I work from home now, but before COVID, my regular bike commute was a 12 mile round-trip into downtown Portland on my MTB. I much prefer riding this bike especially when it was wet, icy or the streets were strewn with leaves in the fall. It’s no fun, slipping and coming off your bike and with the 2.4 inch tires I felt so much safer.

For sure! That extra width and more aggressive tread makes a big difference in bad conditions. We get a lot of freeze/thaw cycles here so come winter I’m on a studded fatbike. It’s a bit slow compared to a hybrid but sooooo stable. Thanks for the comment and watching!

I remember I used to commute to work 27km away on an old beater of a mtb but with more suitable tires for tarmac because it was only tarmac. It was a bit elevation, but not too bad and I actually used less time pedaling to work than if I took the bus lmao. I used like 45min on bike and the bus took 1hr 5min so I even had time to shower and everything. Now I just live too far away from everything and no sidewalks at all so it's been some changes to say the least. Now I got a good full suspension that I only use in the mountains, and I got a hybrid bike that sadly doesn't get too much use anymore. Used that thing for years when I did not own any vehicles, so it's got a few miles on it as well. A lot more snow where I now live too, so snowshoes is a better bet most of the times.

That’s awesome! Lots of guys use old mtb’s as commuters. It would be fun to build a gravel bike using an old mtb frame. M I have a hybrid bike as well I converted to be a bit of a gravel bike that I’ll use when the trails are wet and I stick to tarmac. As well as gravel rides and I have a fatbike for winter use. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I also commute on an MTB. 8.5 miles each way. I can practice drop technique and bump jumps off curbs, and I don't need to true the wheels every other day.

If you want a cheap light that won't blind oncoming but still works well with a wide beam(better than these) check out the Infun GT200 light Novsight has a cheap self contained light, it's narrow beam light this, but way more distance It also has a dipped beam for oncoming With that fun, looks like a fun ass commute!

Thanks! Those look pretty good! The two bar lights I have are Lezyne LiteDrive 1000XL’s and I have a Niterider Lumina Boost 1000 on my helmet. I’m pretty happy with them and do a fair bit of night riding. I’m not terribly worried about the traffic since I’ll either point these down or turn them down if needed. For the trails I like a nice wide beam so that GT200 might fit the bill once the Lezynes need replacement. I do reallly like the Outboard lighting lights too, they’re just expensive. Thanks for watching and commenting with those recommendations!
@MichaelRobibaro

@@ivanmtb00 I'm sad to say I purchased and tried way to many lights.only ones better than those are the outbound lighting brand..or DiY route like 4x4 pod for off-road and sae/dot fog light via Baja designs and morimito 2 banger But for the pricey... Can't beat the first two I mentioned in my original post

Yeah I’m super lucky that way. If I stick to tarmac and do a straight shot I can make it into work in about 15-20min. Taking the long way to work it’s about 20-30min. For the most part I’ll go this way, other days I’ll take a different trail.

How's the elevation on the ride home? Ever have trouble lacking energy after a hard day of work?
@ivanmtb00
@ivanmtb00 Жыл бұрын
It’s about 100-110m (350ft) elevation on the way home and about 90-100m (300ft) heading to work. It can be rough on the way home some days but it’s not terrible. What can be bad is the wind, we usually get a west wind and it’s not uncommon to have 30km/h (20mph) winds with 50-60km/h (30mph) gusts. The other day I was riding into 100km/h (60mph) gusts. The way home is straight west so sometimes I get a boost into work when it’s to my back. But taking the wind head on is rough!

Do you use tires like the Continental Double Fighter, Continental Ruban, or Specialized Crossroads?
@ivanmtb00
@ivanmtb00 Жыл бұрын
On this bike I have Continental Kryptotal in the Enduro/Soft casing in a 2.4 width. My hardtail has the Schwable Hans Dampf’s. I’ll likely put the Kryptotals on that bike too. These tires don’t see a ton of tarmac other then the 10min ride to the trail or the 5 min ride from the trail and into work. Most mornings I’ll spend a good hour and a half on the trails before I go into work too. Thanks for watching and the comment!
@WStar4Life
@WStar4Life Жыл бұрын
@@ivanmtb00 mine is mostly asphalt so I have the 3 tires I mentioned. The Ruban is more rail trail oriented whereas the Double Fighter and the Crossroads are more for mostly pavement. I live in the city and use the stock Marin wheels for commuting and put on my RaceFace wheels with Kryptotals for when I go to the trails.
@ivanmtb00
@ivanmtb00 Жыл бұрын
@@WStar4Life the Kryptotals are a great tire! I just leave those on and ride to the trails. I’m only about a 10min/3km tarmac ride until I’m on dirt. Or I’ll drive the bike to the mountains and ride there. If I plan to stick to tarmac I’ll grab my Trek FX 1 with gravel tires.

On the way home I’ll take the same trail I climbed for the most part, I might venture off and do another one every now and then. Then I’ll climb up a more appropriate climbing trail. I usually go up one called Deer but sometimes I’ll take another one up.

You are panting towards the end, you sure you commute by bike every day?
@ivanmtb00
@ivanmtb00 Жыл бұрын
Haha it’s a decent climb and I have a hard time putting it in cruise control and sauntering up. I only have one speed and it’s as fast as I can go! Edit: the way I see it, the only way I’ll get in better shape is by always raising the bar, pushing myself harder. I could have thrown it in the granny gear and gone up, or taken the multipurpose pathway which is an easier climb then this route too.

America is definitely not built around bike commutes unless you live in the city. My guess is that the real reason you commute via mtb is that a car doesn't make financial sense let's just say lol.
@ivanmtb00
@ivanmtb00 Жыл бұрын
The car isn’t too bad, but it is financially better to ride. The main reasons I ride to work is because I can ride some local singletrack a bit more, exercise and just overall enjoyment.
