That’s one I hope will get an official release sometime. I never bought a bootleg as it couldnt match the 4k and Atmos on AppleTV
@Timonike10 ай бұрын
I've never bought a bootleg and don't plan on doing so, but I must admit Disney's stance on physical media in particular has meant that it has crossed my mind in recent months... Like most of us here, I'm a huge fan of the Marvel & Star Wars shows so when I saw that Disney were releasing the Mandalorian etc. on Blu-Ray I knew I'd be picking them up! My issue with streaming is that the quality compared to a Blu-Ray or 4K Blu-Ray is often far far inferior and the experience isn't necessarily the best and/or in some cases even what the creators intend it to be. A 4K Netflix/Disney+ stream for example doesn't look anywhere near as good as it does on even a standard 1080p Blu-Ray (at least, that's how I feel anyway) so until streaming becomes comparable or better to physical media, I'll be sticking to my disc-based collection. 😄 Then there's the whole "you don't own it" argument which is a very true problem. If you stop paying for these services, you lose all the content. When I pay for my Blu-Ray, Disney aren't going to come round my house and take it away from me in a month's time! Physical media means I can go on to show my kids, grandkids etc. in many years time what I was watching whilst I was growing up without having to pay for a service which by that point may not even be a thing. Not to mention, paying for all these different services is getting expensive! About £60 a month contributes to all the streaming services I'd use! It's getting a bit unsustainable now! As well, like some platforms have already been doing, they can pull the plug whenever they want and stop you viewing certain content or they may even change it to be more politically correct etc. if the content is deemed too "controversial" in the future. 🤔 Physical media is not only the highest quality form of the content that is available to consumers, but it's a great way to preserve content (no matter what it is) for future generations. A good example is the 1966 World Cup Final. The original colour film was lost in the 60s, meaning the B&W footage was the only readily available format people could use! It's only in the last 5 years or so that technology has allowed us to restore the B&W footage and experience a huge piece of British History just how some of our ancestors did all those years ago. (That Blu-Ray is now in my collection!) That colour version of the game will always be available to people for generations to come now. 😄 Finally, I understand why bootlegs exist because one of the most annoying things about physical media is when companies don't release all of a series/film series. I have many Blu-Rays where the company behind it stopped physical media releases of a series and it drives me insane! (Some examples: Lost In Space (Netflix Version), Mars (Nat Geo) and currently the Mandalorian (S1 & S2)). There's no guarantee that Disney will release all their shows & films on physical media so you may be left with a partial collection, or in some cases, no release at all. Therefore, I respect your decision in the past to buy bootlegs because in my eyes, "piracy" over the last 15 years or so has changed slightly from being all about getting free content to actually being more about content preservation for the future. If companies make it easy for you to purchase their content for yourselves then I'd always choose that option to support them! After all, the content wouldn't exist without them & their creative minds! But, if a company makes it unnecessarily expensive or difficult to access their content, or don't release their content in a physical format for consumers in an acceptable time frame after release, then I think that's on them for missing a trick when it comes to physical media. (Rant over! 😂) Great video Paul! Been loving the content recently! Looking forward to seeing what you've got in store for the year to come! 😀

Thanks for your very detailed explanation with many points I agree with. Streaming is getting expensive if you want the best quality, I currently pay £17.99 just for Netflix. We’re kinda locked into subscribing to them. If i cancelled my subscription to Disney+ I’d no longer be able to watch the Star Wars or Marvel shows and i think I’d rather pay the extra and watch them in the best streaming quality. The only time I’ve found a streaming movie looked better than the 4k disc was the ‘enhanced IMAX’ MCU versions I was blown away by then quality. I was also annoyed they never released the rest of Lost in Space on Blu-ray but sometimes I try to look outside the UK as it’s possible our counties have released seasons that we don’t have. Take for instance the series Glee, I think the UK stopped at season 4 where as Japan releases the other seasons, even though they’re quite expensive. I hope Disney continue releasing their shows on disc but for some shows I think they’re waiting for them to conclude before releasing complete boxsets for shows such as Cobra Kai and Stranger Things.

I don't own any bootlegs and don't plan on getting any but I can completely see your reasoning. I think the biggest fear is Disney+ could at anytime delist a series/film on a whim, I will 100% put money on them dropping Prey at some point even if its just for a limited time. So physical media may be dying but it'll never fully die for that reason.

The reason I personally own bootlegs: Cannot get any internet service where we live outside of 50GB capped HughesNet that is on par with low tier DSL, the internet in the urban parts in our area WILL NOT support the bandwidth required to get 4K streams/best available version through streaming, and the simple fact that a streaming service can remove any content from their service at any time without any reason & without a way to access a viewable copy (outside of 🏴☠️ sites/bootlegs). I have been collecting physical media since the VHS days, slowly upgrading to the best available quality as time & money will allow. I own EVERY available Disney title in either 4K or Bluray (outside of the titles that only have DVD releases). I won’t even get into the other 8k or so titles outside of Disney (Shout/Scream Factory, Arrow, Second Sight, etc). Would I much prefer to support those who put their heart & soul into the work? 100%. But when companies lock their titles behind streaming services & never release a physical product, I will either grab the 4K streaming webrip from a private tracker or bootleg from Aoerway (~$5-7 USD per title).

