Denon was industry standard in the day. If fanboys would get off alpha-theta ( it’s not pioneer), Denon would likely be back in most booths.. Why because they make more creative DJ gear..They need to work on the quality but at the current price point I can replace two Denon Decks to one Aloha Theta.

Denon was never industry standard, or at least not for the DJ/club industry. Technics were the industry standard for turntables and then Pioneer took over when it brought out the CDJ-500 and remains industry standard today with the CDJ-3000 30 years later.

@@londonpirates Back when the standard was 1200s, the Denon 2000F (came out in 1992 and was the first ever pitch adjustable dual CD deck on the market) was in every booth next to those turntables. They were also in every bar, pub, skating rink you name it. They dominated the pro CD player market. In 2000 Pioneer came out with the CMX-5000 but it failed to take off. When they brought out the CDJ-1000 in 2002 it also did not catch on as it was clunky and did not work well. Once the CDJ-1000 MKii came out, they finally hit the nail on the head and it took off. Denon had some really cool tabletop players at the same time around 2001 with features like a motorized spinning platter and alpha deck, but since they were so massive in the DJ industry they really did not push them heavy. Once Pioneer started handing out packages of CDJ-1000 mkii and DJM 500 mixers to big name DJs to use at all their events you really saw them take off and become the standard.

@@PerformanceProjects I'm in the UK and maybe it was different in the US but although the Denon 2000F was probably the most popular choice for pubs and mobile wedding DJs (there were plenty of alternatives from Numark, Citronic Gemini etc). 99% of dance music DJs in pirate radio studios, raves, bars, free parties and clubs etc. stuck firm with records and Technics. In 1994 the Pioneer CDJ-500 broke new ground with its top loading layout and jogwheel. The CDJ-500 made the CD format more familiar and more acceptable for dance music DJs, although there still wasn't really any significant shift to CD until the early 2000's. There wasn't ever a situation (at least not in the UK) where DJ's were putting Denon 2000F (or any other CD player) on their rider like they would with a 1210 or now with a CDJ.

I understand your thinking. I had to convert denon to pioneer to play on cdj 3000s a few weeks ago. I borrowed a cdj 3000 for a few days to run through its paces. Here’s my thought. The only thing on the cdj 3000 that is better is the platter. Everything else is out of date. The processing power can’t keep up with the software. The setup functions don’t make sense compared to some of the options in recordbox and you are extremely limited in terms of performance features compared to the denons. The performance features wouldnt be handled by the current processing power if they were added and in my opinion the device is outdated. There is latency when selecting cues and loops. This was on the most current firmware. I hope they give you what you are looking for. I would personally not make that change and just convert denon data to recordbox when you need to. If you are mostly using the players for simply playing music… then it’s fine. But for performance features.. the denons are light years ahead.

Hi mate - thanks for the balanced response. I honestly can’t argue with that. The challenge is in the grand scheme of things I am a no one, trying to get some gigs, which is tough enough as it is to try and stand out from the crowd. I fought the good fight years ago on a different scale when everyone was playing FIFA and we few chose PES. Similar thing - some things may be better than others but swimming against the current when almost everyone else is doing the other thing makes it tough. In that case I stuck to my guns because it didn’t matter - for this though, for any change to matter it needs to come from the top down, ie promoters, venues, big DJs. Having said all that…. yep I definitely feel like a sell out still 😂

I play dnb and I have not encountered a single issue in years of having my setup like this... Hi mate - thanks for the comment. I came from 1210s and before that belt drive Gemini PT2000 so only learned on vinyl. Two and a half years ago I changed to digital and a started a new journey so I understand your point and I think it’s important to have that foundation even if you are starting to learn today on digital only. Engine itself is not limiting - the choice is more of a comfort factor, and maybe I’m being a big baby about it 😂 I want to know that what I have practiced across the three decks and the MPC, is the same as in the club. There may be a point in the fact that I’m not as versatile as other DJs, so increasing familiarity with the tech made more sense for me, but get it’s drastic and there were other options.

It's such a shame that this company (Alpha Theta/Pioneer) have such a hold over our industry. DJ's feel backed into a corner to buy thier bland products for fear of not getting gigs if they don't. You used to see all sorts of mixers in booths. Lets just hope they don't get hold of Serato as well. To be honest we should really be making a stand rather than switching to thier platform out of pressure, but it's easier said than done.

