Why I Will NEVER Buy The GoPro Hero 12 or the Insta360 One RS

With GoPro My wife and I each have identical ones. Mine works fine but hers isn't reliable. The freezing and stopping is a big issue.

Quite useful video Ben. And the timing is perfect. When that dreadful summer weather will be over, I'll start hiking on a regular basis and in different locations around Québec city. So I started looking for one of those action cameras. I know nothing about video cameras but since it's so popular, I was considering the GoPro. But I'll take your advice and stay away from that one and instead, I'll look for the DJI Osmo you mentioned . Thanks!

There are tons of forums solely devoted to how unreliable GoPros are. Do yourself a favor and get the Osmo Action 4. If this video even helps one person, then it's a success! Cheers!

I hear you on the inconsistency of GoPro. I have several and sometimes they can really be unreliable - especially during critical action moments that you only get 1 shot at and look forward to reviewing later. I typically use mine in hot direct sun so it tends to overheat quickly and often. While I havent completely given up on GoPro simply because they are the most durable in rugged and high impact situations, I have found a liking to the Insta X3 and the 1-inch. Insta 360 cameras can also overheat, but just not as often as GoPro - so to be on the safer side, I typically mount 2 cameras (when kayaking and mountain biking). The significant downside to 360 cameras is the very fragile lens that scratches easy. Also, while GoPro has it's constant issues, I have to admit that the customer service was helpful with replacing a brand new GoPro 10. While I was snorkeling, my camera shut down due to water damage. Sand most likely got trapped in the battery door and I didnt realize it until after my snorkel session. I called customer service and they replaced it. It's always worth giving them a call and asking for a replacement. It seems that customer service may be their lifeline because although the camera can deliver beautiful video, it doesnt matter if the camera doesnt work well consistently.

Thanks for the video. I wonder what settings and memory card you were using? The original GoPro Hero 1 and 2 was the most reliable camera they produced. A few yrs later I bought a Hero 3 black and it was terrible, so I kept using my original Hero 1 while the 3 stayed in a drawer. I now have a GoPro 5 black which did not work right for 2 years, until I discovered the problem was my Sandisk Ultra SD card was a knockoff, not genuine (which the Ultra itself has reliability issues, so this was a knockoff of an unreliable card). It's getting harder and harder to tell; even the packaging looks authentic and I had to contact Sandisk to find out. So for 2 years I was mad at GoPro when the problem was with the memory card. I've been considering the 12 because of some of the features, but thanks to this video I'm going to research the freezing issue. As for the settings, I wonder if the 10 (and 11, 12) would be less likely to freeze on lower resolution and/or slower frame rate.

Believe me, I went through every KZbin video, watching for the optimal settings and bought the best memory cards. I also made sure I bought new batteries before the trip. 10 and 11 still have the freezing issues and 12 has less but still happens

I use a GoPro Hero 9 Black and maybe I've been lucky but I've only ever experienced a couple of glitches when I've had to pull out the battery for full reboot. I wouldn't trust the waterproofness. I use the quick capture mode so my clips are usually a few minutes and only very rarely over 8 mins. But from what I'm learning I wouldn't rush into buying newer versions of the GoPro, waiting to see feedback on the 12 and if it can offer any advantages over the 9. For me it works great for action videoing, the stabilisation is good and I usually film at 4k linear+ horizontal levelling. For travel, slower movement etc I'd get a proper camera.

In my opinion, you most likely don't need to upgrade. You already have most of the same features. If you're happy with the quality you're getting I would stay until there is a game-changing upgrade to GoPro.

Sorry to hear about your lost footage. I had a Gopro 7. It worked when it worked but it needed the battery pullout every now and then and I also lost a lot of vacation footage. The waterproofing worked for years, then one swim in a cenote, water went in and now the screen is dead but it still takes videos. I recently got the DJI Action 4. It still overheats if you record for 10-15 minutes in tropical weather but no random footage loss or battery pullout resets. Quite happy with it. The quick release and front touch screen and the more natural colors is nice, but the best feature of all is... no more pulling out the battery! No more Gopros for me too! One thing the Action 3 has over the Action 4 is I heard it can record way longer before overheating, so if you're happy with the footage, you've already got the perfect action camera. 🙂

Awesome! So you know my pain! I just don't want to worry anymore and just focus on pointing the camera at the right place. Though I have fomo on the Action 4, I'm happy with the Action 3, so thank you for the validation!

the action 4 will record without issue in 2.7k but all most cameras will struggle when in full resolution and working ro their max

never had a problem with mine. GoPro 10. heard of plenty of people that have had freezing GoPros but I haven't personally experienced it yet.

The RS is the newer version of the R. It's the identical form factor and also modular. For waterproofing, I just don't trust their modular cameras

GoPro is such trash. I have an 11 and I buy batteries like Tic Tacs. They last 15 mins, expand and get stuck in the camera, freeze. Yes, for going underwater you need to put it in a housing. It's been the same camera for about 8 years now. So sucks. But GoPro cloud storage is the best. I have about 10 TB for $50/year and counting. None of the footage is GoPro hosted there, my Sony A7IV 4K 10-bit HVEC.

Great utilization of cloud storage. I personally think that GoPro is not the best action camera anymore. Too many new ones that are more innovative.

I got GoPro 9 and 11, and oh boy, both are just a mess when you need it the most in traveling, im already at the verge of selling both since I got OA3 and OA4 already... and jeeze that GPH12, they need jesus...

5 meters = 16 feet; I submerged it in 10 feet = 3 meters; therefore it is not a misuse of product and following the recommended specs 5 metros = 16 pies; Lo sumergí en 10 pies = 3 metros; por lo tanto no es un mal uso del producto y siguiendo las especificaciones recomendadas
