This is a great video! I love the points you made because they are so true! I hope more people will look at both the pros and cons of tiny house living. I was that person who DREAMED of living in a teeny tiny house, but after living in a 400sq ft place with my partner, I realized how important empty spaces (especially more elbow room) and having separate spaces are. I don't cook or bake a lot, but man, having a small kitchen has a huge impact on how stressful/relaxed my experience will be! I'm a minimalist so I have very few items compared to most people, but since everything is condensed into one small area, my house always feels cluttered. However, I think if you are a single person, the kind of person who can live out of a suitcase, or someone that likes to travel, a tiny home would be a smart option!

I really enjoyed hearing your points on tiny house living because they were ones I hadn't heard before and were very realistic! A lot of them I hadn't thought of before, but they make so much sense, such as needing your own space and not being able to cook together in a tiny kitchen. I've seen HGTV small houses and a couple tiny house builders. I agree what you said about the 600-800 square feet of smaller living versus tiny house living. While I like the innovative organizational spaces that are shown in tiny house living, overall, tiny house living doesn't seem realistic in an everyday, all year round living for me either. Smaller spaces allow you to be more conscious of trying to have less stuff while still having space to breathe. I am an introvert too and work from home. In a tiny house, I think I would feel very claustrophobic and be on edge because I wouldn't have my own space to even lay out and read by myself. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on tiny house living!

I find tiny homes interesting, and I feel like there's a lot to be learned about clever use of space from their construction but like you I wouldn't want one myself. I know it wouldn't work for my needs - kitchen space for example. I love cooking and baking and a big kitchen is kind of a must for me. I've lived with a tiny kitchen before and it was so cramped! I don't feel the need to a giant, spacious house in my life but luckily there's a middle ground between the two.

For me kitchen has to be a separate room with a window. Whether it's in an apartment or in a house. I hate kitchen+living room open space combo.

agree with everything you said. I work from home which does require a completely separate office and my partner has a side gig designing video games as well as a collector so he needs a room for that. My job requires me to have a lot of equipment for myself and staff (4 kayaks) and we have a lot of pets. We keep it simple by having a townhouse at just over 1100 sq feet and its perfect. Most importnant in our area the land our small group of townhomes is on is increased density over the previous land use, one house became 8 townhouses. In my area taking land away from agriculture is a big issue so we are happy to contribute to a more liveable city.

I like the idea behind a tiny home - that it’s made sustainably, but could never live in one. For the same reasons as you, I like to have space myself and for my family and friends to enjoy and would want to have land for gardening. I also don’t like to feel constricted

I became really interested in tiny homes 5 years ago and dreamed of building one. I moved into a 312 sf apartment and 4 and half years later I am growing tired of it. The thought of have more space to move around in, dance in, entertain in is so appealing. I feel envious when I go to my friends apartments because they have a bedroom. Haha. I have realized tiny homes are not for me, but I’m happy I tried it out for a good chunk of time. Even though I don’t have a lot of stuff it feels like I do and things feel cumbersome.

I get the impression that these Tiny Home people are in a competition: who can live in the fewest square feet, how many babies and toddlers can they pack in, etc. All holier-than-thou showing off. My ideal for a house is 500 sq ft + a 200 sq ft walk-out basement. You can fit 2 (8x10) tiny bedrooms, a few closets, kitchen/living, 1 bath, maybe stackable laundry. Downstairs would have mechanical, storage, freezer, and 1/2 bath to hide from storms.

I totally get the points you make, but I can’t shake my love for tiny homes. I’ve been considering the design for years so I think I know how to make it work and I’ve had experience staying in small places with a SO, but we were pretty good at being alone together. Empty space can make me nervous and I like having exactly what I need because I feel like the space is really mine. One thing though is I’d be terrible at living in a tiny home in a big city. I’m hoping for at least an acre to roam on.

Tiny home is not new to some people, and it's NOT for everyone. Used to live in a tiny house during my younger days. Only 1 bathroom, 2nd level is a mezzanine as the bedroom. Takeaway is if you're gone all time 16 hours M-F at work, and nimble to climb up the tricky stairs then it's ok I guess. There was no PRIVACY at all. Thank you for your honesty. Great video!

I agree with this. I do like how the smaller the house is the more it pushes you to be less materialistic and I hate how obsessed our society has become with housing. I think I'd really enjoy living in a tiny house/appartment as a single person, but with my husband and two kids it would ideally want to be a little bigger. We are building a 100sm house but I still love watching tiny house videos, it makes our small house seem huge!

