Time to answer one of those questions I keep getting asked...
Why do I ride a recumbent trike?
A ride along the canal local to my home while I discuss the pro's of riding my HP Velotechnik Scorpion FS26 recumbent trike.

Enjoyed your video and the comments. I am 86 years young and started riding a recumbent trike last May. My balance is not great, but on the trike that is no problem. We live near our metro airport and I very much enjoy looking up at the approaching aircraft and also the ability to just stop and chat with people. I have put about 800 miles on the trike in the last 6 months and enjoyed every moment of it.

I totally agree. I broke my back 12 years ago and then blew out 8 disks. The pain is 7-9/10 with minor meds because I won't do what the pain specialist recommends, which is extended release morphine or fentanyl. I was a prisoner in my own body. Then I tried a trike. IT DIDN'T HURT!!! I have a get out of jail card with my trike. I'm like a kid flying down the street and getting exercise I desperately need. I am losing the weight I put on by not being able to walk more than 20 feet. All of that and **** F U N!**** At 64, I am alive again. With no chance to move and just aging, I had some terribly dark thoughts. Now, those are history and I have a future to look forward to.

Totally agree! I laughed at the spilled popcorn 🍿 🤣. I am from the United States, Arizona. I ride a Catrike Expedition recumbent trike. I enjoy long-term touring, but do to work, I don't get much long-term touring. Recumbent trikes are great, perhaps not for the upright bicycle snobs but they don't know what they're missing. They are much more fun! Enjoy your channel.

Bone spurs and arthritis took me off of diamond frame (AKA regular bicycles) bikes. I learned to ride a bike when I was in grade school. I rode some in college and later when I was teaching. I had both a hybrid bike and a road bike until medical issues came up. It became too painful to ride a bike. Fast forward about three years before I retired when I attended a "Seniors Exhibition" at the local convention center. There was a Terra Trike dealer there with three or four trikes on display. Out of curiosity I got on one and rode it around the periphery of the exhibition. I largely forgot about the experience until retirement and then I remembered. The only dealer was 25 miles away so I went over one day to look. Just so happens the owner was out of town and the mechanic and office person were the only ones there. It was a slow day so the mechanic took a trike, put me on another and off we went around the adjoining neighborhoods just riding and chatting for a couple of hours. I eventually settled on a Terra Trike Rambler GT (26" rear, 20" front). It's been a grand adventure and I'm now on a Catrike Dumont. I've pedaled over 7K miles. I absolutely love riding. In conclusion, riding a bike requires constant attention to where your going and what's in front of you so that you don't go down...crash. You barely see anything or enjoy anything around you. On the trike I was now lower and going slower, still able to look ahead but able to see the surroundings. Like Tim said you talk to people and you answer questions. The ability to totally enjoy your surroundings is there. It opened up a whole new world for me and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Oh, and yes, I tell folks it's "butt friendly"...

Fantastic comment Hal. I sometimes forget how little I got to enjoy the outside when riding an upwrong. Now my concentration can be fully on my surroundings and generally enjoying the world around me.

Great job Sir. I purchased my very first recumbent trike a few weeks ago and it needed a complete overhaul (it was used and poorly maintained) ‘I ended up replacing the rear 20-inch wheel with a 26-inch tire that I took from a mountain bike I had lying around. I used parts from a bed (steel carriage) seats from an old weight bench (cut and trimmed), steel from a damaged water heater, and crutches. All these parts helped me rebuild the bike into something useful and I’m riding it now for my health and of course for fun. So far I’ve spend about $330 US dollars total!

Hi Tim, your videos are getting even better! I can only agree on your reasons for adding a wheel. Been riding an Ice Trike for a couple of months now. Mainly used for commuting. (I'm cheating though, I've turned it into an e-trike. Reason long distance to work 40 km single trip. Trying to keep support level as low as possible....) Coming from a normal bike it took me quite a while getting used to different workout. However if I now jump on a normal bike it is like it's not moving at all....Keep the videos coming. Have fun in Morocco!

