I have a 700 + CD Collection. It also depends on how the mastering process is done, in any given format. Some CD's I have sound really good and some sound awful, due to mastering. I rip all my CD's into the cloud, in WAV Files uncompressed and FLAC. Audio. I then keep them on the shelf, to prevent wear and tear. As I wish to preserve them. I love Compact Discs. Great video here.

Cds, viny, cassettes...I think it's awesome to keep yourself open and in tune with all those formats. 1. It's fun lol. 2. It just really expands the amount of music that come across your plate. 3. Even if it's the same album, for me the experience of listening to the same album on cd, vinyl, or cassette actually makes the music come across differently. Each format truly has something special all its own.

100% agree. I usually will only buy an album in multiple formats if it’s one of my favorites (or if I can get a really great deal). Vinyl is my go-to though, but I love the unique sounds and experiences each format can bring.

100% common sense! You nailed it! I started my music collection in 1974 aged 13 and my physical music collection is currently at over 10,170 discs- vinyl, CD, SACD, SHMCD, HDCD and other audiophile formats. I look after my shit and everything is in pristine condition. no need for expensive snake oil products and gizmos to "clean" records. I leaned from my dad who's 90- take care of stuff, don't lend or borrow and never buy used vinyl if you value your audio equipment! I never offloaded my vinyl collection but stopped buying vinyl in 1988 when I completed my switch to CD but I did ditch cassettes asap when mini-disc arrived and fully embraced MP3 downloads in the early 2000s and streaming more recently. My intention was to stop buying physical discs and rely on streaming new music mainly to solve my problem of running out of storage space! It had the opposite effect- streaming opened up access to so much more music that I "must own" in physical format. My buying became supersized! I live in a multi format eco system. I have no time for the zealots who cling religiously to their binary format of choice- that is just BS! Every format has its place- try playing vinyl in your car ffs! Streaming is for discovering new music and for listening in the car and on the go. I listen mostly to CDs at home but decided to bring my vinyl out of storage in the attic after 30+ years now that I'm retired and to experience the rituals associated with listening to vinyl- all the faff and hassle every now and again listening to a classic from my collection. I must admit its very rare- too much hassle!!! The hype around the vinyl "revival" is 100% marketing and lifestyle. When I see kids spending a fortune of vinyl then play it on some cheap Crossley Turntable it sets my teeth on edge. A totally pointless exercise. It's always about the music- each disc has a special memory for me- the collection traces my life and evolving tastes over 6 decades. The audio equipment is also important- you want to hear your collection at its best. It really is worthwhile investing in a good system without going overboard and becoming a complete audiophile obsessed bore (I'm right on the cusp). I buy more discs today than at any other period in my life- divorced and retired- so much time to enjoy my collection and follow in nostalgia, I'm not one of those old boomer farts whose musical taste/development stopped at 1979 and is confined to a narrow musical genre. I have a wide eclectic taste- Good music is good music. Look after your disc collection- NEVER SELL ANY OF IT- everything always comes back in fashion and you will only regret it- you will also spend a small fortune trying to recreate that collection later in life! Your music collection will grow with you and provide you with a lifetime of music and memories. It's not a waste of money, it's a sound investment and an investment in sound! Good luck with your collection.

I buy CDs to convert to Flac for when I work, drive, or do housework when I’m not around my stereo system. Prices of CDs allow me to branch out and try other music a lot of music I have LP/EP version and CD. Some newer music is forced on to three, four, five (Pearl Jam Gigaton), or six sides or the track order is messed up (like Tool Lateralus). CD or streaming were the standard when pressing the LP version. I love Puscifer albums, but I find myself listening to the CDs more because if I listen to the vinyl version sometimes I only listen to side A & B. So sometimes I skip vinyl releases if they are more than two disks with newer recordings. This is very different than older recordings. I’ll listen to the full album of the Pink Floyd’s the Wall, Genesis The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, and Yes Topographical Oceans because each side is recorded to their full length. All of this was considered when they were planning the album. I also don’t know how different the LP version of new music sounds to CDs if they were recorded digitally. That is not something I am able to comment on.

Used cds will inch up especially double disc deluxe edition or imports like stuff issued on Cherry Red. Cds of then current material issued in the late 80's -mid 00's will always be cheap because many were made. Reissues usually only go up in price especially if there are bonuses. Bad company's original albums for instance were reissued in double disc form and those are $20 plus and moving upwards. I mostly collect soul and jazz and have seen double to triple price increases when stuff goes out of print especially obscure stuff. Box sets outside of the early to mid 90's will go up as well. I'm cd only and typically pay $10-15 for most titles. My main focus now is promo cd singles with rare mixes.

