While I wouldn’t want to live in the inner city of Birmingham I’d definitely live in those nice suburbs south of the city though. My wife and kids moved here from the San Antonio area. We wanted to be in the Deep South also and Alabama has lots to offer, we are in a smaller town in south Alabama and I hope more people don’t discover this state. I don’t want this place turning into a North Carolina or Atlanta are or even Tennessee. Alabama is a hidden gem. Affordable living, pretty scenery, good soul food, close to the beach and other cities and nice winters.

Great video. I live in California now and I sing Birmingham's praises every time I'm asked where I'm from. I refer to it as the Austin of Alabama because it really is nothing like the rest of the state. The music scene is highly underrated (nice shout out to the amazing Tragic City), and the barbecue is unmatched anywhere in the country. It's a beautiful place and I miss it quite a bit. I don't miss the humidity, though, haha. Glad you're happy there. Keep spreading the good word about the 'ham!

Your message is so like many others that I have met that moved to Birmingham that get that very question, why Birmingham? Birmingham deserves a little good recognition and your video does a wonderful job!. Welcome to the Ham!!!

Just stumbled upon this video. I’m a theater maker (writer and performer) from Belgium and am planning a new project, which would require two three-week-periods of filming in Birmingham. Was wondering what the best area would be to stay in? (Travelling with a small crew of 3 or 4). Any bed and breakfasts you’d recommend? I keep reading about high crime rates, so would love to pick a safe place for my crew and I. This video sheds a different light on it though, looks like a wonderful place to be! Hope we can catch a music gig while we’re there.

You know that could have happened in any American city right? Hell, if it was Memphis, New Orleans, or Chicago the guy probably would have killed you and then took your money. Don't walk around in the wee hours of the morning in any American city if you're not familiar with it. If you go on the other side of the mountain, Bham is really nice. Just be mindful of your surroundings. If the grass is long and there are bars on the windows, get out of there, no matter what city.

She had me flying high for a moment then I read the comments below and was brought back down to earth. Black American male, in my 50's now and live elsewhere. I had some cool outings, years ago in Birmingham. The Southside was my favorite, some of the best herb(Not MJ) shops in the country, went to cool neighborhood African American bars and clubs. Met some of the coolest, radical white people in the country. But like in the other comments, there are always racial and economical barriers (higher in Birmingham) . People living an art, film making, music lifestyle but no real talent, because they have money. Connect with a female of a different race and it goes nowhere because she has to worry about the racial implications.

Read somewhere that in 1960 Birmingham population was 340,000 and today it is about 210,000. That is a massive loss of people in 60 years. Why? What the hell happened? Why did so many leave? In that same time period the USA population grew from 180 million to 330 million today.

The plague of surburbanization and racism that infected so many cities in the 60s and 70s....Detroit, Baltimore, Buffalo, St. Louis, etc. Plus ineffective leadership that didn't now manage and had no vision for the transition from an industrial/manufacturing economy, among other things. Leadership and vision much much better now.

When you got to Rojo I said yeah she gets it. Not best, not worst. Just hits the right buttons.

Oh, you're so right Raquel. Southside has had a nice vibe for decades, and Rojo is like a sweet little bleacher for us to enjoy it from. Doesn't at all hurt that the food is good!

Hey Raquel. This is a fantastic video about my hometown, thank you! I'm so glad you like it here; sometimes it takes a person from somewhere else to notice and appreciate the good things about our city. I wish you much success.
