After a lot of self-talk, I realized that I actually love studying. The act of studying itself gave me a sense of fulfillment, of, being able to immerse in the vast pool of knowledge, full of stuff I have never known of, which I found so novel and so incredible. But I'm still a student and recently I have been asking myself that question, whether if grades really matter. Yes, high grades make me feel better and approved, but no, cause when i got bad grades, I started to hate myself and hate studying, which is so horrifying.

I think a lot of ppl share your sentiments. I love learning out of my own volition, reading voluntarily. But when I have to worry about being graded for it, the enjoyment vanishes. I think it’s why there are ppl who try to find the little things that they enjoy, are passionate enough about that they can focus on and forget that they’re even being graded.

I hate studying, but whenever I don't study, I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Even though I don't get much sleep because of it, and my mental health is down the drain, I am pulled towards studying. I don't know if it's because I've been taught that 'study good, bad grades bad', or it's just because I feel worthless if I can't do everything right, even if it's a tiny detail that's not even significant. Even though I'm good at my classes, I feel terrible that I wasn't the best, that I was worthless. So I'm in an endless cycle of studying because I'm worthless, getting less sleep, and getting anxious, and being in a shitty mood most of the time, putting up a front so nobody worries about me (I hate bothering other people, and confrontation), and even though I'm in the top of the class, I feel like I'm still a piece of shit. So I study to get better, and the cycle repeats itself. I know it's probably not a good idea to vent on the internet about how I feel, but if I talk to anyone about not getting good grades, I feel like they'd treat me like I'm subhuman, just because I can't get good grades all the time, while sacrificing my mental health. I think I have something wrong with me, I shouldn't be stressing about keeping up with the scores I get, but here I am. TLDR: I have a hate relationship with studying, but my thoughts keep me from living how I want, forcing me to study.

I totally agree with you. With every subject I know exactly what type of quesions they will ask. I know what they want you to learn, but I only learn what I know is gonna be the most helpful on the test. I procrastinate a lot and work my ass of the day before I have a test or have to finish an assignment. If learing was like a game then learing random interesting things from youtube or books or other random sources would be an open world game, and school would be a linear repetitive game. School feels like an endless repetitive stressfull forced competition. I usually score really good, but since januari I just lost the motivation. I have a hell alot of assignments that should have been finished days ago and I have just become a mess. It's not just school tho. I feel like social media and school have made me this fucked up being. I'm way to worried about prestations and what people think about me that I have just become this messed up piece of shit. @@GoldenArchangel_1 that’s harsh, especially since most of the doctors, nurses, and scientists who have put endless work in their careers to get where they are at are literally the ones exhausting themselves in a 24 hour shift to save people right now. So, we’re they also brainwashed by the system too? No, obviously not, they cared about creating a change whether it was small or big and in my opinion, if I live a life of anger towards school then in the end, it’s I who will suffer not the education system. Does the education system suck and needs to change? Absolutely, but to just say to “throw it all away,” is completely wrong since generations of folks have fought for their rights to be able to afford and attend a school. (Don’t mean any harm and this is just my opinion, so please don’t think that I am trying to attack you for yours! 😅)

as a highschool student, I don't feel like I've earned the right to say a single thing about grades. Nonetheless, I agree with this. I've found nothing but stress, pain, and sleep deprivation in my schooling. It slows down my writing, cuts into my daily life, and causes me breakdowns in the middle of enjoying a nice and fun video game with my friends. Sure, a student's purpose is to learn. But what exactly am I learning? Is my constant cheating through tests learning? Is my panic cramming for a test just to forget it all afterwards learning? If anything, I'm learning that one of the biggest flaws of humanity is its inability to change. Our school systems in America have remained the same ever since they came into being, which was centuries ago. Over my life, I've dropped art, dropped guitar, dropped piano, and even dropped friendships, all for what? A number to appease my parents? A number that will supposedly lead me towards a better life? Well if this number is so powerful, then why can't it give me something that I wished for? Why can't I catch a break after I receive that report card? I'm given the results of my previous hardship, just to be thrown into another. All of this, and I secure nothing. Even if I get full marks on everything, I am guaranteed nothing, I am ensured nothing, and I have gained nothing. I do not come out of each year smarter, I do not come out of each year brighter, and I do not come out of each year more creative. As the years go by, my smarts, my sanity, and my creativity goes with them. Thank you for reading my rant. I'll go back to stressing out now.

