As a person who uses Discord literally everyday ((To either talk with friends or for voice work)) I felt this. It's why I'm usually never active in public server's/prefer not to join or be active in them. Just so much drama that can happen over the most stupidest things, and it happens every week. I migrated to Discord from the app Amino since that's where a majority of my friends were before everything fell to shit over there. If ever you do feel like going back to discord, I'd suggest doing it privately and only letting close friends know. TL;DR I felt this video and wish you the best

from my about 4 years on discord now i've learned quite a few things; discord can be a very strange place with very strange people choose your friends wisely muting general is always an option you can never focus on conversations in all the servers you're in at once respect bot creators, making complex bots is really hard always be wary of DMs out of the blue don't accept friend requests from people you haven't interacted with at all muting #memes is usually highly recommended never trust 'free nitro' discord has image compression *there is no place for children on discord* for instance, i once joined a server for a web comic i was interested in (not homestuck, don't worry) and immediately after i introduce myself i was supposedly welcomed to a 'hivemind named steve'. i promptly muted all channels except the few announcement channels and didn't talk there again.

@@VegasMax3 I'd be careful in saying those people don't usually change. People are always going to be in different developmental stages, and some stay in certain ones longer than others. Personally I'd argue that mindset along with the complete opposite which is 'we just have to deal with them because they need help' isn't helpful. As a person who struggles with habits that most people would find toxic or immature, I've seen many times where people treat others as ones who won't ever change or will give the person not enough motive to change by just letting things happen. Many people wanting to change find it hard to because of the lack of people to support them one way or another whether by ending friendships with them in a friendly, healthy manner or giving them advice while setting up necessary boundaries.

some people are fine with twitter because they dont use it very often. i stopped using twitter everyday and i pretty much just use it for posting the relevant content and checking notifs, and thats really it, and i feel a lot better since. of course a lot of laypeople i think are inclined to use twitter pretty often, and with how the site is designed for outrage, it inclines a lot of stupid behaviour too, and thus has bred twitter into a notorious battleground of toxicity. its not a good place for discussions or news (yet it tries to be for both of these things). basically, just use it as a brand platform for the most part and you dont really have to give a shit what happens as long as youre not saying stupid things or whatever.

That's totally fair. Discord can indeed be pretty overwhelming. I've got a server for my channel too. Back in 2017/2018ish it was super active, like whenever I even just dared typing anything, chat would explode. Having moderators definitely helps keep things in check, but its a lot of administrative work that can get pretty tiresome. Making sure the people you get to moderate aren't power hungry assholes and all that. Plus if you want to structure the server in a specific way that can also be a fair learning curve. It helps that nowadays you can choose what things you like to be notified for. You can even turn off @everyone notifications if they bother you. But I totally get that getting DM'd by random people all the time and feeling that pressure of needing to respond can get super overwhelming. At the very least I'm glad to hear you didn't get weirdos worshipping you or writing you insanely detailed confessions. Para social relationships be one hell of a drug. But yeh, I really don't blame you for no longer wanting to engage with Discord after all the stuff you went through.
@R0ZEN7
@R0ZEN7 Жыл бұрын
My main problems with discord is the mentality it gives people as well as the actual platform itself being nothing but bloat that very much records everything you type. In terms of mentality I mean how it makes a person almost a slave of their own emotions and to act out completely on impulse due to those said emotions, basically losing the ability to think ahead and act in extremely selfish manners and destructive actions. It is something that once you get away from it you start to realize how much it has effected you and it is a hard mentality to get rid of. The platform itself is a complete mess in all meanings of a complete mess. Between the program itself just being a super bloated chromium browser to the UI being an absolute mess. On top of that privacy is completely nonexistent considering how your own private message chats are logged and can possibly get you banned if you do something or say something not allowed despite it being in a private chat, plus there is the fact you need a PHONE NUMBER to even make an account which should tell someone everything they need to know in terms of privacy with a platform. I think in general it would be best for people to distance themselves from that platform and use alternatives. There was a time before people used discord and the internet was just fine then so I don't see the problem with not using discord now. The main argument I always get seen thrown around is that "all my friends are there" to which I say that is what Discord wants you to think to get you to not only stay but get you to invite others to the platform. Sorry for the long rant but I like your videos and just kind of felt like expressing my disdain for this platform.

