For many people, the pandemic was a real "eye opener" from a fitness perspective. A lot of us were surprised to learn just how little we actually need to get a great workout at home in limited space. The TG is a big part of that due to its versatility and small foot print. No need to justify to anybody what you use. Use whatever works and is enjoyable enough to keep you consistent.

I stand by resistance bands all the way. Dumbbells are good, but lots of folks sleep on resistance bands. I bought a cheap set of them from Walmart of all places and omg I love them soo much. You can adjust the resistance by subtracting the slack of the bands. Yes they will degrade over time, but by the time they do, you have already gotten the use out of them so it’s okay. I like how portable they are anyways

@@86twin That was the main problem. Everybody was looking for a way to stay in shape while under lock down. I don't have a big enough area in my house to dedicate to bulky gym equipment. So, I reluctantly bought a Total Gym. As I used it, I gradually added more items to supplement it. Within a few months, I was able to get just as good a workout at home as I get at the gym. If the pandemic hadn't occurred, I'd still be laughing at the idea of using a TG and resistance bands to get an effective workout.

@@stevelufc64you can lift free weights at your age if not lifting really heavy. They say you can lift really heavy resistanxe with resistance bands more a less forever because its less stress on the joints . But that's not the case with free weights. That's why most people in their 50s upwards or even their 40s might lift lighter weight but with higher reps.

I stopped while I was injured but now I use weights for some exercises and bands for others. The most impressive thing is that I didn't lose strength on bands. Meaning I went back to weights, I was able to use my old poundages. I'll add that using bands taught me to relearn how to feel the muscle too.

I agree with you, Mike. You have to listen to your body depending on your stage in life. I suffered from painful hips and clicking joints after years of martial arts, jogging, and free weights. Around 13 years ago when i was around 35, I stopped the exercise routine what was causing me pain and transitioned to the Total Gym, cycling, and walking min 10000 steps per day. I feel great and that's why i love this channel! Mike teaches various creative ways to stay in great shape. 🙂👍

Hi, Sliding Bench Trainer, I'm finding out that traditional gyms aren't needed, there are alternative methods that are just as effective, and you don't have to wait around to use the equipment or pay expense fees. You can go to the public park and use pull-up bars, dipping bars, and other various pieces of outside equipment without all the waiting around you get in gyms or bring your own equipment like a TRX or resistance bands or a heavy rope to train with. There are many methods and can enjoy the exercise activities. The problem is the weather isn't always pleasant so that's where home equipment comes in like a TRX or resistance bands or a Total Gym could step in and replace that expensive gym and time.

Hi Mike, I would like to see an update video on the x3 Force bar before I buy it.
@lionki3
@lionki3 10 ай бұрын
Similar experience here with the lockdown but I didn't workout and didn't have the space or desire to build a gym at home. Recently wanted to build mass again and find the X3 but was skeptical about it so I lurked in the fb users group for a few months while using a Total Gym GTS to hold me over. I was sold on the X3 and have been using it for a month and have not looked back. I'm building my strength back again and then some. It's so efficient and gives me a pump so fast and it saves me so much time. It's so convenient and it gives me such an intense workout unlike anything else. Among the benefits is not overloading the joints like free weights with variable resistance. I don't feel the stress it has when going heavy like weights. I've read so many who used to be gym rats like myself switch to the X3 and love that it doesn't hurt their joints as they get older.
@justinw1765
@justinw1765 10 ай бұрын
X3 seems nice and like a good idea, but seems quite pricey for what is essentially just resistance bands. But, I'm kind of handy and inventive, so I may use their model to build my own version for significantly less. And you'd be surprised what you can build that is very strong just with composites of wood/plywood (or bamboo with expanding foam in it for tubes), fiberglass (especially S-glass), and either high quality composite/lamination epoxy or the budget friendly--Titebond III waterproof rated wood glue.

@@justinw1765 I've seen people build their own platform and bar but buy their bands, they are not like most generic bands which are for physical therapy. These have real "weight" to them and have a unique force curve. I bought mine open box direct from them for $350 with full warranty.

I quit lifting weights coz my joints suffered to much in my twenties. I know have 3 old XLI's (2 for parts, theyre getting rare) and both a wall mounted pull-up bar and a wall mounted dip combi station. This really works great and it all fits in my 20 square foot 'spare' room, now dubbed 'home gym' haha. I still do deathlifts with a bar though, but not to heavy. I just really, really like deathlifts haha.