We go to school to “learn”, but in the end, your success is based off of how well you remember this pointless stuff. Most math that’s more difficult than simple addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division, will *never* be used. We won’t need to understand the whole human anatomy to get a job. We won’t need to know advanced physics to succeed. They waste our time with this stuff, when they could at least be teaching us how to manage money, how to pay taxes, how to raise a child. They tell you that everyone has flaws, it’s okay, but when you show one you’re treated like a screw up? In the end, it doesn’t even matter if you get a high mark on a paper. On a different note, thanks for the support on this comment. This had 5 likes a few days after I checked it, and it’s randomly blown up. This is the most supported comment i’ve ever had

High school needs to have mandatory classes on what you just stated. We cannot learn how to pay taxes, manage loans, raise a family, or hell even car insurance information, just by sitting in class learning about how long it takes a damn door to close (yes I learned that in physics). This irrelevant shit gets you nowhere, like ah yes, I know terminal velocity and can calculate projectile velocity, but in the end it's just irrelevant garbage. I can't think of any place that you'd need to know that (maybe NASA but).

Yep, my old history teacher did that. Our classes ended up being her asking a question, no one answering because if they get it wrong she'll give you a blunt put-down and humiliate you for getting it wrong (it didn't even have to be 'wrong' either, she would do that if it wasn't the answer she wanted), then the same 2 pupils would always answer the questions and my teacher would be actually confused as to why no one wanted to speak out, despite several people telling her bluntly that she was rude. Even me, someone who has extreme anxiety speaking in public, would try answering the questions eventually because we'd sit there for genuinely 10-15 mins in silence most lessons waiting for someone to answer and it was painful. Keep in mind that this was my A-level class meaning we were 17-18 years old, not children (Not that it's okay to behave like that with children either). Absolutely kills the subject of history when you don't feel able to discuss a topic and give your own views on things, they just want you to regurgitate arguments, no room for individuality. There are better teachers out there, but it's a shame that education doesn't reward them, and it incentivises the behaviour of teachers like my old one.

I had a chemistry teacher last year, and I'm pretty sure she's been fired. She was always saying that we were "stupid" for not understanding what she was explaining, yet everyone always failed in her classes, like 27 out of 30 students in all of the 3 classes she was teaching (in mine 16 out of 21, me included). She was always, ALWAYS yelling and humiliating everyone. We were all scared to ask questions for that. And also because, for example, this one time, when a girl said "excuse me, I didn't understand the last sentence you said, could you please explain that again?" And screaming the teacher said NO! NO! NO! *YOU* DIDN'T UNDERSTAND BECAUSE YOU WEREN'T PAYING ATTENTION!!! YOU ALL NEVER PAY ATTENTION, I'M TRYING TO DO MY FUCKING JOB HERE! and she gave the girl a 5 because of that, ruining her grades. She also did that a lot, I even have some of the screeming sections recorded if things got out of hand. When she got fired, everyone pitied the sub teacher, because he had a lot of work to do, everyone was failing in chemistry, but the good thing is that he is a big sweetheart, and is much easier now.

Take a break from school (mentally) Talk to yourself and ask yourself what it is you want in life and how you’re going to get there. Don't let the school system hold you back or make you feel unmotivated. This is YOUR Life ! You must grab life with both hands and say "I'm in control !" You have 1 life remember that. It goes by quick too ! So live a life you wanna remember not a life where told how to live. Stay strong brother and believe in the process :)

