I really think frosted has grown on me over the years. I don't mind any surface finish at this point. I think the feel and the speed/control with consistent turning matters the most to me, but different cubes have different characteristics that make them good or bad so it could be a longer list than this

I like smooth (low friction between layers), controllable (not too fast) and soft (no catching doing algs). The closest I have found is tengyun v1 lubed to slow it down (eg galaxy) but I'm going to buy the purple wrm. Weight: I like "average" Size: I would love to try a really viable 59mm Edit: oh yeah - glossy for grip as I struggle somewhat with frosted

Concerning the weight. I felt like the Gan XS was too light and lacking that centrifugal momentum or something. Gan 11, on the other side, kinda gained that momentum thanks to corner-core magnets. I haven't tried the 12 yet, but I quite like that the 11 is very light but actually behaves like a heavier cube. I have a 354M v1 which is glossy, and a Gan XS which was matte but got polished by my fingers to glossy. The gloss looks exactly the same on them. However, I can tell the difference between them and my Gan 11 UV. The UV coated cube looks like it was glazed with some finish, I can see sort of excess flow around the edges of the colored tiles (I'm not sure I describe it right because English is not my native language). I love the look and feel of that. The UV coating is not scratch proof, and my UV coated cube has a lot of tiny scratches on it. It's nothing like SCS' PVC coating which literally heals with the heat from your fingers. That said, I'd sign a petition of #bringbackthegloss any time :)

I still think the WRM 2019 is one of the best cubes ever! It doesn't even have magnet adjustment, just a screw and elasticity system. It has glossy plastic which I love and it has amazing corner cutting. I've found that some cubes are hard to set up but moyu flagships are almost always incredibly easy to set up with any lube! I also like the feel and weight of the cube. I think a cube being less than 70 grams is more of a gimmick and makes the cube feel cheap. I love cubes that are 80 grams cuz they feel way more premium and that's my opinion. I still use a valk 3m and it's one of my favorite cubes! Cube companies need to go back to just designing a good cube and not be so worried about a new tension system and magnet adjustment.

Spot on mate. Cubes are losing their quality feel by becoming lighter. Adding weights that you can put in would be perfect and such a classy touch. Ive been dissapointed with each of gans flagships since the X. They perform great if not better than the x, but they just dont feel comfortable. Mainly because of the weight. I really dont like the frosted plastic and primary internals either. Ive got no complaints about the uv coated option , but black internals make the colors easier to distinguish and makes it look better. Also the sound... something needs to change with the sound

I'd love to get a feel for what corner-core magnets feel like, alas I haven't felt like spending money on the 11mpro was necessary for me. Tho I am tempted by the duo, I don't think gan is for me. I am very interested in the CH mods of eg the xman tornado and wrm! Tho I already have the cubes so if they could sell it as a DIY set that would be great.

i got the Gan 11 m duo for 3 weeks now, its great i wish the inside they used a bit stronger plastic because its a bit weak, but other than that and sometimes when i test corner cutting it catches, its a good cube though. btw the catching only happens when testing corner cutting not in solves, and i think its because the core to corner magnets try to pull the corner pieces in which causes it to catch but when solving your turning to fast for the magnet to make it catch. J perm also said this is more noticable in the Gan 12 which makes sense since there is stronger corner magnets.

You never really need to lube the core. Not even with spring u less you are dominating sound. You actually don't need to lube the pieces. Lubrication is used to change the feeling of the cube. It's not necessary for a function like you would think oil with a car.

What do I look for in a cube? Most of these are already in the Tornado V2, but I'll also list down where it lacks: 1. Quiet Turning 2. Intuitive Adjustment System 3. Good set of accessories (cube bag, adjustment Multi-tool, *stock lubes, *MoYu's Flagship Case/Stand, CFOP Pamphlets, & Generic Adjustment Manual) 4. *A way to take the cube apart for General Cleaning 5. *A wide range of settings for different cubers (most set it to the loosest, so the range isn't really that wide. The same goes with WRM 21's Magnets - most people go with settings 1 or 2). 6. 54-55mm 7. Semi-gloss (I don't mind Frosted. I only see it as a proof of an unused cube - like the seal on food packages). 8. Offers so much for $25 (yeah, the RS3M 20 took the Budget Line, but the Tornado V2 led the Flagship Line with the price) 9. *WRM 19-21 Performance

