I had a similar story. After becoming sick like you in Varanasi, I was trying desperately to leave, but India wasn't gonna let me go. Once I resigned myself to the fact that I had to stay in India until the date on my plane ticket the country opened to me and forever became a part of who I am. India's touched so many people including myself. Like others I started out with a short one-off trip, which turned into multiple trips which is resulted in long stays. I haven't been back since ninety-seven but have always committed to returning.

I am from the Indian state of Bihar, currently living in Alberta, Canada. One odd day a friend of mine who is a caucasian asked me about "Upnishada." I didn't expect a white Saxon male would ask me where can he find this ancient Hindu book. The same evening I had to go to the bookstore to buy some of the books, and I decided to look for the English version of "Upanishads." I was surprised to find it there, and I didn't have to spend much of my time looking for it. The next morning I saw him in the college, and I gifted him this book. He wanted to pay me for the book, and I politely refused, stating, 'in my culture, we gift books, don't sell them. He recently lost his mother and had a hard time concentrating on things. He said this book helped him learn more about meditation, spirituality and how to control his mind.

Dear friend,I am also from Bihar,I just wanted to correct something, and that is you can not Control your Mind, because how it works depends on how you give instruction to it. There is something listening to Mind and at the same time directing your Mind to the true path,, You can learn it from "The Geeta" and "Mahabharta",if have some disbelieve.Well,it is better to learn than "to Believe" too.

It's a shame that this wholesome, spiritual act is now considered 'cultural appropriation'. I think that old man from the hotel would really shed a tear to know just how seriously you took his prayers and good wishes. Not just carrying Shiva with you, but doing this as well. It speaks volumes to your good character.

I'm a white American Hindu, I don't care if someone claims I'm "culturally appropriating". I believe in this way of life, the beliefs of the spiritual masters match my own personal beliefs. If they want to be technical, then Christians are also culturally appropriating since Christianity is a Middle Eastern religion adopted by white people.

I watched this video a long time ago but have come back to share a little bit about my experience with Hinduism and with Lord Shiva especially. I have been depressed for more than half my life because of important people in my life passing away and for years all I would do was smoke marijuana and try to ignore the anxious feelings. For a time it worked because I would numb my thoughts yet after a while, I had no idea that the depression would get worse after years of ignoring it and not trying to do something about it. Around 10 years into the depression and anxiety I had hit the worst part of my life and in that time Shiva came to me and I would out of seemingly nowhere chant Om Nam Shiva in my head. At the time I did not know the exact words nor did I try to research it because I was only at the start of opening my mind. Time goes on and I began to become more and more interested in Hinduism and the Gods and Deities that rule the universe. I started to do research and bought books, discovered Ganesh and Krishna and Hanuman as well. I started meditating and felt much better about myself. After some time I decided to devote my life to Hinduism, even if I wasn't as devout as some followers I still pray every day and try to be mindful of what I do. At the start, my parents were weary and would say "Why don't you follow your own religion?" because I was apparently raised as a Protestant but I never felt like a Christian although I do respect other religions, I just felt that Hinduism spoke to me more. Over time I started to buy some things to help me become a devotee so that I can feel like I am doing it the correct way. I bought rudraksha seeds and small statues and mala beads and enough incense to last at least 5 years. Although I still feel like I am not doing enough to be mindful of my anxiety and to give back to Lord Shiva, I do feel like I am on the right path. Watching this video again reminds me of why Lord Shiva came to me in my time of need. You do not need to devote your life to Lord Shiva to receive help from him but I feel like it was the right thing for me to do. I know my paragraphs are all over the place but I haven't been in school for a while so I forget how to write correctly. Thank you if you read this whole thing and Ohm Namah Shivaya, Hare Krishna, and Namaste. Have a great day and don't forget to help someone if they seem like they need it.