Personally for 12 years and counting i haven’t switched full time to Pioneer kit and I’m still sticking to Traktor. For the money they are asking, Pioneer just doesn’t make sense and I’m not about to drop a used car price for gear that’s inferior to a 800 dolar console. My strategy has always been to just ask what kind of space they have in the booth and decide if it’s worth it to bring my s4 mk3 + x1 mk2 combo. If it’s a short set with limited space, I’ll stick to my x1 with CDJs in HID, if the space allows and/or is a longer set, it’s my full rig. I also have a Rekordboxed SD card for backups and impromptu play, but everytime i play with them i get a reminder of how tragic the looping system is and how idiotic they behave in some ways

It's funny that we've reached a point where the only positive thing people really have to say about Pioneer over Denon is that it is 'industry standard'. The problem though is that being industry standard is super important for DJ'ing. The club grade equipment isn't really portable so most of the time you are going to be using the equipment you find at the radio studio, house party, club or wherever else you may go. Although the equipment all works in a pretty similar way if you really want to feel comfortable then is makes sense to learn your skills on the same gear. It is a real shame though because Denon really do have a great product line which in many ways is superior (and certainly cheaper). I think eventually enough people could buy Denon gear for home use that we'll see a gradual increase of Denon adoption in the clubs as those young DJ's coming through into the clubs want to be using the same gear. To prevent that the next release from Pioneer will have to not only catch up on key features but also offer additional key innovations that Denon doesn't have.

I'm so happy I'm old enough to have learned to play without any digital features, but rather which part of a track I'm gonna play and quickly use some simple math to know from where to start a track to get to the mix out point on the outgoing track. Now with quantized loops and hot cues available, sometimes it makes life in the booth easier, and it speeds up the mixing when needed in a way not really possible without the digital features, but at the same time not getting dependent on those features. I'm not a famous DJ with a raider giving me what I prefer in the booth. On the contrary the clubs and managers depend on me to deliver a good experience whatever is in the booth, as long as it's Pioneer club gear, even if it is a first gen CDJ-900/2000 and a DJM-250 mixer without any effects but filter knobs. As long as the gear can read my USB's or if I get the time to prepare CD's or even a Vinyl set, I'm good to go. And no, I don't trust Engine to read my RB USB's. I've tried several times and it doesn't work. I have the Numark Mixstream Pro, and it doesn't work on that either. A huge part f how I mix rely on me using the CDJ mode which does not exist on Engine gear, and I would be stuck in the way I play real vinyl, and that's far from how I play on digital gear. But it's fun to use at home and it's interesting to see the development of Engine, and maybe one day they will implement the CDJ mode again. I don't think they realize how many of us old in the game actually prioritize to play in CDJ mode, but when they do, it shouldn't be hard to add as a new feature on a software controlled system like Denon and Numark. The question I ask is why they still only allow for an ancient analog way of cuing and starting a track, when everything else is pushing the digital agenda on all other aspects of their gear.

(If the audio is already clipped at the recorder/camera/preamp, then try reducing that pre-amplification-level and add a compressor on the channel in post-production to get the volume you want) If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask... Just so you know, i found your channel via *DENON* not via Pioneer. you will have a whole lot to dig through when it comes to the Pioneer KZbin algorithm. To that, best of luck. IMHO you just went from being almost at the top to run downhill just to have to begin from scratch. I have been part of this industry since early 90's and i have used most dj gear under the sun, everything besides vinyl and 1200 /1210's

 To be a dj should be considered similar to being an artist, and have you seen any other artist that borrows gear from people or venues help them create art?

A musician, painter, other types of creators as well?
No they don’t.

 There are three ways to go around this slippery slope

1. Use the gear that is provided and hope for the best. cause in more times than one you will eventually suffer, because the stationary gear will almost be broken or worn down in some shape or form. The upkeep are seldom done the right way or in time needed.

2. Write down a *RIDER*, cause if the promotors, agents, audience appreciate what you do, the demand for you performing will grow. And you wil lget what you ask for

 3. Bring your own gear, no matter what brand. One thing is for sure, your own gear will work at least 9 out of 10 times and will be in *PRESTINE* condition, sure you spoil the audience and the promotor or venue owner, but i do not stake my reputation on faulty gear. One more thing, if you are locked on playing bigger venues, YOU NEED TO BRING YOUR OWN PRODUCTIONS, That way your will get what you ask for both regarding economics and riders And it saddens me to see and hear that people, both young and old dj's have to sacrifice their future masterpiece like a *Mona Lisa* for lesser gear that makes absolutely no difference when it comes to development or career. Sure Pioneer, sorry Alpha Theta are in most booths, but it's also the weakest link, why? They all sound exactly the same, same filters, same boring echoes, do not matter if you stick a RMX 1000 in between, i used to love them. But now they are just boring AF. And i'm so freaking tired to pay extra for less , and also have to argue about features missing that should be a no brainer in the first place What do you think will happen to your CDJ 3000 that are also running on its last leg? (Lifecycle), absolutely no more firmware updates whatsoever, cause Pioneer have a 100% strict policy not to mess with its hardware even if it means sacrificing some customers in the long run (Paying Beta testers) To be fair James Hype are the only dj / producer that really needs X-X-X-X decks. even if he limits himself just to loop, hot-cue and echo / noise his sets But i respect the mans hustle he is making bank and gets to tour the world. Big ups for that. I know what it means to drop 7-10K on dj gear, i'm even contemplating to buy the Opus Quad, more because its a furniture then pure dj gear. it would suit my studio when it comes to design, but on the other hand, there will be a couple of firmware updates, 3 usbs are not enough, no real performance pads. Bluetooth takes forever to connect and much more. i played 4 cdjs long before even sync were a thing. and buying three or four 3000$ decks just to loop or hotcue is waste of capital, especially when wages for djs are decreasing, i know for a fact djs that get payed $50/€ per 5-6hrs evening shifts at local clubs, and to ad insult to injury, they get fewer and fewer gigs as well and that will take them forever to repay that 8-10K investment. Denon had 4 deck play in the early 2000s, nothing new, just it was way harder to keep everything aligned.

