We are not weird and crazy. Just honest, expressive and no bs. xD Honestly, I am a Serbian who has lived in the US for years now and what I miss the most and why I will eventually go back for the most is the 'freedom of the soul'. I don't have a batter way of saying it. People in Serbia are just so honest, free to express themselves and don't insist on political correctness. I get reminded of that every time I go back home. But I'm grateful for my life here because I would have probably not come to this realization had I lived my whole life in Serbia. From this prospective I understood Serbian history of constant fighting for freedom and our ancestors' holding freedom to such high regard and us just approaching life with so much freedom in expressing ourselves. It's just amazing how one has to go away to realize what she loves about her own people, her own country and is going to be back for. I now understand that being Serbian was never easy and probably won't ever be but being free means being alive and that is what is worth fighting for. Thanks for a great video, Erik!

Great video. I am Serbian. I was born in Canada. I went to Serbia once and loved it. I miss that feeling of freedom that you don't feel in Canada. Also the traditions and religion- Orthodox Christianity. There is a true tolerance and openness in Serbia and Greece, where my mother is from, to religion. By religion I mean not just religious gatherings as in Canada but religious thought- thought that does not change through persuasive arguments or trends. There exists the acceptance and encouragement of individuality of mind (think Plato, Aristotle). Again I miss that. And I don't like all the rules about how you should be. I grew up that way. It's an unspoken system and culture. And I think it exists from lack of traditions. I used to think it affects women more (buy this designer, wrong color, too "unique," etc). I'm glad you are speaking the truth. It's how I think and feel too.

Since moving to Serbia from Canada, I am now certain that I will never move back to Canada. Canada is a painfully boring, alienated society, where people are passive aggressive and closed off. Canada has become a giant human sheep farm. The best Canadians are those wild enough to leave, like Erik.

The lifestyle is simply way superior to the shit we're put through here. I'm thankful for the privileged life that Canada has given to me but I still feel like this country is not for me and that there's a whole different world over on the other side of the Atlantic that's what I'm looking for. Yeah this is minor, however not unimportant. But that's the mentality almost everywhere on the face of this planet, perhaps not with the same intensity. It's the imprint of capitalism on the mindset of people, i.e. that they measure and determin everything with the ruler of profit. You know that typical pricing when the price is just a tiny bit less than the rounded value, like 490 or 499 instead of 500. I'm pretty sure that goes the same way in Serbia too, and it's a psychological scam which works through an even more sneaky subconscious way and for the same reason that the one you mentioned. But the variety of these scams add up on a lot larger scale, like small brooks flow together into a hurge river, and become those fake politcal systems, the fake monarchy, fake socialism, fake communism, and this fake democracy in which we and our ancestors have and had been living and which cause more serious trouble, like wars, economical and cultural colonisation, evnironmental disasters, enslavement of people, land and nature.

geez, I was looking at travel videos and found you! Exactly the truth! I am from Toronto and several generations Canadian. You have expressed what I have felt in my soul better that I ever could. Groupthink and mind numbing political correctness are the norm here. I moved to interior BC to escape it and found that although it's less PC, I am surrounded by smiling morons. I have always known that something is just not right, but thought something must be wrong with me because everyone else accepts their prison. Honestly , I am not sure I have ever had an honest conversation with a single person in my entire life. People, life is hard and the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. I disagree with the people that don't think you sound Canadian. This is what we used to sound like before we were bombarded with American culture 24/7.

Hey Erik, I don't watch your videos too often, but I did comment on some of them before. I am from Slovakia but I live in Denmark now, and the way you are describing Canada in this video fits remarkably for Denmark. Everything is super easy out here, you pass the university even without trying, you earn a lot of money for not working at all, people are fake in my opinion, pretending to be polite and respectful, but inside they are quite nationalistic about the rules abd values that are apparently present in Denmark, and generally not ambitious, living a super comfortable life. When I went to Serbia for the first time in August this year, it was an eye-opening experience, people were so honest, happy, hospitable, and somehow I had this feeling of freedom, nothing I experienced in Denmark before, even though you would assume that Denmark is a more free of a country. I am happy to have lived here for two and a half years and being able to compare the two "worlds" but honestly I can't wait to get out of here once I am done studying in June. I've just had enough of it, therefore I am going volunteering to Slovenia next year. Hopefully their mentality will be the same as that of Serbians. Keep up the good work with videos like this :) -Peter