Oh! Man just watched your video I was watching Harald’s video and suddenly I came to your video...,, but I really feel something inside me, I’m Indian living in Toronto I almost forgot my religious values and faith, but now I realize that money is not everything I realized my mistake and I will going to start worshipping again. Because we all know that there is power that is holding this world together and giving us hope. You found a way in the form of shiva’s picture, religion doesn’t matter because it’s made by humans, what matters is the feelings that come from your heart. Lots of ❤️ from Canada hope you go to India more often and discover more. Luv U

absolutely correct. sanatan is a way of life. a way to seek. just like europe has a way of life. a pattern to live life. a culture. sanatan is not a faith, not a religion. may be there are many small religions within sanatan. but as a whole together they make it a way of life of this land. and there is no coercion to practise any particular way. that is the beauty of sanantan. what the Europeans have realised after their french revolution, indians have realised it thousands of years ago. that is the reason sanantan culture is still alive .

@Storm D Well every other religion identify themselves as a religion and that this is the only way to follow. However the concept of religion is completely alien to Hinduism. In Hinduism gods are a personification of nature. The word hindu itself was given by foreigners. It was originally giver to the people who resided in the Indian subcontinent as a geographical identification, as I said by foreigners( foreign invaders would be more appropriate). Also one more thing you must note is there is no way to convert to Hinduism. However, its different, where in other religions there is. You don't have to go to any temple. You don't have to worship anyone or anything and still you can be a hindu. On the other hand you can worship everything and anything if you wish. The sole basis of Hinduism is one must follow his or her dharma and your karma is the result of your actions and you reap what you sow. As a Christian you have go to the church every Sunday, as a Muslim you have to read namaz every Saturday and go to the mosque or god won't forgive you, they say. No one says any such thing in Hinduism. P S: Buddhism, sikkhism and jainism are also a part of Hinduism so everything i said above applies to them as well.
@abhaynatoo
@abhaynatoo 3 жыл бұрын
@@iagreewithyou4328 .YU SAID IT PERFECTLY AGAIN. nothing more to add. just that the word hindu is a corruption of the word sindhu. Arabs have difficulty to say sa word. so they substituted ha for sa. and all land east of the river was called sindh or sindhu land. and all people residing in it were called as sindhus by arabs. but only they uttered it as hindu land and hindu people and hindu religion. in ancient and mediveal times arabs were the primary means through which thought and goods from the east and orient percolated to europe. and so they introduced bharat as hindustan to europe. when the word hindu reached romans , they further corrupted it or rather latinised it [ every language corrupts words from other languages, not just latin] to inde. and when inde reached the english it became india. so from sindhu ---> hindu-->inde--> india. all are incorrect becoz all in reality refer only to a small part of bharat that is called as sindhustan or sindh which is only a province of bharat, not bharat itself.

33 yrs ago i set out to my own trip to india. I went overland, thru -then- yugoslavia, bulgaria and turkey. Mostly by hitchiking, even caught a lift from trabzon to tehran. In pakistan i started to get diahrrea, and it stayed with me all thru my 4 months in pak and india. I was in kashmir and ladakh, himachel pradesh, delhi and bombay. But it was in goa that i got really sick, ended up in hospital. I lost 20 kg in weight, about 3 stone. I was yellow, caught hepatitis. I decided to go back to bombay, got a boat from panjim. An indian man, ahmed, put me up in bombay and helped me get a ticket home. Without him i don't know if i wud have survived. I really want to go back to india myself, when my daughter is grown up. Hope to go back someday, and would love to do a motorcycle tour of the northern mountainous regions, the Hill Stations etc... Stunning scenery, lots of historric sites. The place my family used to visit was called Haridwar, not sure if you know it.... quite popular as a pilgrimage to the Hindu gods I think. My mum and her mum would both semi-bathe in the Ganges there, it has some sort of religious significance. OK, enough of my long comments for today haha