This is so accurate. When you say “I don’t care about my grades” people assume that you don’t want to be successful, or have a life. No, i’m just more AWARE than the actual ADULTS in my life, that grades do not MATTER. They are marks on paper, an endless competition and pressure to stuff as much information as we can and spit it all back out, to never remember again. If you don’t stuff in all that knowledge and spit it out? You fail. You are shunned by the system. You have to suffer through more of it during summer, which is supposed to be your break. You are forced to “relearn” it. You are forced to repeat the year. You have to stay up through endless nights and stress, only for it to amount to nothing. You’ve learned nothing at the end of the day. The math we learn does not *matter* if we do not want to be scientist or architects. But we are treated as if each and every one of us like we have to become the smartest people in the universe. We become burnt out, we are bullied, shouted at, threatened- if we do not pass. There is so much in the world we are missing, because we are forced to sit in a school, or behind a screen, the schools controlling every aspect of our lives. -They control our free time by assigning us hours of homework -They control our sleep by having us stay up with hours of studying -They control what we wear with uniform, or dress codes -They control our day, forcing us to sit down and just listen to someone talk for hours and hours on end, often giving minimal actual interaction -They control what we eat, everyday in the cafeteria, unless we provide our own food -They control our mental health, our stress, they control almost every aspect of our lives, because they want us to get good marks. Adults will say “Well that’s just how to system is, deal with it”. We have a *CHOICE* to *NOT* deal with it. But we are constantly forced into picking school over our real lives. The idea *drilled* into our heads that if we don’t get a good mark on a piece of paper, we will fail, and become useless. This is why i no longer care about my grades. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk

It's also about raising your hand and participating. I mean I get it, in group work you should try to socialize but when it comes to answering a teachers question why make it a big deal if a student barley raises their hand. It just stresses out the student as now they are forced to contribute to the whole class convo instead of it being optional. Also just because a student always raises their hand doesn't mean they understand what's happening or is an A student. Majority of the time those who raise their hands are failing the class (in my experience, obviously some are grade A's). Also there's nothing wrong in failing a class. If you have trouble with a subject it helps you pin point what you struggle with and that's human. Also it's crazy how some teachers will be straight up honest and say the topic there teaching will only benefit those who need it (ex: Geometry and Construction). I feel the school system should allow kids to choose the classes they want that will help then for the career they want to pursue, at least for high school and maybe middle school or at least for the students who know there passion. Also with college, why should we pay for an education we struggled to gained. I mean college is where students are fully allowed to pursue their passion yet many can't because college is expensive and trying to gain a scholarship is crazy and then when a student doesn't want to go to college there looked down upon and I understand why someone would not want to go to college. I'm just one of the lucky kids who somewhat likes learning and is excited for college.l but I am also part of the many who is stressed by my ap classes and honor society responsibilities to try to impress as many colleges as possible. Granted this is all me, my family is luckily very supportive and are honest that if I don't want to go to college, it's okay and they will support me fully. Now personally the reason why I'm working so hard is because of what I want to pursue which is in the medical field so granted I have alot to put in but that's not everyone's case. All in all school should be about what the kid wants to learn and what they feel will suit them up for their future not what the board wants the kids to learn. (Sorry I went on a tangent it's just that the school system really needs to be improved to better kid's futures while also motivating them to push through to their dreams and for the love of God, they need to make college free or at least less expensive and hard to get into. It's crazy how much work students have to put in just for a piece of paper that says "hey I'm qualified through knowing math yet I have no idea how to cook but I hope you as a restaurant business hire me!").

There is so many things I could’ve done only if I didn’t understand people, yet people don’t understand me nor do I understand them, everybody just criticizes me for not understanding them but yet when I have a huge problem; nobody is there for me and then the only advice I get is “get over it stupid kid.” I hope I can just ignore it and move on; I hate to get stuck on something and always think about it.

I'm a high school junior. I've got all Fs and I've failed this semester. I've slowly been tuning out of school, mostly learning things out of the curious spirit I've possessed since I was a child off of the internet. I'm content with failing because I simply do not care anymore. It's a rinse and repeat with content, content that maybe I'd like to enjoy but it's brought up so often and only for the purpose of adding onto it for an exam/quiz/test. Actually, I can't enjoy almost any type of content in school because of this system of forced memorization and well, other things in this school system. The system is particularly ableist too as I'm neurodivergent and tasks are much harder when my brain is different than my neurotypical peers. I've just noticed that this system keeps me in a constant state of stress, it puts more strain on me, worsens my health, and drives me crazier than I already am. The pandemic really just enabled me to stop caring, to stop stressing myself out, and putting more focus on my health as well as a lot of other things. I'm already battling mental illness, not caring alleviates some stress. I'm ranting but it just isn't a good place for me to learn. The only thing I've taken from school is how to increase my social skills. Not that I was ever bad at socializing but it has somewhat taught me how to assimilate in society (and interesting field trips - i.e. gold panning) I can't take anything else good from school. I could drop out now but something keeps me from doing it and I've gotten this far. I'll finish it off. Might I even backtrack again but maybe I've been set up from the start to end up with this type of burnout and exhaustion. I had very high scores early on and after the end of elementary is where I see my decline. I blame the situation at the time of my dip but also myself for losing my steam. I shouldn't be so hard on myself but it's difficult and school sucks the whole purpose of learning. I'm ranting again but I hate school because it's made me hate what I've always done: ask too many damn questions and curiosity to learn about the unknown.