I remember back in the early 00's the normal justification for abandoning cds was a cross between the ease and 'freeness' of sites like Napster, and the supposed expensiveness of buying cds new. I never understood the mentality. Cds could be bought new from between $10 to $25 tops. How is that too expensive? Plus, the format was and is more compact, less prone to damage (unless you're a careless tool) and easy to store, the packaging was great, and you could play them portably or in the car. Conversely, the same people will now pay upwards of $50 for vinyl which takes up more space, is easier to damage, and cannot be played outside of the home. And no, vinyl doesn't sound any different. If it does the difference is so infinitesimal as to be non-existent. It's all just hipster snobbery. There's no logic whatsoever to the attempted murder of what was arguably the best physical music format ever created. I still happily buy cds. I probably have over 5000. They sound great, and having an organized home library looks great too. And unlike this streaming nonsense I never have to worry that a band or album will suddenly just disappear due to licensing issues or cancellation by some woke idiocy. What I own is mine and I can listen to it forever. As long as I can find cds I'll continue to buy them.

I've been collecting both vinyl and CDs for nearly 40 years (I'm old). I have a massive CD collection which I've transferred to a music server, which I've converted to lossless FLAC files. I stream my music from my PC to my main stereo system via a Logitech 'Squeezebox Touch' (which unfortunately has been discontinued for more than 10 years). The DAC built into the 'Squeezebox Touch' is decent enough on it's own, but I hooked up a Schiit 'Modius' ($200) DAC to it, and it made a significant improvement over the built in DAC of the 'Squeezebox Touch'. I also run my music files off of an nvme m.2 ssd gen 4, and that also made a noticeable difference in sound quality over a mechanical HDD I was using in the past. I have all my physical CD copies at my disposal if I want to listen to those, but having all my CDs on a server on my PC is just so much more convenient, and with the addition of the Schiit 'Modius' DAC into my system, it makes for a much more enjoyable CD listening experience. Great video. Keep up the great work.

Not one of my used CD’s costs more than 5 bucks, with new releases costing just about the same as they did during CD’s heyday!! Less space, unaffected by minor scratches and sonically superior, anyone buying vinyl in 2024 should have thier head examined!!!

I agree with some of this, but I have never had to clean a record, whereas CDs tend to be more easily scratched

CDs can get scratched if they’re not handled correctly, but nine times out of 10 they will still play perfectly. On a record you can hear every scratch and pop. If you buy used records often times they are dusty and dirty and could use cleaning.

Sold all of my more then 400 cd collection, ripped every one first and have them on several drives, using roon as a music server and by my albums digitally. My collection in roon is almost 3000 albums. Vinyl albums is the only thing i buy nowdays because of the sound.

Wow, the comment section didn't disappoint! And by that, I mean all the usual same old, tired old eyeroll-inducing and nauseating talking points. Sigh...

The sarcasm is oozing from this comment. Well done?

"Vinyl community "...that cracks me up. Tons of cash to get a turn table to sound half as good as a CD. Excellent CD players in used music stores stacked to the ceiling and shame on you if you pay more than 80 bucks for a CD player that was 300 new. Five dollars for any used CD or 20 bucks for an abused copy of Who's Next? ...I have tons of vinyl I bought when it was a simple pleasure...they sound lousy compared to CDs. Been into music since 81. CDs win...hands down.

Have to disagree with you there. I have CDs that sound terrible and I have vinyl that sounds terrible. On the other hand, I have vinyl that sounds great and CDs that sound great. I don’t think one format is better than the other. Each has its own distinct sound which works for some, and not others. At the end of the day, it’s all about the music. Whatever format makes you happy is the best format.

be aware disc rot

Is this actually a thing? I’ve heard mixed opinions. If you store your CDs properly, I don’t believe disc rot is an issue.

Redbook CDs are horrible compared to good analogue! 44.1k/16 bit was never good enough for hifi! Id rather pay more for LPs, you get what you pay for! CDs are cheap because they are worthless and obsolete, especially when digital is much better these days! SACD or hi res streaming is a much better choice!

44.1/16 reproduces a sign wave perfectly between 20k and 20khz. Not close, not sort of. Perfectly. If a good source is used it will reproduce it far better than any LP can and its provable with science. Tape does not store sound like some wavy line. It's pulses that have gaps much like digital and when played and the right speed? it reproduces the complete sign wave. Like LP, Great. But it's not "better" than CD. And not get me started with frequency response.

Completely useless. If you're not an audiophile what is the point?..., just stream. What a total waste of time and money.

Appreciation for the physical format, artwork, and enhanced sound quality that comes with physical media is a waste of time? Either your definition of an audiophile is different than mine or you’re on the wrong channel. The point is that there is more to collecting than just sticking to one format. Huge difference between collectors and audiophiles even though someone could be both. Thank you for watching.
