Your description of the game’s key mechanics is both succinct and insightful and makes me want to immediately take this new game in my collection off the shelf it regrettably has been sitting on for several months. One unrelated question: I was really intrigued by the picture of the board game you briefly displayed at the beginning of your video (roughly the 1:35 mark) - the one with a pastoral setting that includes a winding river. Could you tell us the name of the game?

It’s some version of Caylus although not the original version which I have... absolute classic, a ruthless, riotous game 😀

One thing we’ve done is to print multiple copies of each numbered board so that all players have the same board in a game. You’ll soon find that some boards are much stronger than others otherwise.

I play this mostly on BGA so computer can calculate the points. I was like you and did not get the love for this game. Then I played and it was mind blowing. My finest BGA experience was winning my first CoB game by one point!

Being in the hobby now for two years my taste in games have certainly evolved. However I’m really selective in buying games, as you know board games in Oz aren’t as cheap as other countries. Soo I always do research and watch gameplay (rather than reviews) then it helps me make my purchase decision. However, I don’t tend to look at particular themes (eg don’t like cats, horror, and space) But then I have in my collection Isle of Cats, Eldritch Horror and Ares Expedition (-this one is the most recent acquisition) and I love ❤️ love these games. It really makes a game more special to me when a game surprises me that much. To have such enjoyment despite of the theme. Mechanics and or originality really sings to me more than anything else now. So I’ve learnt that never judge a book by its cover. But I’m still not into area control games and too spacey themes (Ares Expedition really was an exception)

Definitely Terraforming Mars. I was put off by the look and the components until I received it as a Christmas gift a couple of years ago and did it really open my eyes to the satisfaction of building an engine.

@@bryanscollick8305 Yes I agree. The design is a bit pre 80s graphic design style. It reminds me of my brothers old “Super Trump” cards back when I was still a child. (Don’t know if you heard of it, could be before your time) but i have definitely started watching playthroughs for the OG game. It looks like an epic game. But I think I’m happy with Ares Expedition for now. (Unless they do a redesign 😅) Ark Nova fills the void with the big engine game for me.

I am waiting to see the upgraded elements on the upcoming campaign (and price point) before deciding to go that route or the anniversary edition. My suspicion is that anniversary edition will be more suited. I quite like the design. The new campaign ideas I have seen look a little too polished, but time will tell.

@@ekillops22 Yep it is Caylus 1303. Yes a new version. Its illustrated by Andrew Bosley and has some new character tiles and game differences especially when it comes to building the castle at the end of the road.

This game looks boring AF no matter how you try to spin it. The fact is this game is fancy solitaire. If i want to play fancy solitaire ill just play an awesome computer game. I play board games to interact with my friends. Not just do an activity in silence next to them.
