I just moved back to the UK after 7 years in the Netherlands. (I'm British). I agree with all the things you say in the video which is why I recently moved back to the UK, especially about the hospitals and how organised things are in NL (I work as a doctor and trained in NL). The UK healthcare system is so shit (to work for) compared to NL. Seriously considering moving back to NL after experiencing working in the UK NHS for a few months. Hope you enjoy being back in the UK! One thing I didn't anticipate was the sort of home sickness feeling for the NL after moving back to the UK.

I was shocked when I saw the title! And honestly a little sad. I started watching your channel before I began interviewing for jobs in Rotterdam. I haven't made the move yet (offers so far have been better in the US), but I've been practicing my Dutch with the motivation to still make the move... So... I dunno. Thanks for making this channel! It's been nice following an anglophone in The Netherlands while considering the move myself.

Emotions are unexplainable. The feeling you experience if you away from there where you really come from is a strange one. I lived in the UK for 3,5 years and it was great. At the end, I was glad to be back at the long run. Good luck and be happy.

Hi Elise, I'm a Dutchie living in London since 5 years and I can relate to so many of your pros and cons on both sides. I've liked watching your Dutch content, it kind of feels like my opposite life (I'm sure we would get along, there must be Dutch people that you click with!). I've been having the same thoughts about adult life and what's next, if I ever had kids I don't think I could raise them in London. Most of my friends here are expats too, and I feel like I'm missing out on time with my friends and family back home. So I completely get you (but the housing situation in NL is truly terrifying). My favourite things about the UK are pub culture, full English and free contraception. Your last point about the UK politics is by far my biggest con. When I think about first past the post and the current cabinet too much, I need to stop myself or I'll leave today rather than tomorrow. Such a shit show - pardon my French. Anyway, I hope you have an exciting life ahead in the UK!

It must be nice being able to live in your home country and still envision a future where things are good for you 🥲 Being Brazilian and living in the Netherlands, I can never see myself going back. There's no amount of coziness and feeling at home in your own culture that's going to outweigh the cons. Glad you can afford to make that decision. The Netherlands isn't perfect and if my home country was good, I think I'd never have moved.

What i mean by this is, it is unfair to compare the netherlands with the uk when talking about geography, when the uk is literally the size of 3 and a half beneluxes. We dont have great hills in the netherlands no, but unless you live in wales or scotland or on the countryside, we are closer to serious mountains, and just as close to hills.

The con of it being hard to get a job without speaking the native language should in my opinion be a pro for the Netherlands. Because in how many countries can you actually get a job at all if you don’t speak the native language. Good luck doing that in France! Or even in the UK! How do you see a Spanish speaker who doesn’t have any English skills get a job in the UK?
@BlueFire94
@BlueFire94 Жыл бұрын
At the end of the day, even if you learn Dutch. The language itself isn’t valuable on a global scale. French, English and Spanish more widely spoken and accepted. So there’s an incentive to improve them if you are skilled migrant. Think about it, if this wasn’t the case many Dutch people like yourself wouldn’t be speaking English as a second language.
@sanderdeboer6034
@sanderdeboer6034 Жыл бұрын
@@BlueFire94 I agree Dutch is not a language you should learn as a foreigner if you are just coming for a holiday. However if you want to become a dutch citizen and life and work here for a longer period of time, learning the language is a must! And I feel it as an insult to say dutch isn’t valuable on a global scale. Because in the end every single language is valuable, especially the small ones. Even French only has 97.1 million native speakers in the world. Nothing compared to the 500 million Spanish speakers or the over one billion Chinese speakers. And again you missed the plot with your reply. My post was about the fact people are lucky to be able to work only knowing English and not the native language. I have had many foreign colleagues over the years and on the work floor English was mostly the default language. However when they visit on birthday parties or other social events not knowing Dutch really impacts their experience. The rule is that in every country you want to intergratie you NEED to learn the native language. It doesn’t matter how few speakers there are in the world.

Hi Elise, very well balanced video! And I would say that you are right about the vast majority of pros and cons and other facts concerning Dutch and British culture, for as far as I am able to judge the pros and cons to begin with. One thing however: History wise spoken concerning the area which is called The Netherlands now, at least has got the same rich history as the British Isles do have. In fact, there was a time (long, long ago) where there was no North Sea and there was land between British isles and The Netherlands. And later, much later when the Romans conquered large parts of Europe, they did conquer a large part of what now is called The Netherlands (land south of the River Rhine), and of course that other European country which is called The UK now. The town I grew up in: Leiden obviously at the time had a Roman name: Lugdunum Batavorum, so the heart of the city of Leiden basically is about 2000 years old. So if you have not found any deep History in The Netherlands, you may not have looked out for it... ;-) Sorry about that, but I had to straighten this out, as you may understand ;-) Did you know that the vast majority of all Scots have Belgium (Flemish; Dutch speaking) heritage...? This is the reason why many Scots actually have the family name of Fleming Have fun in The UK, you are absolutely right to go there, but let me say one thing: You'll be back ;-)

