Watch this updated video about the REAL reasons why Paleo Diet ruined my health: • Why Paleo Diet Ruined ...
These are the 20 reasons why my husband and I quit the Paleo diet exactly a year ago. I'm grateful to it for showing me the beauty of whole foods, but it has also damaged my body pretty bad. As time passed, my thoughts crystallized and I was able to work out the best kind of diet for my own body, which is really called "Listen to your body" diet. I was also able to look back, reflect, and see all the things that went wrong after one year on the Paleo diet. You see, the problem is that the majority of Paleo gurus and leaders are men and they really aren't the best people to advise women. The Paleo diet may work for a lot of men (however, not all - just look at my husband's case), but women's bodies are different. Plus, we are all different and need different things. One diet doesn't work for everyone.
If you're wondering, we were following the Primal variation of the Paleo diet (as the one promoted by Mark Sisson on marksdailyapple.com), which allows mostly raw, organic dairy. We tried staying at around 100-150g of carbs and we also tried low carb below 50g (it was a nightmare).
Here's the article I mentioned about carbohydrates, fertility, and women's health: paleoforwomen.com/carbohydrate...

If you're on the Paleo diet yourself, what's your experience been so far? Did you try it in the past and struggled? I'd love to hear from you, especially if you're a woman.

I will watch. Sounds like your potassium tanked. You said your mum has low potassium too sometimes. Potatoes are rich in potassium but protein is low. Have you heard of gitelmans? Maybe a mild form of that runs in your family. I will watch the update now

You are not describing a paleo diet, you are describing a low carb or ketogenic diet perhaps which you based on paleo foods but paleo doesn't have to be low carb at all. you can eat 1000 carbs a day or how ever many you want on paleo. So maybe rename the video and stop spreading inacurate information! Also perhaps what made you suffer when going low carb could be a candida overgrowth or a food allergy, I never heard of anyone being specificaly intolerant to all paleo foods but doing well on non paleo which means proccesed unnatural foods, seems extremly far fetched.

Yes, exactly, because that's what KZbin is about. Sharing your experiences with others and hoping that others might benefit from them. Please stop being so fanatical. It's getting ridiculous. Your diet isn't the only good diet in the world. Accept the fact that different people need different things.

+Kelly Kizer It's incredible how many guys completely misunderstand the point. It's like it's either Paleo or junk food diet. There is something in between , you know? Paleo works so well for so many people because it gets rid of processed sugar, processed foods in general, gluten, and commercial dairy. However, Paleo also eliminates perfectly healthy traditional foods, such as gluten-free grains, potatoes, rice, and legumes. A lot of people run into troubles because of that and I did as well. And please don't tell me that rice and potatoes are allowed in the Paleo diet because they're just being embraced now by some of the leaders, but they surely weren't when I was on the diet and, honestly, once you add in potatoes, rice, and occasional legumes, it's not even Paleo diet anymore. It's just a real foods diet! People need to stop putting labels on everything.

+VitaLivesFree I understood your point. I think the paleo diet is a fad diet and it isn't healthy. People just love it because you lose weight so fast, but they don't account for how you lose weight. And the acne issue subsiding is only because on the paleo diet, there is nothing pushing the junk out of you, including your skin. When eating more fiber rich foods, it forces that junk out, then it becomes fabulous (I know from experience). But every cell in the body runs on carbs, so if you're not eating enough carbs (400 grams being the minimal recommendation. I don't think there's a maximum because we can only eat so much until we explode) then you're starving your body of energy. So I completely understand. Anyway, kudos to speaking about it because this paleo BS needs to stop.

Ayana Sioux Yes, I agree. Paleo is just another extreme, just like veganism. I think real health is somewhere between. xx
@AyanaSioux
@AyanaSioux 8 жыл бұрын
VitaLivesFree I wouldn't say veganism is extreme, however. I have been vegan for a year, and I feel better than I ever have. I'm a high carb, low fat vegan, and I think our bodies agree better with that way of eating. Plus there has been recent studies published proving that processed meat and red meat cause cancer, and that other meats probably cause cancer too. Dairy has also shown links to causing cancer, osteoporosis, and other ailments. Eggs have been shown to dangerously raise cholesterol levels and high cholesterol has links to issues like heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. I'd rather not take that risk and remain vegan because a lot of evidence is pointing to veganism being the best diet for humans. But of course, don't just take my word for it. Always do your own research. Hopefully you find what you're looking for. :)

However, none of the cultures have ever been vegan. Taking such an experiment with your health is a bit dangerous. By the way, I disagree with most of your statements about animal products. They sound like the arguments used by the vegan leaders. However, if you read the opposite side, you'll find very strong arguments as well. The truth is somewhere out there. Glad you found something that works for you. At least for now. xx

+VitaLivesFree Have you tried raw veganism ? I personally do not do well on grains and cooked starch , but you could still include starches if you wished . Certainly sounds as if veganism is something you would embrace , based on what you said about animals etc . I find high carb , low fat raw vegan with simple meals work really well for me . You have not said what regime is your preference , other than you need your grains etc . Just curious . . .

I did the paleo diet for over 3 years. I do high intensity interval training 5 days a week and work a physically demanding job(whilst eating on the paleo diet). I never had any problems with dryness of skin, energy, dental, hair, happiness, hormones, periods, headaches,constipation, etc. I've only just now decided to try vegetarianism because of my views on animal abuse. 4 days into it now. The paleo diet is great. If after a month I don't feel good about being a vegetarian, I'm going straight back to the paleo diet.