The price of recumbent trikes is astronomical (to me anyway), but i'm lucky enough to possess a welder and a creative mind (not to mention a pile of salvaged bicycle parts). Watching a video of a trike convention i noticed one (fluorescent orange and green) with front independent suspension as well as rear. Just a couple of A-arms and a coilover shock per side. Guy was riding it down a short flight of stairs, hard, without damage. Since i am pushing 350 lbs (158.7 kg) i think it would be prudent to have front suspension...lol. I keep putting off the build (life getting in the way), but now my doctor says i have piss-poor circulation in my legs (bad valves) and need exercise. But with a large raw wound on my right ankle he also says i should keep my legs elevated all day to improve circulation and thus healing. So i'd better get to it. Winter approaching in the Midwest US so i'd better add a Velo body too. Well, out comes the 1/4" XPS foam and epoxy fiberglass...lol.

Have owned a Catrike 700 for 5 years Outdoors, I ride in a park that has a 1.2 mile paved 2 lane road loop that is restricted access to cars. Riding a 26 mile workout, I get it done in about 1.5-1.75 hours at a constant space. I also ride it on a roller in my living room using a roller and do two 30 minutes a day for cardio and muscle toning. Why I like it? I can ride 26 miles non stop without stopping with my back comfortably supported. It focuses the exercise on legs and butt for good toning. It’s next to impossible to wreck given the 3 wheels and low center of gravity. Things that are less desirable, It takes some creativity if you want to transport it to ride. I bought a special trike carrier for my car and that is a pain. I am now going to use 3 aluminum c channels on a roof rack which is much better to take it places.

Nice video Tim. I would actually add a couple little things onto the list. First, I feel completely comfortable riding a trike on trails without a helmet whereas I would never ride a two wheel bike without one. Second, A person really doesn't realize how much concentration and focus is spent on balancing a two wheel bike and guiding the front wheel away from potholes and ruts in the road until you don't need to do it anymore.

In fact trikes make tours a more intense and vivid experiences than in normal bikes, and give us a better way to contemplate Nature ans his beauty, receiving their gifts in a more opened attitude towards the world. Also not to worry whith balance, make us more able to pay attencion to other things.

@TimsTrikeTrips

No. My preference was for full suspension for increased comfort but I didn't "need" it. Bigger tyres would also offer a little comfort without any suspension. Many trikes have only rear suspension and some have no suspension at all. It's all down to personal preferences.

