Hi Paul! I'm a Thai-American who has plans to retire in Thailand in 2-3 years. I came to SoCal at the age of 2 and I never thought I'd ever return to the country of my birth but as I got into my 50s, Thailand became more appealing. I'm truly grateful to my adopted country for the opportunities it has afforded me but Thailand has something magical that draws me to it. It's hard to explain but those who have been bitten by the Thailand bug know exactly what I'm talking about. The only way I can describe it is the Hawaiian word OHANA. It means FAMILY. Thai culture is OHANA, a sense of family and community, whereas, here in the USA, it's individualism. This is why you call people unrelated to you Pee (older brother) Paah (auntie) Loong (uncle). Thailand will offer me the peace and solitude that I'm seeking in my golden years. The fact that there are 4 women for every man in Thailand isn't bad either!

grengjai / เกรงใจ can't be defined as just considerate or courteous ! It would take a couple of pages to explain and understand the different ways Thai people use and understand this word grengjai. The concept of grengjai and face are woven into each other. Also grengjai is partially based on fear, as greng means to be afraid. Forrest only brushed over the meaning. I doubt he even understands it completely.

You, Forrest, and several others on KZbin have definitely given me insight and influenced my decision to leave the states. I'm over 50 now so I qualify for the retirement visa, but I'm not in a financial situation yet to pick up and leave right away. I've got to get something set up to survive until I can start getting into my 401k and IRA. I really need to look into your online program. I wish I had taken the initiative and left at your age, but I don't think the world and the internet was at that point in the 90's. Keep putting out the great content and giving me hope for a better life in Thailand!

Thailand supposedly wants to attract more wealthy people but the change in tax law expected next year is a game stopper. I usually live in Bangkok 8 months a year but will need to stay under 180 days starting next year to avoid tax consequences.

I cherish any time I get to spend with them because I know it won't be too long before they pass and tbh it won't be too long before I pass as well. I'll be happy if I make it to 80.

Great video, guys! I’m 20 and 30 years older than you both, respectively - age 58. I lived in Taiwan 1994-2006, was mostly happy, and often thought I’d never leave. The digital age, however, wasn’t yet fully in swing. When my children reached the ages of 6 and 3, I couldn’t see a way to be a good husband and father going forward as a pre-school and cram school teacher, and I somewhat reluctantly returned to the U.S. and became a high school teacher (Hawaii…as close as you can come to leaving America without actually leaving America!). I have no regrets, as I’ve had a great career as a teacher and parent in the 50th state, and my wife and two children have thrived and are now college graduates with career-entry jobs. But if I were 20 or 30 years younger as yourselves and had to make the same decision over again, and if it were 2024 not 2006, I’d stay in Taiwan and find a way to continue my unique existence in an Asian country via the incredible possibilities that the Internet and globalization have made available to adventurous people who don’t want to live out their lives in the countries in which they were born and raised. Now, almost two decades later, I’m looking forward to retiring somewhere in SE Asia - probably either Thailand or Malaysia. You young KZbinrs are providing me with a wealth of information as well as inspiration. Here’s to both of you! To allude to Morrissey and the Smiths, KZbinrs of the world, unite and take over!

I live in Florida and visited Patong Beach twice this year. I loved how nice the locals are as well as the businesses in the Paradise Complex area. Once I found a local to help me, I learned to love the food also. The heat is oppressive (I thought our heat was bad!). The roads, sidewalks, electric wires and the public schools are examples of how low a priority infrastructure is. The large number of buildings falling apart is concerning. My new friends think I am rich because I'm from the USA. They complain about working all day and not making money when there are no customers. I tried to explain if they want to get ahead they need to join together, pull their funds, and support each other. They lack the education to get ahead, I feel bad for them.

The cost of living in America is very high. It’s not necessarily anti America but we begin to realize what real freedom is outside America and that we want more time to enjoy life with family and loved ones instead of just being stuck at work. You made the right decision to move to Thailand.

Unfortunately, most people are close minded and thinking outside the box, moving, relocating, travelling, investing, etc. Seems unrealistic or scary for some. Like you said, where there's a will there is a way! Financial literacy I would argue is one of the most important things to learn before uprooting from a country like the USA though, there is a lot of opportunity in USA but as Forrest said, once you are established there is more value in other places around the world. If places like the USA and Canada did more to incentivize high value people to stay, then we would not be seeing people fleeing in droves like they are now.

When you are asking about "what you don't know", I think it is more of an inner thing than an outer thing. Since you are 28, your body is still young and you have lots of energy. When someone is late 30's, they realize they don't have the energy they once had and that the energy levels are only decreasing. It is not about "realizing something later on" as you are thinking.

With that said, I recommend you focus your energy one what your life goals are and do it now. Is it starting a family? Starting a specific business? Whatever it is, do it now as you now have the time to. Once you are in late 30's the time is limited.

I personally don't care what peoples opinion of my "privelage" is when I'm creating content. My audience isn't Thai people. Most of them don't understand English well enough to be a part of my audience nor should they and I'm not targeting them. My audience is other English speakers from Western countries and I'm showing life through the lens of that privelage and what it is for US. So, if they want to call me privelaged then whatever I truly don't care it's a ignorant take. I do try to be mindful when I say it's more affordable I add "for us" to clarify what I mean. People are so easily triggered and its extremely annoying to have to constantly hear from those people. I truly just don't care neither should you guys.

Paul says he isn't rich, though in America the average person doesn't make 100,000 and up. So compared to the average person for even in America he is rich or well off. At the end of the video he stated he made 6 figures . So for Thailand he is very rich. As the average Thai family to live in Chiang mai probably makes about 20,000 baht and up.

The word “privileged” seems to be a trigger word for those that are jealous or envious of others. I live in NYC and LA both for work, I don’t consider myself privileged that I may get shot walking down the street or carjacked. I don't see myself ‘privileged” for that. Not with the awful crime rates in the US. Now I do consider myself “lucky”, “fortunate” to have been born in this country to make myself the income with hard work and diligence. thanks for this video paul. i stopped following forrest when he's so much against paying tax in the states which i think we all should FAIRLY pay - we can argue about how to spend it but paying tax is a form of investment & shared responsibility to make a society work; we got some privileges from it and should pay back & also pay forward to the next gen. there as well. but he redeemed himself (in my estimate ;) ) suggesting to be appreciative of those privileges, be humble and generous to the thai people around here now as recognition to the continued privileges that we've experienced. so 2 thumbs up for both of you to have your heads & hearts in the right places. you'll be ok here in thailand for as long as you want, if there's a will then there's a way. and you're holding some of the solutions in your bank right now.. Ironically, he's by and large a huge beneficiary of US taxpayer funded programs from free education, time in the military, to his parent's government jobs and pension. As long as you have money coming in you will be able to stay somehow, it's that simple. I recommend investing in real estate in a "first world" country and/or dividend producing stocks / ETF so eventually you can live off that passive income without needing any job or business (as you probably won't be able to run any when you're old)