+VitaLivesFree If the blood type diet is so scientific why in the hell do people with blood type O improve their blood results on a plant-based diet? You obviously love spreading pseudo science and care more about anecdotal crap than actual science.
@Vitalivesfree
@Vitalivesfree 8 жыл бұрын
skillfuldabest The blood type diet is quite an old science right now and it was too limited. Genotype-based diet is an updated version and it's actually the most accurate thing I've ever seen. That explains why some people with blood group 0 do well on a plant based diet or why some people like me don't do well as vegans or vegetarians, but thrive on fish. That's because genotype comes in to play as well, not just the blood group. If you only listen to what mainstream industry/science says, it will be very difficult to find the truth. Everything is bought and sold. Discrediting certain things because they aren't backed by conventional science (although D'Adamo's work is and a lot of doctors recommend it) or because they're too old (like Ayurveda or Chinese Medicine), you can miss out on the most amazing things. This will be the last thing I write regarding this. :-)

+seraphx26 Yes, I think the Paleo diet can be a great starting point or a framework, but I don't see any point in restricting perfectly healthy foods like potatoes, legumes, and non-gluten grains. I think the website paleoleap which has some good information on it says that white rice and potatoes are "paleo" for the simple fact that they don't contain any antinutrients so I would have just followed what they said in my opinion and have the healthiest legumes with the lowest amount of anti nutrients basically if a food isn't going to negatively affect you it should be allowed.

+Char Covelesky it doesn't matter if they have anti cancer compounds, its a matter of if the anticancer compounds are even necessary if your eating all the stuff you should be anyways, as well as if the anti cancer compounds help you more then the damage the phytates would do to you, also its a matter of if we even evolved to eat and digest them in the first place, when you study evolution you find the answer to pretty much every question regarding human form and functions, diet, exercise, sleep, stress...etc. :) and your not thinking about it accurately :) but i completely agree that nature has a prefect balance, but we are apart of nature and thus have a specific place in it and lifestyle we correspondingly evolved under :) paleo isnt a diet, its evolution, everything else is a diet :)

This defintely shows there's not one perfect diet for everyone. Every single reason you have for quitting the Paleo diet is the exact opposite of what I've experience over the last three years of eating Paleo. My hormones have evened out, my anxiety/ tention/ anger/ depression have all gone away. My skin and nails are healthier..my psoriasis completely went away. My hair is thicker and healthier (noted by my hairstylist). My eyesight improved, my teeth don't hurt anymore. My gallbladder issues went away. My digestion is far better. I have WAY more energy, my creativity has soared. I only feel lethargic and sick if I stray off the diet and eat grains or lots of sugar. Overall I feel MUCH better, healthier and stronger..emotionally, physically and spiritually. Im glad you stopped if your health was being derailed. We don't all respond well to the same things. But as for saying its "not possible" to be thankful 3 times a day for your food and to the animal who provided you nourishment, implying it's just too exhausting to do so.....yes, it is most certainly possible. In fact that's the easiest, most genuine part of my day. Maybe it's just not convenient for YOU. Of all the things you had to say, that one point actually ticked me off because it's not about the diet or your health, it's projection onto others based your own abilities (or lack thereof). It's not difficult or exhausting to be appreciative all day long, as a matter of fact. Thank you for this video and reinforcing my belief that I made the best choice for myself and my health.

I've been eating paleo for a few months now, there have been times I've eaten grains (like oatmeal). I can tell the difference in how hard my body has to work to digest the oatmeal vs my paleo meals. My acne and teeth improved too, I hardly ever bloat on it, my bowel movements are great, my dentist said my cavities are "healing" on their own. I have much more energy. I eat as much as I want. I eat high fat, moderate carbs (so many veggies and berries). This seems to have been the best choice for me, although I'm not super strict (I have maybe 1 meal per week that is not paleo but still gluten free), I have still seen the benefits, It'll always be my go-to. It may be difficult at first but once I got the hang of it, it's pretty easy until I get a hankering for oatmeal.

Kelly Kizer I think she was saying that as a previous vegetarian(for ethical reasons) it was hard to keep finding excuses to convince herself to be thankful for consuming an animal 3 times a day. I thought that was pretty self explanatory. I'd be curious to see the scientific research behind "eating animals pain" being a reason that paleo doesn't work though. I also can't understand why or how a person who is vegetarian for ethical reasons can suddenly do a 180 & go paleo, which is eating a shit tonne of meat! WTF?!

I have two hip replacements and one is metal on metal, so in hopes to lose weight, paleo has helped me shed 38 lbs. over the past 4 months and it makes me feel so good. The only thing I had to do is make sure I got my magnesium and calcium so I wouldn't have constipation and such. I am not supposed to exercise, so the only thing that helps me lose weight (I've got at least 35-40 more pounds to lose) is a low carb lifestyle. So until I reach my goal weight, I will continue to eat the Paleo way.
@Spikesfeet
@Spikesfeet 8 жыл бұрын
Your video made me kind of sad because Paleo has been so good to my body and I keep thinking: May be she didn't do it right... Some things you mentioned don't resonate with me, at all. What I thought especially curious was that you talked of being constipated. I was living on a vegan diet for three years before I started paleo and was used consuming big amounts of vegetables on a daily basis. With that much fibre it was a struggle not become the opposite of constipated and I continued with this under paleo. So it made me wonder what you ate in a day... Also, as I don't include grains, legumes or dairy in a strict paleo diet - three major factors that can cause constipation - I have never been confronted with that problem. Especially cheese: the beta-casomorphin-7 in a A1 dairy products not only speaks to the opiate receptors in your nervous system but literally puts your intestines to sleep... Back in the early 2000s there was a study that researched SIDS in relation to BCM from dairy (the one in breast milk is different, by the way). It suggested that BCM in A1 milk puts the part of a baby's brain to "sleep" that controlls breathing, therefore causing sleep apnea. Another surprising symptom were your bad teeth and gums. On my vegan diet my eye teeth started to become kind of see-through at the tips which worried me a lot. However, this quickly reversed under paleo. After doing a bit of reading on the subject, I came to the conclusion that the gluten and lectines of my vegan diet were robbing me of nutrients. (By the way casein is similar to gluten in its protein structure) I also consumed lots of nuts - totally ignorant of the fact, that some of them are too high in omega-6 fatty acids and that they contain anti-nutrients that prevent your body from having access to whatever good stuff is in the food your consuming together with the nuts. You should either soak them or never eat to much and eat them seperately from your "normal" foodstuff. On the paleo diet my acne (which I had for 20!!! years) cleared up, my pre-athritic knee condition vanished into thin air. I no longer suffer from pollen allergy and dry eye. All of which accumulated over the years and which I put up with by thinking, oh well, I'm getting old. The only thing I miss from my gluten-based diet is that I don't have these super highs in energy anymore. Before, I used to get like this "spike" from eating pasta or bread made of wheat. But I never experienced lethargy like you described. I need less sleep now - before it was at least 8 hours, now I function really well on six. My fitness level stayed the same - I have to admit that I can't feel any difference, though I always kept very fit, and thus maintain a certain level. So by writing this novel-length comment ;) I hoped to give you some food for thought on what could have gone wrong during your paleo diet. Best wishes
@Vitalivesfree
@Vitalivesfree 8 жыл бұрын
+Spikesfeet Thanks for such a thoughtful and detailed comment! I'm really happy that the Paleo diet has done wonders for you. It just proves how different we all are. I also don't think that lots of dairy (especially conventional pasteurized cow dairy) or gluten should be in a healthy diet. But there are so many perfectly good foods that Paleo frowns upon, such as beans, lentils, potatoes, non-gluten grains. It seems to start allowing most of these things now, but it wasn't like that at all when I started. Paleo is morphing into a simple whole foods diet. it can't really be called Paleo anymore. Thanks once again for sharing your experience! I found it very, very interesting! xx

