Why I don't need another Sebenza, and why I just bought another Sebenza

Today, I'll talk a bit about 'rational and content-driven' purchasing decisions for reviewers, which of course leads me to decide that the very last thing I need is another Sebenza. And then I'll discuss the seemingly paradoxical fact that I just bought another Sebenza.

Your night sky Sebenza is a beautiful cutting tool. The variation in engraving depth, proportion, and colors give the illusion of depth and transparency as not to hide the knife underneath, something I really appreciate. I'm not a knife collector (yet), but a well thought out precision tool brings a smile to my face every time I pick it up. If this knife makes you smile Nick, then it was worth every penny. I purchased a ZT 0562ti yesterday. It's way more knife than I'll ever need, but I have a feeling it'll be worth it :)

I’ve two Sebenzas, a small 31 pj and a large 31 black micarta, and to me, they are just great go to work knives. Not particularly flash, just good solid knives. I had a sebenza 31 sometime in 2020 from Blade Hq and it was an absolute pos out of the box. It had play in every direction and they wouldn't fix it. Ended up modding it so it wouldn't have any really for the person I sold it to 3-4 months ago. A litte over a week ago, I got a large inkosi tanto with natural micarta inlays and it's so much better for what I do & it's actually holding up. It's such a great knife so far!

I came on KZbin because I made a plan to make a knife you can hold sabre grip or punch dagger grip with no moving handle. Then I thought: now there's something novelty enough to be a candidate for stainless Damascus! So I wanted to look at knives made from it and saw a Sebenza in Spirograph!!!!! Man, I never wanted a Sebenza more. The KnifeCenter exclusive Sebenza really grabbed me, earlier this Summer, but it's more than sold out! They're made a few hours West of me. I'd love to have that hard to find, hard to get one! I'll live without it, but not like I'm gonna hide my eyes from them!

Chris Reeve Knives is a perfect example of good business practice. Some complain that he doesn't compete in today's market because you can get more for your money. I would argue that even though fancier knives do exist, the time he spends nailing down the design creates a timeless piece. From the handle shape to the blade grind, the Sebenza is a very functional work of art. Instead of dropping a new knife then forgetting about it so he can come out with another, Chris refines his designs over time and makes a smaller variety with each design being well conceived and purposeful. This does a few things: It brings us a mechanically reliable knife and it keeps his products serviceable while keeping his overhead down. This also keeps his brand highly reputable and desirable. Broke a blade on your 20 year old Sebenza? No problem, he has a replacement since he hasn't had to redesign it. He got it right the first time and hasn't dropped the Sebenza for a different model. I wish more companies would follow that MO. The most reliable cars are the models that have been out the longest, for example. Unfortunately, we seem to demand the new sexy thing. I want refined and proven more than I want new and fashionable, leaving space for advancement of course. Nick, the custom grinding on that Sebenza is beautiful.

Same reason I have 4 different versions of the Koenig Arius. It's one of the only knife models that I consistently get excited about. Those of us that have been buying, selling, and trading for years understand how easy it is to become jaded in this hobby. I'll spend $1000 on a new knife and have the excitement wear off by the time I get it out of the box. I've learned to stop chasing the next new thing (for the most part) and focus on the designs and models that have proven themselves (to me at least).

I had a Sebenza 25 for a while, just to see what all the hubub was about. It was a nice knife, and I could really appreciate the build quality. But I didn't keep it, nor buy another CRK. I couldn't get over the chalky texture that felt like it was leaving something on my hands, and with my little girly hands and soft thumb, I couldn't open it easily with one hand. The thumb stud was too sharp and the detent was too strong. So I passed it on to a collector who was overjoyed to have it.

Nick, just started watching your reviews, took your advice and picked up the Ferrum Forge Stinger, good call. Also got the small Sebenza 31 with the Chain mail, sort of against your recommendation but I wanted it. Both came the same day and I had a bit of a Timex conundrum. The Ferrum, for the price, is a great knife, like a Timex. The Sebenza is a solid knife, but is it worth the price, kind of like a Rolex, one doesn't do any more than the other. Truth be told the Ferrum was sharper out of the box and I had to knock the top off the thumb stud on the Sebenza and work the action to get it smooth. Not sure I would get a second one. Keep up the great work.

The small, plain sebenza really is my favorite edc knife.. the short story goes as such.. my first was a small micarta insingo.. it was great but I just wasn’t really feeling the blade shape. I bought it because it was the only one available locally. I also order a sanrenmu 7010 at the same time to compare. I ultimately decided to sell the crk but my girlfriend at the time actually threw it out on me before I could complete the sale. Insingo gone. However, I still had the sanrenmu and absolutely loved it! I carried it for the next 6 years despite having a pile of “better” knives handy. The sanrenmu was just about perfect. So years later, relatively recently, I found a new small plain 31 with the drop point locally and snatched it up. Zero regrets! It’s just the knife I always wanted and I look forward to years of it in my pocket. I’d wanted a plain drop point for the get go.. but I decided to try the insingo and I thought of the inlays as a consolation prize of sorts. Great knife but it just wasn’t the one that spoke to me.. although I still like to think that it’ll turn up some day. Maybe when I’m moving or something.

