I started painting recently in my sixties and this is how I look at the wash or first colors I put on the canvas, it looks like magical places that I’ve never seen before. I had no idea what it was called. Thank you

Awesome to hear that you've started painting! I hope that you continue to enjoy it as much as I do. 😀 I'm totally with you, watching that first wash dry and settle in a unique way every time is just properly magical! Thanks so much for your comment. 🙂

Same here. Started painting, sketching, just about anything in my sixties. Lockdown was extremely depressing with going through so many things all at once. I think art was the only thing that kept me sane. When someone says he/she is having fun with painting or sketching I have a different reaction. Art is keeping me alive and sane. I wonder if anyone understands my state of mind.

Hey Zenmaster. I hear you. I'm sorry that you had such a difficult time through lockdown and I'm glad that art helped you to keep things moving. I don't think that you're alone in your experience; I suspect that we'll still be coming to understand the societal-wide mental health impacts of the last couple of years for quite some time. I'm happy that art has a role in your life that's positive at the moment and I appreciate you sharing your experience. Wishing you the very best. 🙏

Absolutely! I've nothing against realism as a genre or as skillset and I've a lot of respect and admiration for artists who put the other hours to recreate things as they are. Personally, I find fun in taking existing elements to weave something completely new. Thank you 😁

You spoke to my soul, to my very core. My art and I went through a hard, painful, relieved and freeing process to end up, well...here. To paint as I follow my flow. 💜 It still takes me practice to maintain my trust in my flow but I am getting there. I am grateful I found you and your video in this very moment. 💜 To everyone out there: enjoy the time discovering your flow with curiosity and love, its an amazing process. 💜

I never knew this had a name. And the name is so fitting, as well. Flow state. I've always loved the first washes but something in me has always made me discard them, thinking that they're not real finished pieces. You've just opened a new portal for me. Thank you so much. I love the editing and the whole aura of both this video and you.

The youtube algorithm has started to get spookily accurate. I recently bought my first watercolor tube paints and this morning I took the time to open them all, swatch a few and the tubes that overflowed a bit ended up in the palette and with those 10 chance colors I made up a scene just to not waste paint and to get a feel for them. When I did art as a kid it was always out of my imagination and still I wish to be able to make fantasy art in whatever way my journey takes me as a beginner at art as an adult. I hear a lot advice to draw what you see and it's solid advice but I also feel reassured that this art you just shared is a possibility for my journey too. To kind of just get lost in creativity and see where it takes you. Thanks for sharing this, it was beautiful in more ways than 1. I feel inspired. 💜

I really appreciated this video. I came to a similar conclusion (revelation?) with my art recently, letting the flow state take over and letting the project itself determine what the end result will be. It sounds crazy if you haven't experienced it yourself, but it definitely feels like "discovering" what the piece wants to be, rather than shaping it to your will. Not sure why YT recommended this, but glad it did, and now you've earned a new subscriber.

Lovely artworks! I have been painting with watercolors since I was 10 years old. My Gran got me started and I have never stopped, I did take a 15 years break from paint on paper into digital painting. I had to go digital to keep working in the graphic design field ! I am now over 60 and I paint whatever I wish and I do paint places from my mind that might not actually exist in the "real" world! I also paint my dog who is in this real world and is a wonderful part of it! I wish you continued success and joy in painting. Thank you for sharing your paintings with us.

This is a great theme to explore. I am described as a "surrealist" by most but I'm not sure if I agree. To put it as plainly as possible, I really enjoy the search for a resonance...I don't know what I'm looking for, but I'm internally certain when I find it. It only lasts for a moment though. My work is then the process of trying to reanimate it for as long as possible, bring it back to life within myself so I can draw it out onto the canvas, into the real world, take it from a hazy feeling to a solid form. Over the years I've been able to do this for increasingly long periods, I'm able to hold that "flow" and come back to it almost daily. That process is what I am really engaged in, that's the enjoyable part... the paintings are just a by product of that. Cool video, thanks for sharing! And nice work btw!