Your testimony indicates what we've known for a long time which is that one size does not fit all. We are all different and have different nutritional requirements. If I eat a high carb diet my insulin spikes and I crash. I've tested this thoroughly. Oh how strange - literally every single point you mentioned was exactly what happened to me when I went Paleo, but in reverse! All those issues have vastly improved in my body since going Paleo 3yrs ago (weight decreased, hormones re-balanced, regular and far less painful periods, hair / skin more beautiful, energy increased etc) ......it sounds to me like perhaps you were extremely low carb; I eat lots of butternut squash, carrots, parsnips, flaxseed etc and it really helps (I get very lethargic / irritable if my carbs are too low also). Upping my meat and fish intake has actually given me a new lease on life (genuinely grass fed / wild caught of course) and my husband and I now sleep way better and are far fitter and healthier than we were before. I find it so incredibly fascinating how different people's bodies react and respond to different things! It's all down to personal genetics and individual biochemistry I think. It's really interesting to me how you are addressing all of these issues seemingly without changing up your diet within the Paleo style diet... I have gone through so many different phases over the past 5 years of being Paleo. There have been months where I was running 30-40 miles a week; months spending hours in the gym every day lifting heavy shit; I've been pregnant, breastfeeding and mommying. In my own experience the Paleo diet has been extremely flexible. I have gone from eating 200-300 g of carbs a day (potatoes, plantains, cassava, beets, parsnips, carrots and fruit). It was never very hard to do either... I've also spend time in a low carb even ketogenic state and that was easy to do as well... I went through a time while I was pregnant and meat sounded terrible. I was essentially a Paleo vegetarian and I felt great. You have so much control over your macro nutrients in any diet. It's really not that hard. There's no magic number of chicken legs, potatoes or Tbsp of coconut oil you should or shouldn't be eating every day. The Paleo diet is essentially eating whole foods and removing processed foods. If you have a diverse diet that isn't lacking in nutrients (all of which you can get from whole foods) then there's no reason a Paleo diet can't work for everyone. It's such an easy diet to taylor to your specific needs...

+Grace South Paleo diet excludes extremely nutritious and healthy food groups, such as grains and legumes that my ancestors in Europe have been thriving on for thousands of years. That alone is a huge drawback of the Paleo diet. Also I'm not good at digesting fructose, and trying to get enough carbs on the Paleo diet was a disaster for me. Potatoes aren't part of the Paleo diet (nowadays yes, but they weren't allowed originally). If you consider Paleo diet simply any diet that excludes processed foods, that's not what it is. Glad you found what works for you though! 💗
@gracemiller8747

I agree with you. Grains, legumes and nuts (if properly prepared) can be beneficial to some individuals. I can even stomach some dairy, white rice, quinoa and legumes occasionally. It's true that the original Paleo template excludes white potatoes because of their anti-nutrient properties and high glycemic index, all similar reasons grains were excluded from the original Paleo template. White potatoes are extremely nutritious tho and just like some grains and legumes, if they are properly prepared and eaten very occasionally, they can be very beneficial. I also am from European descent. I find it very unfortunate that my ancestors lived on grains (especially wheat, barely, millet and rye) seeing as this is most likely why my family has "devolved" and passed down a very unfortunate autoimmune disease. I (along with 3 of my siblings, as well as my daughter) have Celiacs disease. I have a really hard time understanding how anyone could use the term "thrive" in reference to grains when there are SO many people who are suffering the consequences of our ancestors poor diet choices.

VitaLivesFree I think this is why we tend to fixate on a particular "diet". It's easier than doing the work required to find out what works for us individually. I'm a Vatta as well, so warming moist foods are best for me. Cold foods and particularly raw veg's are the worst. So I tend to steam veg's. Crockpot cooking for meats. If I may ask...are you using soy at all? And were you while on Paleo?

Robert Henry Yes, I don't do well with raw veggies well either, but I crave them during hot weather. I tend to have a raw salad once a day during the summer. During the winter it would kill me though. I don't eat soy now and i didn't eat it on the Paleo diet either (apart from tiny amounts of miso or wheat free soy sauce a couple of times a month). xx

If they ate like their grandparents did, they'd be a lot healthier. It's funny how just a couple of generations ago (here in the US) there really wasn't anything called "health food". Everything was pretty much healthier food. So, the 64,000 question is: If health food can be found in health food stores, then just what is found in mainstream grocery stores? Ha! I think we know the answer to that one!

