Thanks for the tour. I planted peas and spinach yesterday. I found a small hoop and sheet plastic system from the dollar store I'm trying out. I'm going to try planting some carrots and lettuce this week with some fleece over top. I never used to plant out so early. Thanks for your ideas. It gives me some gumption to try and not worry about failing. :)

@@enshalla123 I put it over a row of peas. It is still up, so far so good. My peas haven't germinated yet. Neither have my uncovered peas. It's actually a deterrent for my dog not to run in the garden. ;) That little turkey walked all through the spinach I planted.

I've been told that there aren't any rules, so we do what works for us after trial and error. In the UK, probably for many in the more Northern regions, a lot of us like to get plants started early. We grow Peppers and Tomatoes (hopefully) because we need a jump start on the season, blight can appear before Tomatoes are ripe etc. I agree that many seeds can be sown outdoors directly but another reason I like to start plants is that weeds often overtake young seedlings - which makes weeding a pain. Hope your Snow is gone for good this season. All the best -- Elly

Hope this year is better than last , got some good ideas we are ready to try. Last year - frost until middle of June -transplants came up and stopped growing - direct seeding surpassed transplants within 4 weeks , that was a lot of extra work we are not looking forward to this year

I planted twelve 4' rows of a variety of vegetables on April 11th and just now I laid a large sheet of heavy plastic over several of the rows (it wasn't big enough to cover them all). It was just a sheet of plastic that a washing machine came wrapped in. I set 3 flower pots in the middle of a few of the rows to create a tent effect so that water will run off to the sides if it rains instead of weighing the plastic down too heavily on top of the rows. Within a few minutes the inside of the plastic started to fog up as the heat was magnified and moisture started condensing. Greg, have you ever experienced too much heat building up when creating a micro-climate at this time of year? It is currently 5°C outside here in Eastern Ontario and it's supposed to go up to 11°C later today.
@eldonelder72545 жыл бұрын
I went out a few minutes ago to check the temperature under the plastic sheet on my garden. It's 10°C (50°F) outside and under the plastic it's a steamy 43°C (110°F).

Does it matter how thick the plastic is? Do you have japanese knotweed on your land? We just bought a house/land in November and discovered the above mentioned invasive. It is putting a damper on me doing much of any gardening. But I already started seedlings the 'harder' way. LOL With the inside lights and such. Thanks for the reminder of the fan.

I finished planting my raised beds with cold hearty plants, kale, chard, onions, carrots, beets, peas, parsnips and favs beans. I covered in between the rows with.paper and mulch. I covered the beds with plastic fencing to keep the leafs from blowing away but for now not with plastic sheets. Since its not going below zero for foreseeable future and its raining all weekend and I want the beds to get lots of wonderful rain. I guess what I saying is if we don't get frost for 2 or a more weeks and we get some warm days does it make sense covering with plastic sheets and risking over heating the seedlings once they germinate? Temps are looking like high teens in the days and high single digits at night?
@maritimegardening48875 жыл бұрын
I think you've got the right idea. Have to make adjustments for your climate of course. Still getting below zero at night here, and conditions have been dismal - no sun!

I'm sure you've seen are have tried this. People have doubled the clear plastic, had two layers with air space in between them. I'm not sure why they do it, but maybe it generates more heat, I don't know, just thought I'd share.
@maritimegardening48875 жыл бұрын
Oh yes I'm aware of the technique. It holds more heat because the air pocket provides insulation. If I had more sunlight I'd do it here.

@@maritimegardening4887 Yes the temperature is way to high for this time of the year and it promises to be a very nice year indeed.