Slovenians are more like westerns people from all nations of former Yugoslavia. But i am sure you gona run into some Serbian people who work there or so. :)
@BelgradeBeat6 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, thanks for the message... Slovenia is different, but they still are good people. Why don't you like living in Slovakia? My family is from there but I chose Serbia over Slovakia because of the stuff you mentioned.
@peterroman15546 жыл бұрын
Belgrade Beat Well I never said I didn't like Slovakia, but my personality makes me very curious about seeing/moving to other countries and places, and being able to compare and learn something from each culture. I think I am still too young to settle down for a long time, and I will move out of Slovenia after this one year of voluntary work that I am planning to do, but none of this means that I don't like my home country :) It might be true that I partially went to Denmark to see an example of a "developed western" country, and that many people struggle in Slovakia because of the low salaries and lack of opportunities, and therefore seek to move out. However, I would like to, and I probably will, come back one day. The experience in Denmark taught me that money isn't everything and that people around you matter a lot! I might have an enormous amount of friends out here, but the vast majority of them are foreigners like me, not the natine Danes, which is not something like I experienced in Slovakia or Serbia where the natives welcome you, especially in Serbia. It is kinda ture though that life can be difficult for some people who don't earn a lot in Slovakia..

In Serbia you do that for nothing or in the best case for few Euros, for beer or pljeskavica. :-) Thank you for being honest. I love my country and my people but it's very hard to make money enough for normal life here. At least for me. Yes, life here makes you tougher but after almost five decades (I'm 49) you get tired a bit. Or a lot. Wish you all the best, živ i zdrav da si.

Hi Eric! Thank you for these interesting thoughts and views. I bet many people from Belgrade would never say there could be something better about living in Belgrade than in Toronto. I have fallen in love with Serbian people for similar reasons. They are authentic, expressive and great fun. I have never learnt any language with more pleasure and ease than Serbian and I am very happy that today I can speak it, even though I have never lived in Serbia. I cannot fully agree with the view on political correctness though. I actually think it is a good thing. The way I see it is that political correctness is teaching us to be sensitive and respectful to the people who were or are still being oppressed. Of course, it is also important what we do and not only what we say but words matter, too. I believe it is necessary that people respect each other for a society to function well. For example, people in my home country, Slovakia, are probably also more emotional and direct than Canadians and I am fine with that. I like my fellow countrymen, of course. :) However, the downside of this is that sometimes people can be too rough or insensitive - including high-profile people such as well-known politicians. I am hoping there could be some golden middle ground - that people can remain fun and authentic but at the same time being able to respect certain limits for the common good.

Sadly, I know very little about this branch of my family but I find it fascinating. The WWII was an unspeakable tragedy and horror. Taking that into account, I can understand very well that your ancestors were seeking peace and better life across the ocean.

It's really easy to have your point of view because of how and where you grew up. But it doesn't mean there isn't a different way of life in Canada or the US. In many big cities depending on the neighborhood you can have a completely different life with a complete other set of rules and customs. In a city like NY you can have areas where its exactly how you mentioned, but in others its like you are in another country. You don't always have to be so drastic as to move to the other side of the world or paint a whole country with the same brush, but at the same time I admire your passion in finding your own place on this planet.
@BelgradeBeat6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I made this video to explain my point of view. People envy people who grew up places like this... But if you stay any place too long it can be a trap. I also feel that growing up in a rich part of Canada made me a bit of a snob and by going to another country I escape that and be more who i want to be without the trappings of the class system.

I believe that you grow more when you struggle and find yourself as a person then when everything is easy and you dont have to use your head. People in 3rd world countries are a lot smarter because they have to use their head. I feel like everyone in North America for most part are retarded because they never use their head and they always have someone telling them how they should live their life. Anyways have to go back to this boring ass job, have a good one.

You have never done a video called ' why I live in Belgrade and not Zagreb or Sarajevo. ' Too sensitive a topic? Do those cities have a similar vibe? I'm coming in May! Can't wait.
@BelgradeBeat6 жыл бұрын
I don't really have a personal connection to those cities. I think for anyone who has travelled the region it's obvious that Belgrade is the bustling metropolis of the region and all the other capitals are smaller affairs with less going on. You'll see.

So you're criticising them for obeying the rules which, by your own admission, makes for a very safe place ... an orderly place, and a prosperous place? Which rules specifically are you talking about? Also, you say one can't speak their mind to others. Well, maybe because there are many cultures living in Toronto unlike the homogenous Belgrade, and also because Toronto is a more individualistic society historically.

I spent a week in Belgrade in May. I really don’t understand how everyone can afford to sit in cafes all day if they have no money. One woman told me that her son was a radiologist and she had to send him 300 a month to survive. The city has lots of potential but people need to stop the graffiti. My main complaint was the taxi drivers who rip you off. Street vendors appear quite desperate and it makes you want to avoid them. I had some weird experiences in restaurants. In Skadarlia most of the restaurants were half full and they wouldn’t let me sit there. It was weird. I had strange restaurant experiences several times in Serbia but not in Bosnia or Croatia.?.?..?. Overall, I liked the food and vibe of the city. Toronto feels empty in comparison.

You can have one coffee and sit 5 hours in a cafe. That's how. No one will kick you out.