I have had 8 CRK's come thru my collection but only 1 has remained, my Nyala FE. As much as I've tried enjoying their folders they just don't give me the joy other more modern folding knives do. I want my experience using a blade to be effortless. To feel like the blade is an extension of my hand. Other makers have evolved and filled that need while CRK is stuck in the solid construction phase of the knife industry's resurgence.

I have a 2014 large seb. Build quality of crk is the gold standard. The problem is that the company has not evolved to meet the desires of high end collectors. For that kind of money, we want not just great basic knives. We want flippers, creative designs, steel variety, and newer grinds and blade shapes. CRK isn’t delivering in that regard.
@mikejoseph8392
@mikejoseph8392 3 жыл бұрын
Yet they still can’t keep up with the demand. Sometimes simple perfection is best left alone. CRK is ore like Rolex and Omega. Their archaic automatic movement commands a much higher price than the quartz yet it is not nearly as accurate and infinitely more expensive to produce yet it is in much higher demand. What could CRK possibly produce today that has not been already made in many different qualities. Way too much stuff being produced in way too short a period of time. There was something beautiful about “Leaving well enough alone”.

@@mikejoseph8392 Good points, but I don't think it's right. A simple search of common online retailers shows plenty of CRK's in stock. Also one of the most commonly sold knives on the secondary market. I think a lot of people lust after them, buy them, love looking at them and handling them, but end up not carrying them that much and then either safe queen them or sell them. Don't get me wrong, I love mine, but I carry and use others much more either because they are more fidgety and more ergonomic. CRK's are really not that ergonomic in my opinion.

The desires of high end collectors? I’m not sure what makers you have but crk has a solid place in my collection and rotation. I think the execution of the build far outweighs the latest bling. I don’t want another m390 ti flipper. I have many already. I want crk to do crk to the best of their ability. We don’t need the variety and QC issues of Benchmade and Spyderco just for the sake of change.

@@Luke-mz5zt Nah, they could easily evolve and stay just as good but they chose not to. Their stubborness around the damn thumb stud for years is an example. I love mine, but it doesn't get carried as much. It's a two hand open and close and the s35vn is very soft. To each his own though!

@nadim kanafani I disagree. If it ain't broke don't fix it. CRK is like the Toyota Tacoma. Running the same engine and transmission for decades. Sure, new stuff has come to the market but you won't find anything in the Toyota unless it's been tested and found reliable. Until then keep the stuff that's known to work well. Don't get caught up in fads. Give the customer what works for years and years and the customer will be satisfied for the same amount of time.

There are so many good knives out there at the same price point as the Sabenza that you could get more knife for the cost. That being said, I will be buying a Sabenza soon.

Mine is 100% the Spyderco Subvert. That knife is so incredibly huge, has a gaudy orange scale, and a blade shape that I find reminiscent of a cancerous kidney... And yet I love it perhaps most in my collection because it stands in for a full custom from Black Snow that is truly outrageous.

I remember buying my first Benchmade and thinking it was super expensive, and I probably wouldn't buy another knife that expensive for a looong time. Fast forward a couple years and I've got 3 sebenzas and 2 umnumzaans, a couple medfords, etc. 🙃🙃🙃

To kind of add to what your saying- maybe the problem is we know they are capable of the things we love and want (fidgety), but they refuse to take the risk and make something. Keep selling the usual knives but also make some new stuff. I feel like Chris reeve left the company with the tilock as a statement his company hasn’t picked up on.

I own a Large Sebenza 21 and I honestly do not see it as my best or favorite knife. That title goes to a CH knife. The CH 3513-green with M390 steel, Annodized-Ti frame-lock with steel on steel insert / machined pocket clip. The CH cost me US$135 at the time and it is a daily carry that has held up perfectly well over the last few years. A very smooth flipper with an excellent detent, its fit and finish...on par with these so-called grail knives. Sure, the Sebenza is a knife that should last a life-time, but for the same money I can buy 5 x CH3513's that should last 5 lifetimes. I liked the CH so much, I bought two more; one for my brother-in-law (CH3513-silver) and the other for my nephew (CH 3507-silver). I prefer to spend my money this way...than dump it all again on one Sebenza. In my humble opinion. PS: Another excellent CH knife is the CH3504...Ti frame-lock with SV35N blade steel. Ergonomics are fantastic for my large hand. Another notable, the Kizer Toro.
