I would like to disagree.. I am an Indian who studies, worked and settled in Norway. Most of the challenges that you talked about are valid but easily overcome. And tbh I faced them at first. But with percivierece one can learn good level norsk in 6 months.. which is taught free and easy to get it Norwegian course. Followed by a job in university cafeteria or bookshop, learning tutuor centers "studass" , and while working towards a Degree of genuine interest. Jobs are easy in fields like Innovation, greentech and GenAI IT.

Yes but I did say in the beginning that I needed a visa that will extend my stay so that I’m able to do the things you mentioned above. I only had less than a year in my visa and I did not have time to do all that. And I’m sure you know that jobs in university, in a bookshop etc does not guarantee you a working visa.
@picklenickil5 ай бұрын
@@ashleydado Maybe there's where I would have done things a bit differently. And no, work in cafeteria doesn't get you work permit, but working as a foot safety specialist does, specifically ISO 9001 for quality inspection, assistant librarians get work visa similar to assistant professorsi think, and student assistant can help NAV in teaching disabled kids calculus( I did this) gets you work visa. VISA application processors such as UDI more or less listen to educational institutions like god will, leading to scenario's where people on visit visa have gotten transformed to work permit in couple of weeks.. damn in case of my friend saumitra it was days. And if you are able to show that you will make significant contribution in terms of publications , resources or service It's somewhat personal and anecdotal but happens all the time. My story: I came here because my professor read my paper and invited me in norway. Had a fun 'month' of fadder 'uke' , and basically did no research during this time. Worked for barely 2 weeks, but during that time pointed out the significant difference between research infrastructure between India and Norway. Was ready with packed bags and bundle of memories and a severe hangover a few day before my flight back home.. Got a call from my now colleague, saving to extend my stay.. they will talk to the university.. got an extension from udi the same day as 'applying' counts as stay permit. In a month had a job seeking visa, on emergency basis. Figured out a good living/work balance in 6 months and applied for a researcher position in the same department, believe it not.. I did not give an interview for this. They said the proposal was enough. And then quit it. After another 2 months, but stayed in university part time while working with a startup, in colab with ntnu. In right time I applied for work permit, got it.. next year I think I would be eligible for a PR.. but I dread giving the norskB1 exam. I talk with my keyboard in code and keystrokes and am very very VERY INTROVERTED. So never really practiced Norwegian tbh

@picklenickil thank you for this. maybe other people can take note of this! did you have prior professional experience and bachelor’s/master’s studies? although this sounds like a good plan. i was only a fresh high school graduate with zero university and professional experience especially since the pandemic, which were very important years for me academically, did not give me room to accumulate experience. because of this, the likelihood of companies wanting to hire me was very low. no institution wants to hire me for professional work. especially considering that my norweigan wasn’t as proficient back then. the whole premise of this video is that i was not able to study because i had zero university and professional experience to admit me into an institution, unfortunately. and from then, it was just a domino effect with job rejections, visa rejections etc. But I’m very glad you had found a way to live in Norway! 💖

Dealing with visas as a non-EU person can take time and effort. In Europe, finding a degree in English can also be difficult because they only have it available for some degrees, and I search for the degree Ashley is doing. We only have them in Finnish. I highly recommend European countries for university or college studies, but the downside is the language requirements (if you haven't learned it before or have never used it), it can be tricky to get in. I wish you all the best, Ashley!

From Norway, it had to be done. A lot of studies with a lot of foreigners, like psychology and medicine, didn't educate enough Norwegians so we had a major gap in the workforce in the health service especially leading to a lot of people getting too little treatment and people being overworked.

Dang, it sucks that skyrocketing tuition fees in other countries are forcing students to seriously look into countries that offer lowered/free tuition from EU countries, which only makes these countries suffer by making entrance to universities more competitive and a greater percentage of graduates move back to their home countries essentially causing an education drain for the communities within those countries.
@sorgutentarer5 ай бұрын
Why would we pay taxes in Europe to subsidise the education of a foreigner from Peru whom we dont owe anything? Foreign students mostly go back to their country without paying back the country that gave them free education. Stay in your country. Europe for European taxpayers.

What do you think of life in Stockholm as compared to Oslo? Somehow Norway is the only nordic country I haven't been to, I would think it's quite similar? These sort of uni admin catch 22s are suuuper frustrating, glad you managed to start studying here!
@ashleydado Жыл бұрын
It’s pretty similar! But Stockholm is hugeeee. everything feels so fast paced as compared to Oslo, it’s literally so relaxing. Oslo doesn’t feel like a capital city even hahah but culture wise it’s really similar! I think the only thing that differs is how both cities flow!

I see a lot of comments asking questions about Norway that went unanswered. So i will share my experience with moving to norway for studies so people can get an idea of a different case. So I am currently in my bachelor (intergrated master, which means 5-year bachelor degree) in mechanical engineer and environmental engineering from Greece (part of EU, thus I have european visa). I applied for an erasmus internship while i was on my sixth to seventh year of my bachelor (in Greece you can and it is normal to delay your graduation because of the way the universities work and the economical issues force you to delay it). I was accepted by a research institute in Oslo, which they were unable to pay me any salary due to them not getting an intership allowance from their higher ups (i send them mail asking for an intership they didn't have a listing or something). Even though i got accepted they asked me about the money i would get from erasmus, my economical status and how possible was it for me to support my stay. They were very concrete about the cost of living and they will make sure you can 100% afford ypur time there before they completely accept your application. In the meantime they made a submission for an intership funding which eventually got accepted but in the meantime I had to work here in Greece to make sure i had the spare money for my staying in Norway. Overall Norway is a country that takes a very few amount of people, usually are people that are of higher education (I had a very loaded CV in research as an undergraduate and that's why i got accepted, otherwise no matter what grades I had they wouldn't tale especially by just asking them without a listing for job). They are also very aware of their economical situation and how absurd it is for foreigners (even for other Scandinavians) and they want to be sure that if you get there you wont quit for economical reasons.

I try my best to answer all questions as much as I can! Sometimes it takes time for me to reply. But thank you for sharing your experience! I think your perspective and experience is as important. Going back a few years in school works for some. I went to school with classmates that had already finished high school in their country and then went to my school for three years and graduated. Sure they were a few years older but it helped them tremendously in language learning and they also graduated from University. It's not a waste and you have plenty of time. It just feels that way because you are so young. Life experience is something money cannot buy. I'm glad it worked out in Sweden for you, though.

i think if you did some further digging, there is this business school called BI norway, and it works well in that the fees are lower but everyone has to pay (even eu citizens), and it is conducted in english with bachelor's having low(er) requirements due to the fact that everyone pays.
