A firehose of info and reactions for the 2023 vinyl reissue of They Might Be Giants' 1999 eMusic-only album Long Tall Weekend - one I've always had a particular fondness for. Unlike certain people I could name...

That other promo CD given out at the 1999 WIRED Reader's Raves Awards was actually printed with silver ink, and it shines when looking at it from different angles irl

always excited to see some respect for long tall weekend! it's my favourite as well, to a degree that i'm surprised youtube didn't show me this until now. its weird ominous vibe is possibly my favourite thing about it; i think it has a stunningly cohesive atmosphere for what are technically "leftover" songs. i liked your takes on the tracks. the idea of dark and metric being about some kind of remote canadian town amused me, because i'm from a remote canadian town and that's exactly what it always makes me think of, lol. also intrigued by the idea of counterfeit faker being about flans' brother; i've never heard that interpretation before, and i don't often consider tmbg to be a band that writes autobiographically, but something about that analysis strikes me as credible. maybe it's a more subtle revisiting of the same ideas from flood's hot cha? i think my one disagreement would be about severe tire damage's version of they got lost being better. i think the slower take on it serves the song better. it just _sounds_ like the song itself is lost, driving in circles, and i consider it a strength when a song's musical landscape reflects its lyrics. the faster version might be more rocking, but i think it's also more generic. (then again, it serves its purpose as a live recording. fun stuff like that is what concerts are best for.) somebody else said this already, but now all they need to do is release this album on cd, for _me_ ...

I think I might like Long Tall Weekend better than even you, because it was the first TMBG album I remember coming out when I was a kid (I was 4) and I was so excited for new TMBG songs. "She Thinks She's Edith Head" and "Maybe I Know" were my favorite songs for many years (replacing "Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head" which was apparently my fav song as a toddler...) I didn't even know it was an eMusic album until this video, since I guess my parents must have immediately burned it onto a CD so we could all listen in the car, and I think they printed out the cover art for the CD case too! Great breakdown, definitely an album that holds up, I agree that the song sequencing is really well done! Funnily enough, I did always know "Edison Museum" wasn't Flans, because the song always scared me as a kid and the sudden unfamiliar voice made it creepier to me (and yes my dad did tell me and my brother he'd take us there when we "quarreled")

We live in a time in which albums are likely to be issued as download, vinyl, and even cassette tape, but much more rarely on CD, sad news for those who want to own a physical copy of the digital medium. Greetings to a fellow fan of William Burroughs.

I'll admit I've always dismissed this album, but your pure, intellectual love for it is so infectious. I feel I have a newborn appreciation for each track. Incredible job! :D

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I love this album, although I guess I'd take They Got Lost over this if pressed, but Dark and Metric, Operators and Lullaby are probably better than MOST songs on They Got Lost so it's a tossup...

You have failed in proving to me that you like it more than I do.

TMBG albums aren't even albums. They're little worlds that feel like no other, somewhere between Brooklyn some other dimension that only They belong to.