The artist proves to be such an amazing character in this story of life. Amazing tools. Amazing techniques. And you articulate your points so well. Love the depth of connectivity between your art and your dreams. That sense of objects being within one's grasp, and, yet, ever so elusive; I've experienced such. And I love it when the artist paints a scene that is so appealing, it makes the spectator longs to be there, and witness the whole experience. You really emerge yourself into your work. Hey Tia! Great to hear that you enjoy a similar approach. I know what you mean, it's not quite the same but I sometimes enjoy encorporating at least borderline 'other-wordly' looking features. Rays of light up into the sky, things like that; it's an inspiration I picked up from Roger Dean's art. Someone else in the comments here managed to pick up on it and nail the specific artist as well which blew my mind a bit. 😄 I hope that your painting goes great, I really appreciate your comment. 🙂

Thank you so so much for sharing this and your beautiful art! I’ve been feeling this for a while and you’ve put to words exactly what I wanted to say!!! I feel that surly it’s important to practice places for technical ability such as painting many portraits, but surely that’s just for theoretical practice. I truly believe in my heart that the power of art is when the artist is able to express an idea that is fresh, new and the most beautiful thing is that there is no need to completely invent as one can make a new landscape by distorting for instance the sea, the sky, putting currents here instead of there, an object here, a new one there, etc birthing something completely new 💙💙💙

I'm new to this channel. The part where you talk about your dreams and how the paintings describe something just out of grasp, is very similar to how I feel about my art and art I want to make and I guess I've never heard anyone else describe it so similarly or put it into words. I feel like my art and imagery I work with leans toward memories I've had as a child but changed or constructed over time. And everytime I sit down to paint, I'm chasing something that's not fully visible to me and I'm always trying to express that feeling. Idk. Anyways your work is beautiful. New sub.

Thank you for making this. I was really inspired by how the pace of the video illustrate the main point, as I see it, of your monologue, in such a beautiful way. Almost as a way of highlighting it and saying that it is OK to go with the this intuition, this feeling, this state; I find myself longing for it. I also really enjoyed watching your process, especially the frame making as I want to experiment more with that myself. I really appreciate your content! You have a new follower.

Wow! New subscriber, click. I absolutely love what you had to say about flow. Not sure I would have understood it until I experienced it however. I began "art"again in my life as a way of healing from some recent trauma... Flow has become my quiet space, where I want to be, a safe place where I can be myself and share of myself on canvas or on paper and express myself with no shame. Thank you for sharing!

First, I must say the what i saw just in this first video of yours that I've seen...just....wow! The colors and wild movement...just love it so much!! I only began teaching myself drawing then painting in my early-mid 40's as a need to deal with some things inside and not with meds. But I quickly fell in love with watercolor because as much as I try hard to keep control of many things in life, mostly myself, watercolor took that option away, but it was so beautiful I didn't care. I could just blob on some water and add a tiny bit of color and just watching it move was so mesmerizing that all the other junk in my head disappeared for a bit. As I learned more and got older, almost 50 no, and a small bit better (I'm not good at it my any stretch, so please don't think I'm saying that) but it was then that I tried to be more precise and have lost my joy a bit. So I need to get back to just the pure enjoyment of watching the paint move in the water...not worrying if it looks like this or that.....you're very right. Thank you for the reminder...now I just have to make myself do it ;) But your work is breathtaking! I just subscribed and can't wait to go through older videos and also to see what comes next!!! Thank you!!

Thank you so much for such an uplifting comment. I fell in love with watercolours in a similar way - there's an element of control that they take away from me which means if I'm to get on board with the process, I just have to go with it and let them do their thing; it's something that I want to talk in more detail about in the future. One of the magical things about a watercolour painting is how it always manages to look different to how you expect once it's dried. I sometimes feel like it paints itself and I'm just along for the ride. 😀 I hope that you enjoy painting again and find the excitement and the fun in the process. I appreciate your support; lots more to come. 🙂 Have a great weekend.

@@TimSchofieldArt i feel the same...its one thing as I feel it done but wet, then boom, a different vibe completely once dry! Sometimes its fun, Sometimes a bit frustrating....but always interesting for sure! And I can't wait until I have both arms working and can really get back into it....I miss it somewhere deep inside that I hadn't even realized this completely :) once I heal, I'll be back at it. One day I want to get some of those hake brushes, but it will be a good while to save. I'll seen others, but not as good of reviews and these don't seem available on Amazon anymore..maybe later ;) Is that mdf you paint on? If use foam core which is nice because it light, but can bend sometime, which isn't good :) but does the water affect the wood? I love your set up by the window...mine is just my dinning table, but I've very thankful for that :) I also like that you sign in black ink with a dip pen! So many said I had to sing in the same medium, which I found difficult. I look forward so seeing what comes next!!!!!!!! :

This is…a lot like how I’ve done landscapes. Just…focus and a feeling. Usually paired with music or a movie in the background. My favorite one was done with my friends binge watching the witcher while i painted. The painting at the beginning reminded me of painting the trees in that one, or rather, of the feeling I had when painting them.
