Left Winnipeg to move to Quebec. I would disagree that housing was affordable in Winnipeg. By far, here in Quebec, renting and buying is more feasible and less expensive. As for weather, winters were more manageable in Winnipeg I find because they were simply cold wheread in Quebec we have wet winters with freezing rain and power outages. I don't think I've ever experienced freezing rain and days without power when I lived back in Manitoba (I'd gladly take that dry and cold winters over what I experience now) . Despite all the cons like homicide rates and expensive living, I lived majority of my childhood and teenage life in Winnipeg and I miss it sometimes.

The Winnipeg crime issue will fade away. Why? I'll tell you. Most crimes are committed by young men. Right now, there is a large cohort of young men in the Canadian prairies, especially in Winnipeg. So the problem isn't with crime in Winnipeg. The problem is with the proportion of young men in the overall population. When these young men grow up, the incidence of crime will decrease.

Winnipeggers have a saying: "There is no bad weather, only bad clothing choices". The secret to staying warm is to dress in layers. If in doubt, dress like a local. "Life Where I'm From" has a good KZbin video about how Canadians survive winter, and it was filmed in Winnipeg.

Totally agree. Winnipeg is a shit hole. I lived there for few years that was the worst time in my whole life. Living cost is cheap for reason. People usually complain about too many natives living in Winnipeg, well I don't think so. The biggest problem is lots of racists you can encounter everywhere and a small job market with nepotism. I did my time there and moved to a bigger city, feel so happier.

Hi, I moved from the GTA to Ottawa, there are job opportunities here but the weather is equally as bad. The weather really affects me here and we recently went to Mississauga for a weekend break last month before the lockdown, there was hardly any snow on the ground and the weather was mild. If I had a choice I would move back I a heartbeat. The best place to live in Canada is the GTA to be honest. Everything is easily available, African food etc and proximity to USA. Ottawa is quiet but it can become boring and isolating people are very conservative here and I'm not even an extrovert. You will tend to do things by yourself a lot. In the GTA people are a lot more open and it's easy to make lasting connections for social gathering and kids. The only positive for me here is the work opportunities. I will look into transferring to the GTA.

Hi there! I would like to clarify things about the crime in Winnipeg. Winnipeg is full of vibrant communities that work with what they have to nurture themselves and flourish where they are given opportunities to do so. The crime she mentions where a young girl was murdered by a police officer for stealing alcohol is one that happens often. However, these crimes are rooted in problems deeper than just "good person/bad person" narratives. Delivering news on crimes in a way that doesn't have all the details regarding the history of poverty, governmental neglect and intergenerational trauma and systemic racism is irresponsible. Yes, crime happens. Unfortunately in Winnipeg, moreso in impoverished parts of the city, crime is high. This happens when communities are unsupported or threatened with removal of programs that connect and keep people together. It happens across the world, but there are advocates and passionate people in winnipeg working within these communities and fighting for these communities to help bring them out of the abuse of a system that is stacked against them. I hope in the future you'll be willing to look beyond a few negative things that happen in this city and come visit! It is a home-y city. It's not flashy like vancouver or toronto. But it's not meant to be.

However, many Canadians don't adhere to this man's disgusting perspective and truly find value in the refugees who seek asylum in our country and cities. People are people, and while this man is so little and sad in his own head, there are many others in the city of winnipeg itself who want growth, change and connectivity. @mmm.mmm.mmm.4 жыл бұрын
@@RichardCockerill That's not a real solution Richard. A solution to an unsafe neighbourhood is finding the root of the problem. The north end suffers from serious governmental neglect. There are few support systems in place that help those in need in impoverished places reach a level of safety. Growing up in poverty is directly related to higher rates of violence and crime. What needs to happen is people who are in the north end need to have access to community programs and affordable but presentable housing. When people are treated like they don't deserve respect for generation after generation, they begin to believe it. Similar to how when people are fed racism as children or expose themselves to narratives that only work to feed exactly what they believe rather than developing their own opinions by hearing contrasting ones from other people's perspectives. Winnipeg and its people can be the friendliest I've met in all my travels. There is potential for growth and development in everything and everyone. I hope you keep that in mind the next time you decide to post racist band-aid solutions that work for no one. Have a beautiful day.
@mmm.mmm.mmm.4 жыл бұрын
Hi there Kalvista. I'm sorry to hear about your experiences at such a young age. The north end can be a real tough place to grow up and be sometimes. There are some initiatives in place that always need support to help develop communities and the connections the people in those communities have. If you're interested in seeing the north end becoming a safer and more accessible place to live, I highly suggest taking the time to find those programs and volunteering with them to make your city a safer and more welcoming place for everyone. These initiatives are often not supported by the govt because it doesn't fit with the narrative that has been played out for generations. (a narrative that segregates indigenous peoples and refugees from middle-class white people and perpetuates violence by not placing the right support systems where they belong for those marginalized persons) It's time for a change. You deserve to feel safe and welcomed in your city no matter where you live. And so does everyone else.
