Two collecting weak points: 1) Wanting to collect too much of a kind (divers, dress) at the expense of getting other styles you also want or 2) buying doubles/triples of a model (one to rock, one to stock). You always move on to the next thing and ignore the one you stocked. Great video as always!

I used to have the bumblebee and almost bought the retro limited blue edition but decided to sell the bee instead (didn't want to bother with battery changes for the monocoque case). I still have my vintage 300m and wear my Arnie quite a bit as my beater (though it's not really a Tuna, just "Tuna style"). Still have an urge to get another 1000m Tuna but I'm resisting it. So far.

My 2 biggest weaknesses in collecting: 1) Buying a watch I won't like to wear just because it goes so well with one I already have, and, 2) Buying a watch because it's so cool or interesting even if it's one I'd never enjoy wearing.

There are tons of beautiful watches out there that are not my style and would not get much wrist time, but in a way it would be nice to own them because of maybe what they represent or what brand they are etc. Collecting something for the sake of... collection? Just because you don't use it, doesn't mean you don't get any satisfaction from it.. or does it?

I feel brand overlap can actually be a key part of building out a collection. I match my watches to my attire, my surroundings, my activities, and my mood. To the degree there is overlap in these things I have overlap in my watches. It is the overlap that can allow for just the right variation for the situation. So if a brand, a model, or a style is something you like I see no issue with owning variations of it. There is no other area of my life that I can be so free to change things up constantly.

I came off watches after the hype of the pandemic, it was too much, everyone and their dad was suddenly a gray market dealer and it pushed an unreal need for materialism. Videos like these are really good to bring you back down to earth, enjoy what you’ve got. Tbh TGV was a big purveyor of having big watch collections, this is a huge and welcomed shift.

I became a fan of watches years after I inherited by dad's Submariner. It seems to be a great universal watch that goes anywhere, so despite the hours I've spent discovering amazing watch designs and histories, I'm still just rocking this silver Rolex. Plus it has sentimental value. I sometimes tempt getting a second one to fill-in when the Rolex goes in for servicing. This idea motivates me to keep watching great UG content (and Nekkid Watchmaker).

Great show T! I definitely don’t wear the Explorer as much as I though I would! Design wise, feel wise and look wise it’s still one of the best no doubt! It’s just maybe not fun!!! Like that superb Blue Squale! Casios definitely don’t count in a collection let’s get that right now ok!!!!! I’d say with grey market ….. do your due diligence. You buy not just the watch you buy the dealer and for me a dealer like BQ Watches I know with a huge team of people and a brick and mortar store is one I’d definitely recommend!

TGV - On the note of creators staying relevant without a big collection, I'm left wondering why we need to stay relevant? Why do we feel this need to create channels that are popular forever? If massive television studios can at best make shows that are popular for a decade and then they fade away, why do we as individuals believe we can do better? As the platform we upload to changes and viewers tastes and interests change, we should expect that at some point we will fade into obscurity as well. It's inevitable really. The choice we get to make is how we will handle it though; will we handle it with grace and accept it, or will we resort to rampant clickbait that soils all the hard work we have done? As you point out, that's the beauty of making solo content that you are passionate about. You don't have to stress about paychecks for yourself and employees, and even when the views aren't there, you're still having fun because you enjoy the topic.. Sorry for the diatribe, but you raised a very interesting topic.

This is a really great point my friend. There's sooooooo much to talk about here. I think we should honestly just get on a zoom call one day and hash it out, one creator to another. For me its because when I started 10 years ago, there was VERY few people talking about watches on YT. Today, I can't keep up, its too much and there's people with massive channels I have never even heard of. Part of it is my responsibility to keep people informed as much as I can, without it becoming an arduous job. Another is because I care about watches, their future, the industries future and I want to grow it. But I feel, not everyone is in it for the good of the industry and enthusiast.. I guess this becomes more a discussion about moral and ethics in business, the nature of consumerism and the whole evolution of social media in how it relates to the watch world. I accept fading into obscurity, trust me, I have Marcus Aurelius on a custom made pendent on my chain everyday for a reason. ⁠​⁠@@jipkethey aren’t a luxury brand hence the lack of baggage. That doesn’t mean they don’t make a good watch. SWATCH Group is very strong and hammers it home if it those looking for an easy entry to Swiss mechanical watches. Hamiltonis good, but from the same group, there’s Longines, Mido, Tissot. Hamilton has a certain cache in the States, that’s partly due to its historical ties to Lancaster PA, those other three have sone watches that check similar boxes just as well. I digress. They are solid watches, yes they lack the stigma of other brands, however- who cares what other people think? In actuality, the vast majority of people aren’t looking at your watch and will be ambivalent. A truly fine watch can be absolutely spectacular. That doesn’t mean one need to aspire to own one, but they are worth appreciating for what they are.