+Going Cuckoo Not if you buy organic grains and soak or ferment them. I wouldn't agree that the ketogenic diet has proved itself at all. It's a good therapeutic tool for some conditions, such as epileptic fits, but it's not a good idea long term. Especially if you're a woman and care about your fertility. Of course being vegan means that your tooth decayed, but nobody says you have to be a vegan. Why go from one extreme to another? What happened to moderation and common sense in the modern society? xx

Wow, so many comments on this video, you really struck a chord here! :) What's funny is that I felt the same symptoms having moved from paleo to ketogenic. Paleo works well for me and has given me nothing but balance and keto for me was too much like what you described. I think that goes to show that to each body their own, carbs are up to the individual, especially as women. All diets work AMAZING for a group of people and it becomes "we should all!" but honestly there is variety for a reason. What matters most is learning how to listen to your body and be kind to it. thanks for posting this, it helped me tons and i'm sure will help many others. complainers are only proof of touching upon something real.

I definitely can relate to a few of your problems when I followed the paleo diet. I lasted about a year, at 6-7 months in I had a complete mental breakdown. I had no energy, I had the worst anxiety ever. I mean, I was in and out of emergency with it. one bonus was that I fell pregnant naturally, so fertility wise, I believe that it opened that door for me, but it could have been another reason. I lost 12kg in the first 2 months, but then it plateaued. I was so aggressive and frustrated and I am sure lacking energy was one of the leading causes of this. Thanks for your insight. its helped a lot x

Interesting video. I'm glad you found what works for you. It makes me wonder if you were taking care to up your salt intake high enough during your Paleo attempt. And refined salt is not the recommended, instead it should be sea salt or Celtic as those contain important minerals. You do lose salt through water loss on Paleo and low salt will cause fatigue and other serious side effects. The loss of salt without upping intake would also cause your iodine levels to be lower which would be unfavorable for your thyroid which controls metabolism and is the master hormone for all other hormones. Am also wondering if you overate protein and did not include enough green veggies. In general you should have 50% of your plate full of vegetable and you can include about 1/2 cup a day of sweet potato or other root vegetable. Just some thoughts crossing my mind as I watched.

I was on the paleo diet as stated in The Paleo Diet by Dr. Loren Cordain. Which means fresh fruits, non-starchy veggies and lean meats. No dairy, salt, sugar, grain products or starchy veggies. Other variations are out there allowing for honey or using nut flours for baking but I didn't do that. With moderate exercise I lost 90 Lbs. I think you should state what type of paleo diet you were on. Sounds like you weren't getting enough veggies or fruit in your regiment. I never had any energy issues or headaches after the first 2 weeks of detoxing.

You judge my experience based on your experience, which isn't fair. If the diet worked so well for you, it doesn't mean that it's supposed to work for everyone. I did state in the description that I followed the Primal Blueprint. I was already eating a clean, whole foods diet before Paleo, so it wasn't really an improvement for me. Quite the opposite actually. 2 years on now I'm finally feeling great eating lots of gluten free grains and legumes. Fruit was a poison for me (I have fructose malabsorption) and trying to get enough carbs from fruits and vegetables was a nightmare for me. xx

Hi VitaLivesFree - thanks you for the information --- I have just started looking into the Paleo diet. Do you think that your blood type might have a part to play in your issue with the Paleo diet...? O type blood is supposedly meat eater, A type blood is supposedly vegetarian, and B type blood is supposedly middle of the road and can be either or. So if you are an A type blood, then the meat part of the Paleo diet might be a clash..? What do think..?

I'm starting to think it's a lot to do with blood groups. Especially when I look at my family's experiences. My husband did quite well on the Paleo diet and he's a 0. Ya, I know A's can handle vegetarian and vegan diets better than others, so that makes a lot of sense. I definitely take the blood type into account when assessing my clients as well. I know you talk about what is a real paleo diet, vs what isnt, and its very true. A lot of people out there say they are on paleo and don't actually eat paleo, As I mentioned before, I don't stick to it 100%, I go in burst. But I think moderation in life is important, and although I like to aim for optimal health, sometimes joining in a family gathering that includes unhealthy food, is sometimes good for the soul and bonding. The paleo diet does not equate to a low-carb diet. Virtually this entire video describes symptoms common to a *low carb* diet. The essence of paleo is that grains (other than white rice), industrial oils (like canola), and improperly prepared legumes (especially soy) have toxins novel to the human genome, and it is unpredictable when consuming these will catch up to you. Yes, naturally fed meat is more nutrient dense than most other foods, a variety of vegetables are healthy, etc., but the gist of it for most people is avoiding toxins. You can be low-carb *and* paleo, but they are two different things. If your hormones got messed up, low carb easily explains that. Most of these symptoms are associated with hormone dysregulation. This is a well-known and recognized phenomenon which is why most paleo gurus and forums warn you that a low-carb diet is not for everyone. See: chriskresser.com/is-a-low-carb-diet-ruining-your-health/ It may be that Mark Sisson does not provide proper warnings. That is unfortunate. I recommend looking at Paul Jaminet and Chris Kresser's sites and books. Some people do very well cycling on low-carb/ketogenic, but many do not. As for your teeth and gums, I honestly have to question what you were eating. If you cut out vegetables, that is not paleo. Non-starchy vegetables should not be restricted unless you have specific reactions to them (like a FODMAP intolerance). Perhaps severe endocrine disruption can hurt your teeth, but I haven't heard of that one.
@Vitalivesfree
@Vitalivesfree 9 жыл бұрын
I was eating 100-150g of carbs which is moderate carbs and Paleo doesn't really support going higher than that. Most Paleo gurus are against white rice (except maybe Nom Nom Paleo and Paleo For Women) and beans (even properly prepared, with the exception of Chris Kresser). xx
@forrestschaaf7248
@forrestschaaf7248 9 жыл бұрын
VitaLivesFree On any version of the paleo diet, you can eat starchy vegetables like sweet potatoes, and sugary vegetables like beets and carrots, and all fruits. White potatoes were once suspected, but now most embrace them. White rice is becoming embraced as well, which is key for sushi! But even if you don't eat potatoes or rice, there are many many choices of high-carb foods. I strongly recommend "The Perfect Health Diet" by the Jaminets. That recommends about 1 pound of starchy vegetables plus 1 pound of sugary vegetables and/or fruit per day. There is some detail about why carbs are probably desirable. He has a lot of info on his site, here is just one article defending carbs: perfecthealthdiet.com/category/nutrients/carbohydrates/
@forrestschaaf7248
@forrestschaaf7248 9 жыл бұрын
VitaLivesFree Also, regarding constipation - that is also associated with low carb. I believe it has to do with failing to feed the lower intestine flora properly. It's always a good idea to take probiotics on any diet, and possibly prebiotics if starches aren't doing it for you. Few people seem to have really healthy flora, and antibiotics destroy them.
@Vitalivesfree
@Vitalivesfree 9 жыл бұрын
My video applies to traditional Paleo or Primal, not to modern versions that allow potatoes, beans, rice, etc. Unfortunately, most people try the regular version and fail, especially women. I feel it's my duty to warn others using my own experience. The versions you're describing shouldn't even be called Paleo anymore. It's just eating real, whole foods. Why put labels on everything?
@forrestschaaf7248
@forrestschaaf7248 9 жыл бұрын
VitaLivesFree So if you said "real, whole foods", most people would think that wheat, soy, and canola oil, as examples, would be included, because that is the conventional understanding of that particular label. The paleo belief is that those all damage your body, starting with your gut, and it catches up to you sooner or later. These days, usually sooner, witness the obesity in America where we eat GMO wheat and more of the industrial oils.

