I think you hit the nail on the head… I have a buddy that lives in LA CA and can’t understand why I live in the PNW…. I like changing my sports, back country skiing, snow snowshoeing, winter camping, spring hiking, breaking out the mtn bike, then the road bike, back packing, rock climbing , the fall back on the mtn bike, hunting, and getting ready for winter!

you see, i have to confess i havent been watching your australian videos too often. It just isn't my world. As soon as I saw "winter" on your video i clicked immediately. life is just quite boring when it's hot - and i know the majority will say the same about winter. however the unpredictable weather and just the cold alone made me move to norway, past the arctic circle, and this is where i am truly happy. I'd also try to move to Canada if I was born in the US

Welcome home Dan! Looking forward to seeing some videos from you out about in your Africa jeep around BC. While you are planning your next build/expedition to another part of the world you haven’t been too yet. I moved to Calgary/Canada 11yrs ago. I had a mental perception that it’s probably the best place in the world for me to live. And it hasn’t disappointed! You get the most out of living here when you have somewhere else to compare it to. I can only compare to England. And few other places I’ve been on holiday. It’s nice to hear someone as well traveled as you still loves it. 👊

If I ever get the same question, I'll forward this video, you answered it perfectly!! I love the western provinces in winter because they get so cold, it takes your breath away and makes you feel alive. I would much rather put a few layers of clothing on in -35c and explore winters beauty, then to sit in an air-conditioned house to avoid sweating at +35c and humidity. Thanks for all the great videos, enjoy some time off. Looking forward to the next build and adventure.

I've wanted to move back so many times but marriage and kids and divorces has kept me in Australia all these years. I think you have just met the right Canadians, Dan. I have lived all over Canada, including Whitehorse where we met and Yellowknife, but I have met so many Canadians who hate winter and prefer to stay indoors all winter if it was up to them.
@seanfrank41582 жыл бұрын
It is a bit different when you grew up here. I'm nearly 50 and the winters are really starting to take a toll. Winter after winter of dealing with freezing cold, shoveling snow, windchill, and so on gets old real quick. You put things in place to make it easier but sometimes the idea of never seeing snow again is appealing.
@duncdunc762 жыл бұрын
Can't argue with that excellent reasoning👍 It totally resonates with me as I want to move back to Wyoming some day as I had the same experience living there as you do in Canada. Unfortunately where I live now there's just a lot less people focused on the outdoor adventuring lifestyle which makes it a bit harder to get out and do things with others because of the different mindset. Personally just never have the desire to go watch a sporting event which is a lot of what my current friends like to do on the weekends lol. Hi Dan, hope you are doing well. I am interested to learn if you could pick between two absolutely identical vehicles (same weight, same power, same everything) and the only difference was that one had a modern Diesel engine (with AdBlue) and the other was a modern Petrol/Gas engine. What would you pick for a trip around the world - Diesel or Petrol. In other words, factoring in availability and reliability/quality of fuel, what would you pick.
@TheRoadChoseMe Жыл бұрын
That depends entirely on where you are going. The diesel in many parts of the world will destroy a modern diesel engine (and /or the computer will shut it down in less than a week). If you're sticking to the developed parts of the work the diesel would be OK, but to go truly remote (West Africa, for example) gas is the choice.
@hanenlos Жыл бұрын
@@TheRoadChoseMe have you in your travels (or heard from others) come across places that only sold diesel but no gas?

Never. In fact, I've seen the opposite many, many times, because diesel trucks easily go 500+ miles on a tank, while motorbikes and scooters (which outnumber cars and trucks 100 to 1) only go 100km. Check out this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6DblaKgftWcfbs and kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIXWg5umZ9CUd6s

It's impressive the battery could hold a charge at all after two winters in storage. Once the battery freezes it's permanently damaged and can't recharge as much. They only freeze if they are stored discharged. Something that works well for me in Manitoba is permanently mounting a 3 outlet extension cord under hood, plugging the block heater, a charger and battery warming blanket in. That way, the battery is always topped off and can't freeze. Also, if you drive away plugged in it's preferable to only damage a $10 extension instead of your block heater cord.

The battery was actually on a battery tender the entire time, and the engine was run up to temp every month or so. Maybe the battery would have been OK.. but I just don't want to mess around with it for the rest of winter.

I love California because I have all the access of snow and none of the drawbacks of having to live in it. Australia does feel isolating in terms of its temperature zones I totally understand your feeling there. It would suck if I couldn't just drive to escape our weather sometimes
