Amazing ..,I could resonate each word you said. I too want to switch from a software developer to a consultant or business analyst because of the exact reasons you just mentioned here. Could you please tell whether your developer experience got considered while applying as consultant or were you considered an absolute fewer as a consultant? Thanks ☺️

Exactly the same feelings I am having, I am a good developer and earning a good amount of money, but recently I realized this is not what I wanted to do for my entire life. I don't want to solve tech problems that are not going to help in my personal life rather than earning me money. Going a level high I want to solve real-life problems, and business problems this will definitely help me to improve my soft skills and will help me in building the business in the near future.

Thank you for your sharing! I'm wondering what is the difference between consulting vs PM. what I understand is that with consulting, you are working on client's project. while as a PM, you are developing your company's own product. and also, coming from an engineering background, would it be easier (more practical) to switch to tech consulting vs management consulting? what are the differences?
@ArnoldLamYT
@ArnoldLamYT 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ray! Huge difference between consulting and PM. Consulting you are jumping from company to company solving their problems. Examples include organization restructuring, digital strategy, or Workday implementation. PMs are really the CEOs of a product. They make a lot of the decisions about the features, and seek out investment in their development. From an engineering background, it's probably easier to switch into tech consulting. The difference is that tech consulting has to do with defining/implementing a technology solution, whereas management consulting is more of a general management solution. Hope this helps!

Hey Finance Explained! Love the video and have a question. I was wondering if there was a great disparity within software engineering and consulting compensation within Canada specifically? You hint at this in your video but the examples you use are US. As software engineering salaries are lower than US in Canada, I was expecting there to be less of a disparity between consulting and SE.
@ArnoldLamYT
@ArnoldLamYT 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, there is a huge disparity. At the "big 4" firms in Canada, they usually pay 60-70K for new grad consultants, whereas big tech firms will pay software engineers 90-100K+. That being said, the majority of tech firms pay around 75-85K for software engineers. Even then, there is a disparity. This might be a video idea! :)

hi am computer engineering grad too and I got a job at bosch as software engineer and just like you I am thinking of gng into consulting for the exact same reasons, solving, strategy based stuff, and the excellent exit options. But I am thinking of doing a masters in management degree in order to get the job. What'd u say? Shall I learn the stuff without a degree and approach the job or go with masters??

@ArnoldLamYT 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Miheer, I would suggest looking at technology consulting firms such as Accenture or IBM and see if their Salesforce practice is hiring. Your experience seems like it might be a match for that type of consulting. From there, you can see if you like it or if you’d like to internally switch to another form of consulting. Hope this helps!

Hi Rishabh, I switched into consulting after my bachelor in CS, I didn’t do an MBA. That being said, I did technology strategy consulting, which is very applicable from a CS background I would say both of those options are great! It depends on what you like to do.

hey, i have a doubt just let me know if it relates or if i am wrong? We have sales and marketing in IT company, now selling on IT firms is not just u sell some product simply, u actually try to sell a service or product which will help to solve there problem, so in many companies they call the sales person as a tech consultant...now i wanted to know is this is correct??
@sahilsingh4330
@sahilsingh4330 2 жыл бұрын
No this is not correct, I personally myself work at PWC US in tech consulting domain and here I m working as product innovation . So basically here we works on many projects related to strategy, data analytics, java microservices etc. I think u have been misleaded by other guys. It's kinda more techno functional domain. Amalgamation of both CSE and business.

I have a question ... What makes one go towards consulting from SWE roles even after the less compensation and poor work life balance in consulting?
@Sapphireleadershipadvisors
@Sapphireleadershipadvisors Күн бұрын
The answer to that question is evident when you look at how devs are treated in the industry currently. More and more is being pushed on them for less and less money and honestly in many cases work life balance is not any better for engineers. But as a consultant You have more flexibility as you are a business owner and don’t report to someone who most likely doesn’t know as much as you do and acts like they do. You have clients. And if you don’t like a particular client you don’t have to work with them…you can find other clients.