Many vegetables like Asparagus, Beetroot, carrot, Aubergine, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage have more carbs than rice and other grains. I rely on vegetables for carb, vitamins and other calories etc.. Also diet for humans are not consumed based on heritage. Every species has its own diet, and Humans too have a diet that applies to all of them. Diet is not based on the origin of a country. For example all animals have the same diet even it is from a different country. Humans invented different diets to show class and distinction. That's why we have several countries having national diet, which is stupid and ridiculous. Its been thousands of years and even millions of years since humans have evolved and we are the ridiculous species to invent diets that creates diseases. And day by day our diet sucks due to preservatives and chemicals used to make the food look better and stay long enough.

Paleo is FANTASTIC for O blood types.... It's PERFECT for O blood types. I would bet money that the person who made this video is not an O. By the way, I have gotten my blood cells examined by a naturopathic doctor and there was a huge difference when I cut out things that aren't good for Os. I only studied what O blood types need but I do remember that A blood types benefit from berries in particular and a vegetarian diet. Os are the opposite - they do better with meat. I dont know if there is a "diet" out there for A blood types. Most likely it's just being vegetarian. There are certain foods that really harm your, certain foods that are neutral, and certain foods that act as big time beneficiaries. For example, chard is a vegetable that is really, really good for me, more so than other vegetables.

VitaLivesFree I'm editing this answer as it had an over-simplified tone. I would just say that you definitely can eat 1000 cal. (250g) of carbs per day from all paleo foods, and there are examples of hunter gatherers who do. I can't think of a guru who wouldn't recognize this as necessary for some people, although Mark Sisson definitely lacks disclaimers on his recommendations which is very unfortunate. Trying to follow well-meaning advice that isn't right for you is indeed incredibly frustrating, and I commend you for sticking through it and figuring out what worked for you.

***** I'm confused, is it purported to be difficult to eat 1000 cal. in carbs from starchy vegetables and fruits in one day? Sweet potatoes are high in oxalates and that can also cause issues if you eat a lot of them. Why limit yourself to just a few carb sources (and limit the variety of nutrients as a result) instead of eating a great variety of healthy carbs, such as potatoes, white rice, pseudograins, and properly prepared legumes? Luckily, Paleo nowadays is starting to accept those things, but when I started, unfortunately it wasn't like that. The Paleo of today is more like just a simple, whole foods, real foods diet. Can't really put a Paleo label on it anymore.

You don't have to buy commercial meat, so your arguments don't really mean much if we're talking about making conscious choices for the source of your meat. +VitaLivesFree Before you judge that halal is inhumane at all by all means do your research and practice what you just preached in this video. First of all I think you're just an ignorant hippie and not very well researched. Your opinion is irrational and has no factual support which makes everything you think as irrelevant. Putting aside that halal meat is a religious practice, the main purpose of slaughtering in Islam is to avoid from torturing animals, contrary to what you actually BELIEVED(as I said, you simply shared an UNRESEARCHED opinion). Why I said to prevent animal torture is due to important elements that MUST be incorporated in Islamic slaughtering; 1)a very sharp knife & 2)slitting the throat(there's a particular spot/vein that only experienced slaughterer would know) in one swift movement so that the animal is INSTANTLY killed. if an animal is found to still be alive, and this will only happen if number 1&2 mentioned are not satisfied, meat is considered not halal becaus

VitalLivesFree I wonder if you are blood type A. I follow doctor D'adams's BTD and blood types A are ideally vegetarians or pescatarians. I have been listening and reading much about the Paleo diet, but I feel that it is just not right for me. I am trying to reduce my carbohydrate intake because I was eating a lot of (healthy organic Spelt) bread. Now that I eat less bread and smaller portions of rice, I have been able to lose weight and feel good. Turkey and lamb are also OK for me. Have you looked into the BTD?
@Vitalivesfree
@Vitalivesfree 8 жыл бұрын
+Deborah Garber Yes, indeed I am a blood type A. I also looked into the blood type diet, but I'm not so convinced anymore. I didn't eat chicken or red meat for a few months because I thought they were causing silent reflux, but then it started again even though I wasn't eating meat anymore. Now I think it was lack of magnesium that was causing my issues with meat previously. I also got rid of h. Pylori and now I eat all kinds of meat and have no problems with digestion. I don't think I'm such a big fan of D'Adamo's theory anymore. P. S. My sister who is also an A tried to listen to my suggestions and cut out red meat. She ended up with iron deficiency in just a few months. She felt great while she was eating liver, beef, and other things that D'Adamo says is an avoid for A's. She also has Celiac disease which should mostly be the issue for blood type 0. I'd say listen to your body above any diet guru. They're in it to make money. You're in it to preserve your health. xx
@deborahgarberhealthcoach
@deborahgarberhealthcoach 8 жыл бұрын
+VitaLivesFree thank you for your quick response. I don't think that d'adamo is only in it for the money. There is a genuine scientific basis for his elaborate research. It is important to know your secretor status and genotype as well as just blood type. I eat lamb, chicken and occasionally beef (an avoid). Personally, I too feel that beef is not bad for me. But overall, the recommendations of the Paleo/Primal diet are just too heavy on proteins for me. I have a sensitive stomach and a tendency towards eczema and IBS. I find that when I just eat protein, my digestion is not so good. Definitely going to try bone broth!
@Vitalivesfree
@Vitalivesfree 8 жыл бұрын
Deborah Garber Absolutely, I agree with you. What I learned from the blood type diet and the Genotype diet is that gluten free grains and legumes are vital for me. If I try to get my carbs from fruit and potatoe/sweet potatoes only, I feel horrible and my blood sugar rises. If I eat grains every day, I feel great and my blood sugar is great. That's probably the biggest lesson I learned from it. xx

