Here is Shoemaker's Legato Etude #16 for French Horn! This one had some publishing inconsistencies with regard to dynamics, slurs, etc. but otherwise was a true-to-Shoemaker challenging etude! I add my take on why I like to play Second Horn and what the French horn position is like in an orchestra.

I agree. I am a very active non-professional player and play 90% second horn. I love supporting the first horn when great harmonies occur, the solos we often occur and the best part is what I call the "color" note. The passing tone that creates the dissonance and power of the chord. Thank you Haley. Keep up your videos.

Very nicely played, thank you. I like that in your other videos you are an advocate of using Bb horn fingerings even below second line G. (So many players would take a sharp intake of breath at this.!) but it is good sense to use easier fingerings on more secure harmonics if the music lends itself to it. Do you also promote alternate fingerings too.? Such as third valve Bb side for low and high D..? Keep up the good work and by the way second horn position has the best of all worlds, less stress and always good lines to play.

Thanks Ian! Yes, I like alternate fingerings and B-flat side for low D with B:3 - better intonation and response

What do you think about the obligation of the second horn to adjust and balance with the first horn? This seems like something which would be stressful and maybe more difficult than what the first horn has to do in some cases.

Owen, it can be if the first horn isn’t very good but I have been lucky to sit by great players. It is part of the challenge though and I do enjoy it!

Owen, the requirement of learning to "adjust and blend" is what allows us to quickly blend with WW quintets/groups and brass groups. We can blend and enhance with all types of groups and music. Principal horn has the spotlight and the stress but without the second horn support they are out there all by themselves.
