programming experience (embedded electrical engineer) before picking up game dev and learning higher level programming languages like C# and gd_script (Godot's built-in language, very similar to python). When I started learning game dev, it was with Unity and I watched Game Maker's Toolkit tutorial on recreating Flappy Bird. I riffed from that first project and then have been tinkering ever since, looking up YT tutorials on specific mechanics I want to implement if I get stuck and consuming a ton of video essays on every aspect of video games to learn more. I also took time at the beginning to 1) remake simple games like tetris and breakout, 2) attempt a dream game to get an idea of how out of how much I needed to learn before trying that again (lol), and 3) participating in longer game jams (2 weeks) to fail fast and learn about scope (plus they are super fun!). I recommend following a tutorial or three on simple games, even if they aren't a genre you would like to make in general, to learn what a game engine is capable of and what some common terminology is. Since you are starting with python as a language, check out this Brackey's tutorial on making a platformer in Godot: kzbin.info/www/bejne/goDLl6Sgosamn5I . I also really liked this tutorial on making a game that uses all the Control (ui) nodes in Godot: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZOZqZhubLeIe5Y , I personally made a few UI-only games which I think are a great way to learn how to make cool UI that can go into future projects as well (every project has UI!).

Great video! I've personally chosen the fork "Redot" which was made because of how woke the Godot managers are.