I find this so strange because my Paleo experience has been the complete opposite of yours. I have PCOS and Insulin Resistance. I have struggled with hormonal issues, infertility and weight issues for most of my life. After just the first six months on Paleo my blood labs were normal for the first time in my life, I lost weight, my hair stopped falling out, my skin improved, my severe migraines stopped, my doctor took me off of all perscriptions - some In had been on for 15+ years, my cholesterol improved, my bowel movements became regular, my hormones balanced and my cycles became regular for the first time in my life without the help of birth control, my vision improved to the point that my glasses prescription had to be weakened, I was happier - less moody, the "brain fog" lifted and I was able to concentrate easier, my joints were healed - including my TMJ....there are so many reasons that Paleo was good for me and my husband has his own list of benefits too. We have now been Paleo for two years and have never been healthier!

Hi, I just found your video coincidentally and I was quite curious about it due to its title/heading. OMG! I am alarmed by all the things you're saying. It's really exactly the same thing I experienced on a low carb diet (ALL reasons you mentioned). I used to be a vegan with digestive issues (as long as I can think, all my life) and hoped for relieve by l.c. I indeed got a (seemingly) healthier gut, BUT my whole life turned around though I was experimenting with sodium, more water, more / less fat/protein. Nothing helped me except starting eating carbs again. Like you, I grew up on grains, never had blood sugar issues, never had energy levels that down, never had such a bad mood at all, never had high blood pressure. I am so grateful for sharing your experiences. I was thinking I just did something wrong before. Thank you so much!!

Green-belly Hi! I'm so glad my video has been helpful. It truly is so confusing trying to understand what's the best way to eat and what works. It's hard work! Since I made this video, I have actually made even more progress in understanding what happened to me on the Paleo diet. I think I struggled not because the carbs were too low, but because I replaced the easy carb sources like grains and legumes with things like dairy (mostly cheese and yogurt) and fruit. Now I'm pretty confident that I have fructose malabsorption and sensitivity to casein in dairy. That would explain why I struggled so much on the Paleo diet. I found that out through an elimination diet. I also found out a couple of weeks ago that my vitamin D levels were very low and I started supplementing. That could have caused all of my symptoms as well. I also started the Paleo diet straight after a two-week trial of the 80/10/10 fruitarian diet, which I now suspect was the real reason for my crazy blood sugar. Paleo diet with all of the fruit and dairy that I was eating simply exacerbated the problem even more. At this point, I wouldn't blame the low carbs. It was probably all because of fruit, dairy, and the fact that I was eating too much protein instead of fat. I need to make another video now with the real reasons why the Paleo diet failed me. I feel like I finally have the answers. Hope you'll find the way to make your body happy. It's not easy, but try to listen to your body. I would also suggest doing an elimination diet. It's so helpful! Also a vitamin D test is so important as pretty much all of us are deficient. xx

VitaLivesFree Thanks for responding. I already got my (active!) Vit. D-level checked. It was in the lower end, but my doc said I shouldn't worry about it. Also, I started reading the "Magnesium miracle" by Dr. Dean and she says that it now turned out that it is advisable to stay at the LOWER end of range to avoid calcium overload (Vit. D increases calcium uptake, and as most ppl are already low in the so-urgently-needed magnesium, it only worsens the problem; since I don't really want to supplement with Mg, I just incorporated more Mg-rich foods to counteract calcium and stopped taking D a long while ago cos it may me feel really sick, I even had stay at home from work). I have a fructose problem, too. Pretty funny. Dairy products cause heavy constipation (maybe due to my low Mg, who knows). I don't like to eat more fat than max. 20 % of my calories as it slows my whole body down and I can't exercise as much as I'd like to. Fat decreases oxygen saturation in the body. I can figure that out by my skin becoming pretty pale (bad circulation). I will stick to starch I guess. Let's see what our bodies say longterm…...
@Vitalivesfree

Yes, only time will tell. Starch was making me feel reasonably good and I love it, but my blood sugar spikes up too much. I guess experimentation is really the only way to find answers. Good luck to both of us! xx