Nice review, I like how you mentioned your biases, that's something Totalbiscuit used to do. Even though TB might feel differently to a game than me, I could still tell if it's right for me. I like 56mm cubes best so far, 55.5mm I don't find much difference and 54mm feels a little small but I could probably get used to it. I wouldn't want larger than 56mm in a 3x3, but I know a guy that can't find a large enough 3x3. I'd say my hands where slightly larger than average but fingers slightly shorter. I hated how hard the original Rubik's cubes were to turn, so didn't use them much. Since discovering speed cubes I tend to feel the faster the better and haven't found a cube ever too fast. I get finger pain so a lighter and faster cube means I can use it longer, but I understand you like a slower cube with far greater tensions than I would ever like. You said with the 356 X I think, that you wished there was heavier springs but I already felt the heaviest springs it came with were too heavy for me. I loved the core magnets on the 11M Pro and still hoped to transition to them. I found the 11M magnets to be very uniform or smooth throughout the turn, I liked this but I also liked the click of the 356X. However the breaking force on the 356X clear magnets did hurt my fingers a bit over time. I could of used the lighter magnets, but I didn't choose to. As for weight and surface, these were the reasons my 356X remains my main. I love the shiny surface of the 356X, sure it has a couple of scratches but that's part of the charm. The Gan 11M Pro has much less frosting and is more smooth than the early Gan Smart cubes but I still prefer the look and feel of the 356X. While I like a lighter cube I didn't take enough time to get used to the 11M Pro and went back to the 356X, but I wouldn't want anything heavier than the 356X. For momentum, on another review I saw they spun the top layer 6 times with one flick. I think being lighter this would change faster with higher frictions/tensions. A heavier cube with more inherent friction from springs would vary less. Considering the above, have you considered trying to get used to a lighter turning style? I also already bought a Gan12 after seeing your short but before your review, but based on your turning in your earlier short and your review alone, I still would of been curious enough to buy it. One thing I would point out though is your review didn't show off the crazy turning at light tensions that you included in your short or I missed it, but you were the only one I've seen to show off tight tenstions so far. As for price, for me that's not a concern, I've wasted more money buying cubes just to experience them and then to put on a shelf never to use them again. However that's how you find a better cube, this is why I love customization.

I think now that I have had a UV coated cube I never want to go back to one without it. I have the 11 and really like the center magnet system so far and I'm excited for this next version. I'm a bit hesitant about the maglev concept but figure if I don't like it I always have my 11 still. Lighter doesn't really make a difference to me as long as it isn't brittle. Never had experience with anything less than 56mm so no opinions.
@omarmohammd5276
@omarmohammd5276 3 жыл бұрын
there is just one problem with maglev. When you have two magnets that are repelling each other for long amounts of time they will slowly but surely weaken each other therefore the whole spring system will weaken. This is why I have stopped myself from buying this cube. I can go more in detail why it weakens but I won't.

I dont really care about size and weight, but 66g would probably work for me worse than other cubes. I would really want a cube thats as stable as possible, but it should also be able to cut 45 degreese ofcourse. I think that UV Coating, MagLev and Corner-Core Magnets is the best option right now, but i didn´t try any of that yet. I only tried PVC Coating, which is similar to UV Coating from what i´ve heard. It should obviously also feel really nice, but almost every cube has that right now. I like the feeling of the WR M, XS, Air SM, GTS3 M, Tengyun, etc... so yeah. and I also think, that cube companys are going the right way with fixed screw tensions, because im always ending up with uneven tensions at some point and than im trying to fix them for half an hour. I even bought a new Thunderclap V3 M and GTS3 M because of that problem. I just think that there should be a little more options than what they have right now. I already mentioned, that i would want UV Coating as the finish, but i would also be fine with glossy and some other finishes, but i absolutely hate something like that that the Meilong has.

Just looked up your opinion on this cube after getting one for myself a few days ago. After trying most of the settings and struggling to find anything that would work well for me, I wanted to see if you had any similar issues. The tensions seem to be a problem in that I found, as you've said in your video, there's nothing really on the upper end in terms of settings. I had to set it to 5/6 on both just to get something that was usable for me. I guess maybe the cube just isn't for me, I am more than likely going back to the Tornado v3. There's no doubt that the cube is great, as Tymon/Matty/other high-level cubers all do amazingly on it, but I just can't seem to see where all the hype is coming from (especially with the price, which I agree is also likely just mostly marketing).

Before Premier Predictions: 1. It's still 56mm. You prefer smaller cubes... the way of most 2021 flagships. 2. Adjusting the MagLev Settings is still clunky compared to Springs. 3. Gan 11's Pokebox is still better.

