Video game remakes are everywhere these days. But what are the potential risks of this remake culture? I dunno but lets rant about it for 10 minutes or so. We're also going to talk about bluepoint and toys for bob and how they show us how to remake a game with grace and purpose. As well as Activision who show the opposite of all that and to top it all off my opinions on the Final fantasy VII Remake. Also look below for Jon Cartwright's video which goes into greater detail of some of FF7s short comings.

Found you from Derrat's twitter thread, glad I clicked good stuff. As someone who has said since RELEASE of FFVII that it has been my favorite game of all time I completely agree with your sentiment. I often say that I really wish they would have saved everyone the trouble from the start and just named it "Final Fantasy VII: Reimagined". Also good takes on RE, Spyro and Crash. To expand on how turn based can still work flawlessly in tandem with using Octopath for an example, Lost Oddesey was an absolute masterpiece and completely turn based as well. A serious 10/10 and it makes sense considering its the devs from squaresoft that detracted when Enix merged. Keep em coming boss.

Glad you enjoyed the video dude. I feel remakes aren't bad but in the last couple years standout remakes are few and far between. I mean look at the pokemon diamond and pearl remakes. Seems almost no effort went into where as something like silver and gold had to be completely rebalanced and Ruby and sapphire had to be completely remodeled. Hope we can keep you coming back to the channel. New video on Saturday

Gosh, I agree with your FF7 Remake take so much it hurts. I like both the original and the remake but I despised how padded the remake was. I don’t mind doing side content in games as long as it rewards me with good content like a neat weapon or some cool world building background that I would not have gotten otherwise. If all I get is some potions and experience than I’m just hunting some numbers and it feels like a total waste of time. FF7R not only did that a lot but like you mentioned even between crucial story elements that ruin the pacing. In retrospect it’s easy to say “then just ignore the side quests” but how are you supposed to know if you’re missing out on some lore or other good stuff while you are playing it if you don’t try it? I’m kinda nervous about the sequel with how it’s portrayed as this big open world with even more content and “Witcher 3 like side quests”. I want to be hyped but I’m sceptical to the point where I’m not entirely sure if I even wanna play it on release. Great video, Kev

What I don’t see is why old video games have to be changed for people to play them. If someone can’t play RE2 because of old mechanics or something, then they don’t like RE2 and that’s fine for them. Why retroactively change what made the games what they were for the sake of people who don’t even like them?
@Kevstreehouse
@Kevstreehouse Жыл бұрын
I feel there is a case to be made for some stuff that plays a bit more stiffly if it was a case of the technology holding it back but yeah I get your point like if you took re2 and made it a cover shooter with horror elements it wouldn't really be re 2.

@@Kevstreehouse Art is influenced by the time period it was made in. The technical limitations are a part of the experience of playing those games. If certain outdated features or whatever stop you from playing the game, then you don't like the game and that's fine.

If you are looking for any criticism, the only thing that I'd sat weirded me out were those text bubbles you use sometimes, its not that I dont like them, but they distracted me from what you were saying. I wish I had a solution to this "problem" (which is not a problem, its more of a personal dislike), but im blank. Im trying to think what dunkey or nakeyjakey (or any other essay style youtubers) do when they write something on the screen but I cant remember

@@juliprato thanks for the comments dude. It really helps the channel. I'd also agree that the timing of my speech bubbles was off here. The idea behind them is they are either supplementary jokes and or notes I forgot to script but I believe my latter videos do a better job with them. I also used them cause I find them more fun then just flat text on the screen.

