Why I Shoot JPEG + VSCO Editing - A Photography Tutorial

Who else shoot primarily JPEG? I don't know if this will stay a norm for me forever, but it fits the way I shoot and share photos at the moment. 📷

I also shoot both, because if I fail the exposition I will recover the picture in Lightroom.

CamCrunch I do. Paying clients love it. Tell their friends and I shoot them jpeg too. I guess I’m a snake oil salesmen. My friends shoot RAW but I get more media business collaborations.

If you know what you are doing, JPEG is just fine. I like shooting JPEG because I like to spend more time shooting ( photos, of course) than editing.

I think it comes down to quality vs quantity. If you shoot in jpeg than the editing does become easier and you're able to put out more content. If you shoot raw, the editing is more tedious but better quality. Nowadays, I do have to say quantity overcomes quality. On Instagram, the more photos you post the more followers you'll get. Quality, now, only matters when it comes down to printing. The best solution, like you said, just shoot in jpeg + raw. Good video!

vsco is nice, but it downgrades the image quality tremendously when exporting.

sd cards are pretty cheap so i shoot raw+jpg for safety

Nice video. In the past I've shot in RAW and wifi'ed an image to my iPhone and then edited with whatever software. My understanding is that soon as I've chosen to export the RAW image, it would by default be exported as a JPEG. In this case, what would be the difference between exporting a JPEG as apposed to exporting a RAW file as a JPEG? Thanks!

George Georgopoulos Thanks! I believe you asked this on FB as well and I'm not sure which you'll see first so I'll paste my reply here! Thats true. The reason why I switched to Raw + JPEG is because I noticed that the Camera Connect app from Canon doesn't transfer full sized JPEGS when you transfer from Raw. This might not be the case anymore, and other camera brands might have their photo transfer system set up differently as well. This is just something I've noticed in the past.

This was exactly my question. I agree - I took a RAW image today and uploaded to Facebook and Instagram. It looks fine on a phone but a bit blocky what you view on a larger screen like a PC or an iPad. Therefore I’m concluding that the camera connect gives you a pretty low res jpg from a raw file. Will try raw + Large jpeg from now on.