Hi Ben, Wonderful story. I have a similar story from 1985. I was just a young guy of 22 and had bought a standby ticket from Alaska to London thinking I might travel around Europe for a few months. Shortly after landing in London I met a guy that had recently returned from India and I was fascinated so I bought a ticket leaving in a couple weeks and got my Indian visa and I was off to Delhi. I did the fairly typical Delhi, Agra, Fatepur Sikri, Jaipur, Ajmer then to Pushkar where things went off the rails. I had eaten something bad so by the time I go to Jodphur I wasn't doing so well. I managed to walk around for a couple of days seeing the sights and exploring the beautiful Blue City while visiting many toilets. My mind isn't real clear but I know there came a point that I wasn't leaving my little concrete hotel room and was just crapping blood on the floor. I was a bit delirious as one night couldn't even open a bottle of soda. The old guy that ran the place knocked on my door one day and asked if I was ok. He knew I wasn't as he looked at the spots on the floor. He went and grabbed a little match box and told me the next time I was able to make anything come out my backend to do it in the match box which I did. He took it to the chemist and brought me back some medicine and after 3 days I was finally able to eat again. To make a long story short I said my goodbyes and moved along to Udaiphur. I had lost about 40 lbs on this part of the adventure. I've always wanted to go back to see the guy and thank him properly. I'm sure he is gone now. But I'd love to visit his family to tell them that their Grandpa saved my life. I've google mapped it and found the hotel I'm not sure if it's the same ownership. I hope to visit them someday. I've never been back to India but have travelled all over Asia in the past (almost) 40 years. That trip was 1 month in England, 4 1/2 months India, 1 month Nepal and 1 month in Thailand. I can't travel so long these days but that was my most epic trip.

Went to goa 10 years ago and gotta say what lovely people still remember my taxi driver we had for the entire 3 weeks (pandu) played cricket with the locals and when one of the hotel cleaners lost her husband in accident I made a donation box for guests and raised nearly 10,000 rupees which was a lot back then I just loved the place I came home empty handed the people are so sweet you literally give them the clothes off your back I'm sure I'm not the only one

I have tears in my eyes, *Oh my beloved Indus River, the divine water which sustained my ancestors, I cry for you day and night, I remember you with every breath, my beloved river, my beloved water, I dream of becoming one with you when my burning ashes will be mixed in you* - Indian from the southern part.
@hpguy99
@hpguy99 4 жыл бұрын
The Indus River never "sustained" the southern part of India. You 'cry everyday' and spend every waking moment thinking about "your river"? Even if Pakistan had never existed, the Indus River was always a part of Punjab, and conversely, the Northwest of India. I don't understand the point of your melodramatic and nonsensical poem. I'm surprised this has so many likes, it seems like a really bad troll attempt.

@@hpguy99 You realise that southern indians migrated from the indus valley to the south after the migration of the indo-aryans right? That's why the RG veda has dravidian loan words, and why the brahui dialect still exists in pakistan

@@hpguy99 that's the difference between Indians and Pakistanis. You know right before 1947 we were one country? And that in indus valley civilisation we were one big region?
@1996warman
@1996warman 4 жыл бұрын
@@hpguy99 1) Indus Valley Civilization is the root of Indian civilization. People who lived there moved across India after its fall. 2) Sindhu river is mentioned a lot in Rig Veda, the oldest scripture for Hindus. Sindhu river is mentioned in lot of mantras too. Rivers, in general, are considered holy for Hindus. River banks are the ideal place to recite prayers and conduct ceremony. Funeral rites too take place by the river. While the Ganga is the most holy river, Sindhu comes next, along with Godavari, Yamuna etc. 3) The symbolic value of Indus as the border of Hindu lands. Hindu lands have always been defined as east of Indus to west of Brahmaputra, south of Himalayas. These 3 were the natural borders of ancient India. I hope this makes you understand why Hindus consider River Sindhu/Indus in high regard.

I have to say, I’m completely impressed. I just started following, since I follow a lot of travel channels, and especially channels where folks go to India (never have been, but I feel a strong connection with it), and your channel kept coming up in video comments or KZbin recommendations. I thought you were probably just a bit of a smartass bloke, showing interesting bits about India, and then this one came up as a suggestion. I’m blown away at the motivation you have for returning and your dedication in doing so. I’m going to view your videos via a new mental lens. Thank you for sharing this story. 🙏🏼👍🏼✌🏼