Love it. I've been on bands for 6 months and love the results. Like nothing before. Quick, convenient easy or heavy as needed. The force curve is what does it for me. Free weights are predictable and are just like day to day gravity movements. I think you get used to it. Changing it up has been very helpful. I'm sore for longer and maybe that's good or bad. But way quicker than free weights. I don't go to a gym so machines are out. I do need some heavier bands and different shaped ones. I like that one guy who does the gloves on the bands style or work. Gets your hands in it more than bars for certain things that could be good. But could over work the wrists.

I've tried using bands attached to a bar like the x3, but their is hardly any tension at the bottom of exercises like deadlifts, rows and chest press. I've found those to be absolutely worthless on an x3 type bar
@hybridresistance
@hybridresistance 10 ай бұрын
You can always get other band tensions (32, 37), but I hear you that was my concern / issue with bands as well. Just felt that some parts of the ROM were lacking. I basically started to test the band advocates theories that it's ultimately better to stress the muscles where it's stronger for muscle growth / less joint stress. I'm not saying I've fully adopted this as truth, but the muscle pump / stress dialing in this groove is enough to make me what to keep doing it every workout.

I love the Bullworker, Isokinator and Bands. There really isn’t any need for free weights unless you plan on being a power lifter and if your wanting to be a body. Builder then you need to be looking at steroids and or TRT because you won’t get anywhere near the look of a pro body builder without the juice.

I'm loving those things too. Isokinator is a guilty pleasure for sure. I'd talk about that more, but I know many people won't consider it because of the price. I think the bodybuilder physique is really in the eye of the beholder. I know a lot of older natural guys who look awesome, secret is just a lifetime of being consistent. The opposite is also true. I was at a strength conference where all they talked about was "everyone should be on trt" and if you saw these guys they all just looked like normal dudes. I've interviewed an a bunch of natural veterans bodybuilders on the channel if you're interested. I'm kind of in the minority though of people who are against trt though. Looking at getting my friend Jason on again from "natural gallant bodybuilding as well.

do u use electrolites? magnesium and potassium are import for normal heart function. also calcium but we tend to get enough of it in our daily diet mostly unless you don;t eat much cheese or dairy products and vegetables. Calcium is the contracting factor for muscles and magnesium the relaxer and so is potassium. Many people are magnesium deficient due to depleted soil and stress. things like stress/alcohol/poort diet deplete magnesium signs of deficiency in magnesium can be muscle spasms/frequent headaches/fatigue/anxiety/depression and lots of other things. the magnesium miracle by docter carlyn dean is a wonderfull book about magnesium. you can also find her on youtube

I agree with a lot of the points you made. Lockdown was the gamechanger. I guess nothing negative has zero positives. Case in point I've got a hernia and can't afford the op so waiting for my nhs(UK) number to come up. So I've had to train around it. I've realised I'm my 60's I need to revisit my goals. I've been exclusive on bands for 3 years. The convenience is probably the biggest positive. You can start straight away on you're given bodypart for that day. 1am in the morning no sweat! Home gym open 24/7. Immediate access to whatever you want to train. Only caveat is the shared passion of others one gets at the gym. Non muscle building folk just can't relate to the passion and excitement. But home training builds that mind focus. It's taken nearly 3 years but I'm really in a good grove now mentally in the last 4 months. A recent change is to drop my weight down by 7kg(0.5kg a month) . This lower weight I found is much easier to maintain and get progressively a lot leaner. I don't need to strain with the bands. Just stimulate enough. The possible downside of your pals at the gym is you hold a size that represents you. But moving away from that circle of gym buddies I can become a smaller but leaner version of myself. This is a perfect size for my height and looks a lot healthier than a bulked up version that never gets around to becoming lean because the effort required is almost impossible.

After a few years, the great majority of one's natural strength & muscle potential has been built, (unless one adds massive calories). At that point, bands & body-weight work might maintain. There's no equivalent to weights for adding small increments of resistance, a crucial aspect of the double-progressive protocol, which has enhanced millions of physiques. I truly doubt that you'd have the physique you have now if you'd by-passed weights fomr the very beginning.
@hybridresistance
@hybridresistance 6 ай бұрын
I don't really have a problem with your statement, but outside of when my goals were powerlifting, I never worried too much about exact progressive numbers. Only going workout to workout stimulating the muscle as much as could using whatever means (varied reps, sets, tempos, weight, modes, etc). I have incorporated more weights to my training since this video picking up new toys, but still don't really deviate from how I've approached my resistance training since I was younger. Whatever the workout, I'm ideally simply choosing the mode that will stress my muscles the most in that workout.
