I'm aromantic, and I really appreciated your discussion. Romantic relationships don't have to be everything in life, and it's nice to see someone pointing that out. As an aro/ace who never wants to date anyone ever, it's pretty interesting to see someone older than me who has never had a romantic partner and is relatively okay with it. You don't see that attitude from many allo people. I often feel as if being single is always seen as a bad thing. If you are single, you have to be unhappy with that status. But I think people forget that there are people who are okay with and/or want to be single!

Yes Ash! The healthiest outlook - if the right person comes along, you’re open to it. There’s such a damaging cultural perception that it’s not normal to actively be out dating or be in relationships. The most important relationship is with yourself. A person has to be able to be alone to have healthy relationships. There’s way too much codependency these days.

I imagine there is some reluctance for Ash to pursue anything with Joanna because what may it do to the friendship circle if it didn’t work out but a slow burn would give them a chance to explore the possibility and if it doesn’t feel right agree to remain friends before either get hurt. Im 49 and ive not had that many boyfriends. Got divorced about 15 years ago. Never bothered finding one. There is a lot to be said about being happy in your own head. And not being lonely while alone is a big thing. A lot of people in lockdown found themselves questioning their choices. Ive loved it.

I think it's awesome that you haven't felt the need to put yourself out there really intensively before... and so you haven't. Ideally, people should only be in relationships if they want it. Not because it's 'normal'. So many people are single and happy that way, and all of these videos show that you have an active social life and you already give and receive lots of love. I feel the same as you said Ash, about the gap that I need to fill by having a woman. I'm focusing on me, my friendships, and thats fine for me. Dealing with all the shit talk of some people that think they need to "help with that" sucks. I hate it. Even my parents, from time to time, send my phone number to some single girl that they know, and for what? I mean, I'm a grown man, i know what to do.. "forcing" (maybe this word is too strong for my case) these relationships will never work out (that's what I believe for my case) Like I said, I'm more focused on my friendships, and it works for me and I really love that. As someone who is 25 and never had a boyfriend, I think it’s because we’re waiting for that one exceptional person that’s actually worth our time. Anyone or anything other than special just seems pointless. I have seen all my friends get in these relationships with the first person that shows an interest and then it seems like they convince themselves they like this person. Those relationships last maybe a year max and then afterwards they realise they could’ve just been single and grown on their own. I think people get in relationships for the sake of it and to fill a void or that “loneliness” when in all reality it’s not in their best interest.

It's ok Ash I can understand and know that it is awkward for family to understand a person can simply be content. Not that I am not open to having a significant other but like you I think I have always just been focused on living life, bettering myself and enjoying time with friends. Every Friday we used to go to Oxford ice rink and boogie to the old tunes with the public, then some of us ice hockey ers have a fast ride around some of the public would join us for a laugh 😂 and a laugh it was . Social pressure to be coupled up in the heteronormative situation in the euro/western world originated from Christian doctrines for the control of property (and women's bodies, but that's a whole other thing). Luckily we're at a point in time where if you choose not to be partnered in that way it's fine! More than fine in fact - it's more healthy to choose to be single rather than be coupled out of co-dependency, fear of being alone, need for attention etc (*ahem Nile cough*). cases like this really anger and piss me off, i sometimes like to feel that women are the only gender that are owed or entitled to dates or a relationship, since women don't have to do the pursuing or hitting on, initiating interactions, etc. Thats why far more men than women end up going deep or late into adulthood without ever having dated anyone before