@joshuayonemura2572
@joshuayonemura2572 2 жыл бұрын
Sadly, private discord servers aren't immune to toxicity. If drama and miscommunication happen within the small group, friends can turn on each other and kicks and bans can happen without actual/proper reconciliation. Also sometimes, there are red flags when the owner says that they are very careful of who they invite and allow others to trash talk people not on the server because it is a "safe place/haven." Small can mean less problems, but that also means that the problems that do arise are likely to be more serious. If it is working for you, that's great. It's fantastic to see at least one part of discord not in literal discord.

@@joshuayonemura2572 i have dealt with my own fair share of toxicity and if it starts in any server i run, which is 2 of them, I've dealt with it immediately by settling miscommunication as soon as i can, or outright removing people who refuse to listen as i have little to no patience with particular toxic behavior patterns. It's so stressful for people to WANT to be a part of your life actively when, as an artist, as someone with a time consuming hobby, you don't have a lot of it to go around. I appreciate all the people but I really can't keep making stuff if i spend all my time responding to EVERY single person. Please understand. Then throw in manipulative tactics like appealing to morality and association to judge you as a person so you're COMPELLED to respond to them when they're REALLY just doing that for the sense of power they feel over you. Ugh. Again thank you for saying all of this so I don't feel alone in these feelings.

Your story kind of reminds me of my friend's situation. She's the leader of our team in a Japanese MMO. The game used to be IP restricted, and so our community was small for a while, but it grew in popularity when the IP restriction went down. I didn't witness most of this, so it's all second hand info, but the gist of what I've heard was new people came in and made a Discord since we didn't have an official one and they decided they wanted to make an "overflow team" associated with said Discord account, then made up complaints about people being pedos to get her to ban people and caused a lot of rifts with it eventually being revealed that they were purposefully creating issues to get people to abandon our group for theirs. She didn't quit Discord, but the stress from the complaints and the toxic environment/situation still bother her to this day.

I was in some amino communities once, and even just being in it, not managing it, it was stressful to try and keep up with everyone, and deal with all the drama of people and their problems. I love to help people but groups like that are so damn stressful. If being a part of one is as stressful as it was, I can't imagine managing one. Not to mention, these are people i felt really alike with, but it was still just too much stress

@@doonomac7514 yeah it was a mess, try doing school stuff, while managing a chaos of ~300 daily users, mostly teenagers and kids. Be the childish arguments, extreme situations where user puts themselves in danger, or a petty troll who is raiding the chats with nsfw content for 6 hours straight after they got banned. Many of staff members also either silently quit, used the admin powers abusively, or were too afraid to do any actions. Honestly I have huge respect for staff teams who can pull off dealing with large communities, but Amino was the worst platform for that.

@@arcionek omg, absolute respect for community adin and moderators, dealing with the bs of communities is just so impressive (except the power abusers obviously). I'm not sure if you said you were still in it, but well done for all your admin work and good luck if you're still going. Also, it is kind of a shame for amino because it is a really good platform (in concept) with how you can find communities of people like yourself so easily and how the layout of each community is so user friendly, but it's just not secure enough to keep it's users and communities safe from trolls and the like. And it's a good place to meet actually really cool people, but with so many children on there, it can be exausting. It would be such a great platform if the user issues coulf be managed better. It just leaves the admin teams in communities in way too much power but also vulnerability in how difficult it is.

Friends that I may interact with a bit on occasion (most), and friends that are my go-to, full trust, close friends (very few). I don't have the energy to give everyone that close friendship, so the close ones need to be special, like chosen family.

When I created my Discord account, I joined many servers of several youtubers and streamers, but I started to realize that staying at very crowded servers wouldn't ad anything and I can't even talk to people without getting lost in those hundreds of unrelated messages. I started getting out of many servers, deactivated the notifications and everything is better now that I only use Discord to play with friends. Sometimes I'll check the 3 servers of people I follow that aren't too crowded and chat a little with different people

This was interesting to hear about. In a way I'm in an opposite situation where I'm avoiding Twitter XP Discord has felt like it's best to me when communities are small; in a super large pool of individuals it always felt hard to just try to chime into a conversation that was going by quickly. A discord server getting bigger definitely sounds like something that can't be done alone, there's a lot of stress that can break a person. There's also the concept too of parasocial relationships which you touched as well that makes things tricky. I have no idea where this comment is going XP - it was a new perspective for me to hear; enjoyed the video a lot!