I have recently sold all of my watches for a single watch (barring an inherited gold Accutron Astronaut, and the Seikonaut I was married in thanks to your channel). I am soon to be baptized and confirmed Catholic and needed to make way for the milestone piece. The Hamilton Khaki field I’ve had for the last year has made me realize I truly do not need more than 1 solid daily wearer. I haven’t worn much else. For my budget I have settled on the black dial black bay 41, a spiritual successor and more rugged watch to the explorer 1 which will continue to be out of my budget for some time I feel. I have come to understand that I can love and adore so many watches without owning them. What a sigh of relief that has been 😅

Early on this year I identified that my biggest watch collecting weakness is the FOMO created by social media so I nuked my social media accounts and then I sold my small collection of 3 watches to restart my collection. Got me a brand spanking new Blackbay Chrono Panda (first time getting a new nice watch) and have been wearing it as my only watch for almost half a year now. After going thru the purge, I found that it has allowed me to get to know myself and what I want better as I am no longer focused on what other people are wearing. I’m starting to think that maybe my ideal collection could consist of just two watches: a Coaxial Speedy Professional paired with the BB54 for when I want a dive watch AND a vintage wearing experience. At this point, I really prefer the carefree feeling afforded by new (or near new) watches and the warranty that comes with them.

The key is to collect for enjoyment, not for your identity. Any good thing in life can become toxic if it defines who you are. I think many people who follow you TGV get this. It is why we like the ‘under the radar’ explorer, or the Casio. It demonstrates that there is an appreciation of the finer things, whilst not being defined by them. 🙂 As always wonderful video TGV. I picked up a BLNR on oyster back in late-May. It was a watch that I had my eyes on for a while and almost gave up on. In fact, when my AD reached out to me inform me it had arrived, I was in talks with 3-4 other private sellers for other Rolex sport models. Anyways, I have since sold ALL of my other watches that were in rotation and sold others in the months leading up to the purchase of my BLNR. I have no regrets and I've worn my BLNR everyday for the last 3 months.

Hey , you being a gentleman and actually into watches for their heritage and finishing seperate you from the rest. Your channel will alway stand above the rest . Your a classy gentleman and I don’t say that lightly . Iv been watching you for years and years and I try to be more like you as far as view on watches. And it’s worked. I’d rather have a grand seiko than a Rolex. Sure the average person will say it’s a seiko and not as sexy as a Rolex. But that’s fine. You taught me it’s about what makes you happy not pleasing others. Don’t change a thing your channel is the best and the classiest watch channel . Much love from New York

And a pleasure to see Hugo - truly, an episode without Hugo is like a day without sunshine :) You get a free pass on Casios - they have virtually no resale value, so keep 'em all. I love Casio. I was big into audio gear before getting fully into watches, so learned a lot of my mistakes from collecting high end audio gear. I have been focusing on avoiding these mistakes in watches to not mess up. 1. Keep a small focused collection (6-8 max). This keeps my collection focused and every piece is highly impactful and what I love the most. 2. Don’t buy everything and flip. I used to buy all the gear and flip. It felt more like nothing was mine and rather I was just renting. Always seeking collection and the next thing. I wanna focus on enjoying each piece in a deeper way. Been a fan of the channel and watched every video since 2016. The best videos I love is not only the watch videos, but the videos of culture, history, and the art of being a gentleman.

We all collect watches for different reasons and get rid of some from time to time. Your mention of Rolliworks had me going to the internet to look into as you were quite satisfied with their service but there were a few negative reviews on line. But I am curious if you’ve ever looked into Zimmerman Watch Repair in York? A few years ago I needed to have an older Rolex repaired and my local Rolex dealer sent it to a shop in York, Zimmerman Watch repair. About 6 months ago I had an opportunity to meet a retired watchmaker from Germany who lives nearby, his credentials were impressive! He “gave numerous courses to watchmakers in Germany (with Omega), USA (with Omega and later Movado Group), Switzerland with Rolex as Zone Manager and Technical Trainer in Geneva and later in China being responsible for the apprenticeship program there and the continuous training of the existing watchmakers.” Over lunch he mentioned working with a young couple who’s business is high end watch repair and restoration as well as being one of the few authorized Rolex repair centers. Apparently Rolex has pulled their support from many of the repair shops leaving only a few RSC. Maybe you’ve covered this in the past but your sending your Rolex to Rolliworks got me thinking. It always good to have a relationship with the right people.
