Why i chose medicine over computer science.

i know a lot of people who like myself were choosing between computer science and medicine, and just wanted to share my thoughts to why I ultimately chose medicine!

I have been going through the same dilemma, between pursuing my medical career further or going into CS. Finally i am going to continue with my medical degree, and teach myself CS and the things I love about coding, maybe some online degree too, down the road. I don't know too much about medicine but I'd like to give some advice based on the fact I'm studying CS and my sister is interested in eventually becoming a pediatrician. Here's some questions you should ask yourself if you want to go into CS or medicine: CS and medicine: Am I fascinated by learning every day and putting pieces of info together into some overarching puzzle of knowledge? Do I enjoy spending hours looking through patient records/code and using critical thinking to solve a big mystery? Am I ok with taking a problem home with me and spending all evening/night thinking about it? Medicine-specific: Am I ok making life and death choices and living with my failiures/mistakes? Do I handle stressful situations well? Am I generally extraverted? Do I go out of my way to help people (not just holding the door for them, stuff like volunteering or showing up to your friend's game) Do I spend a lot of time studying for classes? If not, am I ok with spending a lot of time studying? Have I always wanted to do medicine or do I have an ambition to do medicine that'll get me through 11+ years of school? CS-specific: Does programming naturally click for me? (I feel like more for programming than medicine, natural talent does play a role. That doesn't mean you need to be naturally gifted to be a good software developer though) Am I generally introverted? Am I fine essentially interpreting and solving logic puzzles 40 hours a week for the rest of my life? Am I fine with banging my head against a wall for 4 hours trying to find out why an algorithm isn't working only to find it was because of some extremely trivial mistake? Do I get a great sense of pride and accomplishment from building something, especially if it's complex? Do I study less than most, but study effectively and do well on my exams? Am I ok with getting half of my education not from college, but from learning and building stuff outside of college? If so, am I prepared to spend 2-4 hours outside of classes and assignments each day teaching myself CS? Am I ok with being in a very cyclical industry where I don't have nearly as much job security as doctors do? My sister and I are pretty similar but I think what pushed me more towards CS was being introverted and honestly not being as interested in directly helping people purely for the joy of it, I instead get more enjoyment from building a really complex system that I only half understand and having it do really interesting things that help out potentially millions indirectly. CS also sort of comes naturally for me while I'm not really able to put in dozens of hours a day to study like my sister does. My sister has also wanted to be a pediatrician pretty much her entire life whereas I've never really wanted to be anything specific until now and I've explored pretty much every academic field I've ever been interested in including physics, engineering, medicine, economics, business, and finally CS. So if you are not firmly convicted in wanting to go into medicine, you may change your mind in school or become trapped in a lifestyle you don't really enjoy.

Hey Julissa!! Glad it helped! I completely agree, they are very complimentary degrees! One thing I would say about pursuing a comp sci major as a premed is that it’s going to be a significant amount of extra work to complete it, and all the comp sci requirements might make it harder to complete the premed requirements to get u into med school. But, on the flip side, if you’re able to do it, it could rly make u quite the unique applicant

We're literally the same. CS and Medicine are my only options. I'm in my 3rd year in CS now but realizing, while I am interested, I can't really think of what job I want to get once I graduate. While in medicine, there are 2 specialized field I want to be in. So I am really having this dilemma just when I'm a few years in graduating. I’m really worried about choosing between medicine and technology. Mostly because of the debt. Yes, the salaries are high, and private practice pay can be higher. But you can also make a fortune by working at MAANG and other top tech companies. Then there’s malpractice insurance. Not sure what to choose and I have a few years left as an undergrad student….Both routes are attractive and tough.

You bring up good points. You also gotta think about what you’d enjoy doing. Do you enjoy working directly with people and making treatment plans to improve their individual health? Do you think you’d get fulfillment seeing your patient outcomes improve as a result of those treatment plans? Or are you interested in more of a systems level impact through tech. Like yes you won’t be directly seeing the people you’re impacting, but you’ll be able to see how you’ve impacted things on a large scale. If you don’t think you want to directly interact with the people you’re impacting, then tech is a better choice. At the end of the day, salary is good for both, it comes down to what you’d rather see yourself doing.

there are definitely pros and cons with both fields. What I will say is that there are a lot of fields in medicine; for example, there are countless specialities in becoming a doctor, and even other careers in medicine. Some will involve themselves more with some of those more intense parts of medicine, while some might not. So I would take some time to shadow and observe medical professionals in different fields to see what you like most.