In this way, i will be able to accept failure and when I do, I will be able to conquer anything that’s on my path because i really have big dreams. The bigger the dreams, the bigger the risk. Its sad that school only ever cares about how well a person can memorize rather than developing an understanding and appreciation for that information. I believe that to some extent its why loads of people hate math and subjects similar to it. Everyone is made to memorize stuff within it but never truly understand why or how it works. Personally the idea of trying to understand the way our surroundings and everything in this universe works is what drives me to learn physics, but i’ve lost a good portion of that passion and interest due to how schools simply care about how well one can memorize and spit the same crap out onto paper and it makes me wonder how many more people suffer in silence due to the way education is in the modern day.

This does not mean by any chance that i encourage or indulge it, rather i follow my own path and strive to learn about my favorite topics in as great depth as possible. I simply wish education where i live wasnt made solely for the purpose of trying to make a person get good grades as opposed to understanding a topic truly and how it affects the real world. after i got into middle school, i went from a straight A student to an average C student. i was looked up to in elementary school for being one of the smartest and then it all crumbled. i went from learning at the same pace as everyone else to being in the highest classes. it put a huge strain on my mental health bc i still had to maintain that same "better than everyone else" mentality because that's how the adults in my life portrayed me in my younger years. i couldn't maintain those same good grades and it led me into a deep depression. i struggled with my depression for two years before finally starting therapy to help with my problems. all of my problems were based on the fact i wasn't as good as i thought. grades were all i cared about and now that i couldn't maintain them, i basically didn't do any school work. it stressed me out so much that i couldn't do it anymore. once i met my bf i finally felt the motivation to do good in school again. i still fall off the wagon sometimes but i think when you have someone to support you it can get better. i still just care way too much about making my parents happy about my grades instead of making myself happy. it sucks

yea mate I feel you I was always an A/High B student in elementary school and even through most of middle school, but after having online school happen in 8th grade, I absolutely give 0 shits about school. I’m an A/B/C/Sometimes D student now. My parents are now having unrealistic expectations of me keeping my A/B average or else they’ll just take away something thinking it’ll help me, but really, I have no support system. I’m one of the most introverted students in my school, because most of my school is hella athletic or really care about just sports, which I’m not into, so it’s hard to connect to people there. So by taking away a hobby of mine, it just drives me to be less motivated than before, because what’s the point of doing homework and chores then having nothing else to do lmfao. Also, I took pre-algebra in 7th grade and now I’m in algebra in 8th grade, so woohoo more stupid fucking grades to worry about. In short, school sucks, fuck school, they need to fix their ways.

Nothing matters at the end because you can really only choose one. By the time you're in high school you should be allowed to pick which career you want, and learn everything on there. There's no point in learning all of this useless algebra when one day you might choose to become an artist or maybe historian, either way no job besides jobs related to math requires such knowledge. “Schools don’t give you enough time to absorb the information” I agree.. I really do want to learn the material but they go to fast and I learn differently than some of the other kids in my class. It helps me more when they teach me directly so I can really ask questions and they can see what I’m doing and correct me better. We don’t have tutoring though because of the pandemic and the way my teacher explains things is complicated, he can’t teach well. He knows the material but he just can’t teach it to others.. I cheat in math because it’s easier. I try to learn it at home but I feel so rushed and then I get behind everyone else. I don’t want to cheat, it makes me feel stupid and I’m not learning anything, but I can’t afford my grades dropping because my mom expects a lot from me. I don’t want to listen to her yelling at me lol. It’s so hard to get motivated. I wish I had a small group where we taught each other and were supportive. I struggle with motivation and ego. I think badly of myself but I also think I’m better than everyone else? My school sucks too, the staff act like the kids and the teachers can’t teach, some don’t even understand the material that they teach! They are inconsistent, they don’t correct kids and they wonder why the school is so bad. Don’t remember where I saw this but it said something like school is just testing your memory, it’s not helping you truly learn.