Interesting, amd certainly some valid points that also show what an individual decision it is. We enjoy spending a lot of time on boats and find we have no trouble with the things you mention - we cook together quite easily and each of us can use headphones/earplugs for separate time (I also need my me-time!). I also knit and it's no problem at all, but then boats are cleverly designed (and lots of storage!) so my husband can work at the plotting desk while I use the main table, or one of us can brush teeth at the pantry sink while the other uses the bathroom etc. Also there are two or three cabins plus the living area which is set up for sleeping, too, so our unsynchronised sleeping is not a problem either... Obviously, what suits us doesn't necessarily suit everyone or you, but we find we rub along very well in a small, tidy space that is well organised and conceived! And then there is also outside space, of course... Btw, our house is also quite small (not tiny) but on three floors so feels huge and we frequently need to search for each other or look for the dog lol!

Excellent points! Both my husband and I work from home too and would run into issues with space S my work is sewing and my husband takes emergency calls so my machine needs to be well away. Plus we have a toddler that needs sleep! But I love the idea of creating small home that's completely efficient with energy and space. Living in a rental it's a shame how much space goes wasted because we can't customize it. So I think I would want to go somewhere inbetween. A permanent house, with a small footprint which allows full functions of a larger house with possibly more outside living spaces. I love all of the creative details and love that goes into tiny homes and I would love to put that much effort into my own home.

My husband and I are living in a tiny apartment, around 33square meters. It works, but it is not ideal for us. We are students and chose this home because it was affordable for us at the time. Your reasons for not living in a tiny home really resonated with me, as I made the same experiences over the years we lived in our apartment. Our hobbies take up the little floor space we have, we need to put up our laundry to dry in the one room we have, which blocks the light from the window. We only have one working desk and would like two and we would love to have friends over for tea sometimes. 10 square meters more would be ideal for us, I think. I hope we can find a place soon. :)

I so much agree with your points! I used to live 20 sq m room with roommate and it was... well, difficult. With different schedules, different food choices (meaning cooking at the same time on the tiny kitchen) and me having to study at nights. Now I live with my parents in bigger house and oh gosh its so nice to be able to work and eat at night!

I lived with my boyfriend in a teeny tiny 1 piece studios during 7 years! We were poor students so a cheap appartment let us have enough money to do activities :) . While it was fun the time it last, after all this time we were feeling like we needed more space! The good in this experience is that we now know we don't need a big house with a lot of stuff to be happy, but we definitly need more than a tiny house even if it looks awesome! It is possible to live the lifestyle of a tiny house in a regular house :) (btw, now that we moved out of the studio, i realised that I really missed doors!!)

These are absolutely valid reasons for not wanting to live in a tiny house! I personally would not because we are a homeschooling family and need a little room for books and work space. We don’t need a seperate room for it, we are still very minimalistic about it. I only have one child right now so a lot of room isn’t needed. Books are stored in a orettth dinning room cabinet cupboards on bottom and we do it at the dinning table. We tried a desk in the computer room but found they were not too comfortable amd my daughter works better at the table. I could. Or spend my days in a space this small also because we have hobbies that need a little room and also love to cook! We utilize all our space in a 1100 sq ft home with a yard, and we love it! We have plans to optimize closets by building shelves into them as dressers to allow for an expanding family (expecting number 2!) comfortably while in a smaller space. So, we still live on the minimal side of life regarding space and stuff!

My motivations are similar to yours, I'm a freelancer, live with my boyfriend and am introverted. That said, when we moved from a 45 square meters rented flat to a 80 sm (which is quite average in Italy) semi-detached house, it seemed like a real upgrade. And yet, after some years it started to feel a bit cramped. There wasn't enough space to store our stuff (even when decluttering regularly) or to hang posters and art, only one bathroom!, not enough elbow room... Three months ago we moved to my family house we just renovated, it's 130 sm plus the basement and it just feels great. We have room for a record player and to display photos, two bathrooms and a big shower, stuff is more in order and the sensation overall is to be able to... breathe. And also... we are getting a golden retriever since now we can. So I don't really get the charm of tiny places. I mean, they're super cute but live there 365 days a year? No thanks. I think minimalism is great and it has helped me be more selective and mindful, but stuff is different from living spaces. Just my 2 (euro) cents.