In my opinion, an amazing GAN cube would be one that has either adjustable weights, or is over 75-80 grams at least, glossy plastic, core magnets, edge magnets that are farther into the cube, and heck maybe an interesting touch that yeah wouldn't do too much, but that would give GAN cubes at least a little more value for how much your paying for it would be interchangeable internal plates like the PeakCube had. Maybe like some different colors and textures or whatever. Mostly though I think the higher weight of it would be awesome. I personally really like heavier cubes.

Both Gan and Moyu rushed way too hard to put out maglev. Their maglev implementations are just wrong and as a result it makes the puzzles feel strange and off. So heres the issue, magnets don't have a linear force gradient. Theres something called the inverse square law where if the distance between two magnets is doubled the magnetic force between them will fall to a quarter of the initial value. However, on both the WRM 2021 and the Gan 12, you have the same tensioning systems that they use for springs which use a bunch of set distances. Each of those notches needs to be half the one before it for it to feel like a linear adjustment but thats obviously not what we get. Its why the really tight settings are so different from the looser ones. There's a sweet spot on both puzzles where one click literally doubles the tension which is never a good thing (where this is depends on the travel distance) and it's why there are only a couple of good settings on either of the puzzles. I don't like extremely light puzzles either; they feel cheap and the turning feels really strange. The 11m duo was on the cusp of what I feel is acceptable though I always keep going back to my WRM 2020/2021. Also its plastic is way too thin which makes it almost translucent in certain lights. The corner/core magnets are a good system and so is maglev but their implementation is way too clunky especially for a puzzle at this price. For me, the best feeling puzzle I've ever used is the WRM 4x4 or the Dayan v2 megaminx. The WRM 4x4 has great plastic pieces that almost feel like they are made out of ceramic. The weight is perfect and the size is just right for a 4x4. The Dayan v2 is a lighter puzzle but it also has very sturdy piece design and clicky magnets which I do like. If I am going to pay a premium for a puzzle, I want that puzzle to feel like its worth it.

I also will try adjusting the settings (it’s currently set-up from SpeedCubeShop). I also like that the MoYu is slightly smaller. As for Gan, i do LOVE their Smart Cubes. The Gan 365 i3 is a bit clunky / crunchy and catches often. But it’s still AMAZING for practicing algorithms! And i just got the Gan 12 ui, and it’s the best Gan cube i have. It is as good as any non-smart cube i own. The only draw back is the battery doesn’t last long (a few hours only), so I’m glad i have both smart cubes so i can use the i3 when the battery dies on the ui.

Sounds like you are describing a cube I'd love. (except for the clicks) Size: OK. Grippy coating: Good, though oddly, I've not found my Gan 11 pro M UV to be grippier than my regular Gan 11 Pro M ... maybe I've got weird skin? ... Weight: Excellent. (I love a light puzzle) Fast: (didn't catch that part, can I assume it is fast and easy to turn?) I tend to go light with magnets and prefer fast, easy and light puzzles. I prefer dry puzzles as the feel is easier to maintain and hate it when they get "gummy", which is inevitable when you lube (though I must admit, the first hours of solving with a fast lube are sweet). Controllable: (I assume you found the puzzle a little hard to control?) I don't care much about control. I'm a slower Roux cuber (typical 40-90 second, typical (PB ~28 seconds (in practice) currently averaging around 70, due to switching to Roux full color neutrality (was around 40-50 secs when focused on W/Y top and G/B sides) ) I just like to do solves at my slower pace, but value the cube being easy to turn over controllability. Clicky: --- don't like that at all, Strongly prefer quiet cubes. but I don't mind it when alone in a room.

I like lightweight puzzle because I like spamming moves and the heavier it is the more energy it requires to move and the faster you fatigue. Light magnet is also preferred if the puzzle is light as it takes less effort to disengage the magnets from each other, thus less fatigue. This is why I like WR M and MeiLong 3M better than the RS3M 2020. I have never touched GAN cubes yet to know if I prefer that over MoYu cubes. I also hate loud puzzle. The quieter the better.

Gan really is like the iPhone of cubes - maybe its my age but don't feel the need to upgrade to a whole new device/cube when its only slightly better (if at all in this case) every year. having said that they're in it to make money and I don't think there is any stigma in paying for something you like, no one is forcing people to, the issue with this one seems to be - its more expensive it is it better, or is it simply a different gimmick. Which is why these kind of reviews are important. Good video!