Well done Paul. You're right, there's no point. The shows are in 4K DV on Disney plus, so why just have a HD version? I don't think Disney are gonna release everything on physical media. while I've gotten quite irritated to find out that 4 of the TV series sets on DVD I bought on eBay were cheap knock-offs, some argue that pirating from certain companies (e.g. Nintendo) is a moral obligation, it could be argued that bootlegging D+ shows would also be morally correct.

It’s one thing if you knowingly buy a Bootleg but when Covid hit there has been allot of bootleg’s coming from China especially on DVD especially tv series where they sell it as if it were a official release and they over compress to get everything on a single disc, You can tell by the GB size. An official release on dvd is 7gb and the pirated ones are 4 GB and the problem is the artwork and disk look very professional and hard to tell the difference. The other giveaway is when eBay is listing stuff that has not been released by the studio yet.

Bootlegs are a no go, if you support physical media you buy legit. If it's not available on disc bit easily accessible via streaming then that should be good enough. Bootlegs are a problem, I own one, Michael Mann's The Keep as that has never been available outside of VHS. Buying Bootlegs damages cinema, it takes money from the people who worked long days and hours and puts it into the hands of criminals and that is something I cannot get behind.

And the ones where that issue is a little sticky? Song of the South had a limited VHS run in the UK and those go for hundreds now & it could be argued the copy I have isn't entirely legit but the source it came from, technically is, because in Japan the film became public domain so the laser disc version was ripped to the one I have. If a film is never going to be released properly (see The Pagemaster, Fright Night II) then what's the other option for collectors? And it's not like most collectors are sharing them around, it's for one person to their personal collection, I don't see the harm in that myself.

I know people have made digital rips of my book and as a creator you just have to swallow that hard truth that some people are just gonna steal your hard work or profit off of it but by in large most wont. Ive got a handfull of bootlegs only issue ive ever run across was my Mando Season 3 blu ray had some audio sync problems on occasion but since most of the characters have helmets on you wouldnt be any the wiser unless you look directly at the lips of the person talking.

This is the emotional manipulation at its finest. The majority of the people here in the comment section have fallen into this mindset that if you do not pay $15 a month per streaming platform to watch a few shows- who refuse to release their content on physical, that you’re somehow a bad person. It’s their loss and someone else’s gain. Where there’s demand, there is supply. Either you fill-in or someone else will. The other side of this argument is that even when these studios release their media on physical, they expect you to pay abhorrent prices even if you’re purchasing something that is over a decade old. I should not be expected to pay $200 for six seasons of better call Saul on Blu-ray. There are those who would argue that I should just buy the DVD. I could, but it’s more expensive than if I just bought the bootleg Blu-ray, which mind you, is in Blu-ray pixelation, but has the bit rate of streaming platforms, and a good portion of the time they are cheaper than the DVD itself. Tell me who in the right mind is going to pick the DVD over the bootleg in the situation? You get worse quality, both pixelation and Bitrate wise. It should also be stated that these companies do not care about you. They just want your money so standing behind these companies as if it makes you better than someone who’s not is pathetic.

Yes you were very silly spending all that money on bootlegs of very mediocre shows, and the point you're making now is that you're over bootlegs .....because Disney lost a lot of cash and their hoping (correctly) that people like you will buy an official release because Obi Wan will have a nice shiny picture on the front of a steelbox. Andor and the first series of Mando were ok but really don't see the appeal of Wandavision or Loki and I doubt any of them will have the rewatchability of proper decent television shows.

I love a good bootleg

I still feel they have a place in putting pressure on streaming companies to release on physical, where they've said they won't. Without people showing them the market is there, bu buying bootlegs, I honestly don't think a lot of the attitudes of the streaming companies would have changed, even if they were/are losing money. I do, as others have, throw away bootleg copies when I buy a legitimate release. I won't pass it on to anyone in case they just watch that instead of buying the official release... and, as I've said, I want the streaming companies to produce proper physical releases so want *other* people to buy them when they do (and passing on an unofficial copy could have the reverse effect). Obviously, that said and as stated, I would love to return to a time of refusing to have a single bootleg in my collection because I know I could get an official copy, whether I had to wait a long time or import or whatever... I'd much prefer that to be the case, but right now it sadly isn't.

Yes I think maybe some of the Disney executives have been checking out the group forums and seeing what’s being sold on eBay and realised they’re losing a load of money by not releasing official discs.

And also bootlegs dont have any special features or proper sound 5.1/7.1 atmos etc....

Good video, but what the hell were you thinking, these are not Official Disney/Marvel titles? Utter waste of money, and saying i wanna fill that shelf, what rubbish was i listening to, like omgggggggg, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING, SERIOUSLY!!! Like who gets the money you spent on Bootlegs?

It’s just fellow physical media collectors who make the bootlegs. The market is quite big as many big films still haven’t been released officially so people will buy bootlegs to complete their collections

The marvel & Star Wars shows haven’t had an amaray release in America. Steelbooks only

Are you sure? I remember seeing some blu-ray hunts in America where they showed Amaray versions 🤔
