I'm glad you mentioned that getting a degree is a privilege. There are millions of people around the world including in South Africa, the country you're living in, who would do anything to have the opportunity and economic means/support from either their parents or financial institutions to study in a University and obtain a degree to provide a better life for themselves and their family. It's not about happiness or being personally fulfilled, it's about survival and economic security. I'm sure you understand that you're privileged in numerous aspects in society which affords you the position where you can make this decision without facing the same reprecussions other economically disadvantaged or marginalized people would face. I just hope you appreciate and acknowledge the fact that you have both the freedom and privilege to even make this decision. I wish you luck in your future endeavors in whatever you choose to pursue.

Hey!! I have a super similar story.. I finished high school in 2015 and then travelled around Europe for the summer and then returned to Australia to start university. I was just doing a generic media communication degree, and almost instantly I knew I had made the wrong choice. Because I didn't like it, I was unmotivated and didn't care at all, and so at the end of the first semester I decided to leave. Then I worked for 7 months and bought a one way ticket to Paris..and now it's been 6 months living here and I love my life SO much. It's amazing. I think within the next year I want to go back to university but I have learnt never to rush anything or do something that feels right because you will end up regretting it .... Xxxx thanks for sharing!

my 2 cents advice. if u hv invested lots of time and money and are half way through, the best is to just finish. Over the years I hv started many careers and find i couldnt complete bcoz of some other reason bordering on "satisfaction". I have learnt now that for such people the best is just to master the art of finishing and just complete whatever it is u r doing. Even if u make a mistake that thing u did will lead you to your next destination. No time is wasted time.

I literally came from the same situation and feel exactly the same about my course. I'm from the UK and moved to Malta last year and did a year long voluntary scheme...when I decided I wanted to stay in Malta I applied for a masters at the university. Nine months down the line I'm still asking myself the same questions and realised it is just for the piece of paper you get at the end. Finishing this semester then taking the summer to decide if it is worth continuing with the dissertation. Good luck with the next adventure!

Proud of you that you dare to share this online, must not have been easy! Take your time to find what your thing is, whatever it may be. Everybody is different and has a different life so nobody can judge you, remember that! I'm actually the total opposite of you : I've known since I was 5years old that I wanted to become a psychologist (I couldn't speak this word properly but I explained to my mum what I wanted to do) and it never changed. Unfortunately during health circumstances I haven't been able to start uni yet while normally I'd already have my masters degree.. I'm still hoping that I can become a psychologist and in the mean time we'll see.. nobody can know what will happen in their life. What I've learnt from my health issues is that you've gotta do what you want! So you, and everyone else, do you! We will all get there eventually :) Keep going with your beautiful photos on Instagram and interesting blogposts/videos about the way you see life. You're a true inspiration ♥️♥️♥️ xox Lyn

I really enjoyed watching this video since I love listening to different perspectives. If your WHY isn't strong enough, then it will be hard to pursue whatever it is you are trying to pursue. My WHY are my parents and grandparents that worked so hard their whole entire lives since they never had the opportunity to have an education. It's a sacrifice when you are working for your degree but my family is my WHY and I just want to give back to them. I hope to receive my bachelors in Psychology one day.

I feel the same way, but I still don't have the courage to disappoint my parents. I am in my 3rd year of University now, with one year left. This past 2 year has been a struggle for me and I have no motivation at all to continue to study to just pass my next exam. I'm at a point where I rather fail and get kicked out of university than telling my parents the truth that I just want to quit. I have zero working experience, and the financial support of my parents is what scares me the most. I was "forced" by my family and society to think that after finishing high school I MUST go to University and get a piece of paper that will "guarantee" my success in the future. I am lost, I am really trying to figure it out what I want to do when I quit Uni. I am scared of not having my family's support any longer, and like you said, University is super expensive and the only requirement for my parents is that I finish it. I've been lying to them for the past 2 years whenever they ask me if I am doing well in school. Reality is, I am not...

Hi Jolie. I’m also studying for a Degree in the university. I also have the same circumstances and I’m so struggling now. I’ve been thinking of quitting the school or transferring to other courses because I don’t really enjoy. I don’t know if my choice would be the right one or I would regret if I quit. I know what kind of life I desire and I know I’m currently out of the track but I don’t know if I continue studying the course in the school,it may brings me some changes or something I wouldn’t have been expected that I would gain. I would like to hear some opinions from you. Sincerely,SP.

In my opinion, university was the best decision I ever made. I discovered a totally new way of thinking and opened my mind to so much that I could never have anticipated. Sure, I didn't get to go to the beach or eat out a lot because I had to budget and do assignments, but honestly, I feel like uni made me awaken my calling. Sometimes it was hard, and boring, and I felt like I was doing the wrong thing, but I stuck it out. Having said that, I went to one of the best universities in the UK and I know that the South African education system leaves a lot to be desired in many respects.. :) Did you consider just changing courses to something with more interlinked subjects? Like maybe doing English language and literature? Also, is Julia still attending UCT? Hope you don't mind all the questions, I'm just curious! Good luck with whatever you do now! xo

Hello Janine, I am so glad to see this video because I was having the same feelings. I have always worked hard in school and get really good grades, and it has always been my dream to study in a top university in the U.S. I am now on my gap year mainly because I didn't get in the school I wanted to attend and decided to reapply this year and travel at the same time. However, I am begging to think that maybe university isn't the right thing for me now. I still want to attend a university, but I'm not sure if now is the right time. It's quit ironic because I've always wanted a PHD and hoped to become a professor one day. I am so proud of you for making this decision and posting this video! I hope you the best! p.s. I'm worried what my parents would react to my thoughts. It would be great if you can share how your family reacted to your decision. :)

its no big deal dropping out, just try to find what you really like and try to align it with your talent. For example if you are top rate at maths try some type of engineering or science course. If english is your best subject do a course that fits, marketing, law social work, teaching and so on. there are many options. good luck. Or, you are young ,travel some more then later do uni. by the way dont do a degree for the money . You must enjoy , the money will come.