If you want/like medicine beacuse of the beautiful caritative side of medicine, the idea of "helping" others 😅, let me tell you, the health care system every where is just against all that ideal heavenly practice we dream about when we are super puppy studying medicine all full of expectations and unreal ideas of what we'll be doing as a physician in real life 😢😅😅.. been burnout, facing the real horrible world of treating just clients strad of "patients" have driven many doctor to leaving medicine, as me 🙋🏽‍♀️🙋🏽‍♀️. I can do more for people within another field than being a doctor. Unless you would be a doctor working for free for everybody with the budget enough to pay every single thing that is needed to give the proper attention a sick person needs. Good Luck 🤞

I’ve had quite an interest in medicine from the age of about 13 when I would watch and sometimes read about medical dilemmas and conditions. Not talking about series like greys anatomy💀, sure that one is good to but more of an actual reality series where they take you on a day trip with a doctor in the hospital and patients etc. I started watching it daily and watched it for two years or smth. After the second year it disappeared from the television rip but right so.. I remember when I was in hs/middle school and reading quite a few things in my biology exams that were related to that series. That’s how I managed to get quite good scores on biology. At the time I wasn’t thinking about what I wanted to do it was just an interest of mine that came in quite naturally. The past year or so, I’ve been failing biology (not saying this proudly) like fr badly failing and I’ve lost all interest. Not to be that person but the teacher made me grow a hate for biology. I’m no longer interested and just idk man it’s just like nah. So I’ve been thinking about doing cs because of it being quite broad. From developing applications for people that create digital art to helping mechanics with software. The broadness and technical mistreat combined with the coding made me interested. I’ve tried writing code by learning through Yt and have found it to be quite fun. But now I’m a bit lost because I feel like I still have a desire to know more about medicine and helping people more directly.. (plus, becoming a military doctor is definitely something that I’m interested in) Im still in hs and have about a year or so to decide on what to do with my studies.. No clue what I’m gonna do dude tbh just putting this out here so that if I come back to this vid, which, probably will, I’ll read this and be like damn yo was worried about nothing So yeah hopefully I’ll figure it out lmao and when I do I’ll put an update on my experience here so that others can read it too for if you’re also in this dilemma

dude, I'm in the same position. I dropped out of my first semester of uni because I got really confused of what I even wanted to do. I had a really really huge passion for medicine. Honestly the only interest I ever had. But last year in senior year of high school I got so confused of what I wanted to do. I don't know if I should do nursing->med school or engineering. Engineering is really cool and can open lots of opportunities but I really don't have the best experience with physics, plus I didn't do calculus in my senior year. But it just looks so cool and I want to work with airplanes. Medicine on the other hand is also extremely cool. I've always done well in Biology, Chemistry etc. I don't know when my passion for it died. But it's slowly coming back up.

And if I wanted to, I can do med school. But in the end, my dream is to become a pilot and fly planes. I just need. a backup degree so I can make money to pay for flight training. Haha keep us posted!! It’s a tough decision fs and you’ll probably go back and forth multiple times. I always think about CS as something you can always come back to while med is harder to do that bc of the rigid schooling with it. But at the end of the day exposing yourself to both as much as you can will help you figure out what sticks. Best of luck to both of you!!

Unfortunately I think most programs are only straight from high school. However, I know there are some programs that you can apply to in your sophomore or junior year of undergrad where if you get in, you complete your bachelors degree at that university then matriculate to their medical school!

two years have passed and I still can't decide on something. in my freshman year, I realized that I needed to start looking for a college major, am good with technology and I am currently taking AP CS at my high school it's kind of fun but only for the first 30 minutes, I took biology and it was so much easier than math for me, I guess it was because I was enjoying learning about the human body, am decent at math am not Albert einstein but am okay, am between CS or Medicine but they are so different and my parents aren't helping either, my dad says that I will be a slave to work if I do medicine and that I will not have time for my future family, and my mom just said " Do whatever you like and enjoy" But guess what I enjoy doing both, I NEED HELP!!