So the point being is this, do not let hardware or software limit your potential stardom, personally i use whatever gear that can help me evolve as a dj, and the most important thing, besides gear and all the tricks and effects in the world, is the music. It’s more important to play the right tracks then beatmixing 100% all of the time.

To me as a technician i think Denon are lightyears ahead of Alpha Theta. They are running on fumes right now, same as Apple when it comes to their design and price.

So when you deside to scrap your CDJ 3000, the DN6000 just got a new Engine OS update.

They have so much going on for them, owning all the brands under their umbrella like *AKAI*
just take a look at Ableton link, or sound-switch in the hardware itself, *GENIOUS*

Most promotors, venue owners are cheap and do not want to pay the extra for good equipment, thats why you almost only see the CDJ 3000s on big festival, but ask yourself one question, why do they need 7-8 machines in a booth if they are so reliable? *Wish you the best of luck, Watching your pure joy in your heart and genuine smile, alone should get you to the top*

If I were to be idealistic, it should be industry standard for DJ booths to have enough desk space to accommodate 3 DJ setups so you're not walking all over each-other, particularly to minimize the possibility of having to set up while another is performing. Only in competitions should set up during another's performance should ever happen, otherwise set up should be before the event commences. This to me is like restricting a performing musician to a particular brand of synth or guitar and stifles innovation and uniqueness in the performer's style.

Hi mate - this is obviously my personal opinion and I have heard the same as you, but I think the build quality on Denon was great. I think the horror stories are people’s bad experiences but that can happen on any tech. The support was ok, not great but not bad - a little slow but fortunately I bought mine through BOP DJ so I realised I could just take to them and they would organise the fix. I think since though Denon are no longer working with them for ongoing support … Personally I think Denon are great - my choices to switch were not because of build quality or features. I think you’ll love them

Denon SC6000M = 100% amazing except for how small the platter is... wish it was 10" for tighter cuts and scratches. But other than that the Denons destroy the Pioneers. Double digital outs, excellent feel buttons, fantastic digital display, fx, cues, loops, USB 3.2 inputs x 3 PLUS a SATA bay - I have a 2T solid state drive. If you mastered mixing, beat juggling and scratching in the 90's on vinyl like I did, then the Denons are state of the art

I like Denon and I like Engine DJ but... I don't want to manage multiple libraries and we all know what you're going to find in clubs. I know Denon works with rekordbox but it works better, natively with Engine.
@ebow707
@ebow707 4 ай бұрын
Hey chief, yeah I chose Engine for those reasons although I actually couldn’t pinpoint, because I didn’t so as much research into that side of it, what you gained by using the native tooling, it just seemed to make more sense. However, in hindsight even choosing Rekordbox with Denon might be a good angle for those looking for flexibility- like you say fewer libraries to manage and if you make the change - at least from a software perspective you are already there.

@@ebow707 But again, Denon works better with Engine than it does rerkordbox. How I play at home is with my CDJs linked to my home network and rekordbox running in Export Mode on my desktop, having to export to USB when I'm doing stuff at home is a dealbreaker for me. I know you can import your rekordbox library into Engine and I know there's third party tools available, but I basically want to live and die in one app.

That loop thing would be cool... 🤔 But indeed. Path of least resistance. Back in the day I used to DJ with timecode CD's with my laptop. And I had a gig. That was in 2010. The swapping cables while my intro track on CD was playing was nerve wracking. And then swapping back over to the next DJ... Horrible. Pioneer DJ / Alpha Tetha's eco system has the market cornered. It's kinda sad. I'm a DDJ-FLX10 user with Rekordbox and I like using it instead of Serato which I hate. But it kinda stings that I'm basically locked in while they're chilling on their ass because they have a monopoly regardless of how good or bad their products are.
