The word change has always been an important part of my life, from when I first read the novel Parable of the Sower in high school and Octavia Butler’s words rung in my mind as though a bell were struck: “All that you touch, you change. All that you change, changes you. The only lasting truth is change. God is change.”
At age 18 I boarded the greyhound bus from smokey hellhole that was my life, born and raised, in Los Angeles and traveled to Northern California to attend community college. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, but I knew that i wanted to do it far from LA. From there I transferred to San Francisco State University, and from there to Graduate School at the University of Arizona, and from there to teach English as a professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China where lived, with some transience to Wuhan and Nanjing for a total of 2 years before I had a longing to return home.

There are forces in our lives out of our control, but that does not mean you have no control. Even when it feels as though the wheel has completely been ripped from your hands, in ways both big and small, you can still work towards steering the direction of your life. Magic: The Gathering teaches us this. We cannot control what is in our opponent's hand, but we can both prepare for it through knowledge and anticipation. Maybe we can't stop our creatures from getting removed, or our spells countered, but as the game progresses we keep fighting and in the long run, and many games, when we look at the big picture, we see steady improvement. We get better. I moved because this job is what I want to do, and I won't let forces outside my control take it away from me. I have so much more I want to do, and I hope very much you enjoy some of the new content that i have planned for the future. To days to come.

Thank you, Professor. I found your words to be deeply moving, and exactly what I needed to hear today. Your channel has helped my brother and I come together and learn about Magic the Gathering. Your videos are always wonderfully researched and help me to understand strategies about the game, to play carefully, and enjoy myself more. I wasn't expecting an inspirational story, but as a small business owner who sometimes gets bogged down in my part time work, I welcome the push. I find it hard to get going sometimes, but it's messages like yours that remind me why I started in the first place: exploring unfamiliar territory, diving into the unknown, shedding the comforts of a sure thing, and learning all the while. You hit all the important points. I will continue to support your videos and your company. You do great work.

You teach us about embracing your love and passion for not just this game, but the community that it creates. Like many others this title had me very very worried, but you brought a very needed message. Just like you looking up at the sky, I am looking across the production floor at jobs I hate working on, in a place I know I stand no chance of advancing. While I dare not dream to have the amazing switch that you did, this was a much needed push to realizing that I need to grab my life and get moving to something better. Thank you from my whole heart.

Such a fine example of fear of change, of the unknown, beaten. And I bet not once but many times both in the past and in the present. I don't personally know the professor but when I started playing magic a few years ago his channel was probably the first one I suscribbed to and is now the only one I really follow. It was not the dexterity of his words or the fashionable mane he sports but the fact that I saw true love and passion for the game and that it meant more than just collecting and battling what has pulled me here and made me stay. I feel there is more than meets the eye about you my esteemed professor but I thank you for putting yourself out there for us, for the players and thank you for giving to us what is best of you through your channel. God speed!

I seriously freaked out at the title and the somber opening, and thought you were stopping producing content entirely. I was shocked, as I was immediately saddened by the thought and I normally don't have that kind of reaction to things. I find most Magic content creators to be insufferable- Save you, and Loading Ready Run. You leaving KZbin would be like the end of an era, and I even got a friend of mine into Magic by watching one of your videos back in late 2013/2014 (some time around there) while at work. You're stable, level-headed, and I respect your reviews more than most anyone else's on the Internet when it comes to my favorite hobby. Keep up the good content, and don't scare me like this again lol.

A good reviewer does not make a good creator. Heck even the famous and arguably most well respected critics of all time, Ebert, was not known for his hand in films. In fact here are a few of his works, Beneath the Valley of the Ultra Vixens and Up!, no not Up, Up! this film involves big boobed Nazis. No neither of those films are ironic deep thought provoking satire of porn, they are straight up B rated soft core porn flicks. Not to say he could come up with a good card game, just saying it is very dang unlikely.