I'm in your shoes right now as well. I'm taking AP CSA as a sophomore in high school, but as you said it's only fun for 30 minutes and I can't really see myself doing it for entire workdays. My parents both come from computer science fields too, so they could help me if I decided to become a software engineer. But, I am really curious about the human body and how life works in general, as I believe the human body is more complex than anything we can create artificially. I think you both have some really interesting thoughts - I think you should try shadowing doctors and see how you like that, and then you can compare that to how you like CS. I think the two are also very different so you should be able to like one more than the other! Also yall are still in high school you got plenty of time

omg, i’m going trough this problem! i’ve always wanted to be a doctor and in my country (brazil) it takes only 6 years, directly from high school. but i want to move to canada and there you need a bachelor degree before medical school that can be in any faculty. so i wanted a bachelor that could also give me a career if i don’t get to go to med school after it. because of it, i think computer science is a great option… but i don’t know how could i fulfill the required classes of medical admission in my degree..

My father is a web developer and he can help me do better in computers and coding just like in your case, but I wanna be a doctor instead. He asked me, "why medicine, and not computer science?" I support your medicine pick. You can get into FAANG off the streets by grinding the right problems with a laptop and internet connection. I could probabaly get someone with 120 IQ+ from no coding to a "high level" coding job in 6-12 months, especially if they had a problem solving background (math, physics, etc) Medicine is WAY more gatekept. As you said, you can't just start googling for problem sets. There's one place you have to go: medical school and that has prereqs, admission committees and a price tag that's way more than my Leetcode subscription. The gatekeeping is a good thing once you're in the club.

Cs Ain't all about coding bro, I feel like this is a misconception that everyone outside CS has, sure u can learn how to code online but u can't learn everything 'bout CS online and there are specialized fields in CS where u need at least a master's degree to get in, like A.I, I could go on and on about this but anyway my point is it's not as simple as u make it out to be

Hey Jotham - glad you mentioned this bro! You're completely right - there are definitely a lot of advanced fields in CS that require higher education, and I should have made that clear. I guess my point is that it's easier to make the transition from medicine to cs than the other way around. Medicine has a lot more barriers to entry in that formal education is necessary at like all levels, versus CS you can teach yourself and get started before requiring formal education.

@@ArvindRajan That's cool man, most KZbinrs wouldn't even reply to a negative comment, anyway ur right about medicine having a lot of barriers of entry coz medical personnel are literally responsible for human lives I understand that, that's y they undergo a lot of years of studying coz theriz no room for mistakes in medicine as such mistakes would cost a human life, and most medical degrees are a bit more expensive than CS ( even considering the number of years of study) whereas in CS employers just look for talent, even though u have no degree as long as u can prove to them that u can build their infrastructure and u can leetcode they'll hire u ovcoss apart from very specialized fields like artificial intelligence and algorithms design that usually need like a master's degree or PhD

Love the video broo, I been facing this dilemma for so long 😅. I am currently based in Ireland and i’m a 3rd year Computer Science student! Over here we can do Medicine as an undergraduate degree which is (5/6 years) or a graduate degree which is (4 years) similar to US however we can apply with any bachelors degree with no pre-requisite. When I was picking my undergraduate degree after high school I wish this video was around because I went with computer science over medicine for more of a lifestyle and faster financial freedom reasons. But now I am thinking of applying to graduate medicine cause I feel I would enjoy medicine as a long-term career more!! I really still want to use my computer science degree tho since I spent 4 years studying it 😅, I am thinking of freelancing coding during next 4 years of medical school would you have any other suggestions on how to combine both computer science and medicine?

Hey Sankeerth!! Thanks so much for the comment man - this is some really interesting insight!! I completely understand where you’re coming from - all my friends from high school that chose computer science are about to enter well paying jobs while I’m just now starting medical school - which is an interesting feeling 😂. But hey man, I think that’s a brilliant plan. The truth is, these two fields are only becoming closer and more integrated. I think you need to ask yourself if you want to work directly with patients, or you want to work in medicine creating infrastructure with computer science. For example, my dad works in computer science related to health insurance, so he knows some medical stuff but has no medical degree. If you want to work directly with patients, definitely consider going to graduate medical school, and you could potentially do those CS side projects if you have time. However, you could also consider a career where you practice medicine, and also conduct computer science research relevant to medicine. This way you can pursue both interests! But hey man, there are countless opportunities that you have and best of luck with what you pursue :)

