The Real News should try to have both John Kiriakou and Scott Bennett together for a series of interviews like these, for a mind blowing show of facts on corruption running through the government. John should get together and share notes, I bet John would be mind blown with what Scott Benet found, and could help him to further his investigations at a higher level.

Regarding Mr. Kirakou's interview on ABC news , where he says he changed his attitude towards the use of waterboarding as a method of interrogation , " because we are Americans and we are better than that ". I submit the following quote attributed to president Richard Nixon , " There are those who will hate you , but those who hate you do not win until you hate them , for it is then that you have decided to destroy yourself ". If only Dick Cheney had reflected upon this , perhaps the American people and the U.S. would not have lost the respect of the court of public opinion throughout the world. Perhaps . . . simply my thoughts and something to ponder.

"Thiopental (Pentothal) is still used in some places as a truth serum to weaken the resolve of a subject and make them more compliant to pressure." I assume research has significantly increased the efficacy of the classified drug currently being used for this purpose. Water boarding/torture is a primitive and useless way to extract information.

Richard Clarke says in his book that AS SOON AS Bush jr became elected, he had Clarke look at Iraq (I forget exactly what for, probably WMD), so there was clearly a desire to target Iraq the day they walked into the White House. I think there is even a clip of Bush jr at some event where someone said they believed he went into Iraq because they tried to kill his father, and Bush said, Absolutely!'.

Daddy bush is the one who put saddam into power, He used taxpayer money ie foreign aid to gain private intrests in Iraq oil and a foothold next to Iran. When saddam cut Bush off of his cut of profits from Iraq oil he saddam immediately became the enemy. So the national security state, The banker's cartel, and the council on foreign relations decided to destroy Iraq and then built the largest embassy in the world. Along with more stinkin United States military bases so they could use taxpayer money as always and lives to defend their stinkin crooked private intrests. While they sit at home and eat pheasant and drink thousand dollar bottles of wine and figure out who the next country is that they are going to rip off at the taxpayer exspence and lives!

Watching this now and remembering the torture findings. I think he was a target for speaking the truth in which , under the Bush administration this opened up more than just on a debate level but a strong human rights issue. Being that he had worked in Human Rights division in the past. Of course he would feel the way he did. But unlike some other people not mentioning names. This gentleman was a target. He was possibly setup and used. Especially after resigning from the Central Intelligence Agency. He has those papers to sign before he received any confidential info. It's like writing your name in blood. .

No Way I couldn't disagree more. Ideological factionalism is a fact of government; be it a democracy, monarchy or global corporate oligarchy. Always has been. Understanding this is key to understanding the world and making informed decisions. We will never move forward as a species without shedding ourselves of divisive ideologies, be they nationalist, racist, sectarian etc.. These serve only to reduce our understanding of the fact that individuals and the decisions they make shape our world; INDIVIDUALS, not races or nations or creeds. Those things are too large, vague and unwieldy to act with any internal consistency. Only when we examine the cells of the body, the ATOMS of that cell, the fundamental particles of that atom, do we come to understand the whole, the body, the world.