Hi. I can only advise you about the trike that I ride because its the first one I have ever owned. I take "Trinny" off road all the time and its very comfortable too. Make sure you look for front and rear suspension. You wont go far wrong with an HP trike but you'd be better off asking an expert in store if you can. Hi Tim. I enjoy watching your video. I’m not a trike rider or a recumbent bike rider but I’m seriously looking at it. I have been looking up on the net and here. So next up are questions/advice. Is there any particular reason you ride the HP, a German made as opposed to the Ice which is an English made. Reason for asking; I am Irish, I would always try support local and then my nearest neighbor as long as it was of standard. I know there are other brands I have also looked at. Recumbent Bike or Recumbent Trike? Why one over the other apart from the obvious. Direct Steering or Indirect Steering? Again I have read about this but would like your opinion/views Gears, so much to ask on this subject; how many gears does one need taken into consideration I’d be knew to this. I’d be unfit when it comes to cycling (I play badminton 5 nights a week). Twist shift or the other one (can’t think what they call it but it’s on top of the handle and you just push them I think. Then there’s the pinion (I think that’s how you spell it) automatic. Or Electric. The question is have on the electric is if I ran out of power is the battery adding much and make it to difficult to return home or would I have to call out the AA. If there is any of those questions you don’t want to answers that ok. Thank you Regards Kevin.
@TimsTrikeTrips
@TimsTrikeTrips 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, thanks for your comment and questions. I'll do my best to try and answer them... The reason I ride an HPV Scorpion is that at the time I bought her the Scorpion was the head & shoulders above any other trikes that were availble for me to test ride in just about every way I could wish for. To date I still haven't had the opportunity to ride an ICE Trike so cant comment about them other than to say that I have never heard anything but good reports about their quality. I would definitely look at ICE if I needed to replace my trike in the future. I ride a trike mainly because of a disability in my right leg which can cause me problems with pedalling and with balance when stopping if on two wheels. Also its very much easier to use a camera and take a look around when you dont have to also worry about falling over. :-) I cant really comment about the steering as I have never tried indirect steering so have nothing to compare against sorry. On gears and gearing, as you say there is so much on the subject... If you're playing badminton 5 nights a week then your general fitness level must be pretty good already. A short time getting your "recumbent legs" (usually your first 400 to 500km) and you'll be sorted. I cant honestly tell you what gears you'll need without knowing distances and terrain etc that you intend to ride but a good recumbent dealer will help you far more with that subject in any case. Twist shift or Bar end shifters...? I think thats purely down to personal preference. I dont see taht one has advantages over another. Its just what you get used to. On electric assist, I have a new video coming out very soon (July 2019) as this is something I am now considering. I'll let you watch that and if you have more questions about it after then ask away. Anyway, I hope some of that helps? If you want to ask more then fire away... You can always make contact by email via the contact form on my website www.timstriketrips.com if thats easier too.

Tims Trike Trips Hi Tim. Again thank you for your reply. I was thinking it was. A gentleman as always. I’m nearly there with a decision and I think it going to be down to an ICE or AZUB. I just have to decide on if I really need suspension and if I do do I only need rear or do I need front and rear. I never thought it would be as difficult as this when I first started looking. Speak again.

I’m very interested and seriously considering taking up triking. I am very interested in the ICE adventure , possibly HD model and possibly, an electric assist. As someone whose videos I’ve watched and enjoyed and whose experience and knowledge I respect. What are your opinions or views
@TimsTrikeTrips
@TimsTrikeTrips 5 жыл бұрын
Neil, I can't advise you on the ICE trike directly as I have never ridden one myself. However on getting yourself into trikes then go for it. I doubt you'll regret it. If possible try out several different makes and models before you make a purchase. It is vital that you get the right trike for you. They are an expensive bit of kit and making the right choice is not something that should be rushed. A good dealer will let you ride different trikes and help you choose the spec that suits your purpose the best. As for electric assist... absolutely! Go for it if you feel it would add to your enjoyment. In a recent video I also spoke about how I will also go electric when I feel that my legs are starting to restrict the enjoyment I get from being outdoors. Thanks for watching and for your kind comment. If I can help further then please just ask.

Enjoy your holiday. You might need to protect your ears from the sun with a wider brimmed hat. On another note I'm curious as to what brand the front crank and sprocket is on the trike? Is it a Schlumph drive if not what brand is it? Is it paired with a Rohloff? and how do you find that they work. speed weight etc. Another video on bike tech

I'm still hoping for a Chinese company to flood the market with cheaper 'bents so we can all afford them, too expensive, so needs must - time to build my own. At 58 I'm not getting any younger and don't want to lose my independence of getting about. So before resigning cycling to the shed I want to have some mileage and a 'bent is the way to go. Living in the Pennines means it has to be assist at least; luckily i have 4 bikes to hack to bits to make one and some brazing knowledge. (I also have 3 old B & D drills to make an engine from for the Electric bit). good video though.