that's the exact problem I ran into six months ago, and here are some insights you can get from my experience. After graduating from high school, I decided to study the degree I've always wanted... Medicine... The reason was pretty simple, I have loved medical subjects because they answered many of my questions, about how our body works as a system, the reason why something happens because of something else, the how and why behind our body's disease, physiological responses... etc. After studying for one semester at the medical school, I'm thinking about switching to CS, but before explaining the why... I'd like to tell you about how I personally found medicine, so you better understand my case. *Important intro* I was full of enthusiasm when I started my medical studies, because after high school, I ended up graduating in the top ten students in my country. Such achievement made me confident that I will be able to learn CS besides medicine, and potentially get hired only with online courses. When it came to choosing the degree, I was still holding that assumption and chose medicine, especially because of its status in my society, and you kinda look smart when you study it as it's a very competitive major in my city. In the entrance exam of the medical school, I got the second highest mark among more than 2000 applicants (To be honest, the advantage of my English knowledge has helped a great deal). That has reinforced the assumption of me being able to keep up with learning coding besides studying medicine. The big BUT here is: I realized that working as a doctor isn't the thing I really want to do, I just loved the subjects, they were just engaging for me, but when it comes to medicine as a career... I found it not that sexy. Thus I swiched to computer science as I found it more suitable for me as a career and roughly the same in love and passion. Well, there are absolutely careers which require a background in medicine and CS, such as bioinformatics amd advanced research roles, but these weren't available for me, and even if they'll be available someday, I am certain that a pure CS career is the best option for me, after opsessing with programming and careers during the semester break in the last two months. The main point I aimed to get to, after all of this is: "It's not only about how much you like studying a certain major, or how good you are initially at it... It's actually more about what you can do with your degree, knowledge, and skills. If the career following your degree isn't appealing to you, and you don't have that calling for it, it's very possible that you will lose your passion when facing tough challenges in the way, and when you lose your passion _or better to be called initial intrest_ ... You usually no longer be special, and if your aren''t special, you'll usually end up jobless... Or at least unhappy with your job" That's it, 1- First determine what you would love to do (let's make it realistic and not to say traveling in space for instance), or at least know the tools and things you want to work on till you're dead. 2- Be aware of your strengths and weaknesses, so you put yourself in the so called "winning game", the specialization in which you have some advantage. 3- Know what's possible, and don't treat exceptions as the absolute truth. Finding such answers requires massive research, but I'll say that the book: So Good They Can't Ignore You by Cal Newport is currently the best place for you. So, if you like working as a doctor, and helping people motivates you to work hard, and you think you have the capacity to study it... Good luck with it my friend, you don't need to worry about other career options, if you would like to work as a doctor, or maybe as a researcher if available for you, just give it the needed focused effort so you get what you want, because doctors usually have a clear and stable career. But if you aren't sure of your choice, I think you shouldn't hurry in your decision and take your time discovering yourself, and see if you really fit in the medical career. I've certainly been in your shoes someday, and I assumed that I can do both gigs... But the fact is: when you trace two rabbits at the same time, you end up catching none of them. I'm not a psychic to know whether you will choose medicine or CS, but what I'm certain of is that most people can't do both, except in degrees that extensively combine both fields, such as bioinformatics. If you haven't yet decided what field to go for, this is probably due to two reasons: 1- You don't want to regret missing the opportunity of studying medicine, thus you chose it with the belief that you'll then learn CS out of college. 2- You overly consider the social status a degree can offer you. In short, if you chose medicine for the first reason, I can refer that to a fallacy called Loss Aversion. Now I'll just give you this title to do your own research. If that's because of the second reason, I can tell you that doing the thing you love can not be replaced with status, this should be the last thing to consider when choosing a career, as it might cost you years of unfulfilling work. That's all I could include in this comment, I still have more reasons why learning computer science outside of college isn't the optimal choice, even for engineers. I hope that was helpful for you, I really tried to separate personal experience from general advice, feel free to ask any question about career choice especially between these two fields. I'd like to thank this channel for putting such a topic into discussion, which has really encouraged me to type and edit this for around one hour :) I can also give the resources I learned from to guide you in choosing your career, but for now, check the book So Good They Can't Ignore You and remember, don't trace two rabbits at once :).

