@billyt.17542 жыл бұрын
@@Aj-sn1dp Yes it's true, for certain degrees I would say it's not easy, especially law. But I specifically mentioned computer science. It's definitely a good option if you want to study in the STEM field, having a good education in a prestigeous university while paying almost nothing. And changing degrees is not a problem at all! We also have the Bachelor and Master degree system and universities in europe can transfer your grades to another system if preferred. That's the smallest issue. But as I said: it makes most sense to see it as another option if you want to study in a STEM field. You are probably saving more money when moving to europe rather than studying in an Ivy League university. If you consider the cost of living and tuition fees in Munich, it'll cost you a fraction of what you would have paid for the tuition fees alone in well known American universities.

@@alqoshgirl I didn't say you can earn more in europe than in the US. I specifically pointed out that you can study in europe and go back to the US to save money. Just as my friend did. I didn't say anything about staying in europe afterwards. If your focus is to make big money than considering to study in europe and working in big tech in the USA afterwards is a great option! And don't forget that as an American you gain more foreign knowledge and experience which is highly valuable in business. You won't get that if you study in the US only. That's how my friend sees it and that's also a reason why he got a job at Google in his home state California, after graduating in Computer Science in Munich!

I watched your video on how far your salary goes in NYC after paying rent and your student loans and realized if you had no regrets then why were you whining that you essentially had only 3K a month to spend on everything else? That you were essentially one of the hundreds of thousands of professional working poor living in NYC. To anyone listening, your student loan payment & the rent each were the cost of a mortgage payment in any midsized city in America so you were paying that to a landlord and a bank for the next 30yrs with nothing to show for it. 1. Because you can't afford to own anything if you're paying rent. 2. The sad truth about professional advancement in NYC is, as one of thousands of available junior law associates working in NYC your chances of breaking out and moving up in any law firm in town and making more money is pretty slim. Competition is pretty fierce for getting noticed and standing out unless that Harvard law degree came with a pedigree of which, if you had to borrow money to get, says that like the majority of your competition, you do not have. An Old Money pedigree with an Ivy League education are the only things that work in NYC. So just getting by for the next 30yrs means you've traded the less stressful experiance of three yrs at Harvard for the rest of your personal life after Harvard. No family; no home; no life beyond paycheck to paycheck. Or, you can pick another city to live in and grow professionally. Seattle, Portland, Dallas, Kansas City, the Bay Area even L.A. can give you a better chance than NYC because unlike the East Coast, the West Coast believes in entrepreneurs.

I think people also forget graduate school loans begin accumulating interest the minute you took them, unlike undergrad, interest are deferred until six month after you graduate. That 250k with interest is gonna be like half a mill by the time she pays them off. There are way better investment options for those money. Eventually our goal is to reach financial freedom and not being in perpetual debt.

It's about hedging your bet. With my parents current finacial status (middle class) I would not take on loans for a career with a low chance of return on investment. Think theater, art, English, philosophy. Those are all degrees that can be worthwhile but they definitely are not as likely to be as profitable as what I am currently doing, computer science. Because I decided to invest in a career that is more likely to have a large salary I felt comfortable going to a small private school and taking on some government loans to do so. I am in a privileged position that I have my parents helping me pay for college and I could've avoided student loans by going to a large public college but small class sizes were important to me and it's a finacial investment but for me the risk was mitigated by the financial outcomes of career

This isn’t a good message to be putting out there. Some 18 year old will see this and think it’s justification to go to a private school and rack up $200k+ in loans for a bachelors in social work or education, neither of which will pay nearly enough to pay off that amount alone, and when you throw in an additional $100k+ for grad school, they are going to be drowning in debt for the rest of their life.

Wait until 20 years down the line, see if that student debt was worth the three years at harvard. Harvard is no longer the ivy league it once was, extremely overrated. You wanted to do so many things they were against, and this was your only way getting to choose for yourself.
