Brandon Staley and Kellen Moore use madden play recommendations and here's why
Comment below if you have any tape to point out I missed, or any other takes!
I know Staley and Telesco got fired already, it happened after I recorded so I'm glad they took my advice

I do want to clarify that for time's sake I cut out a chunk of myself dissecting the defensive play calls a bit deeper, 'man' and 'zone' are of course not a playcall, but they're just sitting in vanilla madden version of cover 2 or cover 3 depending on how many receivers they're facing, and otherwise they're just running cover 1 man. Didn't want to spend too much time on that section but that caused me to miss a piece of that explanation in hindsight

That’s called being carried by Aaron Donald to a HC jobs. Even his defense was consistently bad, which was supposed to be his expertise. Let alone the meme worthy game management and decision making. Even as a Chiefs fan who wanted the division to suck, what Staley did to this team is criminal offense. He wasted a stack team, he wasted Justin Herbert’s rookie window. He hired checkdown Joe Lombardi. He choked in the most embarrassing fashion maybe in Chargers history with that sole playoff game. Before that, he choked against a Raiders team with an interim OC and intended to play for the tie with the playoffs in line.

I had a good opinion of Kellen Moore (without deep diving into his offenses), until watching him as the Chargers OC... his plays are vanilla af, and his playcalling is just as predictable
@sethchism1204
@sethchism1204 Ай бұрын
I live in Boise so by default we root for him but before this year I knew it was crucial for him that the chargers to do well and the cowboys drop off a bit but the opposite happened and Moore is trending in the wrong direction. He's still seemingly respected in NFL circles but I think when he has good talent it works but I want to see him escalate the talent at his disposal rather than rely on it. Should do well with what he has in Philly though
@marrodc
@marrodc Ай бұрын
I think Kellen can still get better as he gets more experience since he hasn't been an OC for long, but he still doesn't seem to be great at it. The all curls and the lack of movement pre-snap were so infuriating as a Cowboys fan. He does have some great creativity at times, but it just seems like he doesn't trust that or that he doesn't have too deep of a bag in the creative department
@choosecarefully408
@choosecarefully408 Ай бұрын
I'm glad I returned to this video & caught this. Another analysis channel "tried to isolate" the reason for Dak's high INTs in '22. While trying not to bruise the egos of the people responsible I guess because they refused to _mention_ Moore's play-calling. But all one could see is receivers fanning out in patterns so predictable that defenders looked like they were *skating a choreographed routine along with them.* No difference in depth of receivers allowing the defense to concentrate on one area of the field. This forced Dak to throw as hard as he could to hope no one stepped in front of his passes, but it also caused receivers to bobble many of them. Surrounded as they were, any bobble would be torn away. So yeah, this was obviously Moore. There is So Much to unpack here. I've worked middle management & realized long ago how irrational business owners can be. It's like the kid who can only express his freedom via "freedom to destroy." They often don't feel like they're doing things right unless they feel they have _THAT freedom_ at all times. So they too often don't care. That's just one shade of ownership. In Chicago you have the other extreme where they are 100% hands off. They don't know the game & allowed all their GMs & coaches to do as they wilt. While for decades this meant gross incompetence by people who felt like nothing they did mattered, Poles & Eberflus are different animals. *They* are taking steps to make it "Their Team." Or at least what they feel like makes it theirs. We see similar things to the Chargers, but with more intent. They didn't "accidentally" cancel the plays that made them the #1 offense 3 weeks straight any more than they "accidentally" ignore their own o-linesmen constantly allowing pass rushers straight through to Fields so regularly, Fields never knows when it isn't coming. They want _"Their_ Pick" at QB. & if that meant sabotaging someone else's career, so what of it? I only wish more teams were able to see through all this. I can't believe that neither KOC nor Brian Daboll want Fields to elevate their teams for a lot less $ than trading to get a QB in the draft would cost them, then they could draft receivers for him. It's insanity.

@@RileyLinn no it was definitely telesco, he always went for star players over depth and that never works, you have to have depth and he never even tried to get any, not to mention his contracts and money handling were horrible, the chargers current cap issues are all because of telesco just backloading contracts which put Hortiz and harbaugh in a terrible spot. Telesco can’t draft to save his life either, all of his “hits” in the draft weren’t because of him, those players just so happened to fall into his lap, like Herbert, Derwin James, Bosa, Slater, all were projected to go earlier but just so happened to land with him. He can’t draft depth at all past round 3 besides maybe 1 or 2 guys over the last few years

It happened. New HC, new GM. With the start of free agency and the draft, it's time to farm content. The video said the main issue is roster building, after one week of free agency and before the draft is the easiest time to launch a video full of draft speculation. People eat those up and can't get enough. The main question is should the chargers trade down even if MH Jr. is still there at 5? should they trade down and draft a OT? Should their first two picks be OT and OC? Should they draft a X WR1 to replace QJ or a later rounds backup for when KA and Palmer get hurt? Should their picks be mostly in defense? Some of those will be made more clear after free agency. Now the weird thing about their playcalling on offense, is that this is the same criticism against the previous OC. You have to wonder if Herbert is at fault somewhat. Maybe all those no reads, just curls is what he does best, or at least, with an OL that gives less than 3s to make a pass. There's got to be an explanation for why two separate HC came to the same answer, that this was the best the offense they thought they could run.