I think Discord is the home for a vast majority of online drama for people. I remember using this emo Toon Link pfp back in 2020 to express how depressed I am, and boy little did I know how bad it would really get for me 💀 I would hang out with a legitimately toxic friend, and I felt like I had to cling on because I felt like I would be lonely if I didn't. And those types of "friendships" are not worth your time btw, don't even bother with those types of people lol. Eventually, I just abandoned Discord and Twitter to find myself because I had major anxiety issues back in the day (still do honestly.. I relapse every so often :/). But I still DM some really good friends on there. I love them so much ☺❤

I've been using Discord since mid-2016, and I have witnessed MANY of these happen, a lot where I was directly involved, a mod, an active member, or just a new member trying to find a server that suited me. Never again though lol, and like you said too many channels to navigate, feeling bad for not being able to respond to DMs, feeling overwhelmed - all good reasons to either use Discord only to talk to friends like I do, or not use it at all. Glad you decided to stop using it altogether, good on you and your mental health!

I totally relate to the limiting amount of people you are friends with. Like I don’t understand how someone has a thousand “friends”. To actually have a real friendship takes time and energy and there aren’t enough hours in the day to have that with many people. In reality, most people probably have a few friends and the rest are various acquaintances. I would say you can also have dormant friendships, where you were pretty close with someone for at least a small chunk of time and could consider them a friend, but then life circumstances separated you. However if you saw them again and life sort of brought you back together, it wouldn’t be too hard to start off the friendship again (unless something major has changed). This has been my TED talk.

As a discord person who uses that app mostly, I totally agree and understand of how ppl act and really glad you made a good choice leaving it. Because I be seeing silly arguments everyday, some crazy, unnecessarily obscured chats that just should be deleted in the first place, or just rude and toxic people and more. I mean I only use it because because I just like using calls there or when I use one of the game’s servers for updates and stuff. So I know I’m a total stranger but have a nice and wonderful day or summer and happy pride month. :p

These reasons you speak of are why I hinder on becoming a moderator in any public discord. So I'll just stick with private discord servers filled with my friend groups. Nothing to really worry about if you know the friend long enough where they won't cause trouble. It's also nice you can restrict others from inviting friends of friends so you can just have the people you specifically want onto your discord and no one else.

I left discord after being accused of cultural appropriation in a server for mentioning in a conversation about Russia that my great grandparents fled Russia due to being Jewish. It was such an off hand comment, and although Judaism isn’t part of my life personally it’s part of some of my cousin’s lives and my ancestors. I got immediately banned and sent a 5 paragraph essay explaining why I cannot talk about my Jewish ancestors because it’s a closed culture and I must convert to be allowed to talk about it.

I got this video randomly recommended, actually to have social media you have to accept people trying to reach at you if you're mildly popular. The best youtubers actually do is to not bond with anyone on their social media. On discord the best you can do is decide a group of staff that is strong enough to deal with people and will protect you from everyone as well as maintain it under control. I've been a mod in many servers around 100 to 500 members, I've been owner of one, and I noticed the only way to keep them under control is making them respect you entirely from the beginning, if they do, they won't dare trying at all. This is just some advice but if you won't make a discord it is entirely respectable, I just hope you did to join it because your art truly looks awesome and I just knew about ur existence lol

My experience was awful. Slurs, guilt tripping, gossiping that I condoned out of fear, unalive baiting, political arguments, creepy behavior, the constant amount of drama and bullying, that I quit. I left everything, deleted everything, and quit. It really was like a dr-g because you get addicted so easily for hours. But quitting made it all better. When that happened, I got called a “traitor” and “toxic” by online people all because I prioritized the real world and my own sanity over petty internet drama and weirdo internet people I’ll never see again. These people think that everything in d*sc*rd (censored for funny) is 100% private, even in a public group, and so they completely remove their filter and start becoming absolutely toxic and terrible people. I almost removed my filter, too. And had I continued, I would’ve been surrounded by nothing but awful behavior, which would make me so stressed. Quitting that messed up app is enough to turn your life around for the better! 😄