To be honest I don’t fully get your points given that you actually liked the 11M Pro and your concerns would be valid for that cube too. Or did your preference change? I don’t say the 11M Pro and the 12 could not be better and I also don’t say, GAN’s direction seems to be good (either about the price or the areas that they are focusing on)… But for my taste the 11M Pro was far the best cube in 2020 and probably I would think the same about the 12 this year, because I just like the feeling of these kind of cubes. I agree with you that GAN should focus on what the majority of the cubers actually would like to see in the puzzles and also they should seriously reconsider the pricerange… But these issues did not just appear with the 12 today.

I did a quick check on his Gan 11 vid and he seems to consistent: 1. The 55mm (or smaller) is his preference thing. 2. Frosted finish is a "meh" 3. The Gan 11 is light, and he almost wished it was heavier. So, the Gan 12 is indeed too light for him. 4. He slowed down the 11. So the 12 is indeed too fast for him. 5. He's a fairly accurate turner, so the 12's "+2 Fixer" (which isn't really in the 11) is irking him. 6. With more magnets you'd expect the 12 to be heavier than the 11. Gan got around that by using a much thinner plastic. So the 11 somehow has a stronger build because of it. 7. He had no problem recommending the heavier older Gan Puzzles even at that time... even mentioning back then the Adjustable Weight one. Finally, the only new thing he addressed was the price because Gan is just ignoring the current market in terms of that. It was only focused on competing against MoYu.

Top 5 wishes for cubes: 1. Deeper corner magnets to reduce the clickiness 2. Less focus on the corner magnets they are nice but I often can't tell a difference between the strength settings 3. Dropping the price, I mean the number of different gan puzzles is foolish and the high price point is just begging to miss out on market share. 4. Making adjustments to match what the community wants. Look at moyu and the WRM and the RS3M. Two puzzle sets locking in market by lowering their price. 5. The technology they are trying to invent isn't always addressing the needs the community has with puzzles. Like the puzzle trying to finish it's turns really isn't something that can for most solves unless it's really fast. Why focus on that?

I totally appreciate the fact that even though GAN sent you the cube, you really expressed your disliking for it. I don't think that is an easy thing to do. I really believe GAN should take a step back with prices and trying to push the envelope just in a marketing way a bit too much. For me, I don't have the 12, but the 11 had way too strong magnets for my style. I enjoy light puzzles as they're easier on the arms but I do understand that the inertia of a slightly heavier puzzle might help in some ways. I actually like 55mm puzzles better but having big hands I feel they're right at the edge of usability for me as there's a few occasions where my fingers get stuck in an alg (can you hear me, E perm?) that I never get on a 56.

I love the Gan 11 UV coated. I have over a dozen Gan cubes, pretty much every edition they've made and doubles for favorites (I have 2 UV coated 11's),... I really wanted the Gan 12 Maglev,.. but at $80. I just reached my breaking point with Gan. I refuse to pay $80. for a 3x3 puzzle cube. Not when Moyu, Qiyi and others all make fantastic cubes for $30. or less.

My issue with Gan has always been the price. I have never used a Gan so I can’t attest to how if performs, but when the likes of the now $5 WR3M 2020 (which outclassed everything on the market at release) is still a viable product for speed cubing, why would you throw away hard earned cash that you could spend on stuff you ‘need’? Sure, maybe the quality of the older Gan’s were among the best on the market, but when they are given to the best of the best, young impressionable folk “must have one”. And yeah, that gives Gan a boat load of cash to experiment, innovative, and improve cubing, but the likes of MoYu, QiYi, and YJ are doing the same with a cheaper product.

I also don't like the latest Gan's cubes. They are probably the fastest cubes, but I don't like to cube with them. It feels like they are made with cheap plastic, and they will break in your hands. I would love to see them a little heavier and much much cheaper. On the other hand, I literally love the UV coat, but NO way I am going to buy a $60-70 cube, and you should do the same.

I think core magnets and edge center magnets are gimmicky and just get in my way. I understand it works for some but for me, simple magnets are all I need - with maybe some adjustment options so I can select my preferred magnet strength. As far as MagLev goes, I always prefer faster cubes and in my experience MagLev cubes are crazy fast. And if they're too fast a little lube easily gets it to my preferred speed. Glossy Plastic for life. Matte is a gimmick that wears out anyway and is annoying while it is still present because my fingers slip off the puzzle mid turn. Also I would love to see Gan do what Moyu did with the WRM lite. Basically reduce all the fancy packaging and unnecessary accessories and drop the price. Nobody uses that shit beyond the first couple of days when they're excited.