I heard a similar story from my mother. She emigrated to South Africa, and she just was not the right person to emigrate. Neither are you. That is not bad at all, it is just a personality thing. Good that you found that out. I wonder if your friend is also going to the UK? Personally I love Anglo Saxon culture, but I hate the way UK society has developed over the past fifty years. It is unequal, messy, corrupted, infested by authoritarian influences, and the elite sees people as tools, not as people in their own right. Sick. But, I can see that you chose for security and the knowns and be more comfortable in a place you grew up in. I don't envy you, though. The UK has made very bad decisions and it will be "not a very pleasant country to live in" for the next generations.

@@dodododo995 Brexit and a big influx of non-Eu immigrants will lower the earning (lots of cheap labor) and purchasing power of the average UK worker. So, less tax paid, so either borrowing or less public spending. With the libertarian brainwashing press you will also see an influx of big (US) pharma and the further dismantling of the NHS. Lastly on goods, the UK cut itself off the most richt and nearby market for the most part, and on services they are completely cut off. The people have no freedom of international movement, students and scientists are blocked from getting knowledge to or from the UK and research into new science is therefore hindered. I could go on for another day, but you get my point. Oh, did I say that the political elite does not have the common good at heart?

I wanted to move to the Netherlands, but decided against it, as I'm already 30 and living abroad is a huge cognitive load, for me at least, as my Dutch is far from ideal. I've been an immigrant my entire life and know what it feels like, moving to another country in my thirties would be like setting the difficulty to Ultra-Violence or Nightmare. The housing crisis is another huge reason why I probably won't be moving to the Netherlands anytime soon, as I don't want to end up getting scammed and losing all my money. It's interesting you list healthcare as one of the pros, as I've been told GPs in the Netherlands tend to prescribe paracetamol to their patients for just about any illness because they basically feel pressured by the insurance companies not to prescribe expensive treatments.
@computerfan1079

@51bikerboy
@51bikerboy Жыл бұрын
The opposite is true in many countries doctors are put under pressure to prescribe certain medicines by the pharmaceutical industrie to get extra bonuses even when a normal paracetamol works just as well. The Dutch government doesn't allow the pharmaceutical industry to gif such bonuses. We also believe that the body is able to cure far more by itself, so let the body heal itself only when the body can't heal itself the doctor prescribeds medicines.
@natalieb6956
@natalieb6956 Жыл бұрын
Im sorry but the whole paracetamol story is completely false. The reasons why huisartsen / GP's (the first doctor youll see when something is wrong) subscribe them first is because of our practical healthcare system. Lots of people come in with little things that doesnt need medication at all, you just need to let your body restore itself. Paracetamol (or ibu profen but thats less good for your stomach) is suggested so you dont have too much pain or anything when your body is healing. Mostly what theyll say if youre not okay in 4 days then call us again. Then theyll exam you again and if neccessary send you to a specialist. Its to make sure the waitinglists at the specialist are short. Doctors dont get paid by pharmacy thats one of the reasons why they dont sell you expensive medicine but paracetamol first instead. Of course insurance companies wants to keep it as cheap as possible so the prices of our insurance stays affordable. And im not sure but i thought insurance companies here are owned by the government and / or cant make profit at least.

@treeehez8586 Жыл бұрын
@51bikerboy bullsht! I have GI problems and GPs here in the Netherlands give you nothing! I am here most experienced with the healthcare problem. The paracetamol which you guys worship is so bad thing to have every pain. The most illneses are from bacteria and if you dont get away you are more vulnerable. You need to get antibiotics for a small period in which you truly get cured of the disease. But here they joking with bullshit resistance of bacteria what not happens mostly of medicine you use it is mostly happen of not good medicine that is used for certain illness. Dont blame me, blame our system of responsible giving to pateints of the sickness!

We as dutch people cannot go to vacation for a long period because you need to pay the rent of the house. Since you are international and you are native English speaking, what about going to Malaysia or Indonesia, why dont you want to live there permanently and buy a house etc. Lot of job opportunities. By the way, man what a long long video that was. People in netherlands and also in UK are in urgent crises and you are talking how nice the world can be. You will not have an opportunity to buy a house in UK UNLESS you have lot of cash money !! and second the goverment wants to take all your savings away trough the Central bank Digital currency system, they want to force people to put money in the economy and convert ownership of house and car to owned by the state or semi investors so people will be slaves into next generations to come. there will be no way to make a better life or free life.