I feel like if the teachers were more to the point it would be easier to understand what they are trying to teach. This proved to be true for me because I was going to take my midterm and I was worried because I didnt get anything so far. But just a day or two of studying and i got almost everything at a basic level enough to pass the test. While i studied to pass the test a began to realize that once you get it, it actually becomes fun to learn but teachers just make everything so complicated and unclear.

@@sofiamartinez6710 Okay, this is very crucial. You unveiled the literal secret deep inside. That actually struck me because you are absolutely right... :) The thing is, lots of things can be fun to learn. Anything can be a fun thing to learn. This is also why math (a good example for what I'm trying to say) can be super fun if you understand it and can do the problems. At the same time, it can feel like the most terrible thing in the universe if you don't know how to do it. It's just all about having to find out about what you find fun about it. I personally don't like Social Studies. Oops. That was an understatement. Let me rephrase that. I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATEEEEEE Social Studies more than anything. But who knows? If they taught this subject in a different way, who knows how much I would've fallen in love with it? I might've just been able to find my new favorite subject and something new that I never EVER thought I'd be passionate about. @@sofiamartinez6710 That's exactly the case for me too! I really wish that social studies was a subject I enjoyed because I might actually tell you that it isn't all bad sometimes... Some topics are very interesting and I really can get into it. I also absolutely agree with when you said that one year, you could love a subject but then hate it the other. I remember grade 8... man. How I loved science more than anything. Don't get me wrong. I still do. I am in love with science. The thing is, I love to be that enthusiastic student who really dives into the subject or perhaps even enjoys being with his teacher. I would spend (caps lock off) 30 minutes after school just talking to my teacher about science... then I would say "sorry for talking to you for so long... I ask too many questions too." He really was different. With that said, I feel like I didn't at all enjoy science in grade 9 the way that I wanted to (which could also be explained by good old Covid-19, but that's a different subject). I'm in science right now and I'm having a pretty good time and I have a good teacher, but my "grades" are suffering from a few "assessments". I hate having to feel pressure on even the subject I love. Why does school try to take away your dreams? That's because the job of a school is to make you employable so that you can afford that house to move to. @@ok-sn1uw I definitely get what you mean by this, And yes I think you still have to try your best even if you’re not good at it, that’s out of question. What I mean is that some people just naturally have more interest, and passion for these types of things wich makes them better at it. For example, an amazing athlete can’t compete with an extremely talented artist. Even if they both tried as hard as they could they couldn’t be as good as each other in those things. ..but even if you have the talent some people just don’t train it, this “talent” is just something that makes it easier and more natural so a person who doesn’t have that per se can still achieve as much if they have the will power and passion to do this. So like if I have more interest in art, I couldn’t force myself to be as good in PE or music class, even if I tried hard enough. Sometimes giving your all doesn’t mean you’ll perform “good” or get graded better. I say this because most of the time it’s not about the effort, the teacher most of the time doesn’t care about how hard you tried. They’ll give you a bad grade if you did “bad” and not as good as the rest, and vice versa. If a person didn’t try and just performed good they’ll get the better grade.

12/10/2020: I’m a high school sophomore. I’m smart got straight A’s for five quarters in a row. With ap’s. and advanced courses. Few days ago I realized I actually learn way more by self teaching myself stuff that I’m interested in. I basically will now only spend time on math and computer science. For me, this is way better and will fast track me to a job.

I'm sophomore (I'm supposed to be Junior, but I got held back in 3rd grade) as well, but at this point I've completely given up. I have no friends, I'm not smart, I waste all of my time watching porn, youtube, and playing videogames. Nothing I do will ever amount to anything. I turn 17 next year, and I'm not excited. My adulthood will be even more miserable. I honestly plan on ending it all before that point

It's a lot more torture when your in quarantine having no motivation to do online classes and yet the teachers give us 100 assignments expecting us to wake up 5:00 am to get ready for school when quarantine just tires you out because we have no human contact but people online and the people that live in your house. In the end, online school makes me suffer more than normal school.