Same reasons I quit the paleo way of eating: cavities and gum problems, weird hair texture, bumpy skin but super dry, lack of energy, problems concentrating, etc. And on top of that my blood tests shown a deterioration in kidney function due to the large amount if animal protein, and I was perfectly healthy before and am young. And how many grams of carbs were you eating on average? Sorry for the questions, just trying to make sense it all. Just discovered that I don't tolerate casein in dairy, which could explain what happened to me on the Paleo diet. When I lowered the carbs, I tried to fill in the gaps with cheese and yogurt. Big mistake! Slowly but surely I'm moving towards a solution for this diet riddle. :-) xx
@fairywar
@fairywar 9 жыл бұрын
VitaLivesFree I was eating around 30-40grs of carbs per day. I do not tolerate well diary but somehow I have no issues with matured cheese. I am waiting for my blood test results and a food intolerance test, will let you know if I find out something :). I got really freaked out with the paleo diet when I started loosing hair (nothing had changed in my life, no stress or sickness). I thought that with all the protein and vit Bs from meats I would get the best hair, but after half a year it happened the opposite. All my meats were organic etc, but my body just cannot handle well animal protein. My body feels much lighter and more energised with a vegetarian diet including eggs and cheese, some cereal (rice that I soak and sprout to reduce the phytic acid and increase enzymes and mineral content), pseudo cereals (quinoa and buckwheat), nuts and seeds (soaked and dried as well), beans and legumes, plenty of vegetables and 2 pieces of fruit a day (only in the morning). I feel much better. As you said we are all different, our body responds differently so you need to adapt to that. Btw I am a fitness junky as well, which also helps keeping my health in check ;)
@Vitalivesfree
@Vitalivesfree 9 жыл бұрын
Your carbs were extremely low. That's probably what caused the hair loss. If you can handle mature cheese, you could be lactose intolerant. In my case, it seems that I'm casein intolerant instead. That's what I found out after a recent elimination diet. Also I discovered I have fructose intolerance and do best without fruit. Feel pretty awesome without gluten, dairy, and fruit. Let's see if my ability to eat fruit returns after my gut recovers from the casein abuse. I hope so! xx

I'm curious as to how much fat you were consuming on the diet. My understanding is there needs to be a high level of fat in the diet to make up for the depletion of calories. Lean high protein diets without getting calories from any other source will starve the body. Just some thoughts on the matter.
@Vitalivesfree
@Vitalivesfree 9 жыл бұрын
I was consuming about 60% of fat. But I tried to go both higher and lower with no success. I think my mistakes were too much protein (especially animal based) and carbs from the wrong source. Turns out I'm sensitive to fruit and A1 dairy. I do much better getting my carbs from legumes and gluten-free grains. Perhaps it wasn't so much the lack of carbs, but rather the wrong type of carbs. xx

+PC Henderson Yes, I did track everything and I know exactly what went wrong with the Paleo diet. Red meat is a big no-no for me, meat in general actually, while I thrive on fish. Paleo diet kind of worships red meat and liver, so of course I tied to incorporate those into my diet. Bad mistake! Another reason was no gluten free grains or legumes, which unfortunately also means quite little magnesium. Sadly, Paleo diet is quite low in magnesium, even the gurus accept it as a drawback. Another thing I've discovered since is blood types. I'm an A and eating the Paleo diet for me was madness. I thrive on my current diet with lots of vegetables, fruit, properly prepared gluten-free grains and legumes, fish, and lots of grass-fed raw dairy. It took me two years to repair the damage the Paleo diet has done to my body and to understand what exactly went wrong. but I'm glad to say I'm feeling amazing with my current diet. xx

+Florian Jaros That's exactly the opposite scenario of what actually happens to a lot of people on the Paleo diet. Just see the work of Matt Stone and the comments under his articles. White rice, quinoa, and potatoes aren't mainstream Paleo AT ALL: Some of the leaders, such as Chris Kresser or the Jaminets allow them, but the traditional leaders don't. Unfortunately, the majority of the people follow people like Mark Sisson, Rob Wolf or Cordain. The traditional strict Paleo is a tragedy waiting to happen! The diet that you think is Paleo with quinoa, white rice, and potatoes is nothing, but a simple whole foods diet and labelling it as Paleo is ridiculous. Thanks for your opinion! xx

+Sasha Nealand Grains and legumes every day, I eat lots of homemade sourdough bread, some kind of meat or fish once a day most days. Lots of vegetables, a moderate amount of fruit. Some dairy every day. Still nothing processed. I love my diet now and it makes me feel great. xx

Your body is going through withdrawals. I've been on Paleo for 2 months and the same happened to me. Our bodies are so used to carbs and sugars. These things are as addictive as cocaine so when we stop consuming these things your body is literally craving. Idk what this lady was going through with Paleo I've never heard anything like this. My dr her self says there's nothing wrong with Paleo. Although everyone's different!

I just started eating Paleo a couple of months ago, and I'm loving the results. however, I'm starting to wonder if this diet is something that I can sustain for a long time. I believe quinoa, steel cut oats and a few other things would make good additions into this lifestyle.

What were you eating? With my understanding paleo diet does include carbs and sugars as well, as long as they're not from grains, legumes and processed foods.....you were probably just eating protein and low carb veggies?
@Vitalivesfree
@Vitalivesfree 7 жыл бұрын
+Alex Gursky I had 100-150g of carbs which was at the top of Paleo ranges. I need grains and legumes because of the nutrients they contain, not only the carbs. I have my health back thanks to going back to my heritage, which is plenty of sourdough bread. xx

+VitaLivesFree AD1. could you share with us what did you actually eat? "Paleo" can mean pretty much anything nowadays. I know people who thing they eat paleo, and they eat almond flour bread daily, coconut oil and shit loads of sweeteners. AD2. did you try to go into ketosis in summer?
@Vitalivesfree
@Vitalivesfree 8 жыл бұрын
I ate the Primal diet as described by Mark Sisson most of the time. No almond flour, no sweeteners. I tried to go into ketosis in early autumn. xx
@danielfulop

+VitaLivesFree Primal diet contains milk products, paleo doesn't. And paleo is not calling for ketosis either. I have to agree on that the paleo myth is a joke, but I'm sure that it isn't eating real foods which messed you up. Not sure how long have you been eating the "paleo" way. I started eating paleo disregarding the carb intake (meaning I ate lots of honey for example, and sweet potatoes) but after a few months the improvement I expected didn't come... until I tried a ketogenic approach. I eat stuff like fish, wild meat, beef, eggs, along with some green vegetables and some cheese. I cook with duck fat or ghee. It's not the "classical paleo". I am not sure how low carb eating caused you so much trouble but I suspect it wasn't about the amount of carbs. Of course the first 2-3 weeks trying to get rid of sugar addiction is tough. If higher carbs work better for you, I believe that's fine, however it is a good thing to consider the connection between light, heat and nutrients. Meaning that we are not meant to be eating lot of carbs in cold weather. Also I wouldn't generally say that the lack of carbs is a problem because there are many-many of us who exercise without carbs. Bodybuilders, powerlifters, and we all do better on less than 30g carbs. Check out Ketogains group on facebook if you are interested.