Considering FF7 remake is made by the Kingdom Hearts guy I have 0 faith in it turning out well.
@Kevstreehouse
@Kevstreehouse 3 жыл бұрын
I was a massive fan of Kingdom hearts for the game play at the very least so I was excited they got nomura for the moment to moment stuff and environments. Turns out he forgot how to do all that and the only reason they got him is cause he knows how to turn a story that Could be 3 games into 10. Very sad to see when you realise the original has just as long a run time as the remake and while remake start to loose steam after the halfway point the original only really starts to get old once you go into the post game.
@bunnyofthesea
@bunnyofthesea 3 жыл бұрын
@@Kevstreehouse I just feel like he is up his own ass. People liked Kingdom Hearts because it was a fun little game with Final Fantasy and Disney characters interacting with each other. Not because of Nomura's edgy OC characters which he insists on making the star of the show. Going as far as removing all FF characters in KH3. At this point I would not be surprised if none of the original plot points happen in the remake and the story becomes entirely about Nomura's ghosts.
@Kevstreehouse
@Kevstreehouse 3 жыл бұрын
@@bunnyofthesea it's certainly telling when you see something like advent children which he directed and everyone hated. I will admit Kingdom hearts is way to self indulgent on his behalf. The intial idea of this game having final fantasy 7s story be the will of the planet is interesting but I think its ultimately a change so aerith doesn't have to die. I doubt I'll play the following games but I'll be interested to see how the gaming community feels about them.

@Kevstreehouse 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Johnny glad you enjoyed the video. If you are seeking out the original version just know that by today's standards its a little clunky. Character models aren't the best and sometimes discerning pre rendered background from interactive elements can be a pain. But the materia system, characters and themes are still very good even with the higher standards of today.

I haven't played FF7 remake because... I don't want all the things you mention about it annoying you. I 'nearly' love the Crash N sane trilogy because it 'nearly' recaptures the original with just that thing being 'slightly off' about the platforming collision detection you mention. However for me the evidence that the remake bubble is bursting is RE3 - the RE2 remake was so respectful of the original whilst the third game chucks out so many things people love to make changes that make it objectively worse and the whole experience feels like it was designed to make a quick buck after RE2 was unexpectedly successful. However - quick note - if you are going to feature other videos screaming profanities please don't make them louder than your own voice - was listening to this on low volume in a public place then when the swearing at 2 mins came in I got some odd stares.
@Kevstreehouse
@Kevstreehouse 3 жыл бұрын
While I apologise for the social awkwardness that caused you. That is the funniest critique I've ever received 🤣. I also completly forgot it was in there. My other videos are usually more reserved with maybe 1 or 2 swears so it was more a shock joke than anything else. Shall keep it in mind for future videos. Also I know what you mean. I think toys for Bob (can you tell I'm a fan) realize the issue with the remakes as trailers for crash 4 have highlighted a feature that shows where you'll land when you jump as well as your hit box which is a nice change. I also didn't even mention when I wasn't working on this I was playing another remake and had pre ordered amalur re reckoning so the recycling mentality of gaming is indeed strong it just needs to justify what it's doing. I've been told resi 3 remake is lacking but the only reason I didn't mention it was due to the fact I haven't played it so I didn't feel I could honestly critique it. Though I knew I was never going to buy so maybe that tells you something. That's for the comment and advice dude.

It's annoying how they remove certain things (even glitches which made 'em unique) u'd normaly see in tha original from tha remakes. Peepz act like old game graphics are sh*t. It cause of graphic limitations many game developers had no choice but to pour their heart & soul in their games to make 'em appeal to tha audience

For some stuff I get it. Like to preserve the games for easy access or introduce it to new audience or even fix less fun stuff. Think of wind waker making the triforce quest more streamlined and sailing faster. But it gets a bit mad when a game that came out 10 years ago. That already is available digitally everywhere and was already graphically and technically very modern gets remade is when you start to wonder wtf are we doing. Like there are some remakes I adore the new resi 4 is great but it doesn't invalidate the original and it's not a copy paste of the whole experience meaning it's actually worth something

You hate games that wastes time? *looks judgmentally at Bravely Default* I never got caught in Final Fantasy cult even though I enjoy RPG games. I tried playing the FFX & X-2 remake because it has Yuna and I remember thinking that she's pretty. It had the longest cutscene at the beginning and when I died at the tutorial (I know, so lame), I couldn't skip it! I wish remakes would allow us to do that. Not that...I played a lot of remakes.

I think a game needs to justify the waste. Like persona 5 has a long start but the game is baller for 90 percent of it.
