why i'm transferring to another college

bit of a rambly mess today but i finally got around to answering the questions!
these are my opinions based off of my own personal experience, so my advice may not necessarily apply to you! i think deciding to transfer is a very personal decision and can be made up of so many different factors (academic rigor, programs, professors, career prospects, social life, extracurriculars, location, school size...etc.) my choice primarily revolved around dance but there were definitely a lot of other factors at play as well.

Way to go! I agree that with transferring it’s important to stay positive. I know you will thrive at Barnard!! I’m transferring this fall from UNC Chapel Hill to Columbia, and I love to hear you so excited about NYC and your decision to move. It’s a great feeling to see someone sharing a very similar experience and to share their joy! For any other current transfer students reading this, don’t be scared! We’re going to do great!! For any prospective transfers, I agree, do try to get more involved in your current college before making the decision to reapply. (Even if you leave, it doesn’t hurt to have friends at that school!) And when you write your essays, do stay positive. The common app transfer essay/supps are basically a series of why this school and not the other. If you talk down on your current institution, schools may see you as hostile or resentful which is a) not the type of student they want to accept and b) what’s stopping you from saying the same thing about their school if you get in and it’s not a good fit either? To boil it down, especially when applying to more selective schools, there are a limited number of spots for many qualified and over-qualified applicants, the least the admissions office can do is accept the nice people! So be nice! Anyways, cheers to you, Izzy, and I hope your transfer this fall is an eye-opening and self-realizing experience! Go Bears 🐻 and ROAR LION ROAR 💙

Rainey Scarborough Hey! So, basically UNC just wasn't a good fit for me -- I'm from NC, so everything at UNC just felt like going to high school again but with more people. Also, I wasn't a huge fan of the importance of greek life on campus -- as in "you have to be in a frat/sor to have a social life" which is mainly what I felt was the case at UNC. Finally, I wasn't having a good academic experience at CH/ I didn't feel challenged. I felt like my classes were all big lectures without much discussion, and that many of my classmates didn't actually prioritize school. Columbia provided a good alternative to all of the things I didn't like about CH. NYC is totally different from where I grew up (and I love it already). Greek life still exists at Columbia, but it certainly isn't high on everyone's/many people's priority lists (people are generally more alt than that, and I personally enjoy that). As for classes, the academic intensity is definitely greater, and the work load is bigger, but everything I do has more purpose. For example, when I do a reading, I know we'll actually discuss it in class, etc. And the professors are amazing. Let me know if you have any more questions and good luck!!

Yes I felt the same thing during my admission process I missed my dream college by 0.39 % which was devastating one but got on with the current college which is also not that bad but I gave a go and I was supprised because it was more than I expected......

mid gpa mid sat dance major ---> hook, special application, doesn't apply to 99.99% of applicants (and she is a female) still no scholarship 6 years of undergrad at 85-100K a year

How much was the total cost of attendance of the 6 years of undergraduate education? And how does it compare to going to a community college, from a strictly fiscal analysis? Seems like a Ponzi scheme to me.

From the research I've done, 6 years of "vacation" masquerading as education cost roughly 650,000, whereas a community college education in the US or most EU countries costs somewhere between 1,000 - 4,000 a semester - including GRADUATE SCHOOL EDUCATION (EU only).

8:00 preach sister don’t chose your school because it’s a great stepping stone to transfer to chose it as your forever school I am a transfer student too but from a community college and it sucks not getting into my first choice (I didn’t apply but I talked to an advisor and look at my grade vs what they were looking for and didn’t have the grades they want) but I still like the school I’m going to she’s totally right it sucks being the last to chose from leftovers of classes BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY YOUR SCHOOL MIGHT NOT TAKE ALL YOUR CREDITS so don’t waste your time and money by choosing a school you don’t like like she said TRY YOUR SCHOOL OUT but if you truly don’t like it or want another major they don’t offer or anything else good luck in transferring but don’t put yourself in a position where you HAVE to transfer like settling for a school with the intention of transferring visit the schools you got in to!
