This video is my 3rd leg from Meridian, MS to Flagler, FL on a cross country flight from Denver, CO. We will be talking about why I like flying IFR, my only issue with the Dynon Skyview HDX, the Pros and Cons of my Trutrak Autopilot, my son speaks on the radios, and you don't want to miss out on the bloopers.

I get my 182RG back tomorrow. It has an Avidyne IFD 540, and I just had the full Dynon suite installed. Can't wait! I really enjoy your videos, it's great to see people enjoying general aviation with their family! Keep up the good work.

Congratulations! I think you are going to really enjoy the heck out of it. Many people are biased and stuck on Garmin but I have done much comparisons I’m all in on Dynon. But, as much as I want to put a Dynon in my Turbo Saratoga they refuse to certify the autopilot for the PA32 so I’m going to pass on them this time. Let me know how it goes once you fly around a bit.

Co-pilot Xavier: Talking on radio is an intimidating task for the student pilot. Listening to Xavier's transmissions, he did not sound like it was his first rodeo. Give him a bit more tasks. He can handle it. Nice shots of him sumping the fuel tanks for water. To share, when I was a Student Pilot (circa 1975) my flight school office had three glass baby food jars on a shelf. One jar was filled with 100% avgas. The second, a combination of avgas and dirty water. The third, 100% dirty water. There was a label, "do you know what you're looking for?" on the jar. The point is, how many people actually know what water in your fuel looks like? By the way, when are we gonna see Isabel in right seat? Avionics: I think I shared with you that I'm going the Experimental build route. Van's RV-14. Although I'm few years out of committing, I'm already mulling over avionics. The big question is, do I need symmetry? Does the right side of my panel need to look exactly like the left side? In some operations (airline, corporate) having the same displays on both the left and right sides of the instrument panel is regulatory for minimum crew, and a convenience for flight instructing, but is it necessary for single-pilot flying? Glasses: I have to wear prescription glasses when I fly. Because of the noise level in aircraft I fly, I am also required to wear a headset throughout the flight. When I wear my day-to-day glasses, my headset (head-clamp) crushes the temples of my glasses into the side of my head. After a while - ouch! So, I wear a pair of Ray Ban Aviators with skinny wire temples. Less ouch. Bloopers: Yeah, I don't make any bloopers either! 😜

Lol bring back some more bloopers. 😂 Great info, by the way regarding IFR. I've been watching videos today about IFR, trying to see if it was something I needed or not. I couldn't grasp it. Then you gave a simple example of "if you didn't have IFR, you would have been stuck there" and it clicked. Seems super simple now, but sometimes scenarios help.

Thanks Shaun! Absolutely my friend! IFR brought a different dimension to flying. The feeling of flying in and out of clouds is exquisite. But to sum it up, if you are a local pilot you may not need IFR. But if you fly cross country often I think IFR is a must. It makes a pilot a sharper pilot. But enjoy one step at time. Too much learning at once can get overwhelming! 😀

Synonym avionics look like a fairly decent option I really don’t understand how they can make such a good looking system and still have their back up instrument look like it came in a box of Cracker Jacks.

Quick question…your son was able to change the com Chanel front the iPad? Is that capable just from the USB port…or some other interface installed in the panel? Thank you

Thank you very much Alexis and I welcome you! I'd say that the family involvement is what makes it very appealing to me. To answer your question, yes! One thing I love about the Avidyne is the app (IFD100) which turns your ipad into a second Radio. Giving you the ability to control everything, including frequencies via WIFI.

That's awesome to teach your son! And to be honest it starts with radio communication! For the headset, they are two leaders in Aviation headset. Bose A20 or LightSpeed Zulu. I never have any issues wearing a sunglass with either one! Perhaps you should invest in one of them :) Question, I'm just wondering when you did your avionic upgrade, why you didn't choose between Garmin G3X touch and GFC 500 autopilot? it would of been slightly more but solid state IFR platform!
@FlyingDirty
@FlyingDirty 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Shawn and thank you for everything! Who are you telling? I could not get a word out of my mouth in my vfr training and then the same for my IFR training. I did my upgrade last year. I was going to go with the G3X but when I played around with the HDX I ended up liking it a whole lot more. Plus, I also hate how Garmin rips off the GA community. The HDX is more intuitive, crisp display, and built with so many options. It also includes a full Autopilot. All you would need are the servos. (It's just not approved for the PA32 yet). But with Garmin, they force you to still get the G500 (another 15k or so). I personally do not go into heavy IFR and I always avoid ceilings under 1000 feet for the most part. Unless I am practicing which I always prefer to hand fly it! But if by chance I need the autopilot in IFR as an emergency I know that this one is able to do it without any problems. So I preferred to wait until Dynon approved the Six (if they ever do now).

@@FlyingDirtyomg, my radio communication was awful when i started lol. 24/7 was was listening to live ATC. Its so great your son is leaning the radio communications with you at this early age :) Dont get me wrong and its personally my opinion, Dynon HDX and AEROCRUZE 100 is great but for some extra Garmin G3X, and GFC 500 would of been a better choice as it will add more value to the airplane and redundancy and your IFD navigator would of been 100% compatible :)
@FlyingDirty
@FlyingDirty 2 жыл бұрын
@@MooneyM20J not really, value can only go up to a certain point. When I did the value estimate I’d come out much better with the HDX. And I don’t like Garmin. The value is way overrated my friend. I would not change a thing!

@@FlyingDirty Not yet, I did ask them why in the hell they did that though with no answer. You and I both know that the controls are twice as heavy on a PA32. They need to get approval for upgrade to same as elevator. I will say it was a clutch issue failing and not the motor or system.

Definitely…. I’ve been teaching her and my son now for a while. She’s also very attentive and asks questions. When I got the autopilot I also showed how to maneuver, program flight plans, and emergency frequency. I told her not to worry much about damaging the airplane but to just get it down and walk away. Every family pilot should absolutely teach the other at least the very minimum. Thanks for that note!
