I wouldn't consider myself a very bright person, but I am extremely curious, and this channel is really good at peaking my curiosity with great illustrations and real world examples. I do wish you'd break your content down into series though, feels like you're cramming a lot into one video. Love your content so far!
@very-normal2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion! Trying to optimize the way I make content is something I’ve always been struggling with. Can I ask you what you what you’d like to see in series style content? Do you feel like it’s the sheer density of concepts in a single video that’s troubling? I really appreciate the feedback!

@@very-normal I apologize for not replying sooner, and I agree with the other person to reply in reference to the frequency vs bayes probability video. Because sometimes you'd have formulas pop up or concepts pop up in your video that are pertinent to the video but aren't the the main character, and sometimes the audience would like a little more character development for the side characters. In this video the main character was the median and the side characters were those types of minimizing functions. Hope my metaphor was more helpful than confusing lol. Cheers.

Even doing self-study with decidedly undergraduate math, this is all excellent advice. Keeping notebooks as a mathematical toolbox is both cognitively powerful and satisfying. Looking things up online is great and all, but it can never compare to the feeling of Consulting Your Notes.

Yes so true! I learned this the hard way with barely any notes from my previous math or stats. Reading ur own notes just brings everything back to your mind so much faster. Same with redoing an old problem u solved.

As a graduate mathematics student, sure the ideas are simple, but they're critical to understanding mathematics or logic in general. I think most math majors (myself included) learn them de facto from courses such as undergraduate real variables where translating seemingly obscure topics to understandable ideas and making proofs like you describe "problem outlines" are the only actual tools for success. Always remember the people who came up with the theorems were also people and saw these results conceptually before applying their rigorous definitions and logic to them. Great content, with applicable ideas to undergrads!

I remember making a master cheat of everything I learned in multivariable calculus, but I carelessly threw it away, and I have times it would be great to look back on it. I’ve been trying to treat notes more like a living document since then.

I dont understand, how did you do a graduate program In biostatistics without a background in Math or Statistics? Is a bachelors in a relevant field not required?
@very-normal2 ай бұрын
the math from my engineering background was enough to get me into a masters program, and I took some PhD-level classes during masters to prep too, but in the end it probably wasn’t enough to fully prep me lol
@aleksajoksimovic2 ай бұрын
In my country, medical school is a 6 year programme after high school that essentially equals a master's degree (meaning you can go into a PhD programme afterwards if you're GPA is high enough). I'm currently a second year student but I'm really passionate about medical/biostatistics. Is the only way to truly get into that field properly to start over with a bachelor's in math/stat? I don't really understand how such a non-mathematical college (med school) can give students the opportunity to go into such a mathematical field without it being some sort of superficial application of software type thing, which would be very dissatisfying. Edit: I'm self studying a lot of college mathematics, but the med school courseload just doesn't allow for most efficient self-study. Would you say that someone can learn the necessary advanced math concepts in a masters or PhD programme, or do you need an undergraduate background in a mathematical field? PS. I love your videos and they really helped me understand the application of a lot of mathstat concepts I've been learning, please keep up the awesome work!

Where were you when I was in School 😢😢😢😢. Superb explanation, fear of not understanding the symbols and notations is the biggest hurdle to learn maths/stats. Btw, if you can explain Nayman Pearson lemma to a layman, that would be great. Not a single textbook or research article explains it well ( including Fisher’s 1933 and 1926) paper. A good technical video with good graphics should get a PhD degree.

Hi Christian. Are the advanced statistics courses you took available online? the questions you showed in the video are very interesting (asymptotic median distribution and linear regression MAE) would like to know which course of statistics to look for for that?
@very-normal2 ай бұрын
This type of course is graduate level Mathematical Statistics. The specific material this is from is chapter 5 from Asymptotic Statistics by van der Vaart. There is quite a bit of lecture material on this stuff online so you’d be able to see what’s out there!

I worked for a few years after graduating as an analyst, and I realized that all the people who I thought were the smartest people needed to go to the statistician to do their research. It made me think that biostatistics had a lot of job security, fit my lifestyle goals, and it was still adjacent to medical problems