It was the excess of meat, lack of carbs, and too much fat that caused all of the issues. I'm a blood type A and don't do well with a lot of things promoted on the Paleo diet. Right now I'm doing great eating a lot of carbs and grains. It just proves that we're all different and the wrong diet for your type can surely ruin your health even if it's touted to be 'healthy' by the gurus. xx

Hi Vita, You are right, no one type of diet is for everyone. I have been on the Paleo diet for about 9 months. I have lost 35 pounds without starving myself, although find I need more carbs to sustain energy for my workouts and just doing my daily responsibilities. I have just recently added more carbs like rice and sweet potatoes. I try to limit or avoid flour breads as I totally believe the oils used in them such as vegetable and Canola it causes me to get joint pain. The only time I experience constipation is when I didn't have enough vegetables with my meals. It's good you found out it is not the proper diet for you. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I did lchf diet for 6 months. I lost quite some weight but it messed my hormones a lot. I had the same experience as you did when it comes to monthly period. I decided to stop the diet and gained all the weight back and some more. I've been trying to lose but this time around it's very difficult. Thanks for sharing your story, hopefully somebody will be helped.

+2005SHERWIN I can totally relate. Every time you go on a diet, metabolism gets reduced, and instead of losing weight, so often people gain it all back and find it even harder to lose it in the future. Dieting definitely isn't the way. In my opinion, combating stress/cortisol and optimising digestion is the way to go. xx

+ellegates My carbs were never low enough to go into ketosis, so I don't think so. I only tried really low carbs for around a couple of weeks, but by then I was already feeling rubbish anyway, so I don't think that's what derailed the train. I've done more experimenting, reading, thinking and have decided that I failed for 3 reasons. 3. Because I ate red meat and it's a huge no-go for me. I do best with fish and occasional turkey or chicken. I also don't do well with liver and I was eating it regularly on the Paleo diet. I'm a blood type A. 2. Another reason was magnesium deficiency. Paleo diet is low in magnesium, plus higher fat and protein intake naturally uses up more magnesium. 3. The last reason I think was the Paleo philosophy of 80% compliance. I was probably 95% of the time compliant, but a couple of times a month I had some wheat and that's what caused me the biggest issues, I think. I have recently found out I have celiac disease and I always had low grade symptoms while I ate wheat all the time, but when I stopped eating it regularly and started eating it sporadically, my immune system went into an overdrive. So that's what happened to me in nutshell. I'll have to make an updated video soon. xx

+Kristina Ikic I looked into that, but I should have been getting a lot of zinc on the Paleo diet. I ate mussels and other seafood regularly, also red meat. It just seems like my body wasn't able to absorb it or it wasn't a zinc deficiency. Luckily, those spots are gone now! xx

I really appreciate you mentioning food needs based on the history of the people group you are a part of & how heritage can play a role in what your body may need. I am also curious about the claim of Paleolitic people not eating any grains & legumes. There are many people groups where legumes are very much a staple & have been for a very long time. As a person of West African & Cherokee Native American heritage, I do wonder if my diet needs may be different from people from predominantly European heritage. My skin & hair needs are very different. It wouldnt surprise me if my dietary needs are specific as well.

+Jacquie Van Horne Yes, your diet would be different due to the land. The abundance of meat, fruits and grains. Each region of the world had different types of foods in which they consumed along with their lifestyles. So all these diets are not for everyone. People have to find out which is best for them. One diet will not work for everyone for our genetic makeup is different. People have to experiment what is good for them.

+Jacquie Van Horne I saw a video by a Dr. Sebi who says the same thing about regional diets, perhaps you'd like to watch his video called "Why We Get Sick". I'm mixed too, Hispanic of mostly Spanish descent so I wonder about that, but these days I follow my instinct, I believe I've learned how to listen to my body. I recently changed to a vegan diet (first lacto-vegetarian for 5 weeks) and have not encountered any problems so far, I'm really enjoying the food and all the benefits I've been getting so far, like the loss of 15 lbs. after about 3 years when I could stand on my head and not lose an ounce and to the contrary, kept gaining to where I worried a lot about it because I'd broken twice my personal "highest" weight (by 10 lbs. each time).

+Jacquie Van Horne I know that with my heavy Norwegian/Saami heritage, cutting dairy would be a major no-no. I believe there is moderation for everything, but I could not cut a major food group.

Are you aware that Norway ranks 5th among the 50 countries with the highest overall cancer incidence? Dairy's been associated with quite a few types of cancer. There's no such thing as "moderation" when something threatens your life. Besides, dairy should NOT even be considered as a "food group", cow's milk is intended for the calves yet we steal it for profit. It's really absurd to be drinking the milk of another species altogether especially past infancy, milk's purpose is to make the baby grow faster and once a certain stage is past ALL babies get weaned, so it makes NO sense whatsoever for adult humans to be drinking cow's milk, as the slogan says "Not your mother, not your milk". Please go to www.notmilk.com and learn what the dairy industry will never tell you. Please be sure to click on IGF-1 and Pus. I was REALLY hooked on cheese until little over a month ago, even when I already knew it wasn't good for me (as it caused me to have chronic nasal congestion) I didn't want to give it up. Then I learned casein has addictive properties and I stopped all dairy that very day. I don't know about you but I do not like being addicted to anything, especially when I felt I was kind of tricked into it. Haven't missed it at all, to me it feels better to be in complete control of my body.

I enjoyed your explanations of what happened to you. One should never change their diet in such a drastic fashion. I personally believe that any food regiments that restrict foods is destined for failure. I was curious about this diet after seeing a segment on the boob tube. when the guest said no beans, including my favorite blackeye peas I said nope nope nope. Not gonna happen. the key is to be active and eat in moderation and not excess. if you can achieve that balance you'll be healthier for it.