There was testimony before Congress on waterboarding in 2005, The issue was whether it was torture or an interrogation technique. John K. leaked information that led to names of CIA operatives ending up in Gitmo prison defense files. `Waterboarding' spurs debate on what is torture John Crewdson, Tribune senior correspondent CHICAGO TRIBUNE In an appearance in March before the Senate Armed Services Committee, U.S. Sen. John McCain asked CIA Director Porter Goss about a purported agency interrogation technique intended to "have the prisoner feel that they were drowning." "You're getting into, again, an area of what I will call professional interrogation techniques," Goss replied. "That's the area that I'm concerned about," retorted McCain, an Arizona Republican, whose amendment to a military appropriations bill forbidding the "cruel, inhuman or degrading" treatment of detainees in U.S. custody passed the Senate in October by 90-9. `We don't do torture' The CIA won't discuss the technique McCain mentioned, known as "waterboarding," which it says is classified. But as Goss also told the committee, "We don't do torture." "There is no doubt that waterboarding is torture, despite the administration's reluctance to say so," argues Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch. Atty. Gen. Alberto Gonzales recently told CNN that "Congress has defined what torture is, and it is intentional infliction of severe--I emphasize the word `severe'--intentional infliction of severe physical or mental pain or suffering." Asked whether "waterboarding" would be allowed under that definition, Gonzales replied that "that would be something that would have to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis." Whether or not it constitutes torture, intelligence officials and others who have seen waterboarding -- or experienced it--say nothing in the interrogator's arsenal is simpler, quicker or more effective. The difference, they say, is that waterboarding doesn't induce pain that can be withstood. It induces terror and a reaction of the autonomic nervous system that cannot be controlled. Several conflicting descriptions of how waterboarding is done have been published in recent weeks. According to a Navy SEAL who says he underwent waterboarding during training, the process works like this: The subject is strapped to a board and tilted so his head is lower than his feet. A cloth is tied over his nose and mouth and saturated with water, eventually making it impossible for him to breathe. When used in the field, the technique is less elaborate but no less effective. No board, for example, is involved; the suspect is simply held down. "You just pull the guy's T-shirt over his face and dump a canteen of water on his head," said the SEAL, who spoke on condition that he not be identified and who emphasized that he had never used the technique during a real interrogation. Waterboarding has been described as "the illusion of drowning." In fact, there is no illusion; if interrogators didn't stop, the subject would drown. "Inhaling even a small amount of water causes the body to close the glottis and violently cough to remove the offending substance," said the SEAL, who is also trained as a Navy hospital corpsman. "This entire process initiates the fight-or-flight response in the sympathetic nervous system, causing the person to involuntarily raise their heart rate, respiratory rate, and flail and writhe in an effort to break free from the situation. "This reaction is even more pronounced when the subject is lying on his back with feet elevated and head down. This is due to the fact that the nostrils serve as a catch basin for small, but significant nonetheless, amounts of water." Because the water prevents air from entering the nose and mouth, and therefore the lungs, the supply of oxygen available for metabolic functions is exhausted within seconds. "After performing this on a target for 30 seconds and then stopping the flow of water, the sense of relief and then the realization that this is but a brief respite are extremely powerful motivators for the subject to cooperate in the interrogation," the SEAL said. Practice seen in training Waterboarding experienced in training, he added, "is instantly effective on 100 percent of Navy SEALs, a group which is probably more comfortable in adverse maritime swimming conditions than any other on the planet." "In my case, I wasn't even held down. My teammate simply poured a canteen of water over my face while I had my T-shirt pulled over my head. Instantly, my ability to breathe through the T-shirt was taken away and my natural reaction to inhale deeply through my mouth and nose for air caused me to take on small amounts of water." Waterboarding is also effective, the SEAL said, because the subject realizes that "there are no enduring physiological consequences, which he intuitively knows. This is important psychologically, because he can legitimately hope that he will be able to live on normally after the experience, if only he cooperates. "Breaking kneecaps and pulling out fingernails does not hold this promise. The fact that the target has a chance to remain fully whole makes him more likely to be truthful and to break more quickly." www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2005-12-28-0512280226-story.html

According to him, his friends were subjected to Israeli harassment within a short time after their arrival. What he does not say is, what were his 2 innocent, non-concerning friends were doing in Israel and if they were harassed, why they didn't report it to the authorities as criminal activity. He tells an Israeli abuse story with virtually no details and no Israeli side of the story (if it is not fabricated.) I don't believe him. Why would anyone?

Torture has always gone on in war. But you DON'T make it OFFICIAL POLICY and become the very enemy you are trying to fight. Also, torture on average does not provide reliable intelligence, and literally brings you down to the level of the enemy if you sanction those actions. You sound like someone who perhaps only recently started getting news online.

@tonodono6945
@tonodono6945 7 жыл бұрын
No, that would be a strawman. I say keep the practice banned as ever it was since at least the end of WW2, and do not sink to the level of your enemy and give up the moral high ground by refusing to prosecute those who DO torture. Now, on a case by case basis, let's say that you have an enemy detained, and there are stockpiles of dirty bombs all across the U.S., and they will go off in 10 minutes without the kill code. Let's say you, as an individual, decide to take the law into your hands and use torture on this person to get the codes, after exhausting the most effective means of extracting intelligence. Let's say you use torture and SUCCESSFULLY disarm the bombs because of ACTIONABLE intelligence you acquired through said torture. Give that person a jury trial, make sure the jury knows all of their right, including jury nullification, and I would guess that person would be acquitted, as he saved the country. Now let's say all that happened, but (and this is far more likely), after using torture, you get NO ACTIONABLE INTELLIGENCE because the guy just tells you anything to get the pain to stop. This is what is far more likely to happen, because physical torture DOES NOT PROVIDE *ACTIONABLE* intelligence. And of course, assuming there's a country left, you give that person a trial as well.
