The big fin squids, AKA Magnapinna can grow up to 40 ft. I believe I saw somewhere, and they've recently caught footage of it attacking using its tentacles, so it's no longer thought that they drag them passively but it's been seen that they're actually somehow able to manipulate them actively and must be adept hunters. So yeah, even more terrifying.

As a marine ecologist I have to endorse this message: The ocean is terrifying.
@brinettevalorie45542 жыл бұрын
Honestly (story time, btw), I use to think that the ocean was neat. It is neat, but in my elementary days, I was forcing myself to a point where I should like everything about it. Criticisms were not neglected though. That's not exactly a bad thing (the "liking" part, but the "forcing" definitely is), but I got an underlying feeling that there was and is something ominous in there waiting. Unsurprisingly, my young nerves turned out to be right. Terribly sorry I doubted myself as a kid lol. Finally, I previously wanted to be a marine biologist, but now, being a geologist seem more interesting and fitting for me instead.

If you're not keen on watching for things above, I'd advise you to avoid the shades in case a drop bear got the jump on you. Without the shade, you'd be exposed to the sun and dive bombing magpies however, so it's best that you wear a hat because a bruise is better than an open wound. When you're out with the homies, a good rule of thumb is that if it sounds stupid, it probably is. Especially if it involves dark holes, size notwithstanding, or suspicious bodies of water you can't see the bottom of. If you keep to the sidewalk or anything close to civilization, you should be fine for the most time. If you're the adventurous type, just make sure you have access to the ER and have a company to take a picture of the jellyfish/scorpion/spider/snake that bit you to increase your chance of survival. Oh and it goes without saying to make sure you both don't get stung at the same time at the very least. Have fun on your vacation!

As my oceanography professor said “when you enter the ocean, you enter the food chain…and you’re no longer on the top.” PS: so cool hearing everyone’s responses. I prefer staying on the boat 🚤 and watching the sea monsters from afar. Edit: A couple people have asked but I don’t remember his name; he was a surfer and professor at UC Santa Cruz waaaaayy back in last last century. He would also love showing “before and after” slide shows of rich people who built their homes on sand dunes. 😀

I stood on a stonefish when I was 10 years old and the pain rendered me unconscios after about 5 minutes, no matter what drugs I was given at the hospital the mind altering pain was ever present, they put me in a sort of coma where I was apparently asleep but I remember dreaming of nothing but the most horrific pain immersing my entire soul the entire time, I've snapped bones and ruptured a testicle since and nothing can compare to stonefish venom, even now I still (I'm now 30) get these twitches every now and then that are about 50% the level of the original pain that last half a second that happen 2 or 3 times with about 2 seconds between "pulses" at the old injury site and they leave me sweating and with a raised heartbeat for a few minutes, I also often dream about when it happened and the pain in the dream is like it's happening again, so that's fun

If you haven't yet, here's an animal fact you should cover: This one is about how ants can sense when an ant dies by smelling the chemicals a dead ant releases. Then, the ant will drag the body to a dead body pile. Scientists have experimented on their responses to the chemicals by applying it to live ants. The result? The ants would drag the live ants to the dead body pile, or if they had the chemical, they would think they "died" and would go to the body pile and just sit there.