But after doing pharm D you can't directly open a pharmacy for yourself you will still need some experience about the placement and price etc. And you know that doing pharm d for 5 years and then gaining some experience and then opening a pharmacy ,after that making it reach to a high traffic will almost take you 10 years. And nowdays generation want to be millionare at the age of 22--25 . Nowdays generation dont want to enter such a long plan. Btw thats for your suggestions and time. I really appreciate that❤️

I'm going through a real dilemma.. I love computers. Like I really really love computers and anything tech-related. Whether it be hardware, software, coding, programming, you name it, I'm a really big tech enthusiast and like looking up tech news and keeping up-to-date with them. My parents however want me to be a doctor. I have no interest in medicine at all. I hate biology and chemistry, and looking at stuff like blood makes me want to vomit. I don't see myself as a doctor or working in a medical field at all. I tried talking to my parents regarding that and failed to convince them. Now I'm in my first year of medical college and I'm very disappointed, sad and my mental health is down. I have zero interest in all the things I'm learning, and I feel like the subjects are way too difficult for me. I've lost hope convincing my parents and I don't know what to do. But I'm not seeing myself working as a doctor AT ALL. What I'm planning to do is, after finishing my medical college years, I'll choose a completely different job route away from the medical field just to prove my parents wrong. I just don't wanna work as a doctor at all. I'll probably rely on some online computer courses or something and try to find a job that is related to computers/tech. I do have a high knowledge about computers and tech due to how much I've been looking up those topics since they do pique my interest. But I'm fully aware that I'm for sure not qualified for a computer-related job. But who knows what the future has for me after all though. I guess I'll wait and see. But those are my genuine thoughts for now.

I wasted my time by watching loads of webshows and playing Pubg mobile and ended up with low grades 72% in 12th and very bad rank in Karnataka Cet and Neet. These engineering colleges are demanding 20-30 lakh donation to get enrolled in Cse which I felt is lot of money to Invest in for a btech degree.

I disagree. You can’t teach engineering to a doctor, but engineer’s understand medicine, since most engineers in biotech are chemical/ bio engineers and electrical with a bio background. Most understand the physiological and anatomical aspects of medicine. However to teach physics fluid mechanics thermodynamics and high level mathematics to a doctor is a lot of schooling. People think engineers plug in equations and they work. It’s more than that ; it’s about mathematical literacy. Coding is just a tool, but requires a lot of trainning to be able to apply it. for example, let’s say you’re trying to build a device that try’s to measure EKG. You need to know graduate level digital signal processing ((electrical engineering) , how filter out your signal of interest, which requires you to understand Transformers. Then you need program the hardware with these algorithms, which can be very complicated. You need to learn not alot software but embedded systems Which is a branch of computer science. With that in mind, they also have to understand the biology , physiological and anatomical concepts for the human body to ensure it’s correctly reading EKG. To be a good engineer ; It’s not something you can just pick up and learn online. Some people have to go back to school because it involves alot fundamentals and conceptual fundementas that an online course doesn’t cover. In addition , you need industry experience so that you can become aware of practical application

If you have doubt of going into medicine after having worked in the field, please look for something else. If you think Comp sci is the way to go but you never had the initiative to learn outside a classroom environment, look for something else. Also take into account helping people is an amazing endeavor but the bureaucracy, bad apples, and sick people will make you hate your life + add the surmounting debt. Why have all doctor KZbinrs quit medicine? Is it just a coincidence? You don't have to be passionate to make money in life and you kinda of like programming/are good at it anyways. Most people work jobs regardless of whether they like it or not over a 13 year timespan your whole viewpoint could change, shit it could change within 3 years while in uni. Think in 13 years you could be a millionaire from tech, a chamath papillaya, a naval ravikant think.......

Choosing to go to medical school doesn't lock you into dedicating the entire rest of your life to just being a cog in the medical machine; a medical degree gives you a level of legitimacy and flexibility to do a lot in the future, and make serious impact in an extremely important sector. I myself am not sure if I'd want to spend the entirety of my life dedicated to clinical practice or might want to spend some time using my training for something else. While what you say is true, it doesn't mean that medicine doesn't have its perks. We will always need doctors anyways.

Those who put in slight effort and make everything. You waste the best parts of your life working yourself into a grave for a hospital with 500k debt. A doctors only perk is a 6 fig salary in his 30s and prestige(being shown off as a trophy to other people). If your family is wealthy and can handle the debt and stress I guess you could do it. Overall I just feel there are many opportunities especially with your own youtube channel, social media, tech etc... especially if you finish uni in 3-4 years lots of time to think and figure things out.