I've been toying with the idea of a recumbent trike for some time myself. It's the on road visibility that holds me back from taking the plunge. What's your experience when on road with your trike?
@TimsTrikeTrips
@TimsTrikeTrips 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter and thanks for the question. There are two sides to visibility. The first: can I see where I'm going, and the second: can others see me. as you probably know already I live (and ride) in London and have some of the busiest roads in the UK to negotiate. I have to say that I don't like riding in traffic, on two wheels or three. I avoid it wherever I can and will go out of my way to find cycle paths and quieter routes when I can. In very heavy traffic, I have to say, I don't like being low down on the Trike. By very heavy, picture standing traffic where I'm boxed in and perhaps cannot see around me in either or maybe both directions. It doesn't happen very often but when it does I feel very vulnerable. Outside of that situation things only get better and better as the traffic gets less and less. My visibility of others around me is enhanced by having the ability and time to look around me at all times without having to worry about balancing on two wheels or looking out for obstacles like potholes (which don't really effect riding a trike). What I mean is... I can concentrate more on others around me and less on my actual riding. On others visibility of me, I have never found this to be an issue. A recumbent trike on the UK roads is such an unusual sight that I find most UK drivers will either give me three times more room than they actually need to or they will wait patiently behind me until its safe for them to pass. I have yet to EVER be honked at by anyone out of irritation... only happiness and thumbs up. And that is really saying something for London drivers who are usually really uptight and in such a rush Sorry... I've gone on a bit long. Perhaps I'll chat about this in a video sometime. It is something I get asked a lot about when out and about too.

@@TimsTrikeTrips Thanks Tim. I too live in London, but have never seen a recumbent trike on the road. Even when you watch the adverts for recumbent trikes they NEVER show them in typical traffic situations. The flag(s) on a long pole would be a minimum requirement when in traffic if I ever do take the plunge and buy one. They're not cheap and I don't want to spend upwards of £2,500 to get flattened or lose confidence and never use it. Thanks for your response.
@TimsTrikeTrips
@TimsTrikeTrips 5 жыл бұрын
They do the same with car adverts too. Always driving that brand new 4x4 up a mountainside and fording the obligatory river at speed. Never real life like sitting at a stand still somewhere between Junctions on the M25 with kids screaming in the back ha ha. If you really want a trike then get one. I've ridden around Piccadilly Circus and up Oxford Street on mine (and have the video on here to prove it). I can just as easily do miles and miles around London without going anywhere near traffic. You'll only get that confidence when you're actually out there doing it.

Nice video on the "why" I do have one question though. Who the heck bought an old Life boat painted it blue and parked it on the canal? LOL. I mean what the heck do they use it for? and floating camper or something like that? I worked for Schat-Harding many years ago out of the Louisiana office in the USA. We had hunters there asking all the time to buy old lifeboats to make duck blinds out of them. I found that interesting to day the least.

I am not well off and infact vary poor . My girlfriend is doing all right but she's not rich or even average just a little below . I get my disability and she's a private school teacher . We bought a old house and live in it . It's a little over halfway paid for and with luck we will die in it . I used to ride bikes before I enlisted into the Navy . A short time latter I was discharge because of three things failing a test twice and then starting to have problems with my hip . This sort of messed up my life along with other things that added up over time . GOD if you really knew . I would say that my life was bad that caused self destruction . So now I am off the point . I found a trike for my girlfriend . A older KMX that is vary clean . I bought it for her and she loves it . I got a good deal for it . If it was not for the peice I or we could not afford it . I got it for $300.00 . I know what some of you are thinking that why I would want another or one for my self . Well I am disabled and it is vary hard on me to get down that low . I did it twice and each time I had to have help getting in and out of it . Not a good sight to see . So I asked the VA to get me one that I can get into . The VA told me what loops I have to go threw . They have to approved by my care giver or one of my doctors . Well after a year and having PTSD to the point of being high risk of suicide they are going to try to get me a recumbent . They seen my past medical records from attempts and an evaluation from the VA . The VA got me into some programs like O/T and R/T and if I improve they may want me to volunteer to work in the VA . I hope so . I hope that I can do it . But still I may never recover totally . One more break down will do me in . I know that I wont be able to handle it any longer . It will be it for me . I just want to be happy and calm with no worries .