As ABYSMAL as our season was, I’m finally glad to have moved on from the craziness into what looks to be acres of green pastures ahead. While I’m skeptical about Roman being are OC, I’m confident enough his play calling will be superior to that of “check down” Joe as we called him and Moore. Like you said, our run game was pedestrian at best, and I trust Roman to fix that instantly. Hell that signing of Gus already proves this. He never had much opportunity in Baltimore but since he’ll be our #1 most likely he’ll get plenty of action to spread his wings further. Also I’m eager to know what we’ll do with that 5th pick. The consensus amongst the fandom is that we’re likely getting Nabers, but given that Jim has stated a million times that football begins in the trenches, I could see us going for Alt or some other lineman, or even trading back with lets say Minnesota, swap our #5 with their #11 and #23. Thankfully even if we don’t get any of the Big 3 wideouts, this class is SOOO deep, we can snag some great talent in later rounds. It’s just so hype being a fan of this team. It sucked losing Keenan and Mike, but sometimes you gotta make the heartbreaking moves to try and compete.

Heh. Still not The QB Most sabotaged by his own coaches named Justin. Not even for the past three years. Part of me who has worked middle management has no trouble believing in this level of ineptitude. Another wonders when watching this if some coaches aren't in some illegal gambling ring where they bet on their own QBs getting sacked & injured & how many times.

I think he's liget one of the worst coaches of the last decade when you break down what the job of head coach entails He's a defensive coach who made defenses worse -as a game manager, he blows late game situations, chooses to go for it on 4th down almost randomly, and never has control of the situation. -as a leader and the face of the team he constantly embarrassed himself and the team during press conferences and public appearances

I'm predicting the Chargers are going to see a huge turnaround from Harbaugh like the 49ers did after we moved on from Singletary. The coaching just wasn't up to snuff and the roster was loaded with wasted talent. Herbert is going to have an amazing year with a solid run game and a killer defense. Our defense under Harbaugh is probably what I miss the most. He had them playing real old school, gritty defense. As good as Saleh and Ryans' defenses were, Harbaugh & Fangio coached impeccable fundamentals that you just don't see in the league anymore, for whatever reason.

It's like I likely said elsewhere on this page, NFL team owners are _business_ owners. They don't have a _clue what makes_ a coach good & when humans can't understand something, they not only don't _trust_ it: they try to view it in a comfortable, familiar way. Players = employees, coaches = supervisors. "You know who makes the best supervisors for business purposes? Not those friendly jovial ones like Rich Bisacchia that the employees like. The tyrants like Staley, Josh McD & Sean McDermott that they FEAR!" That's how they think, & they think this on a subconscious level where their fears of employees lives. When in reaction mode people can't think & these are Unthinking Decisions. Which of course the reaction then becomes to Never Doubt. The owner only knows that they now feel comfortable. Any thought of doubt takes them out of that state so they simply Refuse To Entertain Such Thoughts. If any of this rubs anyone the wrong way, then let's show it. We'll go to Any University Campus Anywhere U.S.A. tomorrow, ask any student studying federal law what laws are being broken by politicians accepting lobbying $, draw up the papers & bring charges to every member of congress who has ever voluntarily taken any. You can't even seriously consider it, right? Because Reaction Mode overtakes people & they See _politicians_ as 'Government Itself' & can't bring themselves to arrest _'Government'_ so they can't arrest politicians because people can't separate out those things.

I've seen them run stunts a lot in his last season and before but even with that..the problem in the Staley's defense is the CORE idea of it. The play needs to be the right one in order to work, he has said it before and before, he treats his defensive playcalling like a QB calling plays. It is supposed to be able to adjust on the fly against any offensive playcall...problem is, he CLEARLY does not know that offenses change playcalls based off of your defensive lineup and they are the ones to get to SNAP the ball. Staley's defense is too heavily dependent on reactionary rather than imposing hence why it fails when you do not have a monster like Aaron Donald rushing.

The San Diego Chargers (no we're not letting go) biggest issue is the upper front office. Same general issues that Atlanta had here. The operative goal needs to be: find someone with tools in their kit (Staley fails here) and knows when to use them jusidicously (Staley smh) , observes and can find strengths and weaknesses in opposing teams, makes proper in-game adjustments, commands a team. Your HC, OC and DC have to be like this and well-compensated via base and peformance pay to stay for a few years at minimum. No if/ands/buts. And be ready to step back but fully support from underneath.
