Excellent video, My name is Dr. Linda Thornton. I am a 1975 alumni of NYU College of Dentistry. I am the first black female army trained board-certified Prosthodontist. Out of 180 students in my class, there were only three African Americans and one black female, ME. After graduating from NYU, I entered the Army, became board-certified in Prosthodontics and rose to the rank of LtCol. and received my Masters' degree in Healthcare Administration at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. After retiring from the army, I became a Associate Professor at Temple University (Kornberg School of Dentistry). After retiring from Temple, I moved to Florida. Now I am teaching Prosthodontics at Lake Erie School of Dental Medicine. AND IT ALL STARTED AT NYU COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY. Congratulations on your acceptance to NYU. And Keep going.......... Good Luck in your future endeavors.

@@DoctorKrysten I'm scared because I'm from the Bay Area and my dream school is the University of the Pacific's Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry because I fell in love with the facility and atmosphere. I already know that the chances are very slim because their acceptance rate hovers around 3-4%. Is it worth sacrificing the rest of my short-lived childhood to get into a good undergraduate and dental school? Also, can you make a video about your Rice acceptance(and pros and cons of the university)? You are such an amazing role model for me :)

I love this and want to share my experience as well in hopes it can help as well. I actually finished dental school and was applying for my postgrad education for orthodontics...and I unfortunately didn’t have the most competitive GPA, but I did shadow orthodontists and commit a lot of my time in that field! Personal statement is VERY important and is what can help the university give you a chance especially if you ask a bunch of different orthodontists and educators to review it and give you their thoughts. So basically make sure your CV/resume has a lot of focus on the speciality of your choice and a VERY good personal statement. Make sure you don’t give too much personal details because they aren’t looking for your life story, so make your intro very brief and straight to the point so you can talk more about why you are a good candidate and how the uni is going to benefit from having you (also try not being overly confident because it’s all about balance). I did get accepted to the program I applied for and I should be starting this fall as per the region I live in. Good luck to everyone who is working on their applications :D

Despite having no idea what was going on in gen chem and i was TERRIFIED of the DAT, I ended up getting a 24 on the Gen Chem section but an 18 on the Ochem section haha. So you're struggling now, but if you really want it, you will get it if you put in the work!! :) Good luck!!

From everything that I've heard throughout the applications process, either your GPA or DAT score needs to be solid. The recruiters have to base decisions off of some sort of metric. However, there are exceptions, so don't give up if you are lacking in an area. I had an 18 on the DAT with a 3.7 GPA, and decided to use that DAT score for 2 application cycles, and it worked. I would not retake the DAT unless both your GPA and DAT score are bad, or if you scored under an 18 on the DAT. A lot of my undergrad classmates did not do a lot of volunteering, shadowing, or research. I would highly recommend doing some sort of undergrad research through your biology or chemistry department. I was able to get a great letter of recommendation from the faculty that I did research with and I was asked about my research at the interview, which was easy to talk about. Also, between my 1st and 2nd application cycle, I shadowed an oral surgeon and he also wrote me an awesome letter of recommendation. After I did not get into a school the first cycle, then I did undergrad research, I kept tutoring boys, and shadowed the oral surgeon. This made me look like I was actively trying to make my application better, and I became a better applicant after this extra year. A lot, and I mean a lot of people get in on their 2nd and 3rd tries. I'd give it at least 3 tries, I know it is expensive, but it's worth it.

Is being in the honors college really worth it for dental school or can you still get into dental school without honors? I’m also in Texas and I would love to go to A&M college of dentistry or move back to Michigan with my family and go to dental school there!!!

I'm applying to UTHSCH for the Dental Hygiene program, my current GPA is a 3.2 i still have 6 more classes to go so I hope to get my grades up. I shadowed at a dental office BEFORE when I was going to apply to HCC Coleman but I obviously changed my mind. Did you have to take the HSRT? I have never taken the DAT because they didn't tell me I required it.

Thank you for making this video. This is very helpful for us undergrad students that's really looking forward to dental school. Would you say it's more about what you know or who you know?
@DoctorKrysten
@DoctorKrysten 4 жыл бұрын
I'd definitely say it's more about what you know (GPA, DAT, dentistry in general) than who. I knew a lot of faculty and students at one dental school and didn't even get an interview. Focus on you and building up your application. You will be recognized for it.
@jenGeeJushawshee

@@DoctorKrysten disagree with dentistry in general, they don’t appreciate a strong knowledge of dentistry prior to dental school at your interview...you are not even accepted yet.

Hey Krisyten! Thanks for posting this video! Its really helpful. But I was wondering how come even meharry or howard didn't offer you an interview the first time you applied? Did you apply late when you applied the first time? Also, when you retook the DAT did you retake it before you applied the first time?

how did you ask for letters of recommendation ? i am at that barrier because my science classes are mixed between C's and B's
@DoctorKrysten
@DoctorKrysten 3 жыл бұрын
I know that's rough. But if that B is a high B, I'd try to start a relationship with that professor so that they could write you one. But going forward,, you wanna try to get to know your science profs very well BEFORE the class ends so that even if you don't make a perfect score, they know you personally and are more willing to write good things about you

What's wrong with volunteering just for your application? You're doing something that you probably wouldn't have otherwise.
@DoctorKrysten
@DoctorKrysten 4 жыл бұрын
That's true, but these schools are trying to get to know about your ability to empathize and give back to your community through your application. It should be an accurate as possible representation of you and your passions. Also, volunteers, especially those who are working with vulnerable populations, should care and be sensitive to the people they're working with...not just be there to get volunteer hours. However, I agree that it's good to branch out and try new volunteer opportunities...as long as your heart is in the right place. Thanks for your comment!