You brought up good points here, many of which have crossed my mind at least once. Tiny homes are idealistic but for many they may not be realistic. It's great you got to "wade into it" through airbnbs. This is something I want to do, that is, staying in a tiny home short-term, before I consider house hunting for the ling-term. I also have many hobbies and possessions that require space. Since my friend introduced me to the concept & culture of tiny living, though, I have started looking at my things differently. Coupled with your channel, the goal of (maybe) someday having a tiny has significantly helped me to curb my shopping urges and to re-evaluate my stuff. Then, like you mentioned, it would be fine if one has a tiny all to oneself but a significant other complicates things. I know that if I had a partner, unless they're on the same page, a tiny home likely would not work out. But that would not deter me from wanting one for a designated personal space! Great video. Thank you!

I feel like the wide angle lenses they film them in for the shows make them look and feel bigger than they really are. You’re right they would be a challenge to navigate with multiple people , and I’m a ‘hand talker’ so it would also be dangerous. Haha! xx

Agreed! I'd be miserable in a tiny house with no space to myself, no chance of watching separate tv shows, and my husband is a very light sleeper with severe insomnia... We live in a small 2 bedroom apartment and it works for us. I'm not sure what the square footage is... maybe 800? We definitely could get by with a 1 bedroom, but the extra bedroom is nice for office space/extra storage. Also... winter in Canada. Enough said.

I've been intrigued by the tiny home movement, and while I think they look really cute and have some really clever architecture to maximize living space, I'm not sure how I would feel living in one. I don't need many rooms, but I need a spacious kitchen and pantry because I love to cook and try out new recipes, and I haven't seen a tiny home that has a large enough kitchen for my taste.

I need personal space, have hobbies that take space (sewing, knitting etc .like you + my husband has desktop computer, playstation, xbox etc) and I like also having designated rooms/areas. I find I sleep better if my bedroom is dedicated for sleep and not crammed with other things for example. We live in a place now just over 900 sq. feet and we find it perfect for us. I think they're really cute but agree, they're just not practical for me. I like being able to have a wall between me and my partner so I can have alone time. Also, I can't imagine that tiny homes would be economical in colder climates, it must take more energy to heat them than an apartment, where if you're not on the ground floor you get the benefit of heat rising from neighbours below.

I love the idea of a tiny home for a vacation or a cottage. I think I would enjoy that. I currently live alone in a small studio apartment and rarely have more than 1 more person over. This space works for me. However, what I also like is because it is an apartment building I don't have to deal with property taxes and upkeep in the same way I would with a home of any size. So for that reason I wouldn't want a tiny home even though I like living in a small space.

I had a family member recently tell me that she was surprised I wasn't living in a tiny house by now since I have more of a minimalist lifestyle. The thing is, a tiny house is still a HOUSE - it's a big responsibility and although some of them can be moved, it keeps you more or less in one place. I'm comfortable in small apartments because I get antsy and move pretty often and it's much easier to move or change things up when you're just renting an apartment. Tiny houses aren't for all minimalists!

Good reasons which I totally share. I think tiny houses are on the extreme end of minimalism. I am a minimalist but not an extreme one, have my own comfort zone when it comes to the number of things I own. And my partner is not even that minimalist ;) so for us it is no goal or dream to live in a tiny house -it’s just one way of minimalist living.

I think the same as you do if I lived by myself then a tiny home would work well. We also have different sleep schedules. I tend to go to bed early and wake up early, where Matt goes to bed later and sleeps a little later. We live in a pretty big house, which I feel is a waste of space, but I love our house. We finished the basement after we moved in and we use it as a gaming/entertainment room. We have people over and eat down there. Upstairs we have a large bedroom, but Matt uses the extra space for weights. I do love having more than one bathroom. We lived in a small apartment for a while and we were always having to use the bathroom at the same time. We have two guest bedrooms. My father-in-law rents one of the rooms for us and comes to stay for 3-4 weeks a few times a year, so it's his room and no one uses it but him. The other room is our spare room for family and friends, but right now I'm fostering kittens and the mom in the room. So we use a lot of our house, but we could compress the space easily. I don't think we'll move before retirement though.

Myself and my spouse (assuming we remain married, jury is out on that) both are disabled. A tiny home just does not work for us. They’re inaccessible, cramped, and I get claustrophobic. It’s a nice idea but it requires a certain amount of privilege and untetheredness to make work. I also have a child and as she grows she’s going to want more privacy and personal space. I also value alone time and a tiny house just won’t make that feasible.

I like the idea of tiny houses and for some people they work. Mostly for people living alone. I do not think I could live in less than 1000 square feet. 2 dogs, a cat, a husband and we are trying to have children. I also sew a lot so with kids and dogs I need a door to shut to keep them out of there.

Probably most of those tiny home owners don't really live there. They're vacation homes. A lot build one on their parents' land, and have access to electricity, water, and sewers, so they are more of a convenience. If you look at the kitchens in the videos, it looks like no one cooks in there. The living rooms only have a bench with some cushion on it, and it looks uncomfortable, so it's hard to believe anyone lives there. What you said about hobbies...I thought about that too, and you can't really store stuff for your interests at all.

I don't like the concept of a tiny house, because it's often promoted with the premise "Can't afford a big house? Buy a tiny one!" But first, there are other options between an unnecessarily huge house and a tiny one, and second, I feel like it's promoted to discourage people from questioning the state of the economy and why many things become less and less affordable. I wouldn't want to live in a tiny house: I have a cat, and she needs some space. We also play music instruments, and having a piano and three guitars in a tiny space is unrealistic. :) And what if you sprain your foot? You want be able to reach your bed! I live in a studio apartment with my boyfriend, and it's more or less okay, but we had to create a separate space for his workplace in a niche, because we couldn't work in the same room. And he likes playing the piano at night... :D

I agree with you. For 1 person it‘s ok, but lifting with an other person in such a small space isn‘t for me.

I find tiny homes cool, but too sparse, much along the lines of why it won't work for you. As an architecture student, I developed a real love for the shipping container model. They are stackable, transportable depending on how they're constructed, as long as they're recycling containers that would otherwise be trashed they are fairly eco friendly on materials, and they grant in the area of 1000sqft if I remember correctly. Big enough for separate rooms, but certainly not a big house.

I get you, it doesn’t fit your lifestyle, but for others it would be perfect 👌🏻

My 2 bedroom apartment is not that big but not tiny at all, even tho I feel I need a bit more space for example during cooking or when my bf is watching a game on tv and I'm on the bedroom sometimes I can listen the whole thing haha I don't think I'd be happy on a tiny home even when they look so cute and cozy

For one person , a tiny jome may be enough if all ypu do is live their , but if you do anything else like a business , no. Pu wpuld have to have a lot of muilty functional items and converables to not feel claustrophobic or I sure would. So if i had murphy bed and a table that goes from coffee to eating i.e...... what would i do with art.... . To have one is by far better than nothing so if I could I would have one with solar...... and my grandson.

Two tiny homes that share a living room? Yeah! We have separate offices. It's what works for us. I need somewhere to exercise. . .I don't need a lot of space, but I don't want to move furniture around to make enough space.

I don't want to live in one (I'm a dance teacher and I need space to prepare my classes! I already work in a very small space, can't do smaller), but I love watching them on Instagram! #tinyhousestalker

I like the idea but I don't think it's realistic for me. Thanks for these points. I don't like the cramped up feeling.

Tiny houses are stupid. There I said it. Most of the ones I see on TV and blogs are all by themselves on some big plot of land that could easily house a dozen families. heating and cooling a small one room building with 4 exterior walls is so much more expensive than heating and cooling a studio apartment with other apartments on all sides and above and below. Building 20 separate freestanding small houses also uses way more building materials than building a 20 unit apartment building. Plus the tiny houses have super low ceilings, dangerous, inaccessible (for anyone with even a minor disability) stair/ladders to their second floor lofts, they are just cutesy little play houses for 20-somethings. Not sustainable realistic housing for aging in place.

lestrange I was thinking the same thing. City living and use of public transportation ( or bike or walking) are more environmentally friendly.

That's a good point, if you compare them to apartments the apartments definitely have sustainability advantages. I think it's generally easy to find a studio/small apartment though but I assume most people that live in or want tiny homes do it because they want property/a yard and a classic "house", just smaller?

That's the thing- most young people want to live in cities where there are jobs, restaurants, things to do, and culture. Detached, one story homes, no matter how tiny, are not a feasible solution. It creates sprawl that extends an urban area into rural land. Where are we supposed to grow food when all the farmland is developed into suburbs? If you took all the people from a medium rise apartment building, and build enough 1-story tiny houses to house all of them, it wastes so much land! It pushes people further and further from their jobs, which means wasting more fuel to commute to work. This is not a green lifestyle at ALL.

But they also want everything a city can give: culture, night life, proximity to workplace, etc. The tiny house trend is marginally better than a big house but it's still very wasteful and not environmentally friendly at all. I don't even really think they want land, at least judging by the tv shows, because they all want their tiny house to be on wheels so they can take it anywhere.