Please, don't make excuses for where your Patreon money is going towards. Sure, it will go towards props, boxes, cards, sleeves, etc. But it will also go towards your own personal living expenses. Very few people complain that a meal at a restaurant costs four to five times what the individual ingredients do, because the people making and serving it need the money to eat, to pay for rent, to go to the cinema, to buy Magic cards, to LIVE. Creating content such as you do is no different. If you can make enough money, not just for the content itself, but for your rent, your meals, your family, and even a brand new car, then do it.

Your vids always give me something, in fact I've started following you before I had an interest in MTG. I don't know what it is, but you feel...(and by this i don't mean "you seem like", i mean "you are so much like this you make me feel it) you feel like a person, a person with sense and heart, and in this world it's just a great thing to be and to make people feel. You feel like a good person, it's pleasing hearing you share part of you, and in part it's a honor. Thank you Prof, you have my esteem and respect

I wish there was more that I could offer to you other than a sub and a thumbs up for this is what I can afford as a college student. Prof you are the "pillar of our community" and I thank you for your constant inspiration for times are mentally tough right now. I wish to actively choose to change my life an not let it change me and as William James once said "My first act of free will shall be to believe in free will". So I thank you for yet again another day you have been able to enlightened and motivate me to continue pushing through. Thank you for supporting this community, for it is a great one.

Hey Prof! Congrats on moving to Oregon. My dad lives in Medford and I have other family in Gold Beach. Just curious where about you settled in Oregon? Also what is your new LGS in the area? I am going to be coming out to Oregon next month and want to bring a few decks along to get in some FNM.

I discovered your channel around only a few months ago, but your contet had a big impact on my life. You got me into Magic, from you I learned about cube, draft and most of all commander. You thaught me how to be a Magic player, how to become better, how to work on myself, how to improve my way of thinking. And I am eternally grateful for that. Best wishes to you and your family Professor, keep up the good work :3

Professor, Thank you for this video... This came at a time where I find myself worried and scared to death of change. Back in June I got laid off from my full time job and have spend the time since honing my skills to learn and practice in a whole new career field. This change has terrified me, the job hunt has terrified me and the uncertainty of my future terrifies me. Though content like yours and Wedges and The Command Zone has kept my spirits high and helped keep me entertained during my free time (Which is quite a bit in between scouring job boards and online Coding classes.) Anyway I'm not trying to write an essay of the woes of my life... I just wanted you to know that I appreciate your content. It's inspired me over the past few years to make content of my own and that means a lot. I look forward to your many many years of content to come and can't wait to see and experience the changes of Tolarian Community College along the way. Thanks, Corey/Nerd Werks

It's been a long time since I've been involved in the magic community, but I do still stop by the channel every now and then because the quality content it provides still crosses my mind time to time. I stumbled upon this video today, and I'm glad to see that the standard for quality hasn't changed a bit. I wish you good luck in your endeavors, professor!

It feels so inspiring to see you grow into your power. How you've grown. And to hear you make steps that help you serve the world and reflect the inherent capacities to do so to each of us feels like you became a blessing Elder, to show the ways of the world to the young.

Congratulations on the paths you chosen, professor. I only started to follow your channel after I saw how friendly you were to people on GP São Paulo. I do not regret subscribing here, even tough I do not watch all your content. This is a great video, and has as much to do with Magic as life itself has. It's intertwined in a beautiful way. So, is your work. Thanks for your wisdom, the only one, you only, can offer. I'm sure there are a lot of people, like me, that appreciate, and will keep to appreciate for years to come!

I found your channel a few years ago and enjoy most these videos. I ended up wanting to meet you because I appreciated how real you seemed to be and your seemed like good people. I've been friends with Emma for going on 10+ years, and when I found out that she was dedicating that much of her time into helping you out, it confirmed preconceived notions about you. You're good people, Prof. Keep doing what you're doing and we'll continue to be here.

I honestly don’t know how I got to this channel, I’m from Chile (South America) and had never seen something about magic before, I had started playing magic not so long ago and mostly just to help a friend jajaja. But since I got to this channel, I’ve loved it. Thanks for all your work profesor and thanks a lot for videos like this one, it’s great to see the other side of things. Hope you keep the great content! :D
