i started being a vegetarian back in august 2018, and i stuck with it until april 2019. i loved being vegetarian, it made me feel healthy for the most part, especially around the beginning. at first, i was eating pretty healthy, sticking with the whole grains and fruits and vegetables. after a while, though, i realized i was eating nothing but carbs. i craved carbs, and only carbs, and my body was just NOT doing well (weight gain, acne, always tired/hungry, things like that). im going to just stick with chicken and fish for now, no red meat, just to see if that helps, along with eating better in general of course.

omg same girl!! i've been vegetarian for 6 years but this past summer I randomly started craving meat like crazyyy (like i would literally go to bed and wake up thinking about meat which had never happened before) so i was like mmm i think my body is trying to tell me something. so i went and got chick fil a (HAHA it was my first time and I wanted to see what the hype was about) and since then have been eating meat for the past ~4 months. and though i think i'm going to go back to like a 90% vegetarian diet next semester, i think it's totally fine that you're eating meat again and you don't need to be apologetic at all!! even not having eaten meat for 2 years/watching what you're eating now makes a huge difference so don't let anyone guilt you into feeling a certain way!

I relate a lot to what you said about vegetarianism. I mean in general, I don't eat a lot of meat just because I am an insane carb addict haha, but there a lot of reasons (definitely can be pegged as selfish reasons, but I think nonetheless valid) that I don't think I could ever commit to vegetarianism long-term. First is definitely the culture aspect, not that my own culture relies heavily on meat (I mean I'm white sooo that whole argument is kind of irrelevant haha) but I love the idea of experiencing other cultures through food (thank you Anthony Bourdain for helping to instill this passion in me

"white" isn't a culture. 🙄
@august81326 жыл бұрын
@@ESWilliams09 I just meant that most people usually associate their culture with their ethnicity, but you're right, some people associate it with where they were raised and other factors...but personally, as a white person, it is hard for me to pinpoint specific things that I would consider a part of my "culture" and I think a lot of us struggle with that...white people tend to be less in touch with their ancestry and lack traditions associated specifically with ethnicity (traditions among white people are almost always instead associated with religion)...overall, as a result of colonization, white "culture" primarily consists of the appropriation of other cultures, you know what I mean? Sorry, I didn't mean to offend...you're right, white isn't a culture, I just meant that white people often don't have unique foods or traditions that they would consider to be exclusive to their ethnic background if that makes sense...
@ESWilliams096 жыл бұрын
Culture includes your language, your food, your holidays, your religion, the clothes you wear, the music you listen to, etc. etc. Every individual's culture is a little bit different, and it is not really tied to race. "White" isn't an ethnicity, there are German customs, Italian customs, Polish customs, etc. etc. ALL CULTURES.... YES, ALL CULTURES, are the result of cultural appropriation, that is how all cultures evolve. Cultural appropriation is simply the exchange of the things I listed in the beginning, and yes, sometimes culture spreads by force, but sometimes it also is shared voluntarily. No culture is original and nobody "owns it."
@august81326 жыл бұрын
@@ESWilliams09 Going back to what started this discussion, food, my point in all of this was that other racial/ethnic groups in the US often have stronger emotional associations with certain foods that they consider to be a part of their culture, but that is certainly less common of a sentiment among white Americans (also yes, American isn't technically an ethnicity, but considering how disconnected most white Americans are from their German, Irish, etc. ethnicities at this point, I think the distinction is a bit irrelevant). Like for instance, to draw from a recent experience, I took a class this semester called Culture, Lifestyle, and Health, and at the end of the semester we had a potluck where the professor wanted us to bring in a dish native to our culture. There was an interesting correlation that I noticed, in which the majority of the white Americans and African Americans in the class did not bring in a dish, but most of the Asian American and Latino American students did bring in dishes, and had stories about what the dish meant to them and how they associated it with their family, etc. There definitely are distinctions when it comes to the connectedness people feel with their cultural background along the lines of race/ethnicity in America. This largely comes down to migration...in the early days of the United States, most of the people who immigrated here (forcibly or not) were from Europe and Africa; however, now, these two continents make up a very small percentage of our immigrant inflow (42.8% come from the Americas, 39.1% come from Asia, and then there is a huge dropoff with only 9.6% coming from Africa, and 7.9% coming from Europe). Therefore, in the context of America, I have personally noticed that Asian Americans and Latino Americans have a greater connectedness with their cultural background than white Americans and African Americans. I also just want to note that I am not trying to be combative or anything (I hate how things come across sometimes on the Internet), but the reason I keep responding is just that I want to make sure to clarify my argument so that none of this is being misinterpreted :)
@ESWilliams096 жыл бұрын
You think the ones I mentioned don't have food and drink customs? Lol you have never met Italians or Irish I guess. That's like VERY OBVIOUS in popular media/culture. I have recipes from my "very white" ancestors that I brought to a similar class. Yes, as the "melting pot" effect of integration occurs people become less attached to their ancestral "homeland" and their culture begins to evolve. That is literally how culture works in general and has nothing to do with race.

The fact that you are conscious about the food you’re putting in your body and aware of the repercussions of it is more than enough. I am slowly starting to decrease my meat/dairy intake for the sake of the environment and such. But meat is delicious and it is in a lot of food. And I totally agree what you’re saying about the cultural reasoning. What you put into your body is 100% up to you, and it’s no one’s business to tell you whether it’s right or wrong. Kind of confusing because all the vegan Koreans I know have no issues recreating their cultural foods with vegan substitutes. Definitely understand how turning food down in front of elders is uncouth and rude! It’s a little disingenuous that this is your justification though because if it was true wouldn’t you only eat meat in those specific situations instead of at every meal?
