Despite the 48's two big drawbacks- it's vertebrae crunching suspension from the factory and it's tiny fuel tank-this Honda owner had a total blast riding this rocket of a bike! The H-D is raw and fast, with it's vibration. I'm impressed with the Sportster 1200.

That's why You buy a bigger bike, My Superglide holds 5 gal. You can go 250 miles if You want, but I don't mind stopping after 150 miles. Now however I'm getting older and would like to downsize to a nice sporty, I don't go more than 100 miles on most rides anymore anyway. And the 48 looks like so much fun to ride! like a high powered minibike! I'd love to have one!

Major improvement happened in the 2004 models Sportsters when HD rubber mounted the motor and adopted the oval pistons and lighter push rods from Buell. Riding quality improved many times over, except for the stock seat which is only good for short distances.

Got my 09 883L with 600 miles for $3500. Changed to a tracker bar and added 2 inches to my rear suspension with 13 inch progressive shocks and gave it a roadster look (minus the chopped fender). The price was right, and I was looking to get into motorcycling, and haven't had a day I didn't enjoy it. I did also change the factory seat for a mustang seat and replaced the halogen headlight with the daymaker.

The 1200/883 evo engine came out in 86. 84 and 85 was still the ironhead, which had been in production since 1957. The big twin Evos came out in 84, but depending on the model like the FXWG you could get a Shovelhead, but an FXR/FXST would have the Evo. Another tidbit, the 84-5 FXST and FXWG were available with a 4 speed kickstart held over from the shovelhead.

HD 48 is what made me attracted to bikes, I'm more a car guy old jeeps an all that are my thing. I always wanted to have a HD 48 but here in India HD price sky rocketed like 18-20% from 2020. A new HD 48 costs near about a new 2022 gen3 Hayabusa and Hayabusa is a lot cheaper to maintain here, and Suzuki makes Hayabusa here. $40 or something near is what you pay for a service of Hayabusa, except parts like oil & filters all that. Although HD 48 is my love but I'm considering Hayabusa. I might one on my next B day.