(just copy moyu and qiyi mann, make a great piece design and build from that, don't rely on gimmicks that much) 5. related to 4, the alignment system MAY BE intrusive to some people and it might just feel like turning magnets with plastic instead of turning plastic with the accompaniment of magnets 6. last but always the least the pricing, my last gan cube was the air m and i swore that i would never buy another gan cube again.. too much unnecessary packaging and useless tools that won't be used other than setting up the cube ONCE! am i right shawn? lol

Not a good video scr. You're talking all personal preference. Basically you're calling out gan to make a custom cube for you. I hate the Gan 354 V2 because they didn't adjust the core to the size and therefore felt totally incomplete to me. All a puzzle has to feel like for me is Fun. The gan xs still does that for me. That puzzle never get's boring because of its light turning, tactical feel and the more accurate turning you have to do yourself. To much assist and a puzzle gets boring quite easily. You also have to remind yourself that the majority of puzzlers in the world are not sub 20 solvers and do not require the preferences you guys great solvers have. Gan xs is still the most exciting puzzle to date for me. The feel,the sound, the imperfection, the perfection, the perfect weight... Still like your reviews scr! Keep it up 👍

GAN cubes suck. If you have your magnets set up the way you like them, you're done, no?? Why would you need to keep adjusting them? A cube that just included slots for magnets, that was also supported with magnet-sets that came in minimum-, weak-, medium-, strong- and maximum-strength would be more configurable than a GAN cube (at least in terms of the tractor array), and the result would be much more simple and elegant than a cube with DIP switches on the corners that are operated with the end of a screwdriver. I would love to see innovation in cube customization, but quick-adjustability just doesn't seem especially useful. Having a simple, light cube with slots (in the pieces) for ballast would work really well (the ballast could just be square, steel plates, with holes of varying sizes punched out). The company could also sell a range of cores with different masses, so you could distribute a chosen amount of extra mass towards the core, or on the corners, or around the edges, or any of the possible permutations. GAN uses its (genuine) innovations to design overly complicated (and expensive) puzzles that actually limit their owner's ability to tune their cube, all for the sake of allowing quick adjustments, which is of little practical use. I personally went with the MoYu RS3M 2021, as that seemed much more elegant, and it only cost £6.95 (with a tractor array and maglev). GAN cubes are absurdly over-engineered.
@thesphyrth
@thesphyrth 3 жыл бұрын
Quick Adjustability is actually the standard now. Many favor it over inconveniently having a separate kit for configuration, then have that kit lying around somewhere when you're done. When your adjustment system is already in the cube, you won't have any spare parts potentially getting lost. You just have the cube (and it's tool). As for "Why do I need to keep adjusting them when I got the settings I want?" 1. Experimentation - I love tinkering and playing with different settings in general. I can always easily go back to my liking anyway. 2. Improvements in My Times - I don't really have to re-adjust FREQUENTLY. For example. When I started as a 1-min Solver, I had my RS3M 20 set to the tightest setting (stock magnets). As my fingertricks improved, I gradually loosened my cube and added magnets. Over time, the Spring Compression (which was still set to 0) also gradually moved up. If there was a flaw in Gan's customization, it's the fact that it's clunky compared to the competition.
@PIX_BMS
@PIX_BMS 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, @@thesphyrth. You know a lot more about this subject than I do, but the fact that it has become standard now is the problem, as I see it. It's a bad trend. The cubes sacrifice customizability (and simplicity, reliability and affordability) to make the few things you can adjust easier to change. Simply making the slots that the magnets go in 4mm taller (but still the same diameter) as the magnets, then providing 0.5mm thick (non-magnetic) washers that go above or below the magnet, would make the (effective) magnet strength much more configurable than the GAN system (and applies to every magnet). If the washers had holes of different sizes in (changing their masses), they could double as ballast, so that would be finely configurable too. You could easily extend this approach to the maglev system as well. Keeping everything so simple would help to keep the cube itself really light, so the ballast wouldn't normally be redundant, and they could sell low-density washers with big holes for people who wanted to minimize the mass of the ballast. They could also sell weighted cores, so the user could distribute the extra mass better etc. The cube would not be adjustable, at all, so admittedly, you wouldn't be able to incrementally adjust the cube as you practice (at least, readily), but you could own four for the price of a GAN 12 M Pro, which could all be configured differently. And you wouldn't lose the bits, as you leave them at home, in your toolbox. That's the point, really - to separate the art of configuring cubes, from the fun of just using them.
