I have to agree that there are so many agreeable aspects to Poland, I've spent some time there and my wife is still a Polish citizen. I loved looking at the cornerstone of the Wawel Castle, it reads 986 A.D. so has stood there for over a thousand years. Once you understand a bit of their culture you'll understand why their national anthem says, "We are still here". The Poles must be doing something right!. The people, the sights, the history, the food, what's not to like about Poland?

Compared to USA Polish healthcare system is GOLD. It has many flaws but still... compared to America it is GOLD. Additionally you can buy private insurance or your employeer will pay it for you. For example in my company I have private insurance in Medicover but just for me (not the rest of family). Since my kid had some health issues I wanted to add my kid to this insurance. It's 90 PLN per month - this is nothing. Not mentioning how convinient this is. I can book a visit in 2 minutes directly from web site or Android app. Whole test results - in the app. Prescriptions - in the app. And so on. No one paid me for saying this but I love Medicover.

I was born in Poland, so it's hard to be impartial. However, in recent years, I've heard many times about women feeling safe here. I'm from Gdansk and currently working in Krakow. My colleagues from Western Europe were amazed by how different their expectations were from reality. One woman from Germany was pleasantly surprised that after our integration meeting, she could walk to her hotel and no one bothered her during the hour-long walk in the middle of the night.

If you managed to land a visit at a dermatologist in two days it means you used the private sector doctor and while it's getting more popular (many jobs in larger companies now offer private medical plans for an employee and their family as part of their benefit system) is still something that most people can't do. Most people use the free healthcare system where you wait weeks and months and sometimes even years to see a specialist. I would also like to point out that many people with rare or very difficult diseases crowd fund their therapy and go to the USA in order to get treatment. The American system is highly cartelized thanks to a large degree to its regulatory framework so it has a lot of disadvantages but it also provides services that are not widely available around the world. Just my two cents.
@kikixchannel
@kikixchannel Жыл бұрын
She compares it to the American health care, where you can literally go broke over things that you can afford to set aside from a Polish pay check even if you do go to a private doctor. Besides, I don't think they even HAVE the option of going to the public health care since I don't believe they have such a concept? It all depends on insurance which covers portion of the costs for some select matters...though apparently people with particularly low income may try to have their portion of these costs made void in some cases. So yes. Even if she did go to a private doctor, all of her points still stand.

I don't disagree - Germany is pretty cool - but somehow... the always tend to forget what's wrong about Germany. And trust me - there's a lot!!! In overall Germany is a great country but the only says about pros - never cons. I work for German company from 8 years now but living in Poland. From time to time I go back to Germany for "team meetings". My collegaue always says - "trust me bro - this country became shit". I know he exaggerates but again - at least he's honest. . Those that went through WWII, or were born after WWII, understand how it was to be a Slave to Communist/Nazi Terrorism of Russia. It scares are there for life. Everything I speak about the horrific things Russians did in Europe, my massages get deleted. Do to what I know, those awful things never leave. I truly don't believe I would do well around Communist People, or those that feel that Russians are worthy of any of my time. So I can understand why Polish people feel the way they do. Germans weren't any better. Poland has done well, I hope they're intelligent enough to keep the hideous people out of Poland. I do understand why they left, it's not that they don't love their country, it's the memories that cause too much Trauma. It never leaves you.

It's always interesting to know others' people opinion about one's own country. Polish people tend to depreciate Poland (partly because "the grass is always greener in the West"). We do love our food and safety though. However, I do belive, that a well-to-do expat (childless - I sssume) living in one of the most beautiful and cultural cities of Poland, you have quite different perspective than f.e. sales person living in a remote village:D.

A lot of Poles complain about NFZ (free health care) because waiting times to some specialists or for some tests can be pretty long. It depends on the doctor you need and the hospitals you live near. I always go to gynecologist and dermatologist on NFZ (for free), very short wait time in the hospital close by and good specialists, but when I wanted to do gastroscopy I preferred to go to a private place and pay money.

As a Pole I do agree, this country made a superior transformation and it's #1 in the world in "US is loved the most", so all Americans can really feel good in this country and most people speak fluently in English especially in big cities, so even if you don't know Polish it's not any issue. I remember when I was flying to US and couldn't stay there longer than 10 days, because of a permanent stomachache as food quality in US is sorry to say : shit. All you said is OK. I can agree on healthcare system only if you have a private insurance, and you treat public healthcare as "emergency" that's OK, while rest you're doing from your private health insurance which isn't really expensive, especially when you want to do some quick surgery for example you're finding a surgeon privately who also works in a public hospital, and the path towards hospital is very short in that time :) Rest points I couldn't say it better 100% true.

This video is so helpful. I’m Polish but my husband is American and we currently live in the UK but we’re thinking about moving to Poland. How did you find the language barrier or did you speak Polish before moving (if you don’t mind me asking)
@SarahAchleithner
@SarahAchleithner 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! We spent around 5 years in Polish classes to pass the B1 exam. As native English speakers, we found the language to be incredibly difficult because Slavic based languages and thought processes are vastly different in every way. We just found it takes A LOT of work and time in order to get to the B1 level, which is still only around 60% proficiency.

As for how far away everything is in America, yeah, that's true, the zoning laws are ridiculous. In the suburbs you are not allowed to have a grocery store, just rows and rows of identical houses. That's crazy.

Thank you, Sarah. My wife and I, both retired, have been to Poland twice: first when we arrived from the States on the way to Ukraine, and second when we went to process work visas. Now we are ready to leave Ukraine, but we are not ready to leave Europe. Krakow was amazing both times we were there. Gdansk looks really interesting. I am still teaching a few English composition courses online, so I'm hoping to continue that. We enjoy the open plaza feel of Old Town. What advice would you give to retired educators considering Poland as a retirement destination? Thank you. Dean & Cindy
@SarahAchleithner
@SarahAchleithner 5 ай бұрын
I would definitely recommend retiring here! The quality of life is great and the cost of living is relatively low compared to other countries in Europe. A few things to consider: -to be here long term (more than 3 months) you will need a valid visa and reason to stay in Poland, so I would recommend talking to immigration lawyers to see what the best option would be. -research the different cities you would like to live in and start searching for groups of similar interests so you can start plugging into a community. I hope it works out for you both to retire here! It's a great country and we've enjoyed being in Krakow!

A Pole here. When i get sick i visit a doctor privately (or just call my friend/my Aunt who are doctors). Obviously even private medical services in Poland are literally 10 times cheaper than in USA (even if youre insured hehe). Ye, Polish healthcare system is FAARRR from ideal. But i agree - at least its a lot better than the American one.

Isn't paid vacation in Poland 25 days (so 5 weeks) by law? I'm pretty sure it is and it doesn't depend on what kind of job you do (it does depend on the type of contract, tho)

Depends how long you've been working, but remember studies are included as 8 years of work if I remember, so 10 years are needed to get 26 days, if you got less you got if I remember 21 days.

The funny thing in your video is that Krakow is actually one of the least livable cities in the whole country. Lack of good services, constant traffic jams, lack of open spaces and parks and the list goes on and on. I wonder how you'd be feeling about PL had you lived in Warsaw/Gdansk/Poznan/Wroclaw
