Personal view: I worked as a DJ for a few years (private events only and rarely a short residency) I never enjoyed it... most people don't believe me when I say... I enjoy live streaming much more... why? Dead simple... MUSIC... I play the kind I like... despite the music varying based on taste... but 99% of clubbers are clueless when it comes to music and I am not there to entertain a bunch of people who are out for the liquid...

Im a turntablist and do technical mixed with dnb and fuck playing out i use turntables etc and just finding venues i can set up in is a pain in the ass , ill battle / competitions and i have done a few show case sets at mini festivals , i cant even begin to imagine doing a wedding it must be soul crushing dropping track after track you dont really like ..give me a day job over that anyday , i just work in the hydroponics business and make more cash than i would djing full time anyway . Im happy where im at ... Dont get me wrong though if i did well in a big comp like DMCs or redbull freestyle you end up getting global bookings off the back to then yeah i would go full time and tour then

The loneliness thing is right man. I always tell younger djs be prepared to be on your own A LOT. They always look at me like I’m mad then after a few months they get it. We are passengers in other people’s nights out and despite what we are doing being great fun it is still work. Having done this for twenty years now the amount of birthdays, christenings, weddings etc that you miss is wild. Always be mindful of trying to also have a life and that a night off won’t be the end of the world.

Great video I have been a promoter for 20+ years which is what brought me into DJing. This is a great video as promoting for your own takes a lot of work. I currently do an event every 4 - 6 weeks and it takes every fibre of my body to sell out that event. I have also taken bookings for some quick cash and yes the energy used to do them still costs you. I keep my Friday's open for club gigs and my Saturdays open for bigger events (privates, weddings, etc) which works for me. Great tips as usual

Wow you hit the nail on the head… been DJing since I was 14yrs old.. started on vinyl to CD’s and now digital. DJing around London playing on pirate stations, it takes a lot out of you. But I did not take it seriously like some people do, it was a hobby for me, (expensive hobby). Especially buying vinyl, around at Clapham junction and Brixton. Now I mobile dj with a residency every Saturday and dj Fridays too. In week not a chance work, 9-to-5, and like yourself got the little ones. Love your content keep up the good work.👍🏾💯

Just liked and subscribed mate. Brilliant video. You've nailed it. Add onto that wedding and events, which is leaving around 4.30, getting in 2.30. Knackered. 2 or 3 times a week and working....... your work/life balance goes out of whack. Not spending enough time with family & friends etc... Nice to hear someone telling it how it really is. Look forward to seeing more of your vids. Respect brother. 👊

Very mature decision making. I used to try and DJ clubs as much as I could, but realized I could make 3-4 times more doing one third of the time. I prefer concerts/festivals and mobile. That way promoters know that they have to pay more because I am like a unicorn 🦄 Releasing music is better promotion than club residencies in my experience. Enjoy your kids!

You can't "create" a DJ career. What do you have to sell? Do a Twitch channel and build your following thee, NO REQUESTS. You're building your brand. If your following gets big enough they will pay to see you live. Only do special events once you develop your brand and have your following. First and foremost you have full time job. If that's your primary source of income then that's what you have to dedicate your time to. If you hate your job, QUIT and DJ full time. It's a touch decision do what your gut tells you to do. I did my first mix on an Technic SLB 100 belt driven turntable. But I've always had a career in IT. It never crossed my mind to abandon my career for DJ'ing. Right now, I'm seeing DJ'ing as a fun retirement option. Who knows how it turns out in the end for me. Keep your priorities first and your ambitions second. In the end it will work out.

Having the luxury of just "downloading some more". Lol... I remember the days of going to the record shops evenings and weekends for vinyls and then cds. But Got to love the technology. First off, love this vid, you are speaking knowledge over here!! I'd really appreciate it, if you make a vid about what happened when you launched your own night. I started my own monthly night in October and it's been a rollercoaster, ups and downs. The most shocking thing, is how I too, had all these friends and followers DMing me that they will show up, then boom, dead club, I'm just playing to the bartenders and staff, lol I am building a bit of a following, but I'm not sure how long I can keep doing this, until it pays off, or if it even will... I recently partnered up with another Dj, so I'm no longer bored djing by myself and he also is helping promote. It's definitely better than before, but it's not easy. So yea, I'd like to hear about your experience, sounds similar to what I'm going through now. ;)

This reminded me of shark tank a lot of times entrepreneurs go on the show and say this is my life my business yet they have a day job and every time the sharks tell them to pick the business they’re trying to build instead of helping build someone else’s business and being a employee. I quit my day job years ago and I sleep in every day it’s so key to not being exhausted for dj gigs.

I generally dj solely for pleasure these days with money as a bonus. Many times I overcharge for gigs I don't really want on the chance the person booking will turn it down as my get out clause. Having a day job helps in this regard. Having been djing since the 80s up till now, I've seen the pitfalls and am no longer inspired in totally going out of my way organising events from scratch for people that gas you up prior, then don't turn up and support, particularly as you're not in a local dj clique. I'm happy with my one-off gigs where I generally play the music my patrons and I enjoy.

I hear everything your saying bro, it’s not so obvious from the outside looking in ..I work in house music production under an artist name and know a lot of touring DJs well, guys that play for labels like defected and they are zombies, surviving off 2-3 hours sleep an night for days at a time flying in between countries just hours after the last gig ..They look at their schedule for the next 6 months and go wow , when am I gonna sleep..So yeah control your schedule especially if your in demand or it will kill you , we lost a few DJs last year for this reason ..But Great advice for people coming into the industry .

Hey dj's if youre dj'ing 4-5 days a week, you should not have to have a day job, check your prices. If the gig is not paying what you need, dont take it! Also, set yourself apart by getting into production and making remixes to get higher paying gigs. It's not easy, but can be done. Peace.

As DJ you can earn more as an Artist who is producing music it's much harder but it depends on person and personal preferences and being honest. That's my opinion . Maybe working like DJ can become boring especially in specific conditions like being DJ in Dubai where you can earn money you will never earn as producer but in Dubai there is no freedom and it's DJ on demand and i can understand that and similar conditions .

Same here! I'm 57 with long term steady job in Civil Engineering but love the passion of EDM music and possibility of performing at music festivals, weddings and social events. Not looking so much for residencies at my age and since have good full time $ however would play clubs on special guest DJ nights. A lot of not wanting residencies has to do with probably most of us that cannot afford to live in expensive city centers close to the "action". I can't imagine how expensive London is these days. I live in Austin, Texas metro and the city center very expensive to live even 15 miles out.

I just recently started one and it made djing funner, we get breaks and we vibe off each other to work the crowd. We don't make big bucks when we dj clubs or bars together, but that leads us to booking our own private events like weddings, where we dj alone and charge 5 times more than what we get at a bar or club.