Im literally a “golden child.” I have all honors and I enjoy reading. These days highest grades are Ds when my lowest grades use to be Bs. Im on my phone all day. Knowing I have potential and knowing im able to do my work yet not doing it just- WHY CAN’T I JUST DO IT? im always procrastinating and its just so hard to stop. I’ve tried- oh god i’ve tried- to get my grades up. Ive pulled all nighters without finishing a single assignment. IM LITERALLY A GOLDEN CHILD WHY CAN’T I JUST FINISH THE FREAKING ASSIGNMENT? Ive been wondering if I have adhd or add, and I tell myself its only because I want an excuse for being a stupid lazy procrastinator. I hate myself.

You have no idea how much I relate. I've always prided myself on my intelligence and love for knowledge, yet cant learns to give a shit about the due date for my chemistry lab. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was in third grade after my school made my parents get me assessed by a psychologist. They did nothing about it, I'm not in Cognitive therapy or being pumped full of Adderal like half of my school. Sometimes I want to get help or medication to make things easier, but then I laugh at myself for looking for a million excuses. i want to go far, I want to study something I love like engineering. hell, currently I've been thinking about being an astronaut, but its not so easy when you're constantly being told that will never happen if you cant get into a good college because your grades suck. I spend 3 hours stressing out over an assignment only to have an anxiety attack that leads to me skipping school for 2 days. its a never ending cycle.

Holy shit I am in the same spot. My lowest grades used to be a B, but ever since online school came. I started failing hard. My highest grade is still an A+ however that's only because a teacher actually knows how to teach his students during these hard times. I failed 2 of my classes with an F, I used to be failing 4 or 5 classes at the beginning. At the last week before break, I gained a spark of motivation and spent two whole days on my grades. I can't figure out why I'm not motivated at all. I just couldn't sit down to work for hours straight even though I know I had potential. You're not the only one going through this.

I feel like the only reason I'm trying to get good grades is because I wanna impress my parents and be just like my brother, there are so many things that school has done to me it gave me so many negative things to worry about, now I'm just tired of learning things that I'm going to forget, now I don't care anymore, I have so many things that I have learned in life/on the internet, I have so much time in my hands in such a young age why don't I use it? to be honest we learned so much things that are useless the only things that aren't being taught to us are the things that are meant to be important in our lives.

I don’t care about the bills, stop comparing me to my brother, and let me be happy and do something I wanna do *for the rest of my life.* I’m already in such a bad state as it is, at this point I have not gained anything since the first day of school online and it just tells me “yeah, u aren’t going anywhere lol” I just wanna write a book or series during hs and see where it goes, college... I’m not even sure but definitely won’t get supported with a artistic school that I dreamed of. I lack motivation into even writing idea for my book right now, y can’t I get my life together? School. I'm literally in the exact same situation what the fuck?? // Ranting Worse part is I only want to pursue my career in art, even if there's a chance I didn't get it I probably only want basic knowledge like languages and history and writing, yet my parents still insist and want me to get STEM subjects so badly /: not only I didn't get to reach my family's standard, it's literally SO obvious that I want to get into art. I start buying sketchbook since 12, decide to practise traditional painting 2 years ago, 90% of my online friends and mutuals draw and that still didn't came to my parents mind that "oh I should encourage my child more to get into her dream carrier!!" until I told them last year that I take art subject, yet they still want me to reach my brothers' high ass standard. Everyday since my big exam gets closer and closer my mental health is getting worse and I can't help crying whenever I think about how useless all these physics, chemistry, biology and addmath subjects will be useless to me in near future, yet my mom still acknowledge that I may want to take animation course but didn't bother to say a thing One of my brother is even worse. Even tho he knew I obviously didn't want to get into big courses like engineer and architecture he still expect me to reach his level /: and then act mad whenever I made the same mistake on questions several times and took too long to answer all of them I want to improve my art so badly, I wish there's more thing I could improve because for someone who want to pursue carrier in drawing, I'm still super mediocre in art for my age (I'm 17). If anything if I ever have a chance to experience in sculpture, music and better writing I'd rather take that. Yet I barely made significant improvement on my drawings jusy because I don't want to disappoint my parents I'm sorry for anyone reading this long ass ramble, it's just so tiring. I hardly get the chance to confess it anywhere because some people I know personally followed my social medias /:
