I want to start this comment off with no one should downgrade their GPU. No one, do not listen to this guy. One of the fans not spinning might have to do with some weird PNY zero rpm thing but yeah the RMA was probably warranted. The biggest thing with having an overkill GPU like a 7900XT(X) or 4080 or higher is you can lock your frame rate to either 60/90/120 or whatever and have (generally) less power consumption as the card doesn't have to work as hard. Personally I run at 70 fps as I always have and now with AFMF, if i want to turn it on, I get double the smoothness for like 5-10watts of extra power. Recording is stupidly simple with either AMD's built in software using AV1 or even OBS if you wanna go that rout. Same with nvidia, they both preform the job and do it easily. As far as the exporting/scrubbing and all that goes, unless you just have a hard on for the very best computer parts any 4000 GPU (and 3000 tbh) will preform about the same in your exports and if the program has quick sync then you don't need a nvidia GPU at all. I get what you are saying with selling and buying and making a profit but that only goes one way as nvidia is stupidly overpriced on the used market. So while you can go mid range nvidia to high end AMD you can't go high end AMD to high end nvidia (in most markets). Edit: Also for your water cooled card, it is super cool (har) you like it, but anything that has an AIO on it - or that you install (like a CPU aio) has a finite life (usually less than 5 years). For the average consumer that doesn't buy and sell cards all the time STAY AWAY FROM GPUS WITH AIOs they will always be more trouble than they are worth in the long run. You can buy new fans for GPUs, you can't buy new pumps/liquid (unless you make your own but good luck with that).

I was never in the market for a 4090 but I always thought the 4080 was the perfect amount of performance but the price was just way too high. Thankfully my friend found me a crazy good deal on a 4080 prebuilt PC as vendors were getting rid of them right as the 4080 supers were being released.

The way you argue this is so insanely weird to me. Why would anyone else downgrade if they already have the higher one if they are not in your situation where it broke down? No one should downgrade again if they own a good card, unless they are struggling hard with money and need to sell something. Other games are still a thing and if you already have a good one, just stick with that, selling it is likely a money loss in the long run when you keep in mind that other games keep getting harder for pcs to handle over the years. You should probably rename the video to something like "Why I Downgraded My Graphics Card for FFXIV - And Why A Lower Card Is Just Fine"

It might still be worth it, when a 4080 costs 900 to 1000 bucks and now you can sell a 4090 for around 1500-1600, when at the end of the year, you will see it drop to 900-1000. And 4080 might just Lose around 300 bucks of value. So if the performance is enough, you light actually gain money and have more available for the new generation

I upgraded my GPU from an AMD Radeon RX 6600 Eagle 8gig to an AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT 16Gig. I wanted to make sure that I will not have any issues with the graphics for FFXIV or any other games I play on PC. I also upgraded my CPU from an AMD Ryzen 7 3700x to an AMD Ryzen 9 5950x. I'm so ready to play Dawntrail now. :D

You would get the same performance from a 5900X or 5800X or 5600X (at same clocks, most hit around the same with PBO2 enabled) as XIV doesn't use more than 12 threads. You should have gone with a 5800X3D as that would have actually let you have around 20-30% better 1% lows and a touch more average frame rate.... Also it probably would have cost a lot less than a damn 5950X. The 7800XT is a good choice though (also it only comes in 16Gb so you really don't need to say that part.)

@@Azureskies01 At the time the 5950x was on sale for about the same price as the 5800x3d. I also play other games other than FFXIV. So I didn't just upgrade for FFXIV but for the other games I would get in the future.

Now if you would have said you do CPU intensive things like blender or whatever then sure THAT is a reason to have gotten the 16 core chip.... but not saying "i play other stuff" as that other stuff would run better with the other part.

Nvidia doesn't really care about the gaming market anymore. This is why the 40 series prices were so high, and why they stopped producing the (at the time) much cheaper 30 series cards. 40 series cards generally collect dust in computer store shelves. At least the 4080 price has dropped to 3080 Ti levels.

i play on a laptop with a 4050, gets pretty warm but not like....too hot, runs consistently above 60 (except limsa at peak hours maybe i drop to like 55 maybe)

Used to use a 1070ti and now using a 3070ti because it was what was available, I will say that the card runs hotter and is not very efficient which is not great for a game that is often open in the background while I'm doing other things, even if I'm limiting frames heavily while in the background. I won't bother with the entire 40xx generation completely, but I can't imagine going to another one just for this game. If anything, I'd probably go to Radeon because this game is unlikely to support DLSS or any serious raytracing.

The only reason you'd need a 4090 is for the extra vram with huge mobs of people... if you ever done Fate chain runs with hundreds of people & the boss never renders in is why you might want to keep your 4090 or if it is an event you're recording for a video.

Stange tho that full city with graphics maxed out on my 4080 super - CPU 12% and GPU 30% 70-90 fps in 1440p.. So there is a defo problem with the engine..

FF 14 really doesn't need a fast graphics card, it even runs at 60 FPS on the Steam Deck. Because my current graphics card broke, I currently have my old GTX 970 (10 years old) installed in my computer (AMD Ryzen 7800X3D) and 1080P and WQHD runs smoothly at 60 FPS. I bet with FSR I could also play smoothly in 4K with the 970. Current graphics cards (>4070 NVIDIA or >7800 XT AMD) therefore certainly total overkill for the game. The graphics engine is extremely well optimized. FF 14 even used to run on the PlayStation 3, a console from 2006 that only had 256 MB of RAM.

Aber von der Stromaufnahme her sollte sich nicht wirklich was getan haben. Die 4090 hat halt weniger Usage. Ergo nimmt sie sie sich auch bei dir nicht all zu viel Strom mit deinen settings. Die 4080 hat dafür einen höheren Usage, wie die 4090. FPS/ Performance mässig gibts nichts besseres wie eine 4090.

Eorzea 2024 - should we use RTX 4080 or 4090? Also would a Lalafell use a lower resolution and smaller screen (same DPI)? There is rather little reason to push RTX 4090 and if someone isn't in need right now - wait for the next gen - either the new cards or lower prices on existing ones. I moved from RTX 3070 to RX 6950 XT due to sales AMD started. I payed less for 4950 XT than 3070 and I bought the RTX before prices went crazy. I would also not recommend any water cooled GPU kits unless someone already has experiences with them. I had one and it was quieter on water than air for the GPU but it did require maintenence. In the end I run air on an open "test bench" and with open airflow I see much lower noises/heat than in a typical case that isn't all mesh and fans.

Guys please take note. If like me you do Rendering 3D,Deep learning this is worth it to have a 4090. But for love of the gods even you are content creator shouldn't buy a 4090. Doug Doug a big content creator have work for 6 years with a 1070 and they just upgraded for a 4070, many features about high end pc is not all exploited by many games this is a waste of money. Again i am a owner of a 4090 and a Nvidia A100.

They are keeping the game on PS4 (and for whatever reason coming out on the fucking xbox series S), I think many people over exaggerate what the new graphic requirements will be. So your PC will be 100% fine for the next 10 years unless they cut PS4 and Shitbox (series S) support. That isn't to say they wont redo the lighting engine and really make it super demanding at the highest settings but nothing will *stop* you from playing on that set up for another decade.

@@Chronesys If you know how to clone drives you don't have to do anything but get a SSD and clone that 2012 drive over. Also the CPU for minimum requirements for DT on steam is the 6700 which your 7600 is close enough to. You won't be running at high frame rates (stuff over 60 fps) but it should be fine. The Recommended Specs for DT are in fact the 9700 but That is probably to have a stable 60+ fps in all situations. The game is still having to be made for last gen consoles and the series S so if your PC was made in the last 5-10 years you will be fine. You might want to upgrade to get better frame rates (or more consistent anyway) but you wont *have to* upgrade

Honestly the graphics update isn't as big as people are saying it is. It's not like when warcraft updated its models. If I show my wife the before and after photos for FF14s graphic updates she can't even tell which is better lol

Don't be worried, the game is still going to be on PS4 and coming out on the weak ass xbox series S. The way I see them going is just fix up the code of the game to maybe get a bit better optimization but have settings that you can enable to really make it look better if you have the hardware to run it. If not the game "should" act just like it does now. People are overhyping what they are going to be able to do because of the consoles imo. Look for better lighting/shadows, texture resolution to go up if you have the video memory to enable them and hopefully some under the hood stuff to make it run better in general.

Adding a "and why you might do it too" when mentioning downgrading from 4090 to 4080 might require a little reality check. Aiming for 4090 when playing ffxiv is absolutely bananas for 99.9% of the playerbase. That is not even mentioning that most people won't even be able to splash that much on the gpu in the first place. Honestly it's so strange, I'm not even sure what to think of this.

lol the fan of the 4090 was not broken, it does't turn when its not neeeded. If you ran a synthetic benchmark to push the gpu to 100% the fan will kick in.
